      There working on it last year 2019 I talked to the Toyota rep at the car show. I told her in total the 4runner it at the U.S. government tax of $1k due to the 17 total mpg what are they going to do? She said they're working on electrifying the fleet at the time she knew the Sienna was coming first. No news as to yet(2019 then) but she assured me the 4runner is getting a look over for electric.
      It's just some slow people out there that can't see the possibilities that Tommy just showed us on the 4runner. However I'm waiting for it it's coming and it should be around $45 to $49k fully loaded for a TRD a sr5 $37-39k. They got to work on the mpg that's what's holding them up they're at 17 mpg that makes the price go up to $50k due to U.S. gov excessive fuel cost tax collection of the $1k. Plus they wanted to see how this Rav-4 prime would sell so it's coming since the Rav4 is sold out for 2020.

    Thanks for doing this test! There is still very little info on the Rav4 Prime's AWD capabilities, and this is impressive. It's obviously not in the same class for rock-scrambling as a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with a 4:1 low range transfer case and high-flotation tires, but it gets way better fuel economy than any Jeep or 4-Runner, and probably has a nicer, more comfortable ride on pavement. If you had been able to run this test with BF Goodrich TA/KO2's, or any other similar all-terrain tires, I wonder if the hill climb would have been more impressive, with less wheel slip?
    I've been driving a 2019 Prius Prime for the last 14 months, and am totally sold on the Toyota Prius power train technology. I run the car in EV mode on external battery charges as often as possible, and have managed an overall 159.1 miles per gallon of gasoline consumed in 12,500 miles. This car replaced a 2014 Subaru Outback that was getting only 27 mpg. The Prius Prime is costing me about 4 cents per mile, the Subaru cost 13 cents per mile. Quite a difference! I'd love to take a test drive in this Rav4, when they get the supply restrictions sorted out.
    UPDATE July 6, 2023. I've finally found one! It's a 2023 Rav4 Prime SE in Ice Cap Blue, without the moon roof package, so it'll have 2-1/2" more headroom than the car in this video. I'm taking delivery on July 18th, and I'm so excited! I've been looking for one since October 2020.

    TFL, Toyota needs to continue to beef up the rear motors on all their #AWD Hybrids to improve off-road/snow traction as well as everyday performance. Sending more power to the rear wheels will make these Hybrids better in every way. BTW the 2006-2012 V6 RAV4 remains the best of all time. If available on a current RAV4, today's 300 HP V6 would beat this Prime's acceleration and tow up to 5,000 lbs. At a minimum, Toyota could offer the current Highlander Hybrid's 243 hp powertrain in a RAV4 which would substantially increase the towing and performance.

  • @JJFLD
    @JJFLD 3 года назад +1

    Okay, here’s my thing. Unless I’m mistaken, the Prime uses the same 54 HP 89 LB/FT rear motor as the normal RAV4 Hybrid. So, I think it’s actually very smart to off road only in EV mode on this car because if it were in HV mode, I guarantee that the front wheels would be overloaded with power. EV is like a really great balance.

    • @RussellmaniaKW
      @RussellmaniaKW 3 года назад +1

      the problem is somewhere like in Denver where you're driving a bit to get to the mountains, you might not have enough charge to do much offroading in EV mode. You can conserve battery on the drive I guess, but that's kind of a bummer and once you're depleted you're not charging it in the mountains. I wish he had tested it in HV mode since that's probably the more practical scenario with this car.

    Very informative tests, congratulations! I watched almost all your tests related to the TOYOTA RAV4 Hybrid (rollers, fuel consumption, snow tires performance...), plus this test with PRIME. I noticed though that both the Hybrid and the PRIME made it on Tombstone Hill (both right and left slopes) although the PRIME was surely better. In my opinion the PRIME had better traction on the rear wheels (does better on rollers as well). As the rear motor has the same power/torque (not sure if it the same transaxle though) the difference may come from the improved software, or from the fact that the weight of the rear axle is superior on the PRIME because of the much heavier battery. What do you think?

      Absolutely no one off roading all electric TBH

    This is the best vehicle Powertrain format for most people for green energy for the foreseeable future. Plug in hybrid. Can drive all electric around town and to work. But go on a trip for 12 hours then engine can keep you going.

    Does it look like the wheel well would fit 16" or 17" wheels? Aftermarket wheels are super cheap and you can always sell the 18"s to RAV4 owners.

      yeah...all size wheels will fit just fine, I own a gray Prime just like the review car in the video.

    I wish you guys would run normal hybrid mode as well. I know there is this novelty in showing the electric only but as a car shopper I would like to see the capabilities of the entire system. You did the same thing in the Wrangler 4xe video. I want to see what it can do normally not what it does dragging half the drivetrain up the mountain.

    I know this will seem like a dumb comparison, but what are your thoughts on this vs the wrangler 4xe.
    Obviously the wrangler wins off road, but full package between the two what are your thoughts?

    it could be even better with two 100kw motors front and rear, 20-25kWh battery, and a small compact engine working only as a generator. It would maximize the efficiency when working as a hybrid, there could be even space for a frunk, and in theory would allow to transition the vehicle to BEV in the future.. But, I guess they prefer to sell you a PHEV now, and a BEV in the future.

    They need a mode where the motors spin one to one and simulated a fully locked vehicle

      To limit motors they first have to build individual tachometers for each wheel...so the computer can track wheel spin and match revolutions of each wheel to achieve something resembling locked "hubs" on 4x4's.

    Can you do a review of RAV4 Prime that shows towing capability - tent trailer/ small box trailer [dirt/road bikes], or open utility trailer. Also can a body kit be put on rav4 prime or bigger A/T tires ? This is a great functional video - hope the folks at Toyota pay attention. yes 19" wheels suck offroad. I suppose you could order smaller after market wheels to get more sidewall, but worried a bit about clearance with slightly bigger A/T tires. Can the Rav4 be lifted?

    You don't loose performance if the battery runs flat? Seems like TFL can test this! Run up the Ike Gauntlet, then run the battery flat and run the Gauntlet again.

    Wait, so is the Rav4 Prime's battery size 18.1 or 17.8 kWh? I've heard most sources said 18.1 kWh...

    pretty good video but why wouldn't you use off road tires vice street tires for testing off road, it may perform differently, it could perform better or worse. could you do a video with the rear seats down to show better the cargo capacity. I have 3 big puppies that use that area
