Whenever I hear this concert, I imagine Bach himself, after having finished writing it, with an enormous sense of satisfaction of having created something sublime.
I am in Heaven with all the angels around me. Bach’s music is perfection. The two maestros playing such divine music together make me feel at peace in spite of this horrible Covid time. Thank you for showing us this precious film. I am grateful to you. Stay all safe. Better days will come back.
I have viewed this video dozens of times. Early on, I noticed that Yehudi Menuhin almost always used the whole bow - I mean point to frog. Every millimeter. Almost constantly. With speed and ease. I got the idea that I should try the same feat on my violin. And after a while, I noticed an improvement in tone, even with shorter bow strokes. It seems that just possessing the skill to finesse the bow with power and length has an effect that is heard in all types of playing. This amazes me.
Watching Jascha Heifetz bow in Ponce Estrillita is an art in itself. I know the body gets all the glory but the power of the bow is incredibly underrated. It was many years before I found out tilting the bow at the frog helped take weight off and created a more balanced toned compared to the other end.
Maybe he discovered it thruogh his Lessons with Moshe Feldenkrais and had the idea to look for hidden potential. Voila: the use the whole bow;). Best wishes.
So symbolic: Two Jewish violinists who grew up in ultimately opposing countries (the USA and the USSR), are playing a composition of the ultimate composer of classical music, and the result is perfection. Only music can!
Thaks, for yours comment. I'm russian and we never want any war... Bach is a one of some chance to make it impossible. Never. We mast listen, thinking and teaching our children.
That is not relevant at all, I was born in ex, communist Yugoslavia, never had a chance to listen to them in the concert, but personally very great full to Yehudi , he opened the door to the wonderful music world, I was sick , my parents bought me the discs with most violin concertos, Mendelssohn, Bach, Caykovski...... in their interpretations , all new ,wonderful world was there for me ....and still is ,just thanks......
Sorry for my inadequate English. People who dislike this version love the music itself. But we support those who try to restore this old music. The two solists in this version are maybe great, but they didn't knew too much how to preform the music in its original style. My English is too bad, I can't tell you all the differenses between modern and old style. Menuhin and Oistrakh playing on modern instruments, and the sound is different from string from the baroque periode.
yes, but also many of the other recordings are light and overly nuanced (especially people who recorded on baroque instruments). The brilliance of this one is that the soloists didn't fall victim to the light and fluffy perception of Bachs music that plagues the classical music world, they play it very boldly and with the utmost conviction which in my opinion is not necessarily how the music was originally played but was how back would've heard it in his own head. He didn't have the tools to make this bold of a sound on instruments where you literally had to pinch the hair on the bow with your fingers to tighten it. Of course feel free to disagree with me, different opinions after all are what keep us coming back to the same pieces over and over again!
It is not a matter of good versus bad music. I, too, love performances on original instruments and with original styling, but... One must also appreciate brilliant, if different, interpretations of the music. In their day, they played it with their (current) understandings of the music. That must be appreciated as well. Bach may have been surprised by this performance, but I am sure that he would have approved.
I heard David and Igor Oistrakh play this work at Newcastle City Hall, UK, in 1968. We'd just completed the slog of doing our A level exams. As soon we heard the exhilarating opening notes, my friend and I looked at each other and knew that there was something in this life that transcended swotting for exams.
"Swotting", a new word in my American lexicon of English, is a great descriptor. Across the pond from England, we might say "sweating" to describe an effort whether physical or mental.
This is, quite simply, as good as it gets. My final refuge from the intolerable ignorance, bigotry, and hatred in the world right now. This divine music restores what faith I have left in our miserable species....
Even though I have moved on to Punk Rock, Metal and Alt/Grunge rock Yehudi Menuhin remains a favorite. When I was a kid he was my favorite and inspired me to learn the violin (I was awful and where I lived didn't really have any teachers). But I can remember when I was a kid, my parents took me to his performance and during the intermission we went for a little walk and then suddenly Menuhin was standing in front of me and my parents pulled out my copy of "the cat and the fiddle" which he signed. It remains a highlight of my childhood memories....and a well played violin remains one of my favorite sounds.
This is of such unspeakable beauty, it brings tears to my eyes. Amazing composer, amazing musicians playing on amazing instruments. This truly is an incredible historical recording. (even my little baby in my belly is awake and moving around while listening to this)
Jessica De Meo Hi Jessica We have two daughters too ! They don’t stay little for very long so make the most of them !!! Ours are 27 & 25 years old, the youngest married during lockdown on 6th August ... God Bless
I can’t believe the depth and breadth of Bach’s music, it’s just unbelievable. I’ve been listening to choral works and organ works, and decided to listen to this old chestnut....but it sounds brand new, as though I’d never heard it before! It isn’t only the genius of the soloists and orchestra, for sure; it’s the composition itself. I don’t understand how Bach’s compositions never get old!
I think the best thing about prodigies like Menuhin and Oistrakh is that they can express to you exactly how beautiful the pieces that the composers created really are.
And high regards to the audio recording crew, the camera crew, the camera operators, the film editors, and all those who looked after preserving this fabulous slice of time.
Got to be said that the original recording itself was not done professionally: David Oistrakh's violin is WAY quieter than that of Yehudi. It's sound is muffled, as in fact that of the WHOLE orchestra. This happened because of lousy microphone placing, and the ravages of time. Properly recorded (and newer) audio bursts with space, detail and colour in comparison. Also, sorry about being critical, the visual is crappy - bad and strange angles, awful editing.
Notice the incredible emotion and intensity on the face of Yehudi Menuhin as he plays so gracefully and with such eloquence. David Oistrakh is equally magnificent as the perspiration begins to show on his face, indicative of the effort he puts into his side of the performance. While the entire video is incredible, the second movement is outstanding and is perfectly paced by these two master violinists. This movement is, at minimum, a breathtaking and awe-inspiring sweep of talent, and at its maximum, a truly sublime glimmer of heaven. Bach would be proud of these two geniuses who have graced us with this magnificent rendition of this piece. Thank you for blessing me and all who listen to this.
"Bach would be proud. . . . " No! Bach would be angry! Modern instruments with their colourless sound, and the annoying vibrato all the way! Bach would have teach them both a lesson!
"They both are playing Stradivarius violins!" Interesting, because the colourful sound isn't there anyway. My English is not good enough to explane. But some of the old instruments was changed in different ways during 19th century.
True..... they are, however, almost certainly playing Strads with steel strings and other alterations, introduced in the 19th century, that significantly changed the sound of the violin, making it louder and brighter, but at the expense of some of the 'colour' if you like. The violins of Bach's day would have had cat-gut strings and would have been played without a shoulder or chin rest. The sound is softer and more mellow. I'm not sure which I prefer to be honest, but its worth finding some recording by an English orchestra called the 'Orchestra of the Enlightenment' who play with completely period instruments and hope to achieve a more historically authentic sound.
My father-in-law was a professional musician, violinist. Planning his memorial, as a tribute to him I recorded this performance and several other masterpieces I know he had performed as a young man. Local farm boy became first college graduate circa 1920. Visitors who had never attended classical concerts were in awe at the profound beauty of the music that they had no idea their friend had played .
I'm indescribably proud and happy that my love - David Oistrakh was born in my beautiful native city! Don't you feel like clouds are dancing, and wind is whispering to flowers, trees the most romantic song?Just listen to this beauty and I can assure you as Neuropsychologist you'll find your harmony which is an essential component of happiness. That's classical music 🎶 the soul itself with such HUGE pallet of soul's color... Thanks for adding.I have it on vinyl.Nevertheless, it's already such pleasure that so many people adore classical music like me.
Having played this often, I can recognize this is a real Mount Everest of performance; tempo is marvelous, clarity and the glorious phrasing. is amazing. The second movement is profound without being too sweet. They were giants. When Menuhin made his New York debut, in 1927, age 11, Fritz Kreisler, Mischa Elman and Artur Rubenstein were seated together in Carnegie Hall. After Menuhin played the Beethoven Concerto, Elman remarked "Isn't it a bit warm in here?" Rubenstein's wise crack, priceless, was" Not if you are a Pianist!"
Quel bonheur; quelle excellence, justesse, communion, quelle grandeur toute simple avec humilité;.personnellement je ne vois rien au dessus en duo; grand merci à you tube;
remarkable sound quality, given it's age. These guys are fantastic! So many musicians play Bach like they're in a sprint to the finish. This shows how the masters are patient to let the melody flow in it's own time. Great!
Mesmerizing, transcendent beauty. Yehudi Menuhin sublimely exquisite and beautiful, his understated intensity and love of the music across his face is a marvel. The other great violinist, David Oistrakh, is like a life force of his own steady volcano of continuing, bursting, simmering, unfailing beauty. This is more than a prayer in the hard times we´re going through. Music and nature - what else remains? And seeing Menuhin´s face, one knows the sirvival of freedom and consciousness are always possible.
One of my favourite creations be Bach, actually I think it was created by God and heard and adjusted by the genius of Bach. And the performance is beyond human and brings tears of happiness. Excuse my English, I am just Russian but I m overwhelmed with feelings of something divine
Your English is fine. As usual, this language is constantly enriched by those who speak it as a second one. I remember Yehudi Manuhin visiting Turkey when I was a kid there.

Always one of my favorite Bach pieces what amazing luck to find it now with Menuhin and Oistrakh . Bach can make me believe the divine.

Un concerto straordinario con Yehudi Menuhin e David Oistrakh.... Sublime!!!!
Whenever I hear this concert, I imagine Bach himself, after having finished writing it, with an enormous sense of satisfaction of having created something sublime.
Bach,Menuhin and Oistrakh...I cannot describe how wonderful our earth with them, feeling Heaven when their music begins...
I am in Heaven with all the angels around me. Bach’s music is perfection.
The two maestros playing such divine music together make me feel at peace
in spite of this horrible Covid time.
Thank you for showing us this precious film. I am grateful to you.
Stay all safe. Better days will come back.
We are not able to fully understand Bach's music. Future generations will do that.
Merci proffff j adore et je couche
Genius composer and two of the greatest violinists ever, never fails to move me to tears.
One of the finest pieces ever composed and the performance by Menuhin and Oistrakh absolutely superb!
Bach was a pure Genius!
I noticed the same. Bow handling of Menuhin and Oistrah is different - and the bow handling of Menuhin is just pure genius.
Menuhin: I paid for the whole bow
@@snickydoodle4744 Underrated comment
A composer from very much near the iron curtain as well
That is not relevant at all, I was born in ex, communist Yugoslavia, never had a chance to listen to them in the concert, but personally very great full to Yehudi , he opened the door to the wonderful music world, I was sick , my parents bought me the discs with most violin concertos, Mendelssohn, Bach, Caykovski...... in their interpretations , all new ,wonderful world was there for me ....and still is ,just thanks......
So Much Sincere Comment ! Thank You So Much for being as You Are, Sir!
How can anyone give a thumbs down to this masterpiece . . . played by two of the greatest violinists ever to walk the Earth?!? This is perfection!
John Moonitz Those who don't understand my friend
Ben Rau j,
I heard David and Igor Oistrakh play this work at Newcastle City Hall, UK, in 1968.
If there is a life after death , i want front row seats just to listen to these two geniuses play this very concerto. bliss .
sorry, I already purchased the entire file of seats...

This is, quite simply, as good as it gets. My final refuge from the intolerable ignorance, bigotry, and hatred in the world right now. This divine music restores what faith I have left in our miserable species....
Indeed. It is of a different order of wonder and loveliness. It is a sort of redemption.
I know, I know. Seeing and hearing this performance makes me "proud to be a human being," if I can say such a thing.
It's not all bad...
I'm watching this in 2020 - we need this more than ever to stay sane.
@@philippalmer2741En 2020 PLENA PANDEMIA EN BUENOS AIRES.necesitamos mucho de ellos
That is so interesting.
Sublime composition prodigieux interprètes. C’est l’alignement des planètes
Magnifique David Oistrakh!

This is of such unspeakable beauty, it brings tears to my eyes. Amazing composer, amazing musicians playing on amazing instruments. This truly is an incredible historical recording. (even my little baby in my belly is awake and moving around while listening to this)

That this exists is a pure JOY!
@@john-giovannicorda3456 Absolutely!
Modern instruments? Are you kidding? They both are playing Stradivarius violins! modern instruments indeed
"They both are playing Stradivarius violins!" Interesting, because the colourful sound isn't there anyway. My English is not good enough to explane. But some of the old instruments was changed in different ways during 19th century.
Annette Honickman:
Magnificent performance! Beautiful duet!
True..... they are, however, almost certainly playing Strads with steel strings and other alterations, introduced in the 19th century, that significantly changed the sound of the violin, making it louder and brighter, but at the expense of some of the 'colour' if you like.

Are you connected with David Oistrack

Your English is fine. As usual, this language is constantly enriched by those who speak it as a second one.
I remember Yehudi Manuhin visiting Turkey when I was a kid there.
Yes, yes YES
