- Did you know that Rusty Hamer was only 42 years old when he passed away and that fellow former child star Paul Peter Petersen of The Donna Reed Show started up a foundation in his honor after his death? Rusty Hamer rose to prominence as a child star on Make Room for Daddy, which was a sitcom that came on the air in 1953. Despite the success that Rusty found on the show at a young age, he went on to lead a miserable adult life afterward.

Rusty Hamer was only six years old when Make Room for Daddy came on the air, and he was 17 years old when the show ended. This means that Rusty spent his entire childhood on the set of the show. For his education, Danny attended a studio classroom with one other child. Upon Make Room for Daddy’s end, Rusty wanted to see what it was like to go to a real school. He subsequently enrolled in a Los Angeles high school, but couldn’t fit in as a result of his strange upbringing. Rusty found that he had no place in the real world, and he also no longer was welcome in the entertainment industry. His career had dried up by the time that he had come of age, and there was nothing left for him.
Rusty tried desperately to find his way in life despite the handicap of his strange upbringing, but could never quite figure out the real world. Join Facts Verse as Rusty Hamer’s life only got worse after Make Room for Daddy.

I really admire Paul Peterson for educating the public on stage parents, who push their children into an ynstable world.
Us too! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great weekend 😊
Yes, Paul is a true hero
I remember seeing Paul Peterson and Jay North on ( I think it was ) Phil Donahue and Jay talking about the abuse he endured on the set of Dennis the Menace. I could never watch that show again, I always change the channel.
Very sad. He was full of fun in his interaction with Danny. Hope you’re all together in heaven, Rusty.
Couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing your views on this. May Rusty find peace 😥
???
Great story on Rusty Hamer's life. I still watch "Make Room For Daddy" on and off depending on what channel is showing it. I have always been a huge Abbott & Costello fan and finally found "Dance With Me Henry" in which Rusty had a good role in the movie. I didn't know his life ended by suicide...it's always tough to hear that about someone you liked and sort of grew up with.
Poor Rusty! Parents often put the onus of supporting the family on the backs of kids is heinous. They really should make sure those kids go off to college or trade school so they can become something more than their child star days. After all, Angela Cartwright became established as a photographer.
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. May Rusty find peace 🙏
It's so sad when a child star that has everything to live for has to take there own life, that just does not seem right at all.....💔
We absolutely agree! Thank you for your watching our video. Be on the lookout for the next one!
That's the thing he felt had nothing to live for what he really wanted to live for was to transition into adult acting which was unfortunately a failure.
Very sad indeed. Poor guy.
Many child stars go on to suffer after their brief success during childhood…. hardly seems worth it. Look at Anissa Jones from Family Affair.
But my favorite Danny Thomas episodes were when Uncle Tanoose was on!
Anissa Jones never had a chance to live her life. She died of a drug overdose at age 18. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
We vividly remember that episodee too! Thank you for bringing back memories. What other types of video would you like to see?
The Danny Thomas Show actors had great chemistry together..All had spunk , charisma and charm... Episodes dealing with bullying were Memorable.. thank you FV.
We absolutely agree! Thank you for your watching our video. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
Rusty Hamer got some of the best lines that any child TV star has ever gotten. He knew how to throw 'em out, and toss 'em back. If he couldn't be in front of the camera, too bad he didn't get behind the camera. Definitely underrated. He could had been the Al Bundy in 'Married with Children'.
I loved all episodes of The Danny Thomas Show. Rusty Hamer was one year young than I , and I found him to be very entertaining. The one episode thats ticks in my mind was a discussion that took place between Danny Thomas and a young Rusty, who was arguing with his "father" about the grandeur of the American Patriots who fought in the war of independence, and made reference to The Boston Tea Party. Coming in late to this discussion was his "mother" who asked Danny what all the fuss was about. Danny's response was: "Oh he is complaining about a Tea Party in Boston that he wasn't invited to." I cannot remember the name of that episode as it was back in about 1962. May Almighty God grant your dear soul Rusty, ETERNAL REST, and may HIS Perpetual Light shine upon thee. Can you kindly advise if the DVD set is available for the Danny Thomas Show. Thank you kindly.
We're happy to know that you love the show! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?

@@ianhamer528 Thank you for this information Ian 😄
It was Season 6, Episode 18 on the Danny Thomas Show
A great video. I learned a lot. It's so sad he had such a tragic life after being a child star. We see this too often, sadly. 🙏❤️🕊️
Wasn't that tragic he was eating good had a cool Hollywood career and regular life afterwards
I got a kick out of the nickname he kept calling little sister Linda "the little termite!" A sign of a TV watching generation to imply she was a household pest! Haha! Eventually Danny Williams chewed him out for it and Angela Cartwright's portrayal of being really mad at him was priceless!
I always wondered why Danny didn't do anything to really help Rusty develope a career for himself in Hollywood. He surely had enough credit to his name to do it. Rusty was a hell of a lot more talented than other forgotten child Stars like Rickey Shroeder, that nobody remembers.
Both Hamer and Cartwright were adorable kids.
@@marcstevens8576 I once saw Danny Thomas and Hamer on a TV reunion show and kind of wondered the same thing when he was describing his difficult life at the time! Thomas looked sympathetic but I guess we'll never know what happened after that.
@@jons.6216 Thanks, as it really puzzles me. Never got to that reunion show, I'll look it up...
Rusty Hamer was a great actor. So sad to hear what happened to him!
That kid was a good actor for his age. Very talented.
We absolutely agree! Thank you for your watching our video. Be on the lookout for the next one!
So true
Very nice story. So sad that he had to do that! But the show was great!
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
The boy that played on the Partridge Family just said he moved on and got a Job as a waiter and figured that's life. But back pain is so bad it could make you do that. When I was 14 me and my friends were riding are bikes down the steep hills in the country and I hurt my back and it took a month to get better. Believe me that is horrible pain and I can understand why he would do that
So sad, he was such a terrific talent, I love watching him on the Danny Thomas show! He had so much personality!
Minor Consideration also came after the losses of child stars Trent Lehman and Tim Hovey.
Paul discussed the creation of it with my father after Uncle Rusty passed. He has helped so many since then.
Rusty...love you on the show the industry then was yes brutal and not very carring... wish child stars got and will get better treatment all our prayers..🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Parents, don’t put your kids in show biz. It rarely ends well.
Tim, at last, a factual and well-researched video!!! I was very pleased with how you presented Rusty Hamer's life. Did you know his name was mentioned in the first few minutes of "Being the Ricardos" (2022) by Vivian Vance?
Thanks for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed this video. What other types of video would you like to see?
Soo many wrong "facts". And yes he was mentioned in 2 scene's in the first 10 minutes of the film.
Great Interesting Video about Rusty Hamer.

I live and walk in Hollywood. I prefer not to support the gasoline lifestyle. I have walked past hundreds of stars with names thousands of times. About a block east of Vine is Rusty Hamer's star and everytime I walked past that star I would say "who the heck is Rusty Hamer" and here we are. I went to Pali High two years after Rusty graduated. Jim Morrison would do one semester at Pali High in Rusty's senior year. You can't make this stuff up. I've seen the yearbook with Jim's photo and very short hair. 65 or so.
Did you see the photo of Rusty in the yearbook, too?
@@aces.9738 - no, I didn't. I wouldn't even hear the name consciously until the 2000s. I saw that yearbook in 1968 because Steve Hansen's older sister remembered Jim Morrison from her senior year.
@@dennismason3740 It would've been fun to see Rusty's senior picture.
@@aces.9738 - for some. I couldn't watch Daddy, it seemed fake. You should see my grad yearbook. Katey Segal, for example.
I met him once. He was very nice.

@Factsverse-I'll be watching! Also, a small FYI. I saw an interview or maybe a Q&A with Ken Osmond who said Paul Peterson once told him the only reason he was a child actor was because his Mother was bigger than him!
Not a bad video. Lots of incorrect info from his childhood and his parents involvement in acting but it's ok, everyone uses the same wrong info to make their videos. Was nice to see Uncle Rusty in some color shots when he was older. I only have memories of him in his late 20s - 30s until his death. Wedidn't get along very well but we lived each other alot. 2 alike I guess. I run a FB page for him and occasionally post videos about him on my RUclips channel. Feel free to drop by. And TY always to my good friend Paul Peterson for all his hard work to help children in the industry.
I remember him in an episode of the Joey Bishop show
So, he’s a child of a mixed race marriage? Why show that couple?
I agree, that made no sense at all.
No Grandpa Hamer was of English decent and Grandma Dorothy was from Malta.
So sad😞
How sad
Indeed, may Rusty find peace 💕
It's deridder Louisiana not deriddler
gotta get that biracial couple in there huh
no escaping it sadly
The same fate befell many child stars from that era. Hollywood would use them up an
This is really sad. Smh
One small correction. "Ft Ti" was not a Western. It took place at Fort Ticonderoga in New York, and was set during the French and Indian Wars.
Thank you for pointing this out! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
And it was Uncle Rusty AND his older brother John (my father) who she l were the children that were kidnapped and rescued by Jed and the Rangers.
This youngster so talented and fun to watch. Surely Hollywood could have work for Rusty, you would think. Awful industry.
@0:40, you portray them as Rusty's parents??? Care to answer why? I'm sure the real photo was available but you chose.......
Actually, we have never released photos of Grandma Dorothy with Grandpa Hamer. So easy to say why he didn't use one.
@@ianhamer528 It's not so much that the real photos weren't available as much as these You Tubers use of "stock" photos that fill their segments that have no connection to anything in the story.
The episode I enjoy the most is when the kids are extremely mannerly at the breakfast table. Supposed to the first Danny Thomas spit-take.
It is DERIDDER NOT DERIDDLER
Those bogus little pieces inserted to illustrate some point are so lame and out of place. Stick to actual content.

My most memorable episode was about Walnuts 👍😂
I had no idea he had taken his life. Please seek help if anyone has that in mind.
Speaking of Make Room for Daddy did you do one of these on Sherry Jackson who as I remember best as a sexy Android on an episode of Star trek?
The episode was called, what are little girls made of? Sherry Jackson wore a skimpy costume in the episode. From Ms. Harper Stacey.

@@skye.325 the episode also featured Ted Cassidy who played lurch on the Addams family. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Him as well as his siblings being forced into it is unfounded.
Well. Thank God they WEREN'T. My father John acted some because he liked the girls. My Uncle Arthur did pyrotechnics because hey lined to blow stuff up.

Sorry to say never seen "Make Room for Daddy.". Sorry to hear about Rusty committing suicide at such a young age such ashame when that happens. Have a great day everyone
David, you must be younger than 50. "Make Room for Daddy/"The Danny Thomas Show" was the 4th-longest lasting series on television and the linchpin for the other Danny Thomas-produced series ("I Spy", "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "Gomer Pyle, USMC", "The Andy Griffith Show", "Mayberry RFD").
No worries! Have a great weekend ❣
The city's name is pronounced " DeRidder! "
Correct. There's no "L" and he says it three times so there's no mistake. I'm beginning to think he throws in very sloppy mistakes to see who will notice. It's not like you can't take 30 seconds on Google to find the correct spelling and pronunciation. Oh well, beats the vid I saw today that spelled "sincere" S-E-N-S-E-R-E
That was kinda funny. And the Cafe he worked at was my father's restaurant the Richlighter! He liked to cook and hang out with us.
so CBS was the second or first network that Danny's show was on?
It was the second
It is pronounced de ridder
With so many shows (not necessarily sitcoms) in the 1960's, it's hard to understand why he couldn't get jobs. Didn't he have an agent? In that Green Acres clip he kind of reminded me of the guys on My Three Sons.
it was a great show.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
His life wasn't that bad he had a cool Hollywood career and a normal life afterwards
5:00- why did you mention his "passing away' so passively?
The poor guy struggled for many years to make it in the world but after failing so many times he just couldn't take REJECTION anymore and he ended his ien life. When mentioning such a tragedy please don't do so in such a passively manner and so matter-of-fwctly trying to cram tge entire sentence into ine breath. Rusty wasn't the only one to do this. In more recent uears, Sawyer Sweetin from "Everybody Loves Raymond" had the sane problem and met tge sane fate.
Robin Williams and Brian Keith also ended their lives after suffering a horrible illness.
Suicide isn't painles. Everybody who dies it did so BECAUSE of some pain or another.
Slow Dien your speech and twke life moor seriously abd show at least a little bit of compassion when talking about tragedies, please.
Wasn't the show in the 50s called the Danny Thomas show?

This was sad to hear about Russell life after the show I can how kid are just chest pons to the producers and how fast there discard them when there no longer cute kid
...but why Rusty?
I don't recommend the entertainment industry for kids That's coming from a person that wanted to be famous as a kid But now I would rather Let my writing help people Then be well knowing around the world
There were child stars who did make a success in their adult lives, in the entertainment industry. Ron Howard may be the most notable example.

@@danielcobbins9050 You are correct about some child stars making it, but let's face it...for every Ron Howard there are 1000 Jay Norths.
This was a show that I always watched as a kid. But I couldn’t stand the way that he talked to his father, in fact I hated it. I liked Danny Thomas and I had a crush on Sherry. As for the suicide of Rusty during his adult life, sad.
Danny liked Uncle Rusty being smart to him. He thought it made the character funnier.
Rusty was my dads uncle unfortunately I never got to know him since he died before I was born.
His older brother (my grandfather) John hamer passed last year. And thank you for pronouncing the name Hamer correctly 😂😂

Hi hey likeit
Despite the presentation, I think there's a LOT we don't know...for example, why didn't Danny Thomas and those associated with the show that ran for what 11 yrs (?) comes to Rusty needs, maybe they did, n we don't know.....seems like a lot more could've been done to help this guy in our 'meism' society.....we're really not edu. to help our fellow man in America, which is shame to our culture.........
Danny helped many times. Uncle Rusty was just in a bad place.
The show outlived its usefulness; at least fir Rusty. He should have left the show as Sherry did. She should have left earlier and the show should have been canceled after the Jean Hagan was no more.
