2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime Vs. 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD - PHEV Against Fully Electric! Which Is Best?

  • The auto industry is marching toward full electrification and for consumers looking to buy a midsize SUV for your family, both Toyota and Volkswagen have two enticing options for 2021. The #RAV4Prime is the ultimate version of the RAV4 because it combines two electric motors with a 2.5L gas engine to produce a total of 302 HP, standard AWD, and up to 42 miles of all-electric range and a total of 600 miles of combined range. The #VolkswagenID4 is the company's first-ever fully dedicated electric vehicle and the #ID4DualMotor is the AWD version that offers twin electric motors, 295 HP, and up to 250 miles of range. Trying to decide between the #ToyotaRAV4Prime and #VWID4 is going to come down to whether you want a #PHEV or a fully electric vehicle. Both cost about the same and offer similar amounts of power and speed.

We just got not long ago the Rav4 Prime and it’s is in my opinion a better car ! We love its smooth ride a lot ! Of course it’s plug-in hybrid advantage over others. Ours comes with weather packages which it’s convenient in cold weathers.
Keep in mind that we’re coming from driving Lexus GX 460’s .. $150 dollars monthly saving in gas . I believe $14 dollars is all we’ve spent in gas lately with RAV4 . It could be $0.00 but I hear it’s recommended not driving car only on electricity but combined gas-Electricity it’s recommended. Some experts say you can drive car on electric only but not for more than 6 months so we decided to combined both cycles and make sure engine it’s not affected .
I highly recommend the RAV4 Prime ! If you could get into the one winch offers charging time in 4-6 hours much better ! Ours takes to fully charge battery about 12 Hours . It’s not something bad just long time . However, we leave car charging at 6:00Pm and at 6:00am when we’re ready to leave to work we unplugged it . Very simple ! I highly recommend the one RAV4 charging time takes only 4-6 hours for those who are driving more .
Our average electric driving only is 42 miles . That’s it’s good enough for us that just drive less than 14 miles every day.
Hope my comments helps. Sorry for my English/

How many vehicles give you power seats on BOTH sides? Yes, VW seats are much better than the Toyota. I got rid of my Subaru because of the front passenger seat. No adjustments other than up and back. No lumbar. No oil changes in the VW. The only thing you have to do is take care of the tires for service. Waiting for the Audi Q4 ETRON. On the VW chassis, with different look. Not in the US as of now. Lots more EV’s coming out in the next couple years.

We own two Rav 4 Primes and we had installed a level 2 charger in our garage and from empty 4.5 hours and we can charge both daily with one charger and we go 6 months on one tank of gas except on vacations which is a plus not looking for EV charge stations.
Five minutes to fill the gas tank beats charging on a road trip.

  • @themanthemyththebanger
    @themanthemyththebanger 2 года назад

You said it seems a little bit silly to compare a PHEV to a full EV, but it's not at all. An awful lot of us in America live in very rural areas where useful public charging infrastructure is still several years away. Even small college towns like my nearest "micropolitan" area have vanishingly few public chargers that actually work properly.
The thing I always think back to is when my son broke an arm and the local bone doc said he needed to go to a trauma center 100 miles away because the required surgery couldn't be done locally. I had already driven him to school (17 miles) and myself to work (7 miles). Then I drove home for lunch (10 miles) before heading back to work and getting the phone call en route from my son's school nurse saying I needed to come get him. So there's another 17 miles, then 7 more miles back to town to the doctor who ultimately tells us we need to drive 100 more miles at interstate speeds. I was reviewing an Infiniti Q60S Red Sport 400 and was able to fill it in 5 minutes, then set the cruise to 90 mph once I got on the interstate, getting us to the children's hospital E.R. in a little over an hour.
Most EVs would be extremely taxed in that situation, perhaps even running out of energy before the trip was finished. And even then, I would have needed EV charging infrastructure at or near the hospital so we could go home the following day, post-surgery.
Is it an outlier case? Obviously. But this is the nation where people buy three-row SUVs because they might need to haul 6 or 7 people someday (and then they never do, and the rear seat stays folded to increase cargo space its entire life). This is the country where people daily-drive 1-ton diesel pickup trucks because they go to Lowe's every few years to buy supplies for a home improvement project or because they pull a fishing boat or small utility trailer a couple of times a year. We're sold the image of the American as rugged individualist who must be ready for whatever comes in our future, so we perpetually over-buy supplies (including cars) when our day-to-day needs seldom require the fullness of their capabilities.
While I detest the number of huge trucks and SUVs on our roads, I am obviously not immune to the fear-based consumer logic that drives a lot of people into those space- and fuel-inefficient choices. In the foreseeable future, my family would be better served with a PHEV if we sold our ICE cars. Or, more likely, we'll be keeping at least one old ICE as a long-distance/emergency use vehicle while we transition to EVs for daily commuting.
So all that to reinforce that no, it's not silly at all to compare these two. While my Tennessee residency (the ID.4 will soon be built in Chattanooga) and environmental sensibilities make me want the VW, the RAV4 Prime would be cross-shopped if, say, I hit a deer that totals my car or a storm blows a tree over onto it, thus removing my "backup" ICE option. So I appreciated this comparison quite a bit. Thank you for filming it!

Considering my local, the Prime would be my 1st choice. I do not have nearly any electrical infrastructure close enough to rationalize such a purchase regarding the ID.4. Both vehicles should perform very well, it's just a matter of your priorities
The Rav4 will have a much more basic, cheaper interior, but will have the quality much more sorted, plus stellar resale value. The ID.4 will have a much more upscale attractive cabin, but the quality and issues will crop up, as Sofyan mentioned in the video. This is VW's first real swing at scale making battery-powered vehicles. Toyota is just ramping up hybrid-powered vehicles to the next level. VW has more of a diesel history than a strong hybrid history, so they are rushing to catch up to this part of the market. with their quality history, you are taking a risk.
I like the VW design and interior better, and on a lease, the VW may work, but the Toyota is built right for a long-term relationship.

A small aside, but for the 0-60 test, putting the Rav4 Prime in Hybrid mode will actually dial down the electric motors in favor of the engine for the acceleration curve. If you leave the car in Auto EV, it will prioritize the electric motors and supplement with the engine, which results in far better alpha acceleration, torque, and 0-60 time overall!

@@gordonschiff3621 Except there's no VW engine or transmission to worry about anymore, just the electrical system.

Yup! It was originally meant for the Mach E we bought and it’s been moved to that vehicle already :)

I don't think VW limits the power to 30mph to "mimic" an ICE, I think it is there to help the lifespan of the drive train.

I suspect you're correct. I know there were some issues with BMW i3's breaking drive axles. And there've been some other electrics having that same issue. Just a lot of torque at a low speed.

The ID.4 looks NOTHING like a minivan. It looks like the future, whereas the RAV4 looks like the past.

The RAV4 Prime all day. Toyota pioneered the modern hybrid and perfected it, and they aren't known to rush new technologies. The Prime looks nicer, is based on a proven vehicle, and will last as long as you could possibly want with basic maintenance. The ID.4 is trying to bluff a full house with ace high in that the only advantage is being all electric. EDIT: (And they only went full electric on an accelerated schedule because their reputation is still in ruins after Dieselgate)

VW has plenty of experience with the Egolf from 2015-18 and the ID.3 that was launched a few years ago. They also have more advanced EV tech with the Audi Etron and Porsche Taycan. And who cares about dieselgate? So what, VW was trying to make their cars more powerful and fun to drive, I dont hate them for that. You think the battery packs in an EV or Hybrid are any less harmful for the planet? Toyota is stuck in the past with their hybrids that no one will care about in 5 years. VW will be leading the pack soon enough.
