  • Painful Final Day of Rusty Hamer, Rusty Williams The Danny Thomas Show.
Rusty Hamer was an American child actor, best known for his role as Rusty Williams on the popular television show "Make Room for Daddy". Born on February 15, 1947, in Tenafly, New Jersey, Hamer began his acting career at the age of 5, appearing in television commercials and on stage. He landed his breakthrough role on "Make Room for Daddy" in 1953, where he played the son of Danny Thomas' character. Hamer continued to act in television and film roles throughout his childhood and teenage years, but his career began to decline in the late 1960s. Tragically, Hamer struggled with depression and alcoholism as an adult, and he died by suicide on January 18, 1990, at the age of 42.

He was delightful on Danny Thomas’s shows. It saddened me to learn of his death. He brought so much joy to the millions who followed his career.

I watch him every morning on the Danny Thomas Show. His timing was outstanding and he could hold his own against Thomas.

It's hard to upstage Danny Thomas but he did it in such a natural and unrehersed way. I love watching MRFD & The Danny Thomas Show because of how the adult and the child played off of each other comedically.

Make Room For Daddy ran from 1953 to 1957 on ABC. It then ran under the title of The Danny Thomas Show on CBS from 1957 until 1964. Rusty appeared on the series throughout its run for all eleven seasons; not just six seasons as mentioned in this video.

Rusty Hamer's suicide- the genesis of "A Minor Affair", actor Paul Peterson's organization to help former child actors overcome show biz misuse and disownment. He did leave a positive legacy after all.

I can't understand why Danny Thomas didn't help him in the business he had no problem helping his own children.

Well in defense of Danny Thomas he went on to found St. Jude's hospital for children. He devoted his life to helping children especially those suffering from childhood cancers.

@@jessicabailey6792 No one's judging Danny Thomas. The creation of St. Jude is a separate thing. It still doesn't answer the question of why or if Danny Thomas tried to help Rusty get roles. Nor does it diminish the fact that Thomas certainly did get jobs/roles for his own children.

Danny Thomas told him if you go to college I will pay for all four years, and rusty foolishly turned Thomas down.

I didn't know that's how he died. That is so sad, like the tragic death of Anissa Jones.

I am old enough to remember this show. In my opinion Rusty had more talent than Danny Thomas. It's a tragedy he was forgotten by Hollywood -their failure to carry the ball. Am also sympathetic that he made the decision to exit the acting machine but the lure of money can make the wisest of the world jump into the fire regardless the pain after.

There was a show years ago about child stars and what happened to them. It was brought out that, due to this particular show and talking about Rusty, that this was the immediate cause of his suicide.
