    My favorite sushi fact is that salmon sushi was introduced to Japan from Norway. Norway was trying to increase the amount of salmon it sold to Japan, so they had to convince the Japanese public that salmon could be eaten raw (it was usually eaten cooked), and it's become one of the more popular fishes for sushi.

      Pacific salmon often has parasites more than Atlantic salmon, so no wonder they were opposed it

    • @MrSeanomon
      @MrSeanomon 9 месяцев назад +32

      I didn’t know that, but I have a counter fact.
      Because salmon sushi was introduced to Japan relatively recently, older people don’t generally eat it so much. As a result, preferring salmon to say… tuna, is sometimes seen as childish.
      Speaking personally, when I was invited to a Michelin star sushi restaurant, my wife (Japanese) asked me not to embarrass myself by ordering salmon.

    • @comradetiedanski6038
      @comradetiedanski6038 9 месяцев назад +13

      @@MrSeanomon old people don't eat salmon raw because japanese salmon have a huge chance of parasites in them as they live in river and streams as well as the sea (I doubt they care if it's from the altantic sea or not), tuna is fine as it lives in the sea throughout all it's life but japanese salmon don't as it can traverse between both eco-systems. It's understandable for them to not eat raw salmon as they were probably taught not to eat fish raw that got caught in the river.

    • @thecatladytm7172
      @thecatladytm7172 8 месяцев назад

      @comradetiedanski6038 yeah all salmon can get those parasites. Fun fact, most of the salmon in the world has them! But usually they are already dead or killed in the process of cooking. Which. Obviously doesnt happen with sushi. So dont buy "fishy" sushi or you might have a friend or two burrowing in your guts and feeding on your intestines!

    “Remember to be careful of who you make fun of, because the weird smelly kid of today might just be the next big thing of tomorrow.”
    Not only is that a clever metaphor for sushi, but it also looks like Sam was making a statement about himself and his RUclips success!

    I like to believe that Sam has been making videos for the duration of his absence, and he just forgets to hit post.

    The original sushi you were describing in the beginning is still made in Japan but is more rare to find. It is called funazushi and if somebody offers you to come eat it, you have to. (It's somewhat sacred)

    I am from the very prefecture where still makes Funa-zushi (鮒寿司 the first preserved fish in fermented rice mentioned here). My grandmother used to buy a barrel every year to give some to each family members. You scrape the rice to discard (though my late Grandpa liked to eat some), slice the fish. The smelly part is true, it is a part of it. You grow with it, you get to use to it. Many Japanese don't like it, the smell and the taste, but some who had never had it till later in their lives, like my American husband, come to love it. Nowadays Funa-zushi has become very expensive. I miss it (Especially its eggs).

      So I’d like to think I’m pretty open to trying different foods, however I have never had anything like that before. Is there anyway you could describe the taste to me in a way I could understand?

      @@all_out_tripp7220 The closest thing would be a very smelly cheese with not-so-soft texture. And, of course, it is fishy.

    What might surprise you is the fact that one of the most popular forms of sushi served in Japan nowadays was actually not created in Japan at all. The salmon used in sushi dishes in Japan is actually a product of a massively successful Norwegian marketing campaign in the late 20th century.
