Looks like the original tape flaked off some of its coating, which causes the spitting. Because of the strength of the content, you hardly notice it. I wish an original reel of “Jesus of Nazareth” could be found to make a proper transfer of that Zeffirelli masterpiece of color, costume and drama. It is a poor VHS shadow of the original that shows poorly on TV.
Nothing like furstunkin performances of great Russian performers who don't show up for their performances. We all hope comedians and great composers can always connect through eternity, to keep the people entertained, even if not properly informed. The Boston Pop's has always featured great performers.... and Itzhak's always willing to contribute his time. Gives new meaning to the word "con-serts," too. Conned us periodically, entertaining us, continually! "Honey's Variations on a Song by Vivaldi" and " The Great Wolfgang." ("Furerstunkin" the German word for the English word, 'Oops!") Oh, how I would have loved to be there on that evening. Itzhak Perlman is fantastic and has a sense of humor equal to his command of the violin. Decades ago he played at the Peristyle in Toledo. The concert before was the Chinese Opera. I anticipated opera sung by Chinese people. Nope - incredible tumbling, balancing, gymnastics. They taught us to shout Ding How! In appreciation. We, the audience, were season ticket holders; same people at each concert. We really got into the Ding How with gusto. Mr. Perlman played the first number and the audience, as one shouted “Ding How!” His amazement was hilarious. The MC came out to explain. Mr. Perlman’s response was delightful. He seemed to take it as a real compliment. An unforgettable evening.
I think the thing I liked most was seeing the two kids totally enjoying the performance. It's sad that more of the younger generation isn't exposed to this magic.
What a special evening..all these uniquely talented people. Like a large, musical family, playing together, having fun, teasing each other, then concentrating on a momentous moment in time, and marking it with their own special tribute as only they can. It goes into my Library.
What a phenomenal concert/comedy! I also want to give a shout out to my dearly remembered friend violinist Joey Conte (RIP 1998) who I greatly enjoyed seeing in this video.
