What made Johnny Whitaker stand out was that he had incredible range compared to many of his contemporaries. He was able to tackle comedic roles in Family Affair and in the feature film, The Russians Are Coming The Russians Are Coming! But he also managed to play serious dramatic roles in shows such as Bonanza and Gunsmoke.
Even after Family Affair came to an end, he continued to work regularly in both film and television during his early teens. He decided, however, to take a break as he grew older. As part of his Mormon faith, he emigrated to Portugal for 2 years on a mission trip. He later studied at Brigham Young University.
And then, it all came crashing down. In the 1980s, Johnny Whitaker lost 8 years of his life. His wife left him and he fell into a serious depression. He also began abusing drugs and alcohol.
This slowed him down and took control of his life. He took a very long hiatus from show business and largely faded away from the public eye. Like many other child stars, it seemed that Johnny Whitaker was on the same downward spiral that many of his contemporaries experienced.
So how did Johnny Whitaker make his comeback? How did he manage to kick his addictions? He’s now back at work in show business and has been working regularly at TV - currently acting in an upcoming TV series which we’ll hopefully see later this year!

I was born 1956. Yes I watched Family affair growing up. My favorite episode that I remember was when Mr French, Jody and Buffy was stranded in a hurricane in Puerto Rico. All Mr French had was an apple and a chocolate bar. He managed to make a gourmet made meal out of it for the twins and he went hungry.

Two of the cutest kids ever to grace a TV screen. I'm glad that drugs weren't able to destroy both of them. The death of Anissa Jones was tragic and was VERY sad for me, when I heard about it in 1976. I loved the show as a kid, and I'm still a fan. I'm SO glad that Johnny is doing well, and so glad to see that he used his experience in the dark times to help others.

Unfortunatly, this TV show brings back some sad memories for me. I was 13 at the time and living with my Grandmother in Newcastle Australia, it was July 1969 and she had been ill over the past week spending most of the time in her bed. Family Affair aired on NBN Channel 3 at 7:30pm on Friday evening, I had settled onto the sofa to watch and out of her bedroom came my Grandma looking a lot better. She sat in her rocker chair and said "Oh, Family Affair, I love this show..." within a few minutes she had what I thought were spasms and I called out to my dad, who also lived with us and he carried her back to her bed where she passed away. I was told the next day it was a heart attack. She was 69yo. I was the last to speak to her during one of her favourite shows. Funny that this pops up in July in my RUclips feed...

I know he went through some difficult years with the drinking and drugs but it sounds like he had a better foundation compared to a lot of childhood actors. In any case, he was smart enough to listen to the people that were giving him an intervention. (could very well have been his family). He turned that dark part of his life into something positive and I'm glad to see that he is doing very well. 🙂 Still working🙂

Cute epi, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that it triggered me. My parents never equated punishment as their way of showing their love for me. If anything, it was to the contrary. Incurring their wrath, being yelled at, and getting whipped with a belt (and then later a switch after I grew older), I never once equated any of it with love. Amazing how times have changed because nowadays, parents would get locked up for inflicting corporal punishment. Glad I survived mine and that those days are long gone.

I love Johnny Whitaker I'm saying him now in his sixties and listening to what he's overcome and the wonderful things and he's doing with respect to the 12-step program and helping people overcome addiction that just makes him more of an angel in my eyes and I think it's wonderful he's a wonderful human being and I have nothing but respect for him. We grew up practically neighbors hearing that he was from Van Nuys because I was raised in Studio City which is just a hop skip and a jump away from where he was brought up. Being involved in the 12-step program myself N.A. I heard about him before and what he was doing with regard to that and I think it's wonderful the way he's giving back and helping people. I'm so uplifted since I saw this video. I still watch Family Affair all the time

I was a big fan of the Show
Family Affair. It was a good
    Wholesome show about a
    Bachelor who became an over
    Night Parent to his Brothers
    Children. Buffy and Jody were
So cute as the twins, and Cissy
Was their teenaged sister. It had real charm in the show and a very Handsome Uncle Bill
Played by Brian Keith. I also
    Loved Sebastian Cabot as
Mr. French who took care of the
Children when Uncle Bill was away on Business Trips. It's
Sad to know that Anissa who
Played Buffy Davis took her own
Life at aged 18. We will always
    Have the Reruns of
Family Affair to take us back
To a simpler time in America
    When Families had Values and
    Children were disciplined with
    Love.

You made one little mistake in the video. In 1971, Johnny was really eleven, not twelve. It was only in about the last two weeks of 1971 that he would have turned twelve and that makes a huge difference in his marketability as a child actor.
My most memorable episode of Family Affair is the one where Eve Plumb who would later go on to play Jan Brady in The Brady Bunch plays a child dying of cancer. It doesn't have a happy ending. People tend to think Family Affair didn't touch serious topics, but it did. I have to say that my favorite character on the show was Mr. French played by Sebastian Cabot.

Did you ever notice the TV characters who did not have children? Columbo?
Mr. French, as well as Uncle Bill. Or anyone from Gunsmoke, say Festus
Haggen. They would have made excellent fathers. They all had incredible
patience, and had good rapport with kids. There were a few good episodes
      missing from that fact.
