- This John Widdicomb dresser was such an amazing quality piece. When I researched the company, I found that they were known for crafting quality pieces made of cherry. I was pretty excited when I started scraping the top and found cherry wood! Because of the raised details on the front of the dresser, it did not lend itself to a full refinish. I decided to strip the top and refinish it and then repaint the body. Cherry wood is notorious for being difficult to stain and I had to refinish this top three times! The weather was in the 100’s when I was refinishing it, so I suspect that played a part in some of my problems. In the end, I achieved a beautiful finish.
After filling as many distressing marks on the body as possible, I primed and painted the body. As a final touch, I add gilding to the top and bottom molding as well as the round medallions. Whew. This was quite a project.

My first husband was a cabinet maker. One of their tricks for fixing little pit marks in the wood was to mix some of the sawdust from sanding the wood with Elmer's wood glue to make a putty and then us your finger or a plastic putty knife and then let it dry good. This way the sawdust is the color of the natural wood so you don't have to worry about matching and it's easy so if you don't have a wood putty on hand.
Love the finished product ❤
Great idea! Thanks! 😊
My son learned this in a woodworking class in high school. Thanks for reminding us about this great trick.
Using sawdust is what I have been using for years. Now there are so many more options.
This is probably the most dramatic transformation I have ever seen and I am addicted to furniture refinishing videos. Absolutely stunning!
Aw, Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I was worn out after watching 😂. Great job.
Ha! I was worn out too! 🫠 Thanks so much! 😊🙌🏼
Oh, I wanted to cry for you when the oil pulled up the stain. It came out gorgeous!
Right?! So frustrating 😩 Thanks so much. 🤩
I commend you for your sticktoitiveness! I would have been have been throwing things, saying bad words, and crying over that top. Scraping that down again would have me hunting for a sledge hammer! And again. It’s beautiful!
Well, I definitely had my moments. When the oil started taking off the gel stain, I just paused and thought surely that’s not happening. 🫠 I’m so glad it turned out in the end.
What a glorious piece!!! The original colors were so beautiful that I cringed at the thought of changing it! But who could recreated that?!!! You chose a classic color and it looks lovely!! You are such a trooper!! What a job!
Aw, thank you for your kind words 🫶
Especially a showcase with her oriental vases. WOW! I LOVE THIS.
Thank you! 😊
I've gone through four of your videos.. I love your attention to detail.. I love your style. Good job Mama ... I can't believe what you found..
In my family I have Master farmers and master carpenters. I was born a girl. I was never allowed near the wood. No joke. I was the only grandchild that would freeze my buns off in the barn. Working sanding paint... But never allowed to cut.. never....
I have always had an eye for things like You're doing. I begged my husband to show me how to use tools. He said, I'll do that when I come home. I don't want you to hurt yourself. I've been fighting stage 4 cancer for 2 years. Got it down to stage 3. Woohoo. But I don't have the strength to do what you're doing anymore..
I share your videos with my husband. He said. I'm such a fool. I'm sorry I never gave you the opportunity to learn the tools like you asked me to.. I was just being a polite wife not touching his tools..
I don't know what it is about this life and the men that won't let me around wood. No joke.. funny thing about would. I actually married a man with that in his name. 😅😂😅
When my grandfather died. I was really excited I wanted all of his tools. Every bit of them..
I'm not going to tell you what happened to them. Devastated me. The whole family was shocked. Because I was the only one that wasn't allowed to use any of the tools. But I was the only grandchild that would actually sand, paint and help my grandfather with his wood and crafts. I didn't want to make crafts. I wanted to make furniture.
I can feel my grandfather's Spirit behind me. I'm so sorry.. but... My grandfather's whole woodworking shop went to a high school. The energy that will come off of that will be grand. Maybe it was life keeping me away from something that would have made life hard for me. Who knows..
I think it's gorgeous.
Oh, I am so sorry! That is heartbreaking. 😥 I wish you could have enjoyed your grandfather’s tools. I hope you are able to do some projects at some point. ❤️🩹
Stunning! I’m fine with the painted raised detail. It’s like embossing. Just enough gold. I’m glad you left it where you did.
❤
Thanks so much! 😊🙌🏼 that is a perfect description- embossing 🤩
Each piece seems to have one area that is determined to drive you nuts. Well done on cracking it in the end to create another beautiful product. Well done.👍
Right?! Why can’t they be easy?! 😬
Gorgeous! And I LOVE the raised detail! It makes it all pop! And with those beautiful drawer pulls, it needed just a tad more gold to tie it all together. So elegant!
Thanks Tracy! I loved it too! More gold is always a good idea 🤩
Omg, I can't tell how much I learned about products I have never used today! Beautiful out come on the pieces!💖💖💖💖💖
Aw, thanks Cookie!
Wow. the top....good for you for hanging in there. It came out gorgeous!
Thank you! 😊 I loved the final product 🥰
Turned out lovely. Love stain and paint and the little bling gold touch is splendid! Well done! You have so much more patience than I would have had!
😉😜😂
Aw, thanks so much! 🤩
Its gorgeous! And I normally dont like blue. True sign of an artist, make someone fall in love with something outside their comfort zone 😍 thank you for all your amazing tips 😊 I enjoy and appreciate your thorough work as well.
Ah, thank you! 🫶 That blue was stunning💙
Wow, so much work, the finished product is gorgeous! Thank you for showing all the steps, even the ones that didn't work and how you fixed them. It's such a good learning experience for a lot of us. :)
You are so welcome! Thank you!
Oh boy Lisa you hung in there girl! I learned a lot from this video! I love your optimism. Many people may have thrown in the towel. Did you keep track of the hours? I can't even imagine!! Beautiful job! Obviously I wouldn't do anything different. I'm learning from the experts!😊patty k.
Thanks Patty!! No, I didn’t keep track on this one 🫣 Probably more than I should have, but I loved the final product 🤩
You are a very patient and determined person….looks great
Thank you! 🫶
Love that navy blue!!💙💙💙
Me too! 💙🤩
Stunning! Well worth the time and effort, well done!
Many thanks! 😊
Lisa: you did a great job. The dresser looks great. You were dealing with a John Widdecomb piece, the top of the line. As an interior designer, and I saw that piece it brought back a lot of great memories. It did make me edgy when you started to pull off the decorative painting though. However, you did a super job of bringing it into the 21st Century. Carol from California
Thank you, Carol! I’m sure it was stunning was it was new. It pained me a bit, scraping it off, but since the finish was failing it needed it. I love the final look. Thanks for the feedback!
Love the navy. You did a really good job on the top.
@@mariondavis3444 thanks! I loved the navy too 🤩💙
In the end...BRAVO
Thanks so much! 😊🙌🏼
Wow, you turned this piece into a show stopper! It's absolutely gorgeous! The top turned out beautiful in the end. I have to say persistence always pays off! 😊❤
I just knew it could be beautiful 🤩 Thanks!
Absolutely beautiful and you did a great job! You have such great patience! I probably would have been crying! You are so talented! I pray you were compensated for your time! Again great job and I love it! ❤❤
Aw, thank you so much! Yes, I was compensated well. ☺️🤩
It is absolutely gorgeous. Having just finished a piece with scores of pits and gouges, I could feel your pain. You displayed an amazing amount of patience, and the top turned out beautifully. Honestly, I might have given up on it that last time you had to restart. Your perseverance paid off and I'm now a new subscriber.
Thank you so much! Welcome, I’m glad you’re here 😊
I watch several refurbishing experts 😋
So interesting how I learn different things from each of them.
Oh gosh, I’m not an expert. This is more of a learn with me channel. But I do share what I learn and what works 🫣😊
I would check for lead before sanding. I have found that that style of painted dressers from that era is usually lead based. When trying to raise the grain on the deeper gouges, you can pour drops of water directly on to the gouge before ironing with the wet cloth. That will raise them.
Thankfully I did test for lead and it was negative. I’ll try the water droplet method sometime! Thanks
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
Clean out interior after all sanding is done ❤ it was fashionable to stress wood in 90S with chains or old bunch of keys to give a distressed look . Turned out good apart from the fake brass handles . Well done
Thanks! 😊 🙌🏼
Great job love the combination wood and paint. Beautiful
Thank you very much!
Dark blue, wood and a little gold! Love it! ❤
It’s a great, classic combo! 🤩
What l love about your channel is your willingness to show not only your triumphs but also when things don't go so well. The dark blue set is one of your triumphs! Love it ❤
Thank you! It’s hard to share the fails, but I hope it can be helpful too. 😊
@@ivylane-home it was very timely yesterday when I'd done my first stencilling (on a gift cabinet for a new great daughter) and it looked horrible lol - ended up sanding it off and starting again. I used some owl transfers and was 💯 happy with the end result. Thank you for sharing 👍
Wow! I absolutely love this. Beautiful job!!!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Love your work. You are a true perfectionist and professional. A pleasure to watch. Best wishes in all your endeavors.
Aw, thank you! ☺️

Lots of hard work and very nice results. Thank you for sharing-
Indeed! Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
New subscriber here. I'm watching your videos whenever I can. I'm actually getting ready to pull pieces from our storage, but these will be used in our home. Our pieces are older, but they need more work. So far, I love your channel & your attention to detail.
Welcome Brenda! Thanks so much. 🤩 Good luck on your projects 🙌🏼
Turned out lovely.😊😊😊
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
You are such a smart cookie & your work is so exquisite
Aw, thanks! 😊
It’s so beautiful! Great job!
Thanks Sheila!
Jaw-dropping, I have no words. I am just in awe. Plus, you explained your process clearly. I liked your problem/solution description. Well done.
Aw, thank you!! ☺️🫶
Girl!! The top - omg. My heart dropped. For the love.
Oh, I know! If it’s not one thing it’s the other. 🤦♀️ I’m just glad it turned out in the end 😅
The original was beautiful, but failing like you mentioned. You did a fantastic job updating it and bringing it to it's former glory, just with a different look.
Thank you! I completely agree 😊
Beautiful piece, I love all the detail!
Thank you very much! 😊
I am enjoying your videos so much and I love love love this blue color!
Aw, thanks so much! 🤩🙌🏼
So beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful work. A lot of hard work, dedication and commitment to make it happen.❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👏👏
Indeed! 🫠 Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Handsome piece and perfectly staged
Thank you!!
It’s a beautiful masculine piece.
Thanks! 😊🙌🏼
Love it. Good job.
Thank you!
I learned alot from your staining mishaps. Thanks for sharing the lessons learned. My central VA climate can generate similar conditions so I'll keep that in mind.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching 😊🙌🏼
Third time's the charm! Looks great!
Indeed! Thanks! 😊
Looks nice! I would have used chalk pant and wax over the existing and the wax would have highlighted the details. You are a very patient woman!
Thanks! Yeah, I’m not a chalk paint person 😊 But I do love gold wax. 🤩
It looks great! It's a shame you had to refinish the top 3 times. I would have probably painted it after I had pulled out all my hair! It's very attractive. The blue paint looks fabulous.
Oh gosh, it was SO frustrating! Thanks so much!
Nice! What an improvement!
Thanks so much!
Beautiful
Thank you!
Love it
Thank you! 😊
Very classy looking pieces!
Thank you!
LOVE IT! You did such a beautiful job!
Thank you so much!! 😊
Good golly Miss Molly--so much work and so much patience in this piece--but the end result is Beautiful!
Thank you so much, Mary! 🤩
Very classy! ❤
Thank you! I think so too. ☺
I would have sanded down or scraped off the floral paint embellishments. From afar it makes the finish look as if there's air bubbles underneath. The color is absolutely stunning!
Someone else mentioned that too. The color is SO good! 🙌🏼😊
It is very pretty. I’m so glad the top ended well. It is a beautiful navy.
Thank you! I'm glad it turned out too!
Perfect!
Thank you! 😊
Extraordinary!!!
Thank you so much!
This turned out SO good!!
Thank you!!
You did a beautiful job.
Thanks so much! 🤩
It looks great. Great color.
I loved it too! 💙
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much! 😊
Hi, Lisa. If it were my piece, I think I would have wanted more wood, though I do love that blue! That said, with the weather and the tricky cherry, in reality, I probably wouldn't have had the patience. As always, such exacting and beautiful work!
I know! After not ending up highlighting those raised details, I wondered if it would have been nice to do a full refinish. I don't know. That cherry is tricky. 😬 Thanks for the feedback!
Absolutely beautiful😊😊
Thank you! 😊
Absolutely love it❤
Ty
Beautiful ... ❤ love that people are incorporating "color" into refinished/old pieces of natural wood furniture. (When before I cringed.)
Not anymore!❤!❤
Rather see someone spend $20 at a garage sale or estate sale on real wood (in almost any condition) ... and just have F.U.N. with it.
Even paint a fun or unique color for a kid's room, back patio, hallway ... or that "one piece" in ANY room for a matching SPLASH of color.
Or, paint (chalk paint, stain, gel stain ... whatever) a piece or 2 to match wallpaper in a room.
Or, hire YOU after they find the right style/size furniture they've been waiting to come their way!
I like both! I’ve been in a wood era lately, but I’m itching to paint a piece soon. This one was a favorite 💙
Stunning!
Thanks so much!
I only just found your channel. Clearly, you are an amazing professional with loads of talent. And lots of great tips. I loved this makeover. The only thing wrong was the buyer did not purchase the entire set! What’s up with that? 🤣🤣🤣🤷♀️. Anyway, I liked the blue with the gold details best but also liked he black…very striking and sexy. You nailed it a both ways.
Ha, right?! I thought that was odd too! 🤣 Thanks SO much. Welcome 🤗
This piece is stunning.
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
@@ivylane-home Love your videos!

I would of loved the original piece in my bedroom🤗
Oh, I’m sure it was stunning in its original condition 🤩
IT’S REALLY GOOD.
Thank you!
Beautiful pieces!
Thank you! 🫶
Beautiful. But wow I would of quit and painted the top after the second staining issue. You have patients.
Ha, well I knew it would be beautiful if I could get it right. I’m thankful it turned out in the end. 😅
Beautiful ❤

Love it!

It was a favorite 🥰
I think you nailed it! Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you so much!
EXCELLENT!!!
Thank you!
Such a great job! I felt your frustration with the changes, but you pull it off! Congrats!
Thanks so much!! ☺️
Everything you do is exquisite. I love watching your videos. I absolutely love the way this came out. I have used General Finishes Flat Out Flat for a lot of my projects and was happy to see your toning mixture. I hope you got lots of money for this set. You deserve it.
Aw, thanks Camille! Such kind words. 🫶 Yep, I’ve already used the toning in another project. It’s such a great technique to have.
I used to get totally awesome at the dollar store and it was a fantastic cleaner. It stripped the grime off my kitchen floor like nothing else. And it was a Dollar! However, every time I used I gagged.
I had to give it up because it was going to kill me. The fumes don’t bother you? I wouldn’t doubt that stuff would peel paint.
I dilute it quite a bit so the fumes aren’t strong. 😊🙌🏼
BEAUTIFUL.. EVEN THOUGH IT FOUGHT YOU TOOTH AND NAIL!
Oh indeed! 🫠 Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
I love it!
Thank you!
Going different: I was hoping you would somehow recreate a similar design to the original as it came to you. Even if you could not replicate it, to touch it up and let the age show through. I DO like the top, however. That was a very good choice. Kudos on your problem-solving skills.
Yeah, I’m not sure. I actually considered it but the finish was crackled. I’m not sure if it would be been as sellable with the original design either. 🤔 It’s always a tough call
I admire the patience you have to make a piece the best it can be. I learn so much each time! Your channel is so good because you're really good about explaining the why and how. Not to mention satisfying beautiful results!
Aw, thanks Ann! I truly appreciate your kind and encouraging words. 🫶
You did a wonderful job. I think I would have set it on fire after the second time on the top. It is beautiful.
