- Did you know that Lauren Chapin did drugs with Elvis Presley and slept with one of his friends and that the former child star became a prostitute during the darkest years of her life? Lauren Chapin didn’t want to be a star but was pushed into show business by her alcoholic mother. Or, more accurately, Lauren’s mother pushed her older brother into show business and the producers simply took more of an interest in the boy’s sister. While Billy Chapin would appear in the cult classic film The Night of the Hunter during his childhood, his younger sister would receive a star-making role in one of the 1950s ’ biggest sitcoms. That sitcom, of course, was Father Knows Best, and the role that Lauren received was one of the most popular in the whole show.

On Father Knows Best, Lauren Chapin played the character of Kathy “Kitten” Anderson. Kitten was the youngest member of the family that the show revolved around, and she became one of the audience’s favorite parts of the series early on. Despite the fact that the audience loved Kitten, Lauren found herself having a hard time finding work after the series, which had launched in 1954, came to an end in 1960. She would end up hitting rock bottom when she became a prostitute to fuel her rampant addiction to illicit substances.

The most shocking part to me is you neglected to mention that Elenor Donahue was a married lady when she became pregnant. Billy Gray sued Lenoard Maltin (and won) over his portrait of Gray as a "drug crazed teen". Makes me wonder how much more of your "Facts" are sensationalized.
Can't tell it by today, but people got married back then. Gray made headlines when he said he hated the show because it wasn't real life. He said it was fake. What he couldn't realize was that people wanted to see something better than their real lives.

The takeaway from this cautionary tale, is that with the Lord anything is possible. His redeeming love and light, drive away all darkness.

Ironically, the cast of The Donna Reed Show were all close & remained so long after the series ended. The four met once a month for lunch, until the passing of the 'father', Carl Betz. After an interval of mourning, the three remaining friends got in touch & agreed that he would have wanted them to go on. They did so, even after Donna Reed died. Today, Paul Petersen & Shelley Fabares consider themselves to really be brother & sister, & those lunches continue! 👦🏻👩🏼🙎♂️🙎🏻♀️

Paul Petersen started an organization to help kid actors. He has devoted his whole life to it. The most famous kid actor to have a hard time was Jay North. He went nuts for a time. Unlike other tv family shows where all the family carried the show, North carried the whole show on his shoulders, and it drove him buggy.

I find the story enormously touching. If only all the television 'families' could have been like that. Spencer Tracy & Elizabeth Taylor played father & daughter in Father of the Bride, & they bonded so well that she called him 'Pops' (her name for him in the film) for the rest of his life. And Mary Badham, who played Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, remained friends with Gregory Peck, her screen father, for the rest of his life. She had no father in real life, & she says that it would have been impossible for her to call him Mr. Peck, because she had known him so long; but she also couldn't call him Greg, because he had been like a father to her since her childhood. So she just called him Atticus, as she did in the movie. ❤

This doesn't surprise me. Years ago, I read an article where Lauren opened up and talked about her nightmarish life as a child star and young adult. I'm glad she's happy and okay now. Sadly, you can probably find many tragic, heartbreaking stories of child stars similar to Lauren's. The blame completely falls on the parents. Good upbringing is so important.

Hollywood thrives on--even recruits--kids that come from abusive homes. And then they further mess the kids up. Macaulay Culkin talked about being abt 10 yrs old and a producer/director/studio bigwig called him in to see him. Dude had a crackpipe laying on his crotch, making suggestions to Mac what he should do, sexually. A ten yr old child. These ppl are sick and twisted. It is called HOLLYWOOD for a reason: this self-styled magical place was named for the Holly that magic wands are made from. It has ALWAYS been a foul place where dirty deeds are done without conscience and there are "fixers" to make sure nothing impedes evil from being thinly veiled as entertainment.
That is why they made the Jackie Coogan Law.... to protect children in the entertainment business......

Sadly the most shocking part of this story is no longer shocking. Overbearing parents using their children as pawns to line their pockets with money earned by their kids. I didn't know about the sexual abuse. That will destroy your soul, but glad she survived it.
Always the case with child actors, the parents rip their kids off, there are many cases of that as the law allows the parent power of attorney over them

@@ROCKIN-AL I am not agreeing with stealing from your child, but I can see how it might happen. I would imagine it would be difficult to hold down a regular job while taking your kids to their acting jobs and auditions. Plus, if the parents are struggling financially that would be an odd dynamic to raise a child television star in. They probably dipped into the money to support the child and the rest of the family rather than setting up a formal agreement for management fees. I heard one child actor say that once fees and taxes were taken from their paycheck they received a very small percentage of money. If the parent is on set and managing their child’s career and day to day activities they probably should be paid. Part of a parent’s role could be to oversee and manage their child’s finances to ensure that child will have financial stability as an adult.
Just a thought, but speaking of overbearing parents, Michael Jackson's so-called father fits the description of an overbearing father. Although his life ended sadly, at least he told about the abuse in his later years.

Lauren and I have the same childhood. I remember watching Father Knows Best as a little girl and recognizing her nervous, tense, on edge anxiety. Especially the scenes when she had to "act" very upset and crying. I could see the abuse through the acting. Survivors can feel it 😔

I noticed Kristy McNichol's photo, too. I was listening for and was expecting a segueway that would explain the reason for the KM photo, but none was given, so I laughed when I realized they mistook her for Lauren Chapin. Whoops! I'm sure others must have mentioned this gaf before us. I guess it must be too difficult for them to edit the KM photo out of the video. 😂 Definitely a quality control mistake which leads to doubts about the accuracy of these bio's.
I'm shocked, I had no idea she experienced so much trauma in her life. So happy she rose above it all and most importantly found Christ! He is the best healer of all.

I AM TOTALLY AGHAST! Whilst I had no knowledge about Lauren's home life, I am shocked and dismayed to hear the Robert Young, an actor whom I looked up to was a drunkard. I am delighted that Lauren overcame her woes, and turned to GOD; who will set things right in the end. Lauren and I are of the same age. I loved her performance in Father Knows Best; in fact I loved that show and I cannot tell you how deeply distressed I feel that this show and Hollywood are nothing more than an evil scene; the devil's playground. @@FactsVerse Thank you for your kind comments. Cases such as this poor lady eats at the very fabric of my soul. I learned about the horrors of Hollywood many years ago, after reading the sad story of Billy Grey whom I loved in the earlier films. Billy had a wonderful talent as a comedian but his Hollywood lifestyle saw the end of that. This is why I discarded my TV set (I haven't watched TV in over 10 years) I do not go to the cinema (The lest time I went to the pictures was in 2000), and I find places like Hollywood nothing more that a Recruiting Office for Lucifer and his vile angles. I shall offer up my daily Prayers from now on for Lauren and other abused children like her. God Bless!
Everyone has their demons. Robert Young was a person, not some image he portrayed in movies and tv. His personal problems in no way diminishes his acting talent. Love people for who they are, flaws and all.

On January 13th it was Billy's birthday, I was able to share some birthday cake with Billy, Jon Provost, his wife Laurie Jacobson, and Tony Dow. Thank you Laurie for the invite. Great memories!

My word she had it all in her Young Life. And she could not get much help from her Working Family. Jane who played her Mother was the only one without issues. Why could she not go to her for help? I don't think she could have talked to her about that. Those things were never spoken about. What went on behind closed doors wasn't to be shared. I'm a 70s kid and it was still that way, but I know a lot more so in the 50s for sure. I mean in the 80s and 90s even, Nicole Brown Simpson wasn't taken seriously by cops, even with the bruises and him ranting in the background. Sex abuse surely had to be kept hush hush.

The one who played Bud on father knows best wasn't on drugs you make him sound worse than he is. He just said in between shooting he would wonder off and smoke a joint. He's a very nice guy. The only odd thing about 1950s sitcoms is the father seemed old enough that he should have been playing the role of the grandfather rather than the father.
Elinor Donahue was married when she got pregnant during hiatus. Women get pregnant. Lauren got pregnant by twice by a person/persons NOT married to. Need to redo this

I used to watch the show all the time and loved it it is very sad to find out the father(Robert Young) was an alcoholic and to find out all the things that happened to this lovely little girl that I loved so sad but I'm glad that she found the Lord and Regain her life

"Kitten" was her "father's" pet name for her. No one else ever called her that, but called her "Cathy".

This rings of Jay North and the abuses he suffered at the hands of relatives....very sad and tragic....
His problem was that he carried the whole show. Unlike other family shows where all members star, dennis couldn't be replaced. That's a lot of pressure on a kid. No wonder he went nutzo for awhile.
I met Lauren when she spoke at a church in Orange County CA in the early 90’s. She shared her testimony always smiling sharing how God transformed her life how she accepted Christ and forgave her mother and mended her relationship with her brother. After services I purchased her book “Father Does know best” referring to God of course❤️She was such a sweet down to earth lady and greeted everyone warmly! So glad she is still doing well!

Praise the lord Jesus Lauren is a born from above believer. Reminds me of Todd Bridges who also came to faith out of a life of drugs and is the lone living survivor of the cast of Different Strokes!
Whenever I watched “Father Knows Best”. I had a very uneasy feeling and Lauren seem to me in my spirit that she was super sad and something wasn’t right, but I was a kid I didn’t understand what that could be. I’m so glad she’s a Christian and she knows Jesus and that is so great! I think I might’ve picked up on some of it because I experienced a lot of hard Times growing up and it was really difficult.
I read Lauren's biography and her parents were awful people. Considering what she went through in her youth it's remarkable that she survived it. I wish the best for her.

I think her acting skills were underrated. She seemed so genuine on _Father Knows Best_ , like girls I went to school with in the early 60s.
When she got emotional it always seemed so real. I geniunely felt sorry for her when a baby was brought into the house and she got jealous of the attention the baby was getting. Some 30 years later, _Full House_ would do the same story but nowhere near as good.

Ms. Chapin's nightmarish but ultimately inspirational story is recounted quite well in one of the best Hollywood autobiographies, "My Father Really Does Know Best," now out of print but still can be located at online used book sellers. It can also be borrowed free of charge as text or audiobook at Internet Archive (an excellent resource for free audiobooks).
She is also featured in one of the best episodes of "The E! True Hollywood Story" but her episode is curiously missing from RUclips.

None of it was shocking. I grew up in SoCal. The neighbor's son was in LAPD, plus members of my family worked for the Hollywood studios. I heard so much of her and others all of the time. The Studios kept them out of the News when in trouble only to protect the studios, but they cared for the Money makers, present and past, as much as last weeks spoiled Tuna Salad.
I imagine it continues to be a cutthroat business.

It really should’ve been mentioned that Elinor Donahue was married to the father of her child when she got pregnant.
Elinor had issues as well. She wanted to be grown up but she really had no idea what that entailed. She decided that getting married and having a baby would make her grown up so she decided to marry the first man who asked her. One of the crew members asked her out. They went to a movie. He leaned over and whispered in her ear “I’d like to marry you someday.” She said “OK.” And they married. Then she became pregnant. But that was a problem on the show because her character was an unmarried teenager and being a pregnant unmarried teenager was a big no-no in the 1950’s. That’s why they had to hide her pregnancy.
After Father Knows Best she played the character of the lady druggist on The Andy Griffith Show. Her character was the love interest of Andy Griffith’s character Sheriff Andy Taylor. That didn’t work out. Those 2 had no chemistry. She was also exhausted from 6 years on Father Knows Best and going straight to The Andy Griffith Show. She had a 3 year contract but asked to be released from it at the end of the first season. She was in the process of divorcing her husband and then she became a single mom of a 3 year old boy. It was just too much for her. She was a talented actress. I don’t think any of the difficulties she was going through hurt her acting ability at all.
That said I did not like Elinor Donahue’s character Betty (Princess) on Father Knows Best. She seemed spoiled or something.
I didn’t like Lauren Chapin’s character Cathy (Kitten) either. She seemed like a brat to me.
The only one on that show that I could stand was the boy Billy Gray’s character Bud.
I have much compassion for Lauren because of her real life difficulties. No child should be treated like that. I’m glad she has been able to overcome her
horrible childhood and that she has found a purpose. I wish her well.

The statement was that by her 50s she found God, not that she was still in her 50s.

I was upset to find out that Robert Young was a drunk! I was hoping that he would have been a role model and loving to her since her parents were so abusive. Maybe he was at least nice to her.
He actually was a role model. She spent weekends with him and his family during the show's run. He was the positive father figure that she didn't have.

I am shocked by 2 things -- the fact that her mother got all of her money, and that Robert Young was said to always be drunk. Just can't wrap my head around either of those things.

I always want to know details about favorite stars, then so often wish I hadn't found out the negative things. Watching the shows after that doesn't ever feel as good. I'm not surprised about Robert Young's drinking. It was quite common in those years, people were always drinking and smoking during work hours, at home and in commercials. There was also drinking shown in shows, even comic shows featuring drunk alcoholics. It seemed normal back then.
It does seem odd that it was almost acceptable to be a fall down slurring drunk back then but any drug use would kill a career and reputation.
