- Welcome to our series Behind the Feast, where we take you behind the scenes of a professional video production studio. Today, we are giving our First Impressions of the Tilta Float.
The Tilta Float System works in conjunction with the DJI RS 2 gimbal to provide a small, compact camera stabilizer system to allow you to accomplish smooth cinematic camera movements with smaller camera setups. At Digital Feast Studios, we have used the Tilta Float on a few paid video shoots in recent weeks and this is our first impressions. More Float videos to come. The Tilta Float can fly most smaller to mid-sized photo cameras. Most Video Production companies could benefit from this kind of stabilized floating Video footage.

Great overview guys! We appreciate the depth you go into for first impressions. Looking forward to your future Float content!
The Idea of this system is great but it is far too uncomfortable to use for any length of time and the small teeth on the rosette that holds arm up are far too small I had camera gear almost land on floor because one of the small screws was not tight enough and prevented it from locking properly, in short it needs a better vest and better locking system for the arm and then it will be worth getting until then it is far to difficult to set up and potentially risky to hold your gear on.
I'll buy one once Titla addresses these cons.

Glad you mentioned Junior’s Trinity video as I watched a lot of people talk about balancing the Tilta Float the same as a steady cam with the 3 second drop time, which is true with the roll balance but not drop. Keep up the great work 🙏🏽😎👍🏼

I see a lot of the walking step effect in the shots, from the pool and the lobby of the theater. I would have hope it would have got rid of that.
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe it's how you hold it and they aren't letting the Float do the work it should be doing?

I couldn’t get the belt and arm to work. It was a mess, so I sold it on eBay and bought a vest with a fixed arm. Much better setup for me.

Really great and so helpful video. Which stand are you using for docking and balancing? Mine are WAY too flimsy to hold my Float. Thanks again, very pro...
We typically use C-stands with a sandbag because I find them to be a lot more sturdy. I would only recommend stands used for heavier lights or rigging. I would be very nervous using beginner light stands for balancing. Hope this helps!
Crazy Tilta doesn't have a docking bracket for the Float. A docking bracket is so essential for this type of stabilizer. That said, this was one of the best videos on YT I've seen so far on the Float. I really think it was good of you guys to point out you don't just put this on the first time and it's perfect. Steadicam operation is a skill, it's not the rig, its the operator and practice and experience are essential to hone the craft. I've flown a couple different Steadicam rigs and had the Ronin-S and now the RS-2 so I'm not new to stabilizers. I'm really hoping the Float sells well but I think I'll pass until they hopefully come out with gen 2 that fixes some of the really bad issues with balancing the current model has.

Thanks for the video. Super helpful for real world shooting use. Not just about the fancy pictures 😉. I just want to ask, is there a way to power the camera and monitor from the v-locks? That would be the best outcome, everything running off the V-locks would sell it for me.
Not yet, we still power the camera with its own battery as well as the Ninja V.

Thank you! We haven’t explored many alternatives but any steadicam docking bracket should work with the included adapted.
To avoid the + nato rails at the battery plate from binding because of the weight, just bring the steadycam vertically and do the small adjustment and then tilt it back to horizontal to verify the adjustment. That way you actually dont even have to lock the nato rail into place as it will hold itself with the weight (just support it obviously just in case, but so far i didnt have any issue). Same for the gimbal nato rail.

Thank-you for explaining the pros and cons of this system vs the Ronin/gimbals. I can see how for occasional use/short shoots the Ronin system may be sufficient and less expensive, but for regular shooting the Float is a good investment to save your back.
We totally agree - We have had the float out on at least 60+ shoots and have perfected the balancing and use cases for the float. It is a main stay for our business. All b-roll shoots are shot with the float. We will have a future video on all the modifications we have made to the float and everything we have learned. Stay tuned

Hello and thanks for the video. Did you consider using another arm+vest from another brand, together with the Tilta Float post? While the post at the end looks like a very interesting element used with the RS2, probably better for a "Trinity"-style use than any other reasonable solution around thought for Steadycam use, Tilta's belt solution looks really really weird and impractical and it isn't adopted by any "seasoned" maker of vests+arms on the market. I don't think it is because nobody thought about that belt thing until now.
I was considering to get the Tilta Float just for the post and accessories, together with the Flycam Vista ii arm+vest. (too bad Tilta doesn't offer an option to buy only the post with the accessories)
The mounting compatibility for a non-proprietary arm pin should be a very easily solvable issue, maybe already using the included baby pin adaptor in the Tilta Float or another solution with a sturdy clamp holding a right sized pin for the Tilta (which is 12mm if I am right). Even adding a big Manfrotto clamp+pin grip wouldn't be a problem for the Vista-ii arm, as its maximum payload is way higher.
The advantage is a much easier balancing procedure and especially the fact that one can store separately the arm and the vest already balanced and reassemble everything in a few seconds keeping the balance, which looks like a dream in comparison to all this.
Nicola, We have modified the vest that Tilta supplied. I recently saw that Tilta created an accessory for the belt, turning it into a vest. We have done many modifications, we have a future show coming out on everything we learned and all the changes that have made the float a main stay for our company.
Is it possible to use this system with a DJI RS2 without the post/pole? I work in limited space and do not move much myself - I basically want something to support the weight - a belt and a support arm. Perhaps using a 1/4"-20 to baby pin adapter?
Yes we have a different configuration that we use with the Vest and arm. It is different and is be great for small spaces. It takes the load off your arms and works really well.

Sky, we modified the battery situation - This video uses the v-mount double battery plate that came with the float. We have a different configuration now. Stay tunes, we will get a video out on all this soon.

Thx for this great video. You are using the Proaim mount for the float. To hang the float on it you need an adapter. In the video you describe that Tilta offers this. Do you have a link or name for this.

What are the adapters you mentioned to use a steadicam arm with the tilta float? I know the steadicam post is 1/2 inch but I can't seem to find the size of the tilta float. Trying to get these ordered asap as I have a tilta float on the way that I was planning to use my steadimate with. Thanks in advance!
Jamie, it was part of the Tilta Float Kit when we purchased it. You should be good to go on Delivery. It is smaller than a steady cam. Not sure of the exact measurement. We have another Float video coming out in a few weeks, it will be our 1 year review with the float. Good luck with your float.

Thank you for you kind words, we really appreciated it! First I would recommend checking out our latest review as we've made some decent modifications to our float. But if you're just looking for the necessary equipment to get started I would first recommend the Tilta Float Docking Station and a strong stand to support it. (I'll provide links at the bottom of my comment) Next I would recommend the Tilta shoulder harness since it really improves the security of the vest. I would also recommend a pendulum weight (check out our pendulum video for an install guide) and Lastly at least two solid V-mount batteries.

I got my float last week but seems like the upper part of the vest digs into my back and it hurts while using it. Unless I’m doing something wrong. I can’t stand to have it on what’s your take on it?
We have modified the belt and turned it into a vest and distributed the the weight off the hips. Tilta just came out with an accessory that can help. today I got tilta counterweight bracket and I don’t understand how you got it fixed on the bottom platform with the batteries?
We used a long screw at just the right length that would go through the center of the bottom platform into the bottom of the battery plate. It's important that the screw is the perfect length and that the head of the screw is fairly flat/thin as to not get in the way of the pendulum pieces. I had the grind to head of the screw down to make sure that didn't happen. I will go more into detail about this in a later video and show how I did it, because it did require modifications further than Tilta's configuration. Hope this helps for now!

Hey guys I just watched your video and I’m really digging this product.
I had a gimbal rigged up on a SteadyCam arm with a ball head a year or so before any type of rig like that came to market. My solution it still better than most of those .
Then I also use a SteadyCam sled too . I can put my gimbal on top that SteadyCam sled also but that’s getting a little unwieldy and has a huge presence and long .
This product is compact for what it is .

I appreciate your comment and understand your frustration. This technology is new and evolving in the industry. It has its pros and cons, as we explained. We found that with more practice and greater understanding of the mechanism,, we've been able to safely and confidently use the float on a project by project basis. I think if you stick with it, make the adjustment, and work through the challenges, you will have capabilities that few videographers have. Good luck!
@@digitalfeast I could not use it as it was far too painful I have a bad back to start with but as i explained the locking mechanism failed on me once and the whole lot nearly landed on the floor until some changes are made I would not trust this system to work without failing again. I found it transferred all the pressure immediately to my lower back and within a minute of wearing it I was hurting that has not just been my experience and I believe it to be a flawed design. however I sent the system back and will continue to look for a system that works.

Guys, there's bounce EVERYWHERE, you're not exactly giving me confidence in your judgement.
We have been using the float now for almost a year. We have perfected the balancing and have modified the float in many ways. We will have something out soon to show you what we have learned.
Learn how to operate! That's not how you hold a Steadicam! (which is why you see so much heavy handed "footstepping" in your shots.) I suggest you take a course. It will really help you greatly improve.
Ive wanted to take a course but have been able to get around to it yet. However when I made this video I had just picked up a steadicam for the first time so I'd love to hear your thoughts on my more recent review. I feel I operate very differently from how I started.
