Not sure i have a favorite "Bud" episode, but the one where Betty was confused and scared about graduating hit home. - Helping the old man at the bus station was all she needed to bring her back to reality.
I watched and loved the show as a child during its original run. I remember once my father wanted me to go to bed early and I said please let me watch one more TV show. He asked me what show I wanted to watch. When I said "Father Knows Best" I knew I had him!
Elinor looks fabulous at 85. I loved her on Father Knows Best and The Odd Couple, and thought she was marvelous in that Star Trek episode with Glenn Corbett titled "The Companion." She should have had an Emmy for that one. Elinor, if you're unattached, I'm still available--been saving myself for you for 60 years. Let me know.
As much as a prolific actress as Elinor Donahue is, I’ll always remember her the most as "Betty," the elder daughter in the television family series “Father Knows Best” that ran from 1954 to 1960.
"Father Knows Best" and "Leave it to Beaver" were for the most part, shows with real substance. Each episode set forth a wholesome real life moral. Today things are so political, dissentious, shallow and frivolous. Most earlier TV programing helped strengthen American families. Almost everything today is geared toward driving families apart. Actually, the whole country apart.
I grew up in the 50s and 60s, although it would have been nice to have a family like those two shows in reality that was not the case. Just as many screwed up families back then as their are now.
@@lizregan1949not true. People who had bad parents like to assume everyone else was messed up, but just not true. I didnt know one person with divorced parents until I was in college in late 1970s.
This was an insightful retrospective of Elinor Donahue's career, but you neglected to mention her appearance in the movie "Pretty Woman" as the boutique clerk that helps Julia Robert's character with an evening dress
"Father Knows Best" was the best show during the day which I loved very much because it dealt with morals and ethics and family complications. However, I was saddened that it left teh air until they had a reunion.
"Untimely?" Most shows have a five or six year run. With the kids growing up, the show had run its course. People should know that FATHER KNOWS BEST was a radio show before going to television in 1955. So after six seasons, audiences and sponsors were interested in something new, especially going into a new decade.
She was a charmer as a couture clerk opposite Julia Roberts in " Pretty Woman " . I was stunned when I first saw it and immediately recognized her . A genuine class act !
I always had a crush on Elinor. Had a chance to see her in person once at the Orange, CA street fair at the circle, and she is every bit as lovely as she appeared on screen. She played her role with emotion and great feeling that came through in every episode. Watched "Father Knows Best" every day after school in the late 60's and early 70's, but I'm old enough to remember first run. It always meant a great deal to me.
Six years was a really nice run considering all of the young actors were rapidly aging out of their original roles and it would start getting weird to stay hanging around the house.
Father Knows Best, Ozzie & Harriet, & Leave It To Beaver were my favorite family shows, growing up. They taught me everything I needed to know when I took in my sisters kids --- traditional family values. My parents & sis' kids ( from 2 yrs old twins) all moved in with me & we lived a very pleasant UPSCALE 'tv family' stylish life together....life sometimes does imitate art. Now, kids grown & have families , parents deceased, & I still regularly watch same shows I've seen hundreds of times before-- so comforting & bit sad that
Robert Young wasn't "hired" to play the title roll in _Father Knows Best._ He owned the show, from the beginning, with partner and coproducer Gene Rodney. The pair brought the old radio show to TV, after discussing taking it to the big screen. Also, in personal interviews (from one of which I obtained her autograph), Elinor said she left the Andy Griffith Show because her funnier lines kept being given to Don Knotts (whom, she admitted, was more a natural comic), and consequently, her relationship with Griffith's onscreen character just didn't seem to gel. She was also going through some personal issues in her private life, including a divorce from first husband Richard Smith (a sound guy on Father Knows Best), in 1961.
Watched "Father Knows Best," quite frequently when it aired on TV...then all of a sudden it wasn't there anymore. Now I know what happened to the show. Thanks Facts Verse for letting me know about it! 👍
I am totally amazed at how this wonderful TV show ended up. This was one of the few sweet memories of my distant childhood years ... Thank you so much for sharing it with all of us !!!
I had a huge crush on Elinor When I was a kid in the 1950;s. I thought she was gorgeous! I watched "Father Knows Best" religiously. It always taught a life lesson.
Robert Young was not just an actor who was hired to be on FKB , he was co producer in partnership with Eugene Rodney with a silent assist from Columbia Pictures .
Margaret worked that kitchen and ran that household with love, class, and style. She was a person in her own right and extremely intelligent. I admire that.
To save 8 plus minutes ... a 1960 writers strike went longer than 2 weeks ... Robert Young and Jane Wyatt consulted that now is the time to end the series, according to Elinor Donahue ... an amazing, talented woman.
It says a lot about American society when you see people consistently posting comments that the fathers on these shows were their role models -- as opposed to people in their lives. The truth is there was plenty of dysfunction in 1950s families -- lots of alcoholism and vets from WWII with PTSD. So many people talk like it was perfect then and blame the people and culture that came afterwards for ruining the American family. The 50s had sexually harassment aplenty as well as pedophiles and rape. People preferred not to talk about it.
I still get tired of hearing the opinion that there was no chemistry between Andy's character and Elinor. They were terrific together, though she did look much younger than Andy, I always enjoyed her on the show and felt there was a nice bond being created. As you mention here, her fears caused her to be released from her contract, but IMHO, I never got any feeling she and Andy were not meant for each other.
I ghostwrote for Star Trek 1987 and was a 60's fan of Elinor,so I wrote to Gene in my description of character Ensign Ro,"looks like Elinor from Father Knows Best ",played by Michelle Forbes.
Saw a few Andy Griffith show episodes with Elinore and Father knows best (vaguely remember the reunion movie) too. But I really enjoyed Her in the Odd Couple tv show as Felix’s girlfriend. I wonder if she likes younger men since she still looks great in her mid 80’s 😊
You're a true fan! Thank you so much for sharing your life story and we understand the feeling. If we may ask, which role of Elinor appealed to you the most?
@@dalehoward3704 She was the store clerk that helped Julia's character shop for appropriate clothing for her to wear to go out with Richard Gere's character. Hector Elizondo's hotel manager hooked them up!
@@FactsVerse I would have to say that I could not pick one episode over another one. I liked more so when the kids were older, Betty was in college and Bud was ready to attend college and then in college. By that time, Kathy was no longer a small child and was more mature in her actions.

Always loved Ellie...! Still do and still watch the shows she's in. Actually watching her now on MeTV in Father Knows Best. Miss her a lot... Thanks for all you've done Elinor on the screen and off... We'll always love you. You were and will always be one of the best imo. Fv do one on The Beverly Hillbillies - Donna Douglas and Nancy Kulp. I didn't like Nancy Kulp when I was younger but for some odd reason, I like her character and the way she acts now... Precise with all her answers... Good video Fv... Love you Ellie...!
I didn't watch any of her earlier shows. I just remember her from Star Trek in the "Companion" episode, which introduced the character Zefram Cochrane. Interestingly, her mother on Father Knows Best, Jane Wyatt, also had a memorable role on Star Trek as Spock's mother. Would love to watch these earlier shows.
I am shocked that the two "parents" wanted out. I guess this also illustrated that the world was changing, with the writers' strike and all actually. Maybe that had an affect. Like the poster below, I would have loved to see Donahue continue on Andy Griffith. She was the best girlfriend. Also "Kitten" complained the father character Jim Anderson made her uncomfortable as the actor drank a bit too much.
Think about it: Robert Young, by 1960, had played Jim Anderson on radio and television versions of "father Knows Best" for 10 years. That's an awful amount of time, dedication, and work for one role. Let's see how you would've fared appearing in 39 episodes in one season, let alone, 10. I'm sure Jane Wyatt grew tired of a role she played for 6 years. That's very normal and they chose to take care of themselves. They had an excellent 6-year run with the television version of "Father Knows Best".
Unlike many family TV series of the 1950s and early 1960s that portrayed life events only as a sequence of lollipops and roses, sugar and spice and everything nice, there was unfortunately just as much depravity then as there is now. At least “The Andy Griffith Show” was truer to life. The things I remember most about “The Andy Griffith Show” is that it covered a plethora of societal issues good and bad from the innocuous, such as judging a beauty contest and a pickle tasting contest and taking piano lessons to the egregious; to include, but not limited to, numerous reckless discharges of a service firearm, juvenile delinquency, bullying, vandalism, marital abandonment, domestic abuse, mental illness, the possible cultivation of cannabis in the environs of Mayberry, public drunkenness, bootlegging, attempted bank robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment, racketeering, and bookmaking, that is accepting and paying off bets. Need I say more?
I always felt like Andy Griffith may have not appreciated Elinor and not "been in her corner" supporting her role. I loved her as Ellie Walker much more than Anita as Helen Crump. I always felt Elinor was more natural and funny. A little more support from Andy and Elinor would have made the show much better.
I guess she wrote her memoirs because I didn’t hear of Any Griffith perusing her. The did lack chemistry on screen. Andy Griffith was a cad and a big disappointment.
If only it were possible to make shows like Father Knows Best and Andy Griffith today. I always felt Elinor Donahue was terrific in the parts she played. And I am surprised about the cancelling of FKB. I wonder what reasons Robert Young and Jane Wyatt would give for not coming back even after a 6-month forced hiatus by the Writers' Strike? As for Elinor not finding her niche on the AG show, maybe that too was a writer's thing.
I loved her as the sister of Dr. Quinn...especially the episode when she stood up to her overbearing mother. I always thought it was odd the she called her parents in FKB mother and father and one sibling called them mom and dad and the other called them momma and daddy. In most homes they all call them the same name.
Nuh-uh. It was the age group of the kid. My oldest sister who was closer to Betty's age, (and 14 years older than me) called our mother, "Mother". I called my mother Mommy until my other older sister who was Lauren Chapin's age called our mother, "Mom". At a certain point my brother and I started copying our sister and called our mother, Mom. I never stopped calling my father Daddy. I think my mother called her father Daddy.
Robert Young wasn't "hired" to play Jim Anderson. Young was one of the producers of the show (it was a Eugene Rodney-Robert Young Production). He probably had final cast approval.
Robert Young spent many days in rehab and AA and battled depression .This channel is too kind and I guess I am not being kind. People who drink never realize the harm they do to the people around them.
I sure am surprised ! We depended on that show every week and we still have watched reruns through the years. New tv shows aren't like they use to be --PERIOD !
Billy Gray, who played "Bud" on the show, cites another reason for why it got canceled: "That show was a total lie about American family life and I'm sorry I had anything to do with it." Gray, a close personal friend of Jack Nicholson, agreed to return for the FATHER KNOWS BEST reunion episode only on the condition that he got to play his off screen self---a professional motorcycle driver.
Poor bud. Father Knows Best is the only thing he'll ever be known for and all he can do is crap all over it because of its liiieeesss, all liiieeesss, nothing but liiieeesss. Jackass. At least he was buds with JACK NICHOLSON. Big f-ing woo. Didn't do much for his career. Though JACK did get his bud a role in one of his biggest films; uncredited, poor ol' bud is unrecognizable in his only scene wearing a bear costume. :)
I think there is much more to the story. Robert Young didn't retire from acting and neither did Jane Wyatt. They had long careers after FKB. They probably just didn't like the contracts they had and used the strike to get out from under them.
No one ever seems to want to admit it as fans of The Andy Griffith Show, but I think what didn't help the chemistry with her was her long association as Betty Anderson and her seeming being too young to be his love interest - much like Mary Tyler Moore's insistence in her next show that Mary Richards not be a divorcee due to her association with being Laura Petri for so many years!
i didn't know why it ended, only that i couldn't see elinor every week. what a crush i had on her! betty was the babe! poor kitten didn't fare as well.
I liked her as Betty in Father Knows Best but did not like her character as Ellie on Andy Griffith. She was often angry with Andy over some situation in the plot and she did not play the anger correctly. It felt over the top. It was interesting to see her on Star Trek because Jane Wyatt had played Spock's mother and when we saw the episode she was on, we used to say, "There's Spock's half-sister."
Elinor was an infinitely better girl friend for Andy than Anita - think about it every time Andy and Anity were together her explosive temper blew them apart she was always MAD at Andy
TV Shows like " Father Knows Best" and " Leave it to Beaver" were MUST WATCH TV Shows as I was a child growing up in the 50's. In those post WWII days of the 1950's the post war BOOM was going strong, everyone was full of optimism for the future. Both " Father Knows Best" and " Leave it to Beaver" were HOLLYWOOD Creations that try to IDEALIZE what the U.S.A. life style was at the time. However, it was far more FANTACY then REALITY!, a lot of just wishful thinking for the VAST MAJORITY of Americans, I would myself many years later looking back realize that these shows were really to viewed with the same understanding you give " Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny ". However, that's the way it was and Elinor Donahue was a part of it all. It is now as I write these words the year "2023" , The Post WWII ECONOMIC BOOM has long been over and " FATHER KNOWS BEST " and it's portrayal of a Typical American Family is so far from the present reality that one could simply CRY while wondering where it all went wrong and brought to this TIME PLACE and STATE OF AFFAIRS in the U.S.A.
I’ve always had (& still do) have a mad crush on Ms Ellie. She’s a very sultry lady. She’s absolutely gorgeous, sexy & familiar. I adore that woman. She’s truly a wonderful gift from God to mankind.
We have to remember the VAST numbers of shows put out in a single TV season back then. The show had an amazing run. With that writer's strike, and therefore forced break in production stride, it sounds like Robert and Jane both had time to reflect on the past several years, and the future. The fact it coincided with the start of a new decade otherwise may have been an influence too. I think it probably ended at the right time. Leave It To Beaver also did, but seemed to have more "indicators" it was time, due to Wally going off to college, and Beav approaching high school age. Then there was the unknown factor of what was to happen in late 1963, keeping the show in the IKE/JFK years only. Coincidentally, 1957 & 1963 are identical calendar years. I was born in the former, just 5 months old when it debuted, and just turned 6 when it ended. My favorite season was '61-'62 which featured Wally, Eddie and Lumpy (over Beaver) as the show's focal points.

Father Knows Best and My Three Sons were favorites with my family. I have see. Elinor more recently (relatively) in Murder She Wrote and other later shows
I read Elinor Donahue decided she and Andy Griffith lacked the chemistry to make their on-screen romantic relationship credible. That's why she felt uncomfortable in the adult role and she decided to leave the show. I'll bet she would have stayed if Troy Donahue or Frankie Avalon were her love interest.
There are some RUclips videos that also surmise the lack of chemistry was the reason she left TAGS. I always wonder about if amazing chemistry that Anita and Andy had, both on and off screen, even though Andy was married, was already in play when Elinor left.
@@enigmawyoming5201 I thought about that possibility. Not only did Andy have an affair with the actress who played his love interest, but the actress who played Thelma Lou wrote in an autobiography that she had a crush on Andy the whole time. He showed no interest in her, however. That's Hollyweird.
After six years, it wasn't surprising that the show ended. The children had outgrown their roles, the youngest, Loren Chapin was already 13. And Billy Gray had gotten into to trouble with "the law" on a few occasions. Sitcoms built around families reach that certain point where the original formula becomes worn out, and the situations for the kids become awkwardly strained once they enter their teens. This was particularly a challenge in writing contemporary material for teens in the 1960s when television programs seems still weighted in values of the 1940s. And the Writer's Strike explanation for the show's cancellation does not seem credible since FATHER'S KNOWS BEST was not the only television show in production, and those others continued in production during this time. Also, Robert Young did not have to be "cast." It was already his show that originated as a radio show. But it does seem credible that Robert Young and Jane Wyatt were tired of the show after six years. And six years is long enough. Had the show continued another four years, it would have been on 10 years. When a show has been on five years or more, it's best to end it before it overstays its welcome and looses viewers. Sponsor wanted an audience and so did the networks since ratings determined their advertising rates that subsidized the production of programming then. Elinor Donahue's interview offers a much different and details account of her audition for Betty Anderson. People need to hear her telling of it to get the true story. And according to Billy Gray, Elinor was not that experienced as an actress. While Elinor was awkwardly cast on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, it was understood that the focus of the comedy was on the relationship between Andy and Barney Fife. The Helen Crump character did not show up until two years later. In the meantime, three other love interests were attempted, the one with the most potential being in the character of County Nurse, Peggy, played by Joanna Moore. She had the best chemistry with Andy Griffith, was a genuine match to Griffith's character portraying a southern woman. But apparently the Producers and the Network were nervous about the sexual allure that Miss Moore projected with Griffith and they settled with the more platonic, neutral relationship with Helen Crump.
I highly recommend Elinor's FoundationInterview where she talks in detail about her entire career; a gracious, modest and very thoughtful woman. Betty Anderson was a complicated character, a high-strung and idealistic perfectionist who often lashed out in frustration when the world wouldn't live up to her expectations. She could have been spun off into a show of her own as a young adult and there were a few episodes during the final season where it looked like those waters were being tested. Especially one where Betty gets a job and winds up in ambivalent competition with a male co-worker.
She was fantastic on FKB and Andy blew it letting her go. I also loved her on the Odd Couple and anything she popped up on. She deserved more screen time as she always was an attention getter and worked great with all her costars the best we could tell. A great lovable actress for sure!

As much as a prolific actress as Elinor Donahue is, I’ll always remember her the most as "Betty," the elder daughter in the television family series “Father Knows Best” that ran from 1954 to 1960.

Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
"Father Knows Best" and "Leave it to Beaver" were for the most part, shows with real substance. Each episode set forth a wholesome real life moral. Today things are so political, dissentious, shallow and frivolous. Most earlier TV programing helped strengthen American families. Almost everything today is geared toward driving families apart. Actually, the whole country apart.
Glad to know that you're a fan! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Which FKB episode is the most memorable for you?
Father knows best was weak bs.
I agree with you shows when I was growing up were alot better and more family friendly
This was an insightful retrospective of Elinor Donahue's career, but you neglected to mention her appearance in the movie "Pretty Woman" as the boutique clerk that helps Julia Robert's character with an evening dress
I love Father Knows Best. I'm retired and I watch it every morning. I wish Lauren, Ellen, and Billy would get together one more time.
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
"Father Knows Best" was the best show during the day which I loved very much because it dealt with morals and ethics and family complications. However, I was saddened that it left teh air until they had a reunion.
We're happy to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
"Untimely?" Most shows have a five or six year run. With the kids growing up, the show had run its course. People should know that FATHER KNOWS BEST was a radio show before going to television in 1955. So after six seasons, audiences and sponsors were interested in something new, especially going into a new decade.
She was a charmer as a couture clerk opposite Julia Roberts in " Pretty Woman " . I was stunned when I first saw it and immediately recognized her . A genuine class act !
We remember it, thanks for the trip down memory lane 💗

Now, kids grown & have families , parents deceased, & I still regularly watch same shows I've seen hundreds of times before-- so comforting & bit sad that
She was also on a TV show called Cold Case.
Interesting, thanks for sharing this info about Elinor. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
To be honest I watched Father knows Best and Andy Griffith just to see Elinor. I thought she was rather captivating and had a beautiful smile

Is that Robert Reed/Mike Brady at 4:29 ?!? WILD !!!
My thought, too!
Anyone remember the 'short wave radio' episode... The entire episode took place in their living room.. talking to someone ship wrecked off shore
I remembered it from my childhood, and found it again online several years ago. It was just as good.
To save 8 plus minutes ... a 1960 writers strike went longer than 2 weeks ... Robert Young and Jane Wyatt consulted that now is the time to end the series, according to Elinor Donahue ... an amazing, talented woman.
Ty?
Elinor Donahue was a very under-rated actress.

I had always thought it was Elinor Donahue‘s fault I thought she quit the show to be On the Andy Griffith show.

Thank you, Angie
I was disappointed I loved Elinor we all did what a faboulous nice woman so kind we miss her even as Andy’s girl friend

She was very good at playing “Miram” one of “Felix’s” love interest in the Odd Couple.
I loved her as the sister of Dr. Quinn...especially the episode when she stood up to her overbearing mother. I always thought it was odd the she called her parents in FKB mother and father and one sibling called them mom and dad and the other called them momma and daddy. In most homes they all call them the same name.
Us too! Thank you for bringing back memories. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
She was also in the movie pretty woman
Robert Young spent many days in rehab and AA and battled depression .This channel is too kind and I guess I am not being kind. People who drink never realize the harm they do to the people around them.
“ Eleanor Donahue reveals” suggests an interview with the star. It was not that. That’s not right.
What a shame...
A family praying together! Imagine that today!
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and enjoy the have a great evening!☺
She really did not do a good job of raising Bud and Kathy. Betty turned out normal but those other two had psychological issues it seemed.
I'll tell you what Father knows Best was a darn all of them especially Robert what a great dad
Elinor was an infinitely better girl friend for Andy than Anita - think about it every time Andy and Anity were together her explosive temper blew them apart she was always MAD at Andy
Andy frequently did stupid stuff to make her angry.
She also played a bit part as Katherine on an episode of The Golden Girls in 1989 . She married Dorothy's ex-husband Stan .
I’ve always had (& still do) have a mad crush on Ms Ellie. She’s a very sultry lady. She’s absolutely gorgeous, sexy & familiar. I adore that woman. She’s truly a wonderful gift from God to mankind.
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for Elinor! We had a crush on her too. In your opinion, what is her finest role?
@@FactsVerse I don’t typically pick favorites. However, I absolutely adored Ellie in the Andy G Show. She made that show a must see.
After hearing she might not have made the role,it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the role.
Once the Two leads who played the Parents didn't want to return after the strike ended..That kinda ended the series..
*This massive discrepancy exists despite the fact that there is no gender bias in the law favoring females.*
Whether you like it or not, the welfare system forces you as a man to pay for single women, many of whom, as you know, are degenerates.
Without welfare and all kinds of affirmative action promoting women in the workplace, women can't support themselves. The feminist welfare state just distributes the burden of taking care of women to all working men. So you, as a man, have the burden of financially supporting these women without any benefit in return, women who will berate you and call you an incel if you disagree with how stunning and brave they are.
*Basically, Western liberalism forces you as a man to fund the lifestyle of women drinking, sleeping around with a new man every night, popping anti depressants like candy, going to the womens march on weekends to whine about how oppressed they are. You're literally subsidizing all that.*
Women being free is not free. Someone has to foot the bill.
*Islam says, no. No one gets a free ride. You want to be taken care of, you have to be in a marriage as an obedient wife. And if you dont want to be an obedient wife, go be a burden on your father, who didn't raise you right. And if you don't want to live under your father's roof, go live in the wilderness or beg on the streets. See how long you last there.*
I was surprised & even more surprised that Robert Young would do another series, the very popular Marcus Welby M D
Father Knows Best and My Three Sons were favorites with my family. I have see. Elinor more recently (relatively) in Murder She Wrote and other later shows
We're glad to know that you love Father Knows Best. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
Interesting, thank you so much for sharing this info. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
My parents passed but I love watching father knows best tv now is bs compared to back then
After six years, it wasn't surprising that the show ended.
