    Just a little tip I use. If you keep the sanding dust and mix a little with some PVA wood glue it makes a wood filler with the same colour as the natural wood. Fill it slightly proud to allow for shrinkage and sand smooth. It will take the stain the same as the wood so it makes it easier to camouflage the repair. Only use wood filler if you intend to paint it. Very nice job by the way

      @@trudyeby464 …I use evostick resin W waterproof. I have only used it on oak and I use brush on wax which I rub off after about 19/15 mins. It provides the colour and a nice soft sheen. I don’t know how it would work on any other wood or with any other stain but for me, the results have been perfect

    My husband was a very talented carpenter. Quit school in 10th grade. Joined navy got his ged and took a class by mail and learned drafting. Got a job in a cabinet shop, worked with two very good carpenter 1 from Germany and 1 from Italy where he learned great skills from them. He was great at building he became awsome at remodeling, got his general contractor license. Thats why I love to watch you bring furniture to life. ALOHA retired to Hawaii. 84 lost my husband 6 years ago.

    Just an FYI, you don't glue your drawer bottoms in. You tack them with small tack nails. Another FYI, anytime you need to take apart something glued, use white distilled vinegar using a glue needle. Let it sit for a few mins, then it should come out easy. If not use another go of the vinegar. Works!!

    Hi, wood clamp and saw tip, when you need to use a “fence” as a guide to the saw like you did with the level(way to overcome and adapt), don’t clamp the level down, in this case clamp Behind the level. They will clamp tighter for you. Then put just one clamp on the level to keep if from skidding with you. The level will stay in line for your guide more easily and you won’t have to fight to keep it exactly line up for your straight line.

I must admit when I see a well done painted piece it can really brighten things up. Всегда радует, что при ремонте винтажной мебели дерево остаётся деревом, а не крашеным пластиком. В мебели используют очень простые замки и всегда можно попробовать какие-то старые мебельные ключи и найти рабочий. This video had so much content! Loved learning about the dye stains, and General Finishes has great products and information. Liked learning about the repair process for the back pieces as well as the patched hole techniques. You are an artist at disguising those repairs! 3 questions...I have the same carbide scraper, how often do you have to sharpen the blade before replacing? Mine seems dull after 2 projects even with interim sharpening. Also, how do you advise clients to care for the oiled finish? Is it durable if someone puts a wet glass on it? Question 3, did the 2nd application of the dark stain even out the wood tones on the two different types of wood? The wood color on the two different species was very different with the light brown dye, but seemed very consistent on the finished piece.

    • @ivylane-home
      @ivylane-home  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks Heidi! You’re so sweet 🫶 I flip the blades over to get more use and then buy new when needed. I need to buy a sharpening stone. It’s on the list. I used this oil on a table for myself and it’s super durable. I can be reapplied too. I haven’t given the link to buyer’s about the reapplication, but I should. Yes, when I applied the medium brown stain it totally evened out both wood tones so that they matched. It was magic! 🪄

    I know it's a pain to restore antique furniture but it's best when you can and you do a great job . I have a 100 plus year old oak claw foot dining table and it needs to be restored

    Grand-tastic ! Bonus for fans of thus mahogany .Its called (ribbon cut mahogany) if there's no screw holes in the back of the dresser then it was a short back splash like u said They sell 1x3/4 mahogany by the foot ? I had to make a short one to cover 3 holes . Great piece

    I don't think I have ever seen such beautiful wood. You did a fantastic job restoring it and I'm so glad you didn't paint it . I have painted some pieces recently because I just am too old , but when I was younger and stronger, I always restored to the original wood. I'm curious to know what kind of wood was on your piece? Again, it is beautiful.

    On the smaller, narrower areas that did not strip well, you might have tried a razor blade/utility knife blade using it like a card scraper. Smaller, sharper, and more maneuverable, it might have done the job.

    • @ivylane-home
      @ivylane-home  11 месяцев назад

      Yes, I need a smaller carbide scraper. They make a tiny one with different tips. I just need to put it on my list. 😊

    • @jillosiecki3049
      @jillosiecki3049 11 месяцев назад

      A utility blade is super cheap, and you never have to worry about sharpening it-just toss it out and get the next one. My husband buys a pack of 100 and there are multiple uses. I like the carbide scraper kits, but they have to be somewhat expensive.

    Beautiful and great explanations for us as always. Can you elaborate on why you use OSMO to seal? I don’t see other refinishers use this. Is there a downside to using it? Can you use it over gel stain (oil based) as well as water based stain?

    • @ivylane-home
      @ivylane-home  11 месяцев назад +1

      I found it at Woodcraft and did some research on it. It’s a German company. It’s similar to Odies and Rubio Monocoat, but it came highly recommended so I tried it. I love it! It an oil and wax combo so you get the benefit of both and it dries with a natural feel. It can be applied after a light sanding to freshen it up or fix a scratch.
      You can use it over oil based stains and water based stains. You just need to check dry time before applying.

    I love this style dresser. The holes on the back were mostly likely from a mirror as they used to use long wood or metal pegs that held the mirror in place. Most new dressers screw on to the wood pieces on the back. Gorgeous piece though & I’m glad you didn’t paint it.
