- Rabin, Heifetz, Szeryng, and Kogan were the greatest violinists I ever heard, somehow they stood out a little more than everyone else for some reason. I found out a long time ago how hard Kogan's recordings are to find, and I have been collecting them ever since.
I think the best thing Kogan ever did was the Tchaikovsky concerto from a double cd called "Artist Profile", it is out of print but well worth finding and if you ever get a chance to hear Kogan play the Tchaikovsky get it at all costs. Only Rabin equaled what Kogan did with the Tchaikovsky in my opinion.
I have uploaded rare out of print and unreleased recordings that are difficult to find, I hope you like them.

you can FEEL the difference in this performance. the way he clarifies the notes is brilliant.
Full of subtleness and exquisite taste. I have heard hundreds of versions of this piece but I was not expecting to be charmed and surprised to this point. Perfect mastery is necessary to control expression as Leonid did.

Леонид Коган играл сердцем,потому и находит его скрипка отзвуки в наших сердцах, я услышала это еще в детстве по радио,и с тех пор именно его исполнение является для меня эталоном.
Every, more or less capable, solo playing, concert Violinist. Has this piece in his(her's) repertoire. But only few, can play it. And even less where able to do something delicious. Kogan was one of those, rare, capable of playing it, just like he is just sharing a story with people. I had chance to meet this fantastic, very humble, incredible maestro. No one, plays Paganini, like Kogan. There is one more, Yuri Merzhevsky. But unfortunately he died too young, at the age of 45. And the is only few Paganini recordings by him. Thank you Mr. Kogan.

I heated many wonderful violinist. None of them gave me the emotion of Leonid Logan. You can feel his soul in his performance.

So many performances we can choose to listen now in the age of Internet. A lot of old recordings, and more new musicions' shows with astonishing techniques. Some trend goes through competitions to force speed, speed, insane speed. In lots of cases insane speed leading to miserable musical impression. For example, some Chinese F. something, forgot his name, plays like robot terrible fast. But with no MUSIC AT ALL. I got disgusted few times when stumbled across that anti-musical crime.
*Kogan's performance reminds us what REAL MUSIC IS.* After so many heard performances, of which lots seems more commercial than artistical, with our ears full of commercial sound, Kogan's music flows like clear water somewhere in springtime surrounded by green grass and colorful flowers. So refreshing, so new, every tone played sincerely, like it should be in real music. What else to say - real artist Mr Kogan, hats down.
The Tutti at 5:50 makes this even better.
He is seriously the most underrated violinist ever. To me - music is in the ear of the beholder of course- his playing is much more emotional than Heifitz. Don't get me wrong Heifitz is one hell of a violinist. His music just doesn't touch me.

Indeed Leonid Kogan belonged to the absolut top of his generation. It has always been difficult to get recordings from Kogan outside of Russia during the USSR time. We've missed out a lot. What a musician! And what a beautiful violin he availed of. Thank you so much for uploading the music of this heavenly soul
This is early recording when Kogan played on very good violin (either Stradivari or Guarneri ) from Governmental collection. At the later time when Kogan managed to buy violin by Guarneri del Gesu he was not very satisfied with it and asked a lot Soviet government to allow him to give more concerts abroad, because he wanted to get money for another violin. Kogan's daughter tells that in his notebook there are notes about more than 100 calls to Minister of Culture which remained without answer...

So beautiful technic and sound of violine - I think it was one of two Guarneri del Gesú he usually used. This production is one of the best I think. What brillant violinist! Thank you very much for recording.

I know his styl of playng very well. Thank you for answering. And I can recommend you to hear one of the big violinist from my country Váša Příhoda: jdem.cz/bttbm2 . He was older than mister Kogan and he lives all of his life out of Czechoslovakia. But he was one of the great violinist of his age. Have a nice day.
+Leonid Polonsky Dear Leonid in my country there were more excellent violinist in last years. There are a big tradition in this toolyou really knows. Also Josef Slavík was excellent violinist if I goes it from the 19.th century. The great Paganini told him: "You´r diablo!". His sole concert for violine is very sad and one of the most beautiful from all famous concerts in the world you really know. But very hard to play technically. Jan Kubelík was typical technical player and I also more prefer style of playing like Josef Suk. Very good player was there also Jaroslav Kocián - great pedagog in last years in his life and also Václav Snítil - he died several days ago unfortunatelly. I´m very glad everytime when I have occasion to read that Czech violinist of last age was in remembering in other peoples. And I very hate you your knowledge to playing violine. My father plays very well to time when he was hurted in last days of II.world war. It was unfortunatelly accident but his playing in violine ended. I heared classical music especially pieces for violine from my early young. Thank you Leonid for your answering I´m very glad. Grumiaux had the purest sound however it is not always the one i prefer ;). Rabin had an extraordinary sound, Ferras, wonderfull sound most of time as Francescatti. But we can't forget Franco Gulli which were incredible.

my favourite performance of this masterpiece is one recorded by Rudolf Koelman, who was a pupil of Heifetz. He retains his individuality from Heifetz, while a great technician plays so rapidly that the some of the beauty of the music is lost in my opinion.
I'd never heard of Koelman before and the richness of his tone and his awesome ability to build up suspensefully to the climax is without parallel.

I like more how Henryk Szeryng performed it, here I see the Soviet manner of playing passages faster than they meant to be played by an author, I guess to show the skill superiority both for the solo player and the orchestra. Mr Szeryng with Hungarian orchestra played it just perfect, I'm always listening to his execution when I recall Saint Saens. Another glorious performance of Saint Saens I would note is Piano Concerto #2 executed by Grigory Sokolov.
It is a shame that KOGAN has not be given more international attencion. Thanks to Russia who gave us KOGan and many more….

Когда объявили, что умер Л. Коган ко мне в класс, в время урока, ворвался один молодой человек и заорал " ваш Коган сдох! А наш, Б.... С ещё долго будет играть. Этому Б.....у, до Когана, было примерно, как от Киева до Сахалина пешком. Талант местного разлива. А вот поди ж ты. И это был ни пацан с улицы, а официальный представитель рай отдела культуры. Сколько мне суждено прожить, столько я буду это помнить.

послушайте ещё раз ruclips.net/video/DR6CGXneIuI/видео.html. я в скрипичной терминологии не разбираюсь, но после пары сотен прослушиваний могу сказать - у Когана более напористая и резкая манера игры, у Хейфеца - более игривая, что ли. Относительно этого конкретного произведения.
Это 100000% Коган. Его вибрацию и атаку звука невозможно перепутать.
