We have the prius prime and a 5 mile drive to work. Just over 2 years and on our 3rd tank of gas.
That's sick.
from time to time you should spin that gasoline motor just to ensure gasoline does not corode certain parts; depending on the gasoline type you are using.
@@cristianbotiza3971 if it's like the volt, it will run the gas engine to maintain itself even if it doesn't need to use it.
Hahahaha.
Can’t cycle to work?
4 vehicles in one: AWD Crossover, Daily driver, Super-efficient hybrid, and Performance vehicle
(Car & Driver got 5.4 second 0-60 time)
Toyota gives you a lot for about $40k
Plus it'll still work in 25 years time.
@Ces K Wrong.
@Ces K wrong. Toyota warranty 10 year 250k
@Ces K people still drive 90s priuses. Nobody is buying a $8000 or whatever battery for a $2000 car - people just rebuild these batteries on the cheap. Shitty rebuild lasts a year or two, good rebuild that replaces every last one of the battery modules lasts almost as long as a new battery, while costing several times less.
I want this Rav4 Prime. If I had the money - I'd get one immediately. It's really just a larger, higher clearance, cool, straight looking Prius Prime - and I do love the idea of having a prius prime.
Ces K nope, if it was a regular hybrid, your point would be more valid. If your daily commute is under 80 miles, you could run on 100% electricity everyday and not spend a single penny on gas (if you charge your car at work and home). You would save 10k in 5 years time, so definitely worth.
The Rav4 Prime is simply the goldilocks vehicle! Enough electric range for city commute and near 600 mile range for long trips
And you cannot get one unless you were one of the lucky 5,000 who pounced. How cool is that!
@@dan_hitchman007 that sucks i know the pandemic would effect it but only 5,000?! That's too low
It will go much farther than 600 miles. I can do 600 on my 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid (not kidding!).
@@dan_hitchman007 I found out about the Prime by looking on RUclips a year ago after local dealers were trying to gouge me for 5k over sticker for a 2020 rav 4 hybrid LTD. I bought this at sticker with 11k in credits and rebates and do consider myself lucky. Another thieving local dealer has 2 on lot, marked up 10k over sticker.
@@attackroflchopter4403 Yeah, probably in two or more years. Just like the new F-150 that has a base battery of only 200 miles per charge and a $40,000 starting MSRP. They're show pony vehicles to meet California eco standards. There is a severe battery and lithium element shortage that won't be solved soon.
The more i watch this the more i want this Prime, thanks for the video!
Unfortunately, we are going to have a very long wait because of the limited number of vehicles that they will be sending to the United States and just about everywhere else. 🤦♂️
Most places this is a VERY limited model. The U.S. allotment is sold out.
I'm sitting here wishing this came in the Highlander 😩
Me too
It's way too popular and functional for them to ever make a lot of them. Expect it to be discontinued and replaced with something awful soon.
PHV is best because you can feel ev-acceleration, no range anxiety, long travel use, fuel efficient, several minutes of fueling (and only a few hours of charging if you like). Perfect.
But you are also hauling a gas engine, electrical motors, a tank of gas and a heavy battery. It weights 400kg more than rav4, 250kg more than rav4 hybrid, 150kg more than model y. Long distance gas economy isn't that good.
@@wgemini4422 it's pretty darn good. 600 miles on full charge and full gas.
@@-a-8423 I can never understand why people confuse range with efficiency.
Toyota: Makes something desirable
Also Toyota: Doesn’t produce enough to meet demand
I hate when companies do this. It's called artificial scarcity, I believe, and it's such a punch in the gut to consumers.
Can you give them a minute?
@@WirableCrown1 Punch in the gut? Nothing says you have to buy it! Besides I wouldn't blame them on this one, the Prius Prime didn't have that good of a reception but it only offered about 20 miles. Plus it isn't a Rav4. People wonder why the Prius' sales are going down it's because it's ugly and Toyota started hybridising (is that a word?) the Camry and others.
Extremely thorough and well-explained. Thanks for the informative and interesting video, Tommy. Nice work, TFL.
I just drove my 2013 Chevy Volt 175 miles from Mapleton, Ut to Bear Lake Ut thru Wyoming over mountains. There and home again I averaged 52 mpg. 80 of those miles were 100% electric (40 each way). No range anxiety. Normal weeks we rarely if ever use gasoline.

17:35 it’s 89 miles per gallon. You’re welcome.
That's really good for a midsize SUV. Also 71miles minus 30 EV uphill so 41 divided by .8gals is 51mpg mostly down. They would have had over 100 E-mpg if started full battery and used ev-auto. Because that would turn on gas during harder working times because it's actually more efficient than accelerate on gas. Then the car would be in EV way more miles.
Wow! I’ll be lucky to get 29 mpg in my car🥴

My Toyota RAV4 prime XSE is amazing. I was able to get 50 miles of all electric range. Thumbs up, Toyota.
Per gallon or range?
@@davidcobarruvias4185 That would be range on electric.
Plug-in hybrids it's the way to go.............EV range enough for daily use...and the ICE for the long trips.
I wish another manufacturer would take the idea of an i3, but with a larger battery pack and slightly larger fuel tank. Maybe 200 miles of EV range + 150 miles of gas range, all wrapped up in something the size of a 3 series
If you plan to operate it on EV mode most of the time, the gasoline-powered engine system will degrade over time. Gasoline is volatile and will absorb moisture, so if it is bot depleted on a regular basis, it gets stale. Have you tried to start up a lawnmower that has been sitting in a shed for a long time?
@@korswe That's not how that works. The i3 and Volt both force a maintenance cycle that runs the motor to burn off gas, and then require you to refill with some fresh gas afterwards.
Andrew Holst. Good point. However, running some sort of a maintenance program to burn off stale or would-be-stale gasoline wouldn’t run long enough for the ICE to get hot enough to keep the valves. I know it’s a four banger with both port and direct injection, but you still need to run the engine hot for a long period of time. I’ve serviced many engines before. Customers with lots of city driving tend to more issues with everything than freeway drivers.
@@korswe you're forgetting two things...with an hybrid, you could go on long road trips and refresh the gas...an hybrid even with a degraded battery pack, still moves around.

Exactly.
Tip, if you have a prime, don't ever fill it up full unless you are doing a long trip. keep it half full or 1/4.
Nice job on the video Tommy...it's a nice car the RAV4..lots of em here in Ontario
Tommy, excellent review from the standpoint it encompasses the same day to day driving for most of us. We live in a small community and drive very little throughout the week. With the range demonstrated we would be EV all the time and charge on the night of day 3. The Hybrid would kick in on 300 Mile Road trips into the Interior Mountains. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for making this review. This vehicle is fantastic!
Solid review. Thanks dude. Researching my next purchase.
Cool video, lots of good information.
The charge battery button can be handy if you're going to be taking a interstate drive and then doing some city driving after that. You could leave with a full charge press that button and the car I believe will maintain battery charge and run mostly in a hybrid and gasoline mode. If you're going to be running down the interstate for 200 miles you're going to be running the gasoline engine anyway. So in certain circumstances that could be an efficient way to then drive on all electric at your destination city.
I see what you are saying and get it that recharge mode is best for those that run 70+ mph and darting in and out of traffic and simply trying to get where you need to go in a hurry and or travel and keeping up with faster traffic but once you hit traffic jam and or stop and go traffic well you are set with a ev mode or even if it is a fast pace traffic area and then you get to a slower part of a highway like 60-70 for a good stretch that you can go into ev mode
Loved this video. Thank you. Am going to buy one but will wait a year or so until the kinks are worked out before I spend the big bucks. Bought a ‘97 then a ‘10 V6 , then a ‘16 Hybrid. You know I am going to need a plugin.
Great review Tommy, very interesting and useful. I purchased the RAV4 Prime last weekend, awaiting plates and delivery.
Great review! I like the 0 to 60, and that this hybrid maintains its acceleration, by keeping the electric drivetrain on-line.
I’m going to trade my Tesla for one of these. Hello reliability and ease of service, goodbye range anxiety in winter and shitty customer service.

Toyota’s service is easier than Tesla’s?
Pretty amazing numbers for an SUV with no range anxiety!

I love this review, well done guys
You can log some incredible MPG on these PHEV's for sure. I can easily get 150mpg in my Honda Clarity PHEV when I'm commuting back and forth to work and don't completely drain the battery.
Wow impressive
Yo what the heck that's stupidly insane lol
Love watching these trips and figuring out your route. Office to Longmont to Lyons to Nederland back to your office is my guess.
Pretty close! Office - Longmont - Lyons - Ward - Office
Thanks a lot. I am considering getting one of this so your info is helpful. 1. It's a Toyota, which means reliability and very little trouble maintainance wise. 2. An EV. 3. A gas car. 4. A hybrid. 5. A daily commuter. 6. An SUV, near mid-sized. 7. A quiet place, even when driving. 8. Eco friendly.
Absolutely incredible. I used to wonder what the point of phev vehicles was but realizing that you can make your daily commute without using any fuel is so cool. And having the flexibility to go on long road trips without the hassle of long charge stops is the real seller. There’s absolutely zero reason to buy all electric when you can have the best of both worlds
I saw a PEARL WHITE with the Black TOP....it was beautiful also. I really REALLY want one, but no luck...
Hybrid cars have one thing in common with diesels, you have to drive it enough miles to make it worth the investment.
Hahaha, another person referring to a car as an investment. Its not a FORD GT. You will lose money when you buy a car.
Bill Bunt $7,500 federal tax credit helps even out those numbers.
Electricity rates are much more stable than gasoline
I heard that a lot when we bought our 2002 Prius. 200K miles later it has way more than paid for the difference (almost $5000 in those days.) It has consumed roughly 4000 gallons at an average price around $2.50 per gallon, or $10,000 in gasoline. If it were not a hybrid it would be hard pressed to do better than 25 mpg, being mostly in-town miles. At 25 mpg it would have consumed about $20,000 in gasoline.
Saving $10,000 on a $20,000 car not good enough? Besides consumables: tires, wiper blades, 12V batteries (three of them) and a windshield, all it has needed beyond routine maintenance was a $150 inverter coolant pump I spent a couple hours replacing. I never had a car that had cost less than $500 per year, doing my own work.
@@flagmichael The resale value, i imagine is a lot hire. my point is you will lose money, but you can lose a lot less of it.
@@nerdlywehunt I wish petrol was 2 bucks per here, we get humped with gas tax here in CA that puts us over 3 per gallon, and that tax will keep rising. I wanted a bigger, higher car that would be better to take camping. I bought the Prime because of the fuel mileage, but also because of the performance.
great review tommy.hope we get this version in australia.our galleons are slighty bigger 4.5 litres, which works out to be 108 mpg, wow.
Just picked up mine. 2 month wait. No dealer markup. Next year I’ll refill. By the way, the batteries last longer at city speeds vs freeway. And with half the battery gone, it takes only 5 hours on 110v to recharge. Lovin’ it….
I love the Toyota RAV4 great video
Finally! An EV option that actually fits my lifestyle that causes no range anxiety. Good job Toyota and Tommy.
My girlfriend bought the regular hybrid version. Great SUV, sharp looking, and gets 38mpg! Love it. Only complaint is metal is flimsy (extra light with lots of give) and takes a long time to wash.
you can use the charge mode while going downhill to produce enough charge back in town to avoid hybrid mode. Its still more efficient than running in hybrid mode around town since you can use the engine to help charge the battery optimally instead of using it for stop and go traffic later (if that makes sense)
Curious about the AWD performance in snow and responsiveness in general. I am really surprised what my 2017 RAV4 can do, that wheel lock mode has come in handy a bunch of times.
This car still amazes me, it's almost a no compromise in my opinion, it's quick, has amazing mpg, has AWD, unlike the escape, can sit 4 or 5 comfortably, this is amazing to me in an SUV
Great test n review
great test, a really sensible review of real world driving, my 2006 2.2L Diesel RAV gets 37mph (us gallon) so finally a Hybrid is out performing it in every way, hopefully the U.K. will have some stock soon :)
I would be interested to know how the end result is effected by adding in the cost of electric used to top up the battery back to the same level as the start as this is also a fuel used to transport the vehicle over this test. I was the owner of a PHEV and it was so annoying when the cost of charging the battery was never mentioned or included in running costs as it gives a false m.p.g. to prospective buyers. The cost should be converted to amount of fuel it be and added to the fuel used and the combined figure to give a True m.p.g.
13:26 should've compared with other hybrids on braking/re-gen.
Great video! Would love to see one of these on your rollers to see if the e-AWD is any better than the Prius was.

2500 lbs according to Toyota! This thing is perfect for me.
Yes please!!!!
Electrical cars have phenomenonal torque plus CVT no gearbox . So electromagnetic power convertion no clutches. These cars are truly high tech .
I drive a Pacifica PHEV, and I love it. This video shows what I really love about PHEV's. Any time you let off the throttle or gently press the brake, the vehicle is using the electric motor as a generator and pumping energy into your battery. FREE FUEL!!!!!!! I've driven without plugging in before and even without any charge in the battery, on a 100 mile round trip to L.A. it drove 30% on battery and averaged 31mpg. So in essence it produced free fuel, which it used for 30% of the drive. With gas prices in So. Cal. Averaging over $4.50 a gallon, I'm loving this PHEV. Plus it's saving on brakes and the engine is actually only being used less than 40% of the time while I plug it in, less need for oil changes and maintenance on the ICE engine. Theoretically at 100,000 miles the engine will have only driven about 40,000 miles and almost all of those are highway miles with NONE of them sitting there idling. I would think that PHEV RAV 4 would make an AWESOME Police cruiser.
I wish people would stop saying, “when the battery dies,” when they mean “runs out of EV range.” The battery doesn’t die, it hits a buffer zone that forces gasoline to be used until charging is convenient and keeps the battery in a healthy state of charge.
Does the Petrol Engine actually drive the wheels or does it charge the Batteries that drives the wheels ?
Tommy. You are the Man. The star of TFL. You make the best videos.
Well presented and useful.
66MPG sounds good but my car was paid for 18 years ago and gets 36 HWY. Insurance is $21/mo. Registration $120.
Wish you tested it in Auto EV/HV mode, as I think that’s how most will use it when they know they are going beyond the electric range
It might not make much difference. I have a Prius Prime, and if the battery is charged and the engine is cold, EV auto mode is almost identical to EV mode.
Love our Rav4 Prime. When it's convenient to charge you charge and save in gas. If charging isn't convenient you run on gas while charging the battery. Our battery was at zero miles. We drove to church on gas and drove home on electric. Beyond that it's a fun car to drive.

But seriously, Toyota heavily underestimated the demand for this car.
They didn’t underestimate anything. Common sense would tell them they could easily sell 10X the 5,000 they allocated to the US. They are not new to car manufacturing and sales.
They just didn’t want to sell many for some reason. Either because it a compliance vehicle being produced at a loss and they want to only sell the minimum possible or else because they are just using it as an experiment and don’t want to risk technical/mechanical issues dragging down their average reliability ratings if it was sold in mass quantities.

damn i did not know that
Only 5k. Thats literally nothing when the rav4 sells 100s of thousands a year. I wonder where electric cars will be when they cant get the materials anymore
To complete the energy consumption figures you also need to charge the car to the level before the trip and add that energy(or its cost) to the gas consumption to give a total cost in cents per mile.
Exactly right, Dude. You nailed it. I did a rough calculation for my area. Electricity per killowatt hour costs .13 cents. If the battery is an 18 killowatt hour battery, it costs $2.34 to charge it from zero to full. He drove 71 miles using one gallon of gas. If you add on the $2.00 for electricity, the savings are practically nothing.
Nick V BUT if you have free charging at work or where you shop it helps the bottom line. Many free level 2 charging points around! Probably not worth going out of your way to charge though.
InternetDude Thanks to the VW diesel emissions lawsuit there are free level 2 chargers in the parking lot of my employment.
@@InternetDude Free charging or not, this friggin car costs $20K more than the regular Rav4. Don't you think that should be factored in here? If your buying the Prime to save money, you've made a huge mistake.
Nick V I don’t care overly about the cost, it’s the principle.
One thing that is difficult to quantify about a hybrid or PHEV is how quiet they are in city driving. When I'm in stop-and-go traffic during rush hour with my Avalon Hybrid or even the Ford Fusion hybrid I rented on a trip, the silence that comes from a car running on electricity rather than a gas engine helps ease my anxiety. I am glad that Toyota made a PHEV version of the RAV4 because a platform like that has plenty of room to hide a large battery while still leaving room for a decent amount of cargo.
Wow. It is amazing how this showed up on my timeline because I just decided today around 4 PM to buy my mother in law a Rav 4. Because of the synchronicity I sub
Tommy, very good video and description of the RAV4 Prime. I think that the gas mileage should be based on the miles driven using the gas engine. Also you should calculate the cost to recharge the batteries. that would be the total cost of the trip. Also include the time to charge the batteries. TFL has done comparisons like that in the past. I get that you had limited time for the test. I think that would be a fairer comparison. When testing hybrids or electric vehicles TFL should set up a standard test for the best comparison. We rely on you guys to give us the best fair comparisons as well as being fun to watch. You guys do a great job! thanks again for a great video!
The Chevy Volt of CUVs...
wow Tommy, you have got relly good at reviews since your first one.
Great video Tommy. I’m in the process now of locating one to buy since they don’t sell them in my state of VA! Selling my TESLA model 3 for this, and also havre a Kia Niro PHEV that gets 26 EV miles, which my son uses for school that is 12 miles each way. It has 2000 miles on it and we’ve only used one tank of gas! Toyota needs to make more than 5000 this upcoming year! It’s a winner!
Your MPG needs to calculate the cost of recharging the battery, no?
Or just the energy use. The way they did it doesn’t make sense, because the car runs on more than just gas. If you drive 20 miles in a plug-in hybrid that goes 30 miles on a charge, you didn’t just get infinity/undefined MPG. The spirit of MPG in this context is fuel economy, and it most certainly used some fuel (even if it was just electricity from the battery).
why? Toyota Hybrids are self-charging through braking and coasting.
@@markhoffman9655 its a plug in hybrid so you need to charge it as well
@@Bolero6879 You dont have to. If you dont it will operate as a hybrid.
True. most people assume that the electricity is so cheap or charge for free at work (any 120VAC outlet works) that they don't consider that. If you consider the cost to charge the 50% state of charge reduction you would be looking at an added $1.00 (assumes $0.15/KWh). So the effective MPGe would be lower than the 90 mpg indicated.
Notice that they indicate MPG and not MPGe, which would consider all costs , including the electric recharge. So on the east coast he would have paid $3.00 for the 0.8 gallons plus $1.00 for the electricity to return the car battery to the same starting level. You can calculate how much the hybrid mode total MPG he got. Do you thing is better than 50 MPG published? LOL. It is a super car. well done engineering. Toyota finally came out on all wheels with EV super designs. Finally they are moving away from hydrogen only cars that are going nowhere. People still remember the blowing zeppelins.
I'm not a fan of the current Toyota tail light design. Why do the brake lights only illuminate a small edge of the whole tail light?
@@AD-sp5cv That is one thing that continues to bug me about Toyota. I understand how using the minimum of X per vehicle saves on production cost and complexity but when it comes to things like tail/brake lighting that is not something you should skip on. Now I am not sure if it has changed for the Camry by now but I still remember how they had used 4 tiny little lights in the 3rd brake cluster for what seems like generations and I always thought that looked cheap and risky even especially when cheaper brands/cars used 6 or more elements or an LED strip with more brightness.
@myofficegoes65 I guess you haven't been paying attention that several manufacturers are going to smaller lighting. It's a modern look and it does the job.
@Fire Heart But a single stripe of led is way more visible than a small dot of led.
myofficegoes65 - That one thing that always bothered about Toyota vehicles. They have a big tail lights, but when the lights are lit is just a very small portion of all that acrylic that gets brightened. Some turn light signal on the Avalon is almost impossible to notice, especially during the day. That's one thing that I don't like about Toyota cars. For me is compromise of safety.
It’s illegal to have lights including break lights on a moving part of a vehicle (trunk that opens, door, hood etc.) that’s why they are not functional. Just for a looks
I'm getting one of these for sure ❤️
I love where technology is heading currently 😁
