The default 3.3kw charger is pathetic. The 6.6kw charger should be the default and the enhanced version should be higher like 10kw charger in the premium package.
I bought a Miata and then I saw your review on it.... Like five years ago, the ND of corse... Then years later I see this test and I just ordered one Toyota Rav4 XSE Premium. You like it and I probably will like like it too.... Keeping the Miata though... Keep up your amazing work! I really like your reviews!
pretty cool... u get the horsepower and 0-60 equivalent to their own V6, while still getting hybrid 4 cylinder MPG numbers and Toyota decided to put it in their best selling vehicle.
The horsepower will only be there if the vehicle is fully charged. If you drain the HV battery say by driving in mountainous terrain you will be chugging up that mountain with a really heavy base level Rav 4.
I think the plug-in hybrid powertrain is optimal at this point in time. It saves significant gasoline, but eliminates the three problems with full EVs: 1) range anxiety, 2) excessively-long charging times, and 3) finding working charge stations.
Robert Ehlers Range anxiety isn’t an issue with 250-350 mile EVs. However, it is absolutely an issue on road trips where DC charging infrastructure is still few and far between. I’d argue issues 1 and 2 are unfounded, or at least a byproduct of issue number 3. Taking a rest stop for 20-40 minutes after driving for 2-3 hours is not much of an inconvenience, and will usually fall in line with similar refueling, rest and food stops for gasoline powered vehicles on long trips. We recently tested my assumption using a Niro EV. In all charging scenarios we didn’t feel as if we were waiting for charging to complete. The last stop happened to be at a 50 kW station and indeed needed 40 minutes to make it home, but after eating lunch and visiting the restrooms we were juiced up enough to make the last leg. Planning is most definitely necessary at this point, at least around DC fast chargers. But as more stations arrive planning will subside.
I would definitely prefer rav4 prime over tesla model Y anytime, because (1) Toyota's proven reliability over decades (2) Zero range anxiety, whatsoever (3) Class leading hybrid component and battery warranty. So even though its not as fun to drive as a Tesla, this will be my proffered cup of tea for daily commiting.
My wife doesnt want a tesla but i think this will be the perfect compromise of the green tech I want and the feel of a standard car she wants. thanks so much for the review
I just got a RAV4 XLE, the car is great. But......... I gotta use my phone’s flashlight to be able to find the lock buttons..... even my 2002 Lexus has lighting on the lock buttons...... come on Toyota
Why does everyone throw around the $7500 tax credit as if it's a guaranteed coupon against the price of the car? That's not how it works from my understanding. You'd have to have a tax liability of $7500 to get that credit from the Fed. If you have a tax liability of $1000, then that's all you get. In my mind it doesn't automatically make this car cheaper...
0:54 Good try but you're wrong on that one. The 2008-2012 Crown Hybrid was the first Toyota badged hybrid vehicle with a performance orientation and could get to 60mph in 5 seconds or thereabouts.
Correct, sounds like a unique car but he probably never heard of it, I never heard of it until now. Mainly because I think it mostly sold overseas in any numbers, not here. I can't find how many Crown Hybrid cars were produced, but you're right, it had similar performance to Prime as he referenced 5.4 from a Car and Driver test. Per Wikipedia: "Crown Hybrid has been estimated to take 5.4 seconds due to the additional power of the hybrid motor."
'12 Toyota camry se with ~133k. Growing family, wife has '16 Honda crv with 70k. Probably gonna need a new car in 4-5 years anyways. Trying my hardest to find this car asap. This is definitely the first of MANY these to come to the market. No gas mode for most of people's daily commutes, suv, and the hp and torque all of us crave but most sacrifice on. The interesting balance battle to watch will be the demand of them versus how much in total incentives the gov is willing to give.
I have to say Toyota has been on a roll with the current crop of products and I love how they are capitalizing on the hybrid market. I hope they eventually Prime all of there models. 🙌🏾🙌🏾
I'm hearing Toyota got you covered on the Hybrid battery up to a 150 thousand miles on this RAV4 that's nice you don't got to worry about the price of replacing a hybrid battery in a while
Very nice vehicle, fwiw test driving a Tesla I was still noticing build quality issues. And this feels like it will be more reliable in the long run, although time will tell on that.
My limited came with 19” wheels. Why every reviewer say this is the first to have 19s? Even in your review of the Adventure trim you mention the 19” wheels it comes with, haha.
@@normt5463 Agreed on battery driving, you need to run the gasoline engine, gasoline gets stale after awhile and any gasoline engine needs to be run regularly. Owners manual states to fill about 5 gallons every 6 months, way too long with old gas in tank in my opinion. But still great mileage and awesome performance.
My record is 54 miles on EV mode so far and for my second tank of gas I filled up with 90 octane with no ethanol in case I don't take any longer trips for a while but likely a tank of gas every 2-3 months seems to be what I'm going to average at this rate.
You're so right...we are going to use our Waze or Google Maps or Apple Maps instead of the car's inferior GPS. Can you ask someone at Toyota or Honda or any other car maker when our phone's turn-by-turn directions will be in the HUD (Head Up Display)?
Now I really want one. Love the exterior design and acceleration. Not perfect but Toyota just dropped the mic on luxury and non luxury brands! 🎤 Also, this proves Toyota's R&D power as they achieved solid fuel efficiency and power with modern batteries and not just a small engine with a turbo like everyone else
the two panels on the front bumper are tow hooks. Check the VIN, probably starts with J which means is was manufactured in Japan. Is my understanding that tow hooks in the front bumper are only on the vehicles manufactured in Japan.
Imagine if Toyota built a 400+ horsepower TRD Camry with the 3.5 Liter V6 paired with the same electric motors as the RAV4 and Had AWD, with 0-60 in mid 4 seconds, that would be a dream car
Uhh , you are forgetting the 3.5l rav 4 sport Toyota made until 2012 model year. 0-60in the mid 6 seconds.. we had two. Have been waiting for a sporty rav ever since. That was was not built for comfort
I've got a deposit down to get one of these in late January 🤞🏻so I've been reading and viewing a ton of reviews. This was one of the best I've seen. Great job! 👍🏻 Trading in a Honda Clarity. Been a very nice car, but can't wait to get ahold of the RAV4 Prime. Been a while since I've been this excited for a new vehicle 🙂
Why are LED blinkers considered better ? Longevity? I am guessing here but I haven't changed bulbs in mine for 9 years on 2013 Prius V so I'm confused.
Deduct the 7.5k tax credit, and whatever your state is willing to kick in. In CA, up to 3.5k rebate, plus it gets you into the carpool lane solo and maybe city rebates for charging station. It's plenty comfortable without being luxury fancy, and a very fun car.
The Prime’s traction battery is under the floor of the cabin forward of the rear seat, not under the rear seat as stated by the reviewer. That is different from the standard Hybrid model layout. Only charging and electronics cooling equipment is under the rear seat. Also, the dash stitching is not faux as stated but actually done by hand on a machine - saw that in a video about the RAV4 factory in Canada.
@@tubetop123 Autopilot? Autopilot is nothing more than a suite of driving assist systems like every carmaker has. Tesla's system can't even stop for a large stationary truck right in front of it. Autopilot isn't a selling point. 10 cameras make no difference when there's other systems out there that works better. It has 10 cameras yet doesn't even have 360 degree parking camera view. Safest car? Says who? The model 3 scored 96% for front occupant protection in euro Ncap. The model y is a model 3. Now if you look at euro Ncap you'll see that there are many many cars that scored higher even cars like the Mazda CX30 which is smaller got 98%. The model 3 got 86% for child occupant protection. Most cars scored over 90%. So again, not safer. I don't know where you tesla nuts get your info from. Because someone told you so? Okay okay....listen I can fly you know.
And to think that Toyota was the first to bring a hybrid car to the market in 1997, look at how far they have came, surely hybrids and electric cars wouldn't be so widely adapted without Toyota. I personally don't like the cheap materials Toyota uses but I give them props for being the first and taking the short end of the stick so that we can have so many options today.
When saying how slow the old rav4’s were he forgot (or unaware of it) to mention the 3.5L V6 RAV4 which was pretty quick for it’s day with a 6 sec 0-60 and got mpg’s pretty close to the 4 banger.
Great vid as always, Sofyan! Slight nitpick - you don't need the apostrophe in the title, the plural form of 'hybrid' is just 'hybrids'. As for the Prime, I've had a deposit on one for eight months, so I think I might actually be able to get one this year. It addresses the only things I don't like about my 2019 RAV4 hybrid: more power and more all-electric range.
No one ever talks about the projected working life expectancy of these batteries, or the facilities put in place for the safe and eco-friendly disposal of those same batteries once they're no longer usable
Toyota guarantees the battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles, although anecdotaly I would expect them to last longer than that. When they do reach end of life, the batteries can be recycled. I believe Toyota actually pays scrapyards a couple hundred dollars to send the batteries in to be recycled. It isn't profitable to send something that valuable to a landfill, so there are pretty good incentives to keep these batteries out of landfills.
I’m sorry but this rav4 is in a league of its own. Sure some luxury plug-in hybrids may be faster , but they WILL NOT average anywhere close to 40 mpg once the main battery is depleted. I think the speed alone would be worth this over the stander rav4 hybrid. You still get a great efficient hybrid suv but have the speed if you need it. Plug you can plug it in and commute to work in full electric.
I bought my 2021 RAV4 Prime 4 weeks ago. The starter battery dead 3 times since then. Each time I brought to the dealer they found nothing wrong with the battery and the car had the latest software update. The second time I brought it in the charge the battery to full and the battery is dead in one week even with regular driving and nothing was on in the car when it was park. The dealer won’t replace the battery because according to their battery test, the battery was still good. I recommend don’t buy 2021 RAV4 Prime yet until they solve this problem. Very frustrating when you bought this top of the line beauty and it turn out to be a lemon. Very disappointed in Toyota and the way they handle to fix the situation. As of now Toyota engineer still don’t have a fix for this.
Since the RAV4 Prime has TSS 2.0, it will work very very well with openpilot, the more sophisticated and more hands-free (and open source) replacement for Lane Trace Assist!

I really like your reviews!
pretty cool... u get the horsepower and 0-60 equivalent to their own V6, while still getting hybrid 4 cylinder MPG numbers
and Toyota decided to put it in their best selling vehicle.
The horsepower will only be there if the vehicle is fully charged. If you drain the HV battery say by driving in mountainous terrain you will be chugging up that mountain with a really heavy base level Rav 4.
@@Robbie6298 as mentioned in the video, you can enter Charge mode to recharge the battery before any situation that you might need to use it.
I think the plug-in hybrid powertrain is optimal at this point in time. It saves significant gasoline, but eliminates the three problems with full EVs: 1) range anxiety, 2) excessively-long charging times, and 3) finding working charge stations.
Robert Ehlers
Range anxiety isn’t an issue with 250-350 mile EVs.
I would definitely prefer rav4 prime over tesla model Y anytime, because (1) Toyota's proven reliability over decades
(2) Zero range anxiety, whatsoever
(3) Class leading hybrid component and battery warranty.
So even though its not as fun to drive as a Tesla, this will be my proffered cup of tea for daily commiting.
And yeah, not to be forgotten the full federal EV credit ... 😉, which u cannot get in case of a Tesla.
Thanks for providing the traditional Sofyan pedal-to-the-metal demo - always enjoyable.
If I win the fantasy 5 lottery I would buy this in a heartbeat
Win the Fantasy 4 and a Mach-E!
loved that you went back to your beloved classic video format of walkthrough and then test drive.. thank you!!
@Shay Nabi I love how they post the price after potential savings 🤣
@Shay Nabi They list it as "potential savings"
I have enjoyed all of your videos on the Toyota Rav4, your approach is just exceptional and informative, thanks and keep up the great work!
I can see Hyundai coming out with an Optima Prime now.
Hmmmm how about Kia instead? But it's called the k5 now.
Haha, you win!
Hyundai is part owner of Kia so not a far fetched statement
Megatron!!
@@hanj31 Pretty far fetched because Optima is a Kia name... Not Hyundai.
I have to say Toyota has been on a roll with the current crop of products and I love how they are capitalizing on the hybrid market. I hope they eventually Prime all of there models. 🙌🏾🙌🏾

I like this car but i really hate CVT gearboxes. Would anyone who owns this or the normal hybrid describe how the manual box feels like?
Great looking car! Huge difference and improvement!🔥🔥🔥
I agree!!!!
I'm hearing Toyota got you covered on the Hybrid battery up to a 150 thousand miles on this RAV4 that's nice you don't got to worry about the price of replacing a hybrid battery in a while
They have that warranty for all their hybrid batteries 10 year/ 150k miles whichever comes first.
Hi Sofyan, great video! Any chance you’ll be reviewing the 2021 Cadillac Escalade some time soon?
302 hp in a RAV4? I wants!! Thanks, nice review Redline!!
Getting close to silkies there Sofyan. 😁 Great review once again.
Very nice vehicle, fwiw test driving a Tesla I was still noticing build quality issues. And this feels like it will be more reliable in the long run, although time will tell on that.
Redline has great camera work man. I’m always impressed by it
I heard the handling is "sloppy"...steering doesn't look very responsive?
Have you been in a modern day Toyota lately? They have never handled well.
My limited came with 19” wheels. Why every reviewer say this is the first to have 19s? Even in your review of the Adventure trim you mention the 19” wheels it comes with, haha.
No one drives exactly 42 miles on battery 7-days a week. Besides when it is cold Prime owners won't be seeing over 40 miles or hot with AC running.
Also, this proves Toyota's R&D power as they achieved solid fuel efficiency and power with modern batteries and not just a small engine with a turbo like everyone else
Well there's been similar things from Mercedes and BMW like the E300e and E300de. Plug in petrol and diesel hybrids.
Oh I’m sure Kia will come out with something better real soon
SDav21 Cost too much and fall apart
@@SDav21 But those are much more expensive
@@SDav21 those offerings never had the range that this has though. It's also the combination of the vehicle size, power and range which is unmatched
the two panels on the front bumper are tow hooks. Check the VIN, probably starts with J which means is was manufactured in Japan. Is my understanding that tow hooks in the front bumper are only on the vehicles manufactured in Japan.
Previously, you wouldn't dare try this in any RAV4. My AWD V6 RAV4, "Hold my beer."
V6 Rav4 owners have left the chat.
Huh? We're still here, lol
You mean "hold my joint"
How much improvement would putting a decent tire like a CrossClimate2 on it make to the handling/traction limitations?
Imagine if Toyota built a 400+ horsepower TRD Camry with the 3.5 Liter V6 paired with the same electric motors as the RAV4 and Had AWD, with 0-60 in mid 4 seconds, that would be a dream car
It will eventually happen, and it will probably be the 2.5+ awd electric. Maybe the avalon will be v6 hyrbid but not the camry. Not enough room
Daniel G Or Maybe Lexus ES, if Lexus wants the ES to be a worthy GS replacement, they need a ES v6 prime with over 400 horsepower
@@ARB0204 I don't get why you want 400 hp in front wheel drive cars. You realize you can't put that much power down.
@@singular9 They can fix that with a Rear biased AWD
Uhh , you are forgetting the 3.5l rav 4 sport Toyota made until 2012 model year. 0-60in the mid 6 seconds.. we had two. Have been waiting for a sporty rav ever since. That was was not built for comfort
Probably close to 1,000 lbs less too!
Undeniably the small SUV standard. These days you must have an electrified powertrain to be competitive.
Not a profit center when using two modes of propulsion. Much less costly to ha e a single one that is why this is dead this decade.
I've got a deposit down to get one of these in late January 🤞🏻so I've been reading and viewing a ton of reviews. This was one of the best I've seen. Great job! 👍🏻
Trading in a Honda Clarity. Been a very nice car, but can't wait to get ahold of the RAV4 Prime. Been a while since I've been this excited for a new vehicle 🙂
Best of luck, I've been driving mine for a couple months, so fun to drive, you're going to love it!
I think you will be disappointed the late model RAV4 is one of the cheapest RAV4's every.
U have the prime already?
Great video Soyfan! I would love to see a Highlander Prime.
Very thorough and informative review. Thanks, Sofyan. Keep up the good work, Redline Reviews.
Good luck finding one this year
We love your videos, always get detailed info for cars. Thanks
17:39 that BMW must wondered if a new RAV4 has been that fast.
Why are LED blinkers considered better ? Longevity? I am guessing here but I haven't changed bulbs in mine for 9 years on 2013 Prius V so I'm confused.
Awesome will never need gas in City n no stop charging for long distance. I need to save up buy one. Thank you for the great review 👍🍻
Thank you for going back to your previous way of reviewing. It definitely flows a lot better
So out the door you hitting 50 grand +....ouch. A great put together hyrbrid for sure, but damn that's a high price threshold for not-a-lexus! X-D
Mr. 47 Don’t know about you but I’m not spending 50k for an outdated car. There’s other reliable brands
But it qualifies for a $7500 tax credit so.........
If I hadn't gone with the Model Y, I would've tried for one of these.
But you didn't though so....#Toyota4Lyfe
Try going back... To anything ICE. Bet you won't.
Tried one with dinosaur juice?
Full disclosure. I also have cars that run on dinosaur juice but I can’t wait to change that.
You must be joking right? Autopilot, 10 cameras, PIN to drive, free updates , robotaxi safest rated car
This is not the first time they’ve had 19’ wheels on a RAV4...The Adventure has 19’s as well, unless he’s maybe talking about generation?
I believe about generation i would think.
When saying how slow the old rav4’s were he forgot (or unaware of it) to mention the 3.5L V6 RAV4 which was pretty quick for it’s day with a 6 sec 0-60 and got mpg’s pretty close to the 4 banger.
Toyota Rav4 Prime TRD should be with an off-road kit and the camry v6 engine made to 4 electric motors now lol
That seems like a 400hp model X killer
@@TheGozzila The top end Model X has well over 700hp...
I’m a Tesla advocate but I will have to get real and acknowledge that Toyota has been letting Tesla play... for now.
Based on what??? Toyota doesn't get to decide what anyone else does. And I highly doubt that a Model 3 owner will dump it for a RAV 4.
With the poor built quality of Tesla and their shitty reliability, think more and more will choose to buy the prime
YS LEE there reliability has gotten a tad better due to consumer reports
Damn, I’d love to own one of these. Much more better and safer then diving straight to an all electric car (cough Tesla).
Safer?
If you've got range anxiety with 300+ miles and access to the Supercharger network, then yeah stick with hybrids.
Did Toyota fix the fueling issues (saddle fuel tanks will not fill to capacity)?
