- Rabin, Heifetz, Szeryng, and Kogan were the greatest violinists I ever heard, somehow they stood out a little more than everyone else for some reason. I found out a long time ago how hard Kogan's recordings are to find, and I have been collecting them ever since. One day I met someone from maestronet named Hector who agreed to send me a copy of this for which I am greatful. I have never seen it for sale ever and I have been collecting violin music for a long time.
I think the best thing Kogan ever did was the Tchaikovsky concerto from a double cd called "Artist Profile", it is out of print but well worth finding and if you ever get a chance to hear Kogan play the Tchaikovsky get it at all costs. Only Rabin equaled what Kogan did with the Tchaikovsky in my opinion.
I have uploaded rare out of print and unreleased recordings that are difficult to find, I hope you like them.

несомненно Леонид Коган великий виртуоз. Он первый исполнил в одном концерте все каприсы Паганини. Но что касается данной записи и его интерпретации Каприса 24 , то мне кажется что Коган слишком лирично его исполнил. В истории музыки Паганини несет в себе некую демонскую черту. А этому больше соотвествует исполнение этого каприса Крыловым или Венгеровым. Там мощь и напор, здесь же при всей виртуозности некая меланхолия!

Kogan's interpretations of Paganini are easily the best I've heard. You can see some footage of him on RUclips playing on Paganini's own violin - I think there are few people who would be worthy enough to do so.

This is my favorite interpretation of paganini's 24. It's odd, wiki says that he was criticized for using all steel strings because it lacked depth, warmth, and sweetness but his playing is oozing with depth and emotion in this piece all while being clear and melodic. Love it.
"They" also said that Oistrakh's Stradivarius wasn't one of the "better" ones... sounded just fine and dandy when he played it...

For anyone wondering, this version of the 24th caprice is a mix of the Fritz Kreisler's and the Leopold Auer's versions and includes variations from Paganini's original work.
It is mostly Kreisler's version, but in Kreisler's there is only 8 variations, Kogan includes some variations from Paganini's original work, like the third variation (octaves) whis is omitted in Kreisler's version, and he also plays violin solo as it was originally intended; Kreisler's and Auer's versions are recital version arrangements which both include piano acompaniment; Kreisler's includes a final variation (8th Kreisler's variation) which is slow and all harmonics which here, is omitted and replaced by Auer's Finale variation instead; Auer's version is the one Heifetz plays is his famous recording with piano accompaniment.

He has such an intense and yet humble way to play !
i like that kogan doesn't play this in the flashy manner heifetz does. granted, this is audio and it does look cool to watch heifetz go nuts on the violin. but i think it betrays a tenderness in kogan's approach to the violin that's overlooked sometimes
I totally agree here. This sounds so good. Imagine having a very good recording piece of it with good sound quality headphones, on the side of somewhere cool breeze hitting on your face and imagining Kogan playing it. God, I love this music so much

@@user-fb9xj2cj1n, согласна с Вами полностью, услышав данную запись после записи Крылова, но почему-то когановская меланхолия, на мой слух, по-особенному трогательна. А Сергея Крылова посчастливилось услышать сегодня в Свердловской Филармонии с Пятым концертом Паганини! Это было превосходно!!!

@@user-fb9xj2cj1n, кстати, это редакция каприса Аэура и самого Когана, последовательность некоторых вариаций другая. А некоторых вариаций нет вообще.
Поэтому СКРИПКА и есть королева музыки, когда в руках таких КОРОЛЕЙ!

I saw Kogan perform in Chicago's Orchestra Hall in the 1950's, and I can assure you that he totally connected with that audience--an incomparable performance and an unbelievable standing ovation.

Check out Kavakos (the one that was filmed on a potato). It's very different from Kogan. Both are awesome.

А мне наоборот, больше Яшино исполнение с клавишным опомпонементом нравится.
У Хейфица - безукоризненная техника,а у маэстро Когана - в каждой ноте - отзвук сердца.... Не зря же в отечественном минителесериале "Никколо Паганини" соло скрипки великого Паганини исполнил именно Леонид Коган.

so far as I have been able to listen to various CDs of Kogan's Tchaikovsky, I find the Arlecchino Legacy Vol.II 1950 version with the USSR TV and Radio Large Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vasili Nebolsin to be the most beautiful and most moving recording, It unquestionably stands as one of the greatest performances of any music.

Kogan hat zweifelsohne einen Genius gehabt. Und dieser dürfte zu seiner Schülerin Mullova übergelaufen haben. Ich war gestern im Musikverein in Wien: diese Geige sollte man einem Heer vorausschicken.

thank you for the work you do. i prefere faster and more explosive versions but it's interesting to listen to it from this perspective especially because i expect it to explode at anytime but it does not. haha it's amazing
Right?? You keep expecting him to go ham, but he doesn't need to. The intensity is off the charts. This ending gives me so many problems, to hear him jump around with perfect intonation and that ferocity blows my mind.
