@@zeta9961 Sorry just saw this now! It's the Profoto B1X strobe - you can see it in the video and there are links below the video to it if you want to check it out on Amazon. Thanks for watching!
It took me some time to realize that the 24-105 F4 at 105mm F4 has more background blur than the 24-70mm at 70mm 2.8. I used a DOF calculator to check and was surprised. That makes the 24-105 almost more useful as a general wide angle and telephoto combined, and lighter weight than the 24-70. If I need faster on the wide end, I'll use my 15-35mm 2.8 or primes. The RF version is even sharper and image quality is stunning.
Completely agree! And very interesting on the DOF calculations. I find myself reaching for my 24-105 more so than my 24-70. Thanks for the comments and for watching!
Yepp it’s not a difficult calculation. The ratio 105/4 is bigger then 70/2.8:) but even 50 1.8 has more background blur. Primes win anytime but of course it’s more versatile. I’m using 35 1.8 50 1.4 and 85 1.2. The last one is a dream for portrait but if you need to shoot events it’s possible that f4 is enough
I know this is an older video, but I bought a 24-105 this year and just shot a wedding with it. It is a VERY solid performer, and you can get one for a great price on the used market! Thanks for posting this.
Thank you so much for this comment!! I have my first wedding coming up and I’m wondering if my 24-105 mm will be enough! I only have a 50mm prime otherwise and I just feel like that’s definitely not enough! I’ve loved my 24-105 so far, but have been discouraged by the professionals!
@BarbsRosa Don't be discouraged! I've shot more than 40,000 photographs since I commented, and most were done with my 24-105. For me, the depth of field on a 2.8 lens would be too shallow. A true "professional" would know how to use an F4 lens.
Just bought one of these, so interesting to see your portraits of the lovely model, they look fantastic. I think I will have fun with it, for portraits. By the way, the ocean makes a great backdrop!
hi, how are you going, ejoyed this video very much, excellent photo shoot, useful info, loved it all, me planing to get 24-105 very soon, just needed some info which got it from you, thank you for the fantastic job🥴
Excellent portraits! It's great when the person knows what they're doing. I never understood why this lens is so underrated. I just love this model. I found a brand new one, in the box, never used, and I bought it yesterday for a whopping $500! This is the third one I've bought, I started using it along with the classic 5D Makr3 but today I use it on the Canon EOS R mirrorless.
I really appreciate y’all making this video, as it was super helpful and exciting to see how versatile the EF 24-105 is. I just bought one used after watching!
I'm so glad I saw this video. I have this sense in a box in my closet. I'll take it out and use it!!! I don't have the strobe though and it looks like it played a major role in these beautiful photo images. I will play around with my external flash and with my reflector. See what shakes out. Thanks again for sharing!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes definitely use the lens if you have it. It’s such a great lens :) the strobe does help fill in the light but a good reflector can also get you similar results. Good luck and happy shooting! 😁📸
Thinking of this lens to use with my M50. With a speed booster it’s a constant 2.8 or with a normal adapter, it’s 168mm at the long end which is plenty for most situations.
Haha right on! Glad it was helpful :) I agree a lot of time people worry too much about the aperture instead of actually shooting! Thanks for stopping by and watching!
Do you notice any difference in images between the 5D and R6 using the EF lens? I don't mean sharpness, but rather the overall look and feel of the images?
@@ggwildlife I have a 6D and combined with the EF 24-105mm my gosh, what a combo. Love it for portraits. I want to get a used R6 to reduce some weight and have improved AF but I was fearing a significan difference of the lens rendering on the modern camera. Thanks for your reply!
As a first "jump" into canon's EOS R line, I picked up the 24-105mm/ F4 with the EOS R mostly as a zoom, but also trying flowers close ups at mostly plus or minus 85mm like a portrait lens and did like the back round blur effect. Yet your review was addressing questions I had about taking " pretty woman " photographs with this lens. Yet I think I will keep my traditional lenses around. John
What a good performing lens. Pixel peepers complain about it, but everything is relative. Having some good skill with framing and using light to your advantage seems to have paid off in your lovely pictures.
@@michaelbell75 RF 85 is super sharp and beautiful - sharper than the EF. Something I still love about the EF 85 1.2 though, and it's a little lighter than the RF version. The EF just seems to have a bit more pleasing bokeh and more of a 3D effect than the RF to my eyes anyway.
So happy to see this video,I just ordered this lens to use it for portraits and read mixed reviews of how it's not good for portraits.Currently using 85 for my portraits and as much as I love prime lens,I want to try a zoom lens. Thanks for this video, you're right it's all about who is behind the camera :p
@@jerry.cray_II I had the chance to use it last Thanksgiving,I took a Christmas family session and the photos turned out good ,looking forward to be using it more during summer.
The 85mm is the easy choice :) and we do have a video on shooting portraits with that lens too, but like we talk about in this video, we wanted to see how portraits would look using the 24-105. Cheers! Here’s a link to the 85mm video for you: ruclips.net/video/TRpCIaBZf1o/видео.html
It’s not the same to walk closer with a wide angle lens or walk more far away. Even the face of the subject will look totally different and the background compression is different. With a wide angle lens if you go closer you still have more of the background. In a beautiful place or in city where you need the background in the frame it’s useful but when you need just your model thhe it’s better to use tele lens. Any of the prime lens will be probably better if you have the possibility to change them but if would like to use just one as it’s comfortable and more practical this lens will give you the possibility to create quite good portraits as well at the the tele end f4. Of course comparing to 85 1.2 it’s less unique but you need to decide what is more important to you.:) Im using only prime lens but I’m curious would I like this zoom lens or not.
Yeah good points. What I like to do is force myself to just use one lens and only bring the one lens to shoot for a weekend or on a shoot and then if you find it’s too limiting try something else. But I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I was!
How is it for headshots at corporate events? I'm using a Canon R3, and I have a few Lumipad 25's for lighting. I was planning to load the Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS II USM, but this lens would be a whole lot easier to handle...
I think it works great for that. As long as you don’t need the extra reach. It’s smaller and a bit easier to handle than the 70-200. Thanks for stopping by the channel!
I use this badass for many years, great lens, you do not need bokeh at 24 mm, if you need it just slide it to 105mm and see the bokeh. Not best for sure, but great for this kind of lens value
@@FilmJams Same, was seriously on the fence/considering buying this, and went through my "best shots" of a summer photo job and noticed 90% were on the 24-105! Mind made.
@@FilmJams I have just about every L lens up to 200mm given I've been using Canon for so long. The V1 24-105 is surprisingly my most used lens EVER as I've had it since it came out when I got it with one of my 5D's cannot remember if it was the Mk1 or Mk2?? Or the D1s Mk whatever... It's pretty much my go-to lens in the studio as if I use the 24-70 I may as well be using two primes given how often I switch between 35/50-ish and 85/100-ish for any given outfit/setup/etc. Having said that I bought my R with the new 24-105 RF... is it "better" = sure if you look really really close, would clients ever know??? or regular people that just look at the picture? NO WAY.
Robert Boyer hi Robert! Thanks for watching. Completely agree! We have most of the primes too but in studio I’m normally shooting at f/4 and the 24-105 is such a great focal range for that and not too heavy. I’ve also started shooting more with my 70-200 f/4 IS v2 Lens. So much lighter than my 70-200 f2.8 and getting some great shots with it. What you mentioned about the RF 24-105 is what I’ve heard from others as well. That’s the reason I haven’t upgraded, I’ve just really been happy with the older EF 24-105 v1 on my EOS R!
Nice. Well depends on the environment and the light. At sunset like in this video I used a Profoto strobe to key the talent and the sunset as the hair/backlight. You can literally see the Shutter Speed, Aputure, and ISO settings on all the photos in the video in the bottom left corner….have you watched the video?
Nice! Hello, I have a plan to buy a lens for my canon 6d. Could you recommend 24-105 F4 or 17-40 F4 prefer? in terms of sharpness and softness of the image?
Hi Eko! Thanks for watching. I’d have to go with the 24-105. I find it sharper and more universal. The only reason to go for the 17-40 in my opinion is if you want that wider focal length. But the 24-105 is a better lens overall to me. Hope that helps. Good luck! 👍📸
Hiya, absolute beginner here, can you pleeeease, do a video explaining, in idiots terms, the meaning of all the number lenses carry. Just when I think I've got it sussed, I realise I haven't. And for some reason, as far as I can tell, no one has done a simple video explaining focal length for newbies.
Hi there! Thanks for watching! I do believe we have a video on different focal lengths. It’s probably a couple years back. But will try to incorporate the lens info into a future video!
@FilmJams thank you! I'm sure I'm not alone in not fully understanding the numbers. I'd love to learn more so do genuinely think this would help me and many others
Good video and thanks for posting. I may be the contrarian here, for the shots where she is not backlit and her face is prominent, I thought that the focus looked soft. It's almost as though the focus points for the shots were on the torso as it appeared sharper than the face. Just my 2¢.
Thanks for watching Steve. That’s interesting...the shots were all pretty sharp when I was editing on my 27” monitor. There may be one that the focus was slightly off but I typically shoot a few of each pose and then select the sharpest. RUclips compression could also be making them look softer than they are.
I'm very new to photography in fact I only have a Canon T6i nothing fancy mainly for taking pictures of milestones for my daughter. it came with at 18-55mm lens basic kit, it recently broke but I have enjoyed using my camera and wanted to upgrade for something similar but a little better quality lens, would you suggest this lens for someone who just takes home pictures everyday day use? I found one used for $350 and just not sure if it would be worth it? the 18-55mm standard lens is about $200
Well I definitely think the 24-105 is an upgrade over the 18-55. Especially if you’re planning to take portraits. Getting that extra range is well worth it in my opinion. Hope that helps!
Hii.. Actually i am just about to start photography with DSLR camera.. It is my passion and i just love it.. And i am thinking to start with A canon 6D mark 2, a 50mm f1.8 and a 24-105 f4..as i am on a budget.. So is that combination good enough? Or you can give me any better suggestion?
Nivreto Neloy if you’re just starting, that’s more than I had! I think you’ll do great. Use the gear you have and see what you like and don’t like. If you want to do more wide angle shooting or landscapes maybe a 16-35 could be in your future...or if you’re a portrait person an 85mm might be a good next lens. I think it’s best to try some things out and see what you like before you spend a ton of money on gear. We have a lot of other videos on lenses if you’d like to check those out for more insights. Good luck!

For sure! They’d called Profoto B1X strobes. They’re amazing. Battery powered and high speed sync (shutter speed up to 1/8000). We have links below the video in the description text if you want to check them out. And we also show them off a bit more in this video here: ruclips.net/video/IuVDKNAwoVQ/видео.html
I believe the talent is in the hands of the cameraman …so doesn’t matter what kind of lens you use and if you want to get a photo and you know what you’re looking for you’re going to get it no matter what kind of camera you had if you know what you’re doing
The flash gives you the hdr like result. First you should set the exposure to get a perfect background and then you set your keylight to light your subject. You can use other lightsource aswell but flash is more powerful then led.
Adrian Degg I like it a lot for studio as most of the time I’m shooting f/4 or higher anyway there. And having the zoom range 24-105mm is a nice range for most studio stuff. It’s normally on my camera if I’m in the studio.
@@FilmJams firstly thanks for the speedy response. I have recently gone full frame, purchasing a used 6D and I shoot portraits in a studio setting quite often so normally shooting at F6 - F8. . Would you recommend this combination? I like it's versatility outdoors but I'd like to know it will serve me well indoors too?
Adrian Degg for sure! Glad to help...anytime! I think it’s a great combo with a full frame 6D. And actually I like it better in the studio than outside. I’d say go for it!
How is the dust sealing on this particular RF lens? I've heard photographers having a nightmare with Tamron and Sigma's current 24-70 due to dust getting sucked in to the lens due to poor sealing on the extending lens barrel. To your knowledge, does the RF F4 24-105mm L have a filter between the extending barrel and the main barrel to prevent dust from getting sucked into the lens? Or in your extensive use of the lens, have you detected any issues with dust [long term use]?
This is the EF version but I use it at the beach all the time and have had it for at least 6 years and never had any issues but I always clean my gear and take care of it pretty well. Hope that helps!
I’d Definitely go with the 24-105. The extra length is what makes it usable for portraits. If you’re doing 24-70 I would recommend going with the 2.8 version as it makes it a lot more versatile and it’s much sharper than the f4 version.
@@FilmJams I was thinking the range was the selling factor for me too. I would've gone for the 24-70 but i agree that the 2.8 is needed for that one too. Thanks you!
@@axlesnappers I prefer the 24-70mm 2.8 for most situations especially if you need the extra light. But the 24-105 is a little more versatile as an all-arounder with the extra reach. Tough choice - I’d probly go 24-70 ....but I think you can’t go wrong with either.
@@FilmJams Ah, OK, that makes complete sense, of course! Much appreciated (and fastest response I've ever had on YT!). If I can ask another question, confused by your reference to a 'control ring' and using it for ISO. My (v1) just has a regular Zoom ring. Did I misunderstand? On photography holiday in Croatia, will be using this lens for portrait photography, really enjoyed your video.
@@justiceformenboys Haha! We try to respond to everyone on here :) Gotta show some love for the audience! Yes the control ring is an adapter you can buy for the EOS R that connects EF lenses to R mount cameras. Here's a link if you'd like to learn more about it: amzn.to/3obebac
how are you keeping the exposure even from top to bottom of the frame when shooting with a shutter greater than 200, how have you overcome the curtain shadow
These Profoto strobes have HSS or High Speed Sync. It let’s you go up to 8000 shutter speed unlike conventional strobes that can only refresh at 200 Shutter. They’re pricey, but were total game changers for me!
I would like to know about the sharpness at 100% zoom. I have a 50mm f1.8 lens and as a beginner photographer I struggle getting crisp photos when I zoom in. The sharpness close to the eyes is lost. I use an APS-C mirrorless camera.
It's not the sharpest lens, but you can easily sharpen a bit in post. You can see the sharpness in the photos in the video - hopefully that can give you an idea of look though we did shoot on full frame. Most are shot at 105mm (100% zoom).
Ashish Tiwari And maybe close down your Aperture a bit more. Don’t shot wide open at 1.8. 2.2/2.8 is already beter than 1.8 and gives you a bit more depth of field
Waus I agree. Many people believe you need to be shooting at f1.8 or 2.8 but you can get great results shooting at f/4 even and less chance you’ll miss focus and lose that one shot you love!
Ashish Tiwari it depends. If you shoot low light there are situations where F4 just isn’t enough and where 1.8 to 2.8 might come in handy. It also depends on what the distance is to your subject. If you’re closer to your subject you’ll get a shallower depth of field than shooting from a distance. And there are also lenses that are razor sharp from wide open to stopped down.
The Drawing sensei we have both and they’re both great. I think for portraits, video interviews, and more general use the 24-105 is a little more versatile especially because it has image stabilization. If you’re using it for film as well that makes a huge difference for being able to hand hold. But if you are doing more low light type shooting and don’t need the reach of the 105mm then the Sigma 18-35 with its 1.8 aperture is a great option too.
Kravence there’s a mixture of both “with flash” and “without flash” in this video. The shots at 2:24, 2:34, 2:36, 2:45, 2:51, 2:56 etc don’t have flash. You can tell because there is no key light. When you’re shooting into the sun you need a key light otherwise the shots will all be silhouettes like the shots at 2:24. When you say the flash “separates the person from the background too much” I’m assuming you don’t mean these 8 or so shots as there’s almost zero separation from the background on them. Either way, the great thing about photography is you can adjust to your taste. Personally I like lighting my subjects sometimes and mixing it up with more natural light other times - but if you only like a certain type of lighting and that’s your bag, go for it :) send us some links to your no flash photos at sunset so we can check them out!
Thanks for watching! I think you could get similar results but keep in mind the T7 is an APS-C sensor so will have a crop factor and your photos won’t be quite as wide. But if you’re looking for tighter portraits, the 24-105mm will work quite well!
I am following you now buddy! I am located in Tampa, maybe we can get together sometime to do some shooting together! I have the Godox 400pro. By the way, I was looking for a video review on this lens since I do Live Event. Having the flexibility of 24-105mm will help me to not be changing lenses, I just wish it was an F/2.8
JN Creative Videos thanks for the follow! For sure. I’m down. Have wanted to try the Godox! And yes the 24-105 is great for live event. If it were 2.8 it might be the perfect lens! Still good at f/4 tho. Just give me a shout whenever you want to shoot!
Andrey Kasyanov hi Andrey, we created this video to test shooting portraits on the 24-105mm lens...not necessarily about the camera body. Also I don’t have the RF version 😬
Many people upgrading from Canon would have existing EF lenses around. You don't need to buy a rf 24-105 if the old Ef 24-105 works well. Appreciate this video a lot.
W C thanks WC! Glad it was helpful. And yes that’s exactly where we are at - we have a lot of EF glass and slowly upgrading to RF. The EF lenses work great tho with the adapter!
@@FilmJams definitely would love to see more old lens used on the R. I'm getting the R myself soon so it would be cool to see which lens work great or not on the system.
W C true! We have a playlist with about 20 videos we’ve done on the EOS R with a variety of different lenses. You can see a lot of the older EF lenses in action. Here’s a link to the playlist for ya! ruclips.net/p/PLMX4BQsnjAt8f_8KnpERU1EBBSqBaIMr6
@@serazvictoria9845 nah in the beginning of the video we clearly talk about how we will use only 50-105mm range for portraits. The lens name in the title is 24-105mm f/4. If you want to see some 24mm portraits, try this video: ruclips.net/video/grQV2QpdNIQ/видео.html
Lots of reasons. First I already own the EF lenses of which there are so many options. EF lenses also perform better on the R cameras than on EF cameras. Huge improvement. Plus they’re way cheaper. I think Canon said it best themselves: “For existing Canon shooters using EF and EF-S lenses, the transition to full-frame mirrorless has been helped by the selection of EF-EOS R mount adapters available, which not only allow these lenses to work seamlessly on EOS R System cameras, but add functionality and even improve the optical performance of lenses.”
5pu7nik yeah? I don’t watch them but I’ve used on a hundred or so “Pro” jobs and love it ;) if someone tells you not to use something always see why - make sure they don’t have an agenda. Maybe they’re paid by a competitor to say those things. Maybe not, but we’re an independent channel so haven’t sold out yet haha!
It's probably because the EOR R has only one card slot. If you're confident in the tech then it's perfectly fine. I'm currently weighing the Canon EOS R with 24-105 and the Nikon Z6 ii with 24-70. Leaning toward Nikon for the dual card slots. Nikon has a 24-105 planned for the future.
@@FilmJams Funny you should mention that. I STILL use my Profoto 7B packs and heads I purchased in like ummmm... 2003?? Same goes for most of the Profoto gear I've invested in. Cameras have come and gone all of my quality grip and lights still around and augmented with some of the newer stuff like B1's B2's, D2's and even a couple A1's. Just as an aside I texted a photographer friend of mine yesterday while fooling around with some lay-flat setups while on lockdown regarding my EF 24-105 L lens. I said while using it for those setups that that 24-105 L was probably the most cost effective lens I've ever purchased. I got it around 2006 or 2007 and have had it through many cameras, I even kept it for the short time I didn't own a canon body. I've probably shot more images on that lens than any other single lens I've ever owned. Sure, I love my more exotic glass, Canon, Zeiss, whatever but when it comes to versatility it's hard to beat the 24-105. Even in studio or more commercial situations where I'm shooting a wide variety of perspectives and crops for look books, model tests, or life style stuff. It's FAR FAR better using the 24-105L than constantly switching between a 24-70 and a 70-200 or even a couple of primes. Even with using two bodies it's usually better for two reasons: first I shoot tethered A LOT under those conditions and it's obviously easier with one body. Second... if you have a great mood/vibe/flow working with a model or a client it's stupid to wreck it just to change cameras or lenses. I learned this early on shooting lifestyle stuff.
Robert Boyer hi Robert! Thanks for the message. That’s amazing that your Profoto’s are still going from 2003! I hope to get the same life out of my B1X and D2’s. But yes they are such great lights - Solid, reliable, and beautiful light quality. Great points about the 24-105. If you’re shooting with a client why break-up the vibe to swap lenses. It took me a while to learn that one, but so true! And in the studio we’re typically shooting f4 or higher anyway. So the fancy f1.2 primes don’t look a whole lot different. Thanks for stopping by the channel and happy shooting! To another 10 years shooting with your 24-105 and Profotos! 😀📸
Why? A great team makes better work. And it was just one flash and one assistant holding it because of the wind. Maybe next time we’ll bring the masseuse and catering tho! ;) But it sounds like you’re into a more stripped down shooting style, and you can definitely see samples of that here with some New York street photography (just me, model, and the EOS R) - ruclips.net/video/Ot5BGGr5dI4/видео.html

@BarbsRosa Don't be discouraged! I've shot more than 40,000 photographs since I commented, and most were done with my 24-105. For me, the depth of field on a 2.8 lens would be too shallow. A true "professional" would know how to use an F4 lens.

Nice! That’s a great deal for the 24-105. Enjoy it on the R. Great combo. And thanks for stopping by the channel and watching!
I really appreciate y’all making this video, as it was super helpful and exciting to see how versatile the EF 24-105 is. I just bought one used after watching!
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing that! Really glad to hear it was helpful. Happy shooting! 😀👍📸

This was SUPER helpful as I am a novice trying to figure out how to make the most of my lens! Thanks so much!

Took mine out and blew the dust off it!! Can’t wait to give it a go
That's awesome! Have fun with it :D
Thinking of this lens to use with my M50. With a speed booster it’s a constant 2.8 or with a normal adapter, it’s 168mm at the long end which is plenty for most situations.
Nice. Yeah that should work well! Thanks for watching.
I thought the same, have you tried it yet ?
Watching your video makes me happy

been looking to pick up one of these recently.
this vid has sold it for me. less complaining about the aperture and more using the thing ✅ great video
Haha right on! Glad it was helpful :) I agree a lot of time people worry too much about the aperture instead of actually shooting! Thanks for stopping by and watching!
love this lens its a solid work horse no matter, still have mine on the R6/5D mkIII
Nice! Yes I agree. A great solid performer!
Do you notice any difference in images between the 5D and R6 using the EF lens? I don't mean sharpness, but rather the overall look and feel of the images?
@@lionheart4424 no difference superb on both.
John
Well thanks for watching! Happy shooting!
I've got that same Black Rapid camera strap, I loooove it. I'm about to buy this lens too locally for a great deal. The MK II version though.
That's awesome! Love my Black Rapid strap too! Enjoy the lens...Always nice to grab a good deal
What a good performing lens. Pixel peepers complain about it, but everything is relative. Having some good skill with framing and using light to your advantage seems to have paid off in your lovely pictures.
I agree! It impresses me every time I use it. Thanks for the kind words! And happy shooting 😆👍
thanks for making this video! I've been waiting for awhile to see a portrait shoot video with this zoom range. Great job!!
Thanks! Appreciate you watching and glad it was helpful. It was a fun challenge shooting without our go to 85mm :)
@@FilmJams How does it compare to the RF 85?
@@michaelbell75 RF 85 is super sharp and beautiful - sharper than the EF. Something I still love about the EF 85 1.2 though, and it's a little lighter than the RF version. The EF just seems to have a bit more pleasing bokeh and more of a 3D effect than the RF to my eyes anyway.
@@FilmJams Thanks but I meant how does the RF 24-105 compare to the RF 85

@@RufatYagubov Thanks so much! We've got one coming tomorrow! Have a good one.... :)
It’s a around usable lens so yes you can use it for a portrait! But if you could use a 85mm and just walk in or walk back from your subject!
I was!
Hi there, great photo shoot Which camera strap is that? Do you have the exact name? Thanks in advance.
Thanks! Appreciate that! We have the link below in the description to the exact model. 😆👍
Cool all around lens, great review !
Thanks Tolits! It is really versatile and almost always in my kit. Glad you enjoyed the review!
I'd say the 24-105mm f/4 is more than enough (almost can considered as "overkill") for most of the amateur users (such as me).
Thanks for watching. It’s a great lens for sure!
Right on! It’s definitely a great lens for the money, and aside from that Ive shot some of my favorite pics on it. Thanks for watching!
@@FilmJams Same, was seriously on the fence/considering buying this, and went through my "best shots" of a summer photo job and noticed 90% were on the 24-105! Mind made.
Alex Fields haha that’s awesome! Yes it’s super versatile and if you can only take one lens- it’s always my go to! :)
I swear, even being an f4 lens this can have that so called "3D pop" effect. Once you see it you cannot leave it behind.
I love my copy!
It’s one of the most underrated lenses! I agree. So nice! Thanks for stopping by the channel.
Hello. I have a Canon Rebel T3i with the Canon 24-105mm. What settings do you recommend for outdoor portraits? Thank you for your time.
Nice. Well depends on the environment and the light. At sunset like in this video I used a Profoto strobe to key the talent and the sunset as the hair/backlight. You can literally see the Shutter Speed, Aputure, and ISO settings on all the photos in the video in the bottom left corner….have you watched the video?

Haha Thanks Shane! 😁
it's funnier when you watch it in 1.75x ;)
Good luck! 👍📸
stupid question
Really hits the spot on 105mm
Definitely! It’s a great portrait lens on the longer end

I just bought R6 mark ii can I shoot portrait with RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM lens?, thank for this video
You’re welcome! I imagine you could just might not have as much shallow depth.

Aj Malone pretty similar. Maybe a hair sharper on the RF.
I like how you kept the HDR in the direct sun. Did you edit in post or were you using a HDR mode? Usually all my shots get blown out backgrounds
Hey! Thanks for watching. I did not use HDR or bracket…just tweaked the exposure a bit in post. Using a flash helps to keep those highlights.
The flash gives you the hdr like result. First you should set the exposure to get a perfect background and then you set your keylight to light your subject. You can use other lightsource aswell but flash is more powerful then led.
Exactly. And u have to be careful not to use too much flash or it can look very artificial- unless that’s what you’re going for!

The EOS R is a full frame sensor and not an APSC cropped sensor right?
Daniel Brunal yessir Full Frame :)
How does it compare to the 24-70 at f/4 as well? Is the extra length worth the cost?
I’d Definitely go with the 24-105. The extra length is what makes it usable for portraits. If you’re doing 24-70 I would recommend going with the 2.8 version as it makes it a lot more versatile and it’s much sharper than the f4 version.
@@FilmJams I was thinking the range was the selling factor for me too. I would've gone for the 24-70 but i agree that the 2.8 is needed for that one too. Thanks you!
Justin J Pagan definitely! Good luck!
@@FilmJams would you recommend the 2.8 24-70 over the f4 24-105? I like to do street and car photography with some darker shots!?
@@axlesnappers I prefer the 24-70mm 2.8 for most situations especially if you need the extra light. But the 24-105 is a little more versatile as an all-arounder with the extra reach. Tough choice - I’d probly go 24-70 ....but I think you can’t go wrong with either.

how are you keeping the exposure even from top to bottom of the frame when shooting with a shutter greater than 200, how have you overcome the curtain shadow
These Profoto strobes have HSS or High Speed Sync. It let’s you go up to 8000 shutter speed unlike conventional strobes that can only refresh at 200 Shutter. They’re pricey, but were total game changers for me!
You user external lighting, i would have wanted to see how it performs without that aid.
You want to see how a lens performs with bad lighting…Why?
@FilmJams I wanted to see how the lens performs without the aid of an external light if the shots are usable at all in a similar setting.

Yes you can. We use on our a7s 2. You just need a Sony E mount to Canon EF Mount adapter.
@@FilmJams Ok thanks, but there is no adapter for RF lenses, correct?
JT for Sony to RF? not that I know of.
@@wiebstar I wonder why do lens manufacturers advertise a smaller f number when it's not useful at all?
Ashish Tiwari it depends. If you shoot low light there are situations where F4 just isn’t enough and where 1.8 to 2.8 might come in handy. It also depends on what the distance is to your subject. If you’re closer to your subject you’ll get a shallower depth of field than shooting from a distance. And there are also lenses that are razor sharp from wide open to stopped down.
Very good Model
Thanks for watching! Skyler is the 💣
Would you buy this lense or the sigma 1818-35mm f/1.8 for photography and film?
The Drawing sensei we have both and they’re both great. I think for portraits, video interviews, and more general use the 24-105 is a little more versatile especially because it has image stabilization. If you’re using it for film as well that makes a huge difference for being able to hand hold. But if you are doing more low light type shooting and don’t need the reach of the 105mm then the Sigma 18-35 with its 1.8 aperture is a great option too.
Thank u bro
Thanks for watching!
I wish you did some natural lighting shots without the external flash.
You don’t use flash?
@@FilmJams Maybe the flash power is too strong but imo it separates the person from the background too much. I prefer going without it
Kravence there’s a mixture of both “with flash” and “without flash” in this video.
Of course it is
Of course is it….what?

Vinay Ridlan thanks! Appreciate it!
U think i could get the same results with a canon T7 using this lens
Thanks for watching! I think you could get similar results but keep in mind the T7 is an APS-C sensor so will have a crop factor and your photos won’t be quite as wide. But if you’re looking for tighter portraits, the 24-105mm will work quite well!
No
No because there's a shallow depth of field cuz you have to time the aperture by 1.6 this comes out in Lafayette and about F6

A bit lost here, why EF lens when EOS R (often purchased as a kit) is compatible with cheaper and faster RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens?
I'm getting the R myself soon so it would be cool to see which lens work great or not on the system.

u never use 24? only 50 up?
I use the full range. For portraits more in the 50-105mm range to get shallow depth. For landscapes or architecture more in the 24-35mm range.
@@FilmJams your title shooting portrait 24-105 i thought you will use 24mm for portrait too, at least use it all range
Do you think it’s gonna work well using a canon eos rp? I tried with other Len outdoor and the quality it’s so bad.
Andres Rodriguez Niño sure it will work on an RP. I’ve used on my old 7D and even worked great on that.
Awesome lens. Fact!
Tis true! Thanks for watching! :)
Why do you buy an RF camera? If you then use EF it is a setback
But tony northrop said professionals don't use EOS r???
@@WhisperWorksGaming my comment was sarcastic.... plenty of pros use eosr. single card slot in not an issue ay all...
2300 bucks for a flash... holy balls!
Ballz of the Holy Ones indeed! Expensive, but so versatile. One of the best investments I've made in kit in a long time.
哈哈,我为什么拍不出这么漂亮的照片。
Sorry! Is there an English translation for that?

Thanks Antonino! Appreciate you commenting 😆👍🎥⚡️ hello to Italy!
Walk around with all the flashes and assistance??? You should have tested only u and the model .
I love the 24-105. use it for everything. but I love the model 1000 times more :) she is flaming HOT!! who is she? Is she married?
Thanks for watching! I’m not sure it’s been a while!
This music, man. I think I got cancer.
