I own both. I really don't think you can go wrong with either. I give the Shield a very slight edge in accuracy and felt recoil but the XDs is really pretty impressive in both departments for such a slim pistol. I carry appendix so the grip safety on the XDs is can be released during re-holstering.

@@ToddCotta FYI Hogue Grips makes a fantastic rubber grip for the M&P Shield series pistols!!! I recently added a Hogue grip to my Shield due to the stippling handle rubbing my side while carrying in my holster. I must say the Hogue grip has really helped with a lot with better recoil & better pistol control. Thanks God Bless!!

Our 9mm shield has over 30,000 rounds through it at our indoor range. It has been the hardest working gun in our case and it only had one problem that SW immediately fixed.

I bought a Shield 40 first, very challenging for me to shoot, so I like to warm up with it at the range, then I just recently bought a Shield 9, which I then shot after shooting the 40, and it is so easy to handle, and carry.

My only beef with the XDS or the XD series in general is that is has ambidextrous mag releases one on both sides…which would seem convenient for left handed shooters..but ever since I had a mishap with my IWB holster hitting my mag release and spitting out my magazine loaded with ammo..I almost want a mag release to where you literally have to turn the gun sideways and press directly into the frame of the gun to engage the mag release

I think the light strikes could be attributed with how she held it. when I had a new xds I had the same issue and I realized (after about an hour) that my thumb hold was causing me to push the slide release up so it was hanging up the slide so it wasn't completely going into battery. I fixed this by bringing my strong hand thumb farther out and off the slide release.

OK. Nice vid. & good reviews. ONE BIG GRIPE - Introducing the guns, the XD was on my RIGHT (your LEFT). AFTER SHOOTING, their POSITIONS were REVERSED. On my notebook screen, I could not tell which was which, and found the post-shoot review CONFUSING first time, then had to go back and see/hear it AGAIN, once I knew WHICH gun had the High viz sight, WHICH had light strikes, which grip Marni liked better, etc. SUGGESTION: Please don't swap the pistol positions with NO warning. The guns are NOT life-size in front of the VIEWER, as they are for YOU, the RE-VIEWER. (On FULL SCREEN, the guns are 1/2 missing out the screen bottom....) Appreciate Marnie's enthusiasm. & Todd's steadiness as usual. Thanks to both! All the best.

I know I'm way late to this video, but it seemed clear why she had a problem with the one 45. With her small hands and less strength, the pistol recoil was too much for her grip and control. So it acted like a limp wrist error, not allowing it to fully run the slide and it jammed. She pulled the trigger on it once, causing the light strike, luckily it didn't set it off. The next time it happened, she saw it happen and cleared it.
So totally not her fault, nor the gun or ammo's fault. It was just a bigger grip with less grip texture, where the S&W has a smaller grip with excellent sandpaper like texture.
Anyway thanks for the video, I appreciate the comparison.
    Great shooting you two. 😎👍

I own and as part of my EDC rotation regularly carry an Springfield XDs .45 acp. Of all my carry guns the XDs is the only striker fired polymer pistol. Of the 4 I regularly carry, a Kimber Ultra carry 2 in 45 acp, a Kimber Ultra carry 2 in 9mm, a Sig Sauer P938 SAS in 9mm and the XDs mod 2 45 acp the XDs is the only one I don't totally trust. It seems to me that Springfield is pushing the limit with regards to 45 acp and it seems to be trying to tear itself apart at times. Plus I'm an old school hammer fired 1911 SAO guy, and although the XDs is SAO it seems a little light to be firing 45 acp. JMHO... The XDs is the first and last striker fired polymer pistol I will ever own.

The M&P is thin and feels great in the hand, looks amazing. I think I'm going for the shield, held both in my hands today, along side with the Glock 30SF. I have a shield .45. One note about the range. I rarely do the take 20 seconds to get sights on bullseye etc. I try to mimic street situations.
In the streets you won’t be able to take the the time to make sure you look through your sights, adjust, move a tad to the left, etc.
instead I unholster and let my bullets spray as I would in a real-life situation. Perhaps some people go to the range just for “sporting” and try to get a high score etc. For me it’s about being reality to life and practicing for that.

Yeah, me too... My accuracy test is to get all rounds into a torso sized target at 50 feet. Why 50? it's the distance from my front door to the edge of my property in all directions and 60 feet from the back door to my external garage/shop. With an armed intruder inside my house at say 10-20 feet, a 1-inch group doesn't matter.

Everybody to there on thing, but I wouldn't trade my xds for the m & p. I own several guns made by both, for 1 you guys think it's a big advantage the m & p has a smaller grip. In a compact 45, control? I don't think so. The big thing with me on these to products speaking in terms of all caliber guns being compared not just these 45s, is with Springfield my gun has quality upgrade features right out of the box. With a m & p the second you get it out a the box you have to calculate what upgrades you have to do because you got generic after Market features. That even showed up in this video, comment made: well we need to spend $125 to get better sights on the shield. Where as the xds already has great sights. BOTTOM line is this: I shouldn't have to spend a fortune on any firearm, just to turn around and have to buy practically half the gun interchanges to get a quality firearm.

I have the xds and its has never had a weak strike but a womans wrist is weaker so not as much resistance to recoil against. I think the shield is a better womans gun or limp wristed guy for that matter, but a tight grip makes a better shot so the xds lends itself to better marksmanship simply by a design flaw.

Where are you coming up with the Smith & Wesson Shield cost more in the XDS you buy the shield 45 for $340 all day long you sure can't buy an XDS for that price

We talk about the retail pricing not the big mega gun store or online store cut throat pricing.

The M&P weight you listed is with out magazine, and the XD weight you gave is with magazine. So you did apples to oranges. The truth is when both have magazines in the M&P is heavier.

Actually I do not receive any compensation from Smith & Wesson or any gun company for the reviews I do. We try and take an objective look at each gun on their own Merit and then compare them. It's just that newer guns meet the needs of the modern shooter better than guns that are 8 years old. My next review is going to be the new M&P mod 2 Pistols. It appears they've raised the bar again but I'm sure I will upset people because it's not a Glock or it's not whatever their favorite gun might be. So thank you for watching and just know that we don't take money, guns or any promo items, although it would be nice, from gun manufacturers.

Have an Ultra Carry II that I will put up against either of these as far as shooting. I like the thin profile of the XD-s though over my bulkier Kimber.
