Nothing was left on to drain the battery. Had to jump start it. After jump staring it, i was able to drive it. I took it to the dealership and they said it was due to a known problem with 2 CPUs in both the Rav4 and Camry. This caused excessive battery drainage. They did updates to both CPUs. The car is working fine now, but who knows if it permanently fixed the issue. I'm so disappointed in Toyota. I guess no one makes strong reliable cars anymore.

Roman's points make absolutely no sense. Who buys a RAV4 for "excitement"? I'm pretty sure that buyers of RAV4's are people who find it a better alternative than vehicles of a similar size and style than the competition. If they wanted a more "exciting" car, they would not be in the market for a small, road-biased SUV with a battery like the RAV4. They might look at a Stelvio Quadrifoglio or one of Land Rover's hotted up SUV's, or a Dodge SUV with a big engine for an SUV with "excitement." All Roman did was once again ruin a review by bringing up things that have NOTHING to do with the features the vehicle actually has or was designed for. Instead of hearing those actual features, Roman wouldn't shut up about a subject clearly not addressed by the vehicle. Breaking News for Roman: Some people may have more practical interests in a vehicle, such as overall better gas mileage with some extra traction when needed, over strictly performance based indicators. It's okay for people to have those priorities over an obsession with speed and handling. Similar subject-Oh no, the Jeep Wrangler's 0-60 time is less than a Ferrari's! Let's just shut down the whole brand because it's clearly useless!

I think your dad is being a little harsh on the RAV4. Toyota not once, ever, marketed this car as a Porsche Macan so all the “it’s boring” comments are kinda confusing. That’s like making fun of a Corvette for not being practical.
The RAV4 sells well because it’s the zenith of an appliance lol. There’s a distinct version for almost everyone (regular LE, Limited, Adventure, Hybrid, and Prime) all have solid build quality and an interior that’s not too nice but not cheap either - perfect for families with kids. Most of all, they’re efficient and dependable. A CR-V is roomier, a Rogue has a nicer interior, a CX-5 drives better, a Cherokee is better off road, but a RAV4 does ALL of those things well enough while many of its competitors can’t do any AT ALL. That’s why it sells well.

My wife's 2020 Rav4 wouldn't start yesterday. It displayed a smart key system malfunction message. Shortly afterwards, the battery was dead.

My gf has a 2015 Rav 4 Limited. I hate the way it rides. Loud road noise and it feels like its dragging the ground. And it hits bumps and potholes hard. Very uncomfortable on long trips on the body and mind. Leather seats are hard. I have had much more comfortable and quieter ride in cars costing half as much. The brakes make noise when backing up. The motorized hatch lift gets stuck and you have to push the lift up to open it all the way. The steering wheel pleather is pealing. The infotainment screen does not respond to touch at the bottom of the screen. I am sure the 4 cylinder is very reliable but it has no guts. It does help a bit to drive in sports mode. I absolutely see nothing in the Rav4 or why people like it. The upper trims do not ride any better than the base models, you just get more options. Many people will buy Toyota for its reliability but I think today, there are much better cars for the money with almost the same reliability. In order to really make a review of a car on comfort, you have to drive the car for 8 hours straight. All those luxury options like heated seats and steering wheel means nothing if the ride sucks.

The non-hybrid RAV4s are having problems with rough-shifting transmissions, and very loud engine noises in the cabin. The hybrid versions of the RAV4 are quieter, have no transmission problems, get better mpg, however, they suffer from gas tank problems where the fuel tank can only get filled with 11 gallons of fuel instead of the normal 15 gallons. Something that Toyota says they are looking into, but cannot seem to fix just yet.

An automaker doesn't become the largest (or some years the 2nd largest) on the planet by building bad vehicles or lacking understanding of their customers want. The RAV4 isn't exciting but the proportion of compact SUV buyers looking for "excitement" is minuscule. All in all, scalding performance and handling worthy of a track day rank about 25th and 30th among their priorities.
I haven't driven the new RAV4 but I did have a day with a new Camry hybrid for a day while the family SUV was in for service. Quiet, smooth, and comfortable. Put about 150 miles on it in urban, suburban, and highway environments. And at the end of the day I put about 4 gallons of fuel in the Camry. That alone left me feeling good both in terms of my wallet and in terms of my values.
Wouldn't trade our family's KIA Sorento for the RAV4. I value the additional room in the KIA and its occasional use third row. And with hybrid and a PHEV versions of the Sorento coming soon I'd want to compare them to Toyota's offerings. And I wouldn't give up my GTI for almost any other vehicle. But I have to admit that 90% of the time and miles the hybrid Camry had charms of its own worth considering.
