Whatever the car is, you always manage to bring out aspects in your reviews that almost no other reviewer thinks to--particularly with regard to driving dynamics. For instance, for the Toyota RAV4 Prime, most other reviewers were content to mash the throttle, laud the acceleration, and maybe do some "real-world" testing of the EV-only range. Anyway, kudos.
Although not a fan of modern Toyota’s (my last Toyota was an ‘84 Supra), I still couldn’t think of a better way to start my day. Great review as usual👍
Great review! I think your more expansive vocabulary helped paint a good picture of the Prime for me. And this has also further convinced me that larger tires is almost a necessity for driving in Colorado. These things look mean with some 17" wheels and all terrains, and the small impact on efficiency feels worth it.
So glad Toyota sent you one of these. It is really on my short list and as much as I love Alex on Autos for all the details I really wanted to hear your take on how it handles. It would be an EV + highway cruiser for me. Your summary is spot on my use case.
The RAV4 Prime is the first hybrid that convinced me to look into hybrid-types vehicles. For me it looks like a no-compromise solution. It's even capable off-road, if you get the H3 version. For the price it seems to me as the best all-around vehicle you can get at the moment.
We have the V6 AWD version of the RAV4 and I just love it. With 150K miles so far I just can't get rid of it. In our household there's just my wife and me driving but we have 3 vehicles. We got the RAV4 when our son was born to haul all this baby stuff around. Now that's he's grown enough where we don't need to haul a bunch of baby stuff we really don't need it anymore but I just can't bring myself to sell it because I love the powerful V6 in a vehicle that size. I've had offers to buy it but I refused. Since we got the RAV4 we've had 2 turn overs of our cars (my wife is on her second car since the RAV4 and I'm on my second also). She has her car and I have mine and we basically share the RAV4. If I were ever to let go of our V6 RAV4 that is only to replace it with the RAV4 Prime but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I love my '12 V-6 Rav4. Plenty of power, small on the outside big on the inside. I'm 5' 11"and can comfortably sit behind myself with the driver's seat properly adjusted for me. I've filled the rear with over 500 lbs of sand (in sealed bags) no problem, it did smooth the ride out. The trans isn't anything special and I'd like a gear between 3 and 4. Third is a little low for around town cruising and 4th is a little too tall, 5th is ridiculous unless on the freeway. The 4wd hook is solid, even with the mediocre tires that came with it when I bought it. After this initial review it looks like I'll be keeping mine, with only 56K on the clock it's good for a long time.
@@realkarfixer8208 As I mentioned in another comment, I have never met a RAV4 V6 owner who was not happy with it. Compared to the base Generation 3 models, it had nearly 100 extra HP, 2,000 lbs more towing capacity and a fuel consumption penalty of only 2 mpg. That generation also has the back seat that slides back and forth and the hidden cargo compartment under the hatch so what's not to like? They should bring back the V6 for today's high priced RAV4 Adventure and TRD models and make everything else a traditional or plug-in Hybrid. Finally, where I live there is NO price premium for the V6 in the used market so it is a better deal than ever. Take good care of yours. :)
You have the best auto reviews! I MEAN i really both a Maita after your review.... We really needs a car which hauls around everything we need to our countryhouse and I believe this will be a good one! Ordered it and gope for the best! Anyway you have the best car reviews on the net! Keep it good!
My Camry handled like you describe with the factory Bridgestone tires. They inspired zero confidence new and went downhill quickly with just initial wear. I replaced them at 13,000 miles. I'm on my second set of Pirelli Cinturato P7s and it's an entirely different experience. This would probably be a great vehicle with a set of good tires on it.
Car and Driver got this off in even less than the stated Toyota specs. They did 0-60 in 5.4 secs. How is that not great for a SUV in this class? Anything faster would cost way more. You didn't seem to put it in Sport mode to get the fastest time.
Greatly appreciate you talking about the three modes to launch it. I was very curious how. This was once the 40 or less EV miles are gone. I miss the V6 still
This model is in high demand in Canada, where gov'ts subsidises the cost, especially in the province of Quebec, where the subsidy is $13,000 k. People who ordered their Rav4 plug in prime in 2019 are slowly starting to receive their orders. We are fortunate here to have cheap electricity from water, and a great system of electric chargers for the public.
I really do not understand why people do not keep their cars longer. I am already at 9 years on my car and it acts like its just broken in. I plan on keeping for at least 5 more years
Damn .. this is the sort of "review" other reviewers should be doing - anyone can talk about the numbers and fit and finish of the car - but going and explaining the small things about driving dynamics is so important! Great review!
thank you for the 0-100 acceleration video. i like to use 0-100 videos to compare cars. i just run them side by side in two windows and it gives you a very good idea of which car is faster. much more so than simply comparing 0-60 figures because those usually come with caveats like rollout, launch etc ... by the way i just compared it to Volvo XC60 T8 for 0-100 and it's basically neck and neck
I've been driving my "new" '21 Prime (bought used with 22 K miles on it, for 40K, perfect condition) for a month now, my previous car was a plug in '13 Prius. It took me a while to realize, once back home and driving my usual commute and running errands etc., that this car is not only the quickest car I've ever owned, it also uses the least gas, and I'm 74. That's a pretty good trick! Besides selling the Prius, I also sold my 2000 RAV4, as I only needed it during the winter months, now I have one car, that EXCEEDS the Prius economy (I have free/surplus solar power so charging costs are not an issue), hauls ass when needed, and also AWD. Another benefit over the Prius, it pretty much looks like any other SUV, whereas the Prius was instantly recognizable...., so I feel like I have less of a target on my back when I'm driving at 65 mph on the 80 mph list interstates where I live. 75 was as slow as I drove the Prius, not wanting to perpetuate the image many have of the car, ha ha. The Prime is almost a sleeper EV, 99% of the gen pub won't identify it as one, most think its a typical gas hog SUV, gettingmaybe 25 mpg, I find that amusing.
I reserved an SE. And its being built in the next 2 weeks. My Dealership only took 5 orders. They are getting the SE's at first and the XSE are coming later 2020 fully loaded only so close to 50grand. Base XSEs wont be available until 2021. Going to be trading in a Prius Prime cannot wait.
I think this is most definitely the future/what cars are going to be becoming. I am getting the 2020 escape plug-in which is supposed to complete with this, and ya its nice having a plugin that doesn’t use gas, but still a car that can use gas for longer trips/when you need to
@@Summerbeeuty Because Toyota took a decade to make a good electric vehicle, and now there's no supplier left to sell them batteries. Manufacturers who are actually serious about making EV's set up their supply chains 10 years ago. Also, this is probably just a compliance vehicle to get ZEV credits or some shit like that.
Wife has a Niro hybrid, had a gas Rav4 before. Once these are available, thinking this will be her new daily come 2022, Toyota knocked it out of the park here!!
Hi Mark. Great channel ! Would appreciate it if you talked this year about the available commercial solutions (if any...) and the price for replacing the electric batteries in all these EV or phev cars. Just did a Tesla Model 3 test drive in Europe and as of now, battery replacement is 20 000 EUR. Doesn't this simply rule out these cars beyond their warranty deadline or as pre-owned cars for the greatest majority of people ? As of today what guarantee is there to have a compatible commercially available and affordable solution to replace the EV / PHEV battery ? Best.
I would love to have one of them, phev are one of the best options for buying a car, you can drive it in EV mode in the city, not spending too much gas or polluting (if you are worried by that) and you can have a great range on long trips, better than diesels.
For a one car family that makes vacation trips, a PHEV with decent range in EV mode is ideal. This fits the bill. Very practical and reliable and durable. Nice capacity for hauling things too. If I were buying a vehicle today, I would want one of these.
If there's one thing I can give Toyota Credit for regarding their Future Vehicles, it's that they're going to implement it over time in a proper manner. 20 Years is a Good amount of time for people to adjust and decide for themselves whether they want to have a Plug-In or Electric Vehicle or Not. IMO, I just don't see it working out, but at least they're giving people time to try it out. Regarding the RAV4 Prime, It's an Excellent Vehicle that while I'm not a fan of, I can no doubt seeing this being a big sell out in the Western States (Primarily due to said states forcing people to buy said 'Energy-Efficient' Vehicles or risk unconstitutional taxation) Maybe I'm missing an Audience somewhere, but the RAV4 has it's buyers, no question about it. Keep up the great work guys, and I look forward to whatever comes next!
Toyota quality and reliability makes this a worthy contender to cross shop with more hyped up cars. The practicality and repair-ability of PHEV is something that suits a good majority of people. 40 miles of range is good for most daily commutes + errands. When things need to be replaced or repaired, most parts are common and available.
I’ve owned the RAV4 Prime XSE Premium for 8 months. I got 5.4 zero to 60. Auto HV/ EV mode, sport mode and sport on transmission with, traction control off, 85 degrees out on Texas flat road pavement. Gas Tank was half full and EV battery full with no wheel spin due to 32 psi on tires. (Normal psi is 35) The car does well in moderate off-road and did great in the Texas snow and ice storm. The car also has charge mode that people don’t talk about that when cruising on the highway it will charge the battery back up just as fast as level 2 charging. There is a huge aftermarket accessories for the RAV4 so that’s a big bonus too. The premium package also has a 1500watt generator that definitely comes in handy.
I think Toyota has done really well with this car, I personally think if u want the 5.7 0-60 get the xse, because it comes with better and wider tyres. Motortrend or Car and Driver was even able to get 5.6
That's not going to help this car, and this is not that type of car lol. Did you see the driving impressions part of this video? Not sure where the hype is coming from. I don't mean to be rude btw.
@savagegeese thanks for the review! There is 3 things PHEV buyers want to know, and car reviews never tell this because they don’t have experience owning those. I have hope that you might in the future. 1. Does heating/cooling run without ICE? examples, Outlander PHEV and Koreans does not, super frustrating. 2. Does it have enough power in EV only mode to keep up with the traffic. 3 is it easy to adjust when ICE comes along? Can you just floor the gas pedal in EV mode without ICE starting?
1. Yes AC runs in EV only 2. Yes it has more than ample power in EV only mode, feels like a 1.8L 4 cylinder. 3. In EV only mode, mashing throttle does not kick on ICE. Only when EV battery range is depleted it goes into HV mode.
I think you do an excellent job of your reviews. very balanced.... I like the way you put the proposed use of each vehicle into the review it makes your review reasonable. Keep up the great work
Would you do a review of the 2020 Mini Cooper S Countryman All4? I'm interested in that car and would love to hear some honest opinions of it. Thanks for the great reviews! Subbed.
"A little there to do off road and trails'. You should see the other vids of off road in the Prime. I'd say more than a little. No, it isn't a 4 Runner, and it doesn't have proper locking diffs or a low range, but it does pretty well. It is more capable than most other crossovers.
Buddy of mine has the Prius Prime and he loves it. Then again, he is a boring ass lawyer. For some reason, when I see this thing, I feel like it would be the SUV the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would drive.
BarnStangz I don’t understand how someone would buy something like this. What brings someone to want to buy a car like this? Have they given up on life and this is what it’s come to? Dudes a boring ass lawyer.. why not get a Tesla if he wants to feel like he’s helping global warming (or is it climate change, or climate disruption.. they keep having to change what it’s called)
@@geraldgoodiii6993 Yeah man, I don't know. I think some people just want an "appliance" type car. He is also very cheap when it comes to just about everything. No way in hell would he spend money on a Tesla, although the Model 3 isn't that expensive.

I like that this is a plug in hybrid, but the one side shot he took outside early in the article looked like the Pontiac Aztek, with the shape of the wheelwells small wheels and the high backend. I like the vehicle but found it funny that was the first thought I had when I saw that shot
Impressive vehicle and as usual a detailed, balanced review, especially in view of the short time with one of the few pre-production RAV4 Primes that Toyota has distributed to automotive journalists. The vehicle itself is a compelling alternative to both existing hybrids and pure EV's and arguably more environmentally positive than the latter as a result of the wider distribution of smaller capacity batteries than the latter. Batteries that are still usable for most commuting and urban traffic duties and the elimination of pure EV's "range anxiety" in a vehicle that matches American consumer's twin demands for performance and fuel economy. The fly in the ointment is that Toyota has set the entire first year production target at 5000 units. And even for the 2022 model year Toyota promises only 25,000 Rav4 Primes will be available. Thus, virtually every RAV4 Prime available until the fall of next year is either already spoken for and/or the promised $7500 tax rebate will be largely consumed by dealers' "market adjustment" sticker. Even in 2022, I suspect demand will far exceed supply. Making a few "pre-production" vehicles available to automotive journalists is only one step short of sending a concept vehicle around to be evaluated. So what is Toyota's strategy here? It's two-fold. First, to draw customers into Toyota showrooms where the will be easy prey for dealers who'll be happy to take orders for the currently available RAV4 hybrid models. Second, to put the brakes on sales of competing conventional hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EV's that are or will be on sale significantly before a RAV4 Prime can be driven home. At best it's a clever marketing strategy and little more. At worst it's a rather underhanded bait and switch tactic.
There's nothing environmentally friendly about a 300 lbs cast-metal engine block. I don't know where this anti-battery myth originates from (maybe from the days of NiCD batteries?) an engine and battery are both principally solid metal components, with all the material source and manufacturing that goes into that. Conversely, this car is not going to be so environmentally friendly in 10-15 years when many of them fall into disrepair and start leaking extremely toxic used engine oil into the environment, something which pure-EV's do not do.

The RAV4 Prime is the first hybrid that convinced me to look into hybrid-types vehicles. For me it looks like a no-compromise solution. It's even capable off-road, if you get the H3 version. For the price it seems to me as the best all-around vehicle you can get at the moment.
My gf just picked up a xle hybrid and I think it's fantastic! Even as an enthusiast.
Great review. Good for Toyota for testing the waters. After your review I no longer regret my RAV4 Hybrid instead of waiting for the plug-in.
I test drove the RAV4 hybrid a few weeks ago, I had it for half a day and really liked it. Smooth, the Prime will be a bit better though.
Cool story bro..
I spoke with another V6 RAV4 owner this morning, I have yet to find one that was not very happy they bought it.
Well done, you managed to fit in 3 references to the classic V6 RAV4 in a 15 minute video.
I just want you to know I chose to watch this video about a Rav4 over a very desirable super car just because I
You have the best auto reviews!
I miss the V6 still
8:19 "Prius" Prime Plug-In.
He was in a hurry this time. 🤷🏻♂️
Same tech. Video is fine
My Account __ The Savagegeese is always fine. Even if there is an occasional minor issue.
Thanks. Please review the Honda Clarity PHEV, it would be a fantastic underbody review given crazy aluminum suspension and structural components!
11:10 that save was savage. dude shrugged it off like nothing happened.
I really do not understand why people do not keep their cars longer. I am already at 9 years on my car and it acts like its just broken in. I plan on keeping for at least 5 more years
I lease cars
It seems like a comfortable, quiet, and enjoyable ride. I want one. but I'd like to see the new engine in a Toyota Camry hybrid with plug in.
Damn .. this is the sort of "review" other reviewers should be doing - anyone can talk about the numbers and fit and finish of the car - but going and explaining the small things about driving dynamics is so important!
Classic music, best quality on youtube, intelligent thoughts... what can be better?
Excellent review
Almost got to see you ditch that bus. Nice test as always.
Really Nice and honest review.
Cool man :}
good luck finding one. I think all toyota have waiting list. Weird recession we are living right now.
I mean it's not like they're going to manufacture a lot. Something like 5,000 vehicles for the first year.
My local dealer told me no new Toyota models until at least august
I reserved an SE. And its being built in the next 2 weeks. My Dealership only took 5 orders. They are getting the SE's at first and the XSE are coming later 2020 fully loaded only so close to 50grand. Base XSEs wont be available until 2021. Going to be trading in a Prius Prime cannot wait.
Ya I'll wait for the TRD model thank you. Nice save by the way.
I think this is most definitely the future/what cars are going to be becoming. I am getting the 2020 escape plug-in which is supposed to complete with this, and ya its nice having a plugin that doesn’t use gas, but still a car that can use gas for longer trips/when you need to
This car is going to sell really well. Good job, Toyota.
Except they are only selling 5,000 in the US. You can't even configure one on their website anymore.
@@bobthebuilder372 im sure Toyota will be fine.
Already is! Can't find them anywhere! I was excited to try to find an XSE version, not one to be found in a 500 mile radius.
mcgaurya000 Why is it so limited ?
@@Summerbeeuty Because Toyota took a decade to make a good electric vehicle, and now there's no supplier left to sell them batteries. Manufacturers who are actually serious about making EV's set up their supply chains 10 years ago. Also, this is probably just a compliance vehicle to get ZEV credits or some shit like that.
Great review. I'm sold on it, but so far no luck in finding one.
Wife has a Niro hybrid, had a gas Rav4 before. Once these are available, thinking this will be her new daily come 2022, Toyota knocked it out of the park here!!
for the life of me, i can't comprehend why you don't have more subscribers.
😪😴
He said "Prius Prime" at the beginning of the Driving Impressions... Long day, Mark? We love you and your content.
I have a RAV4 2019 in Korea. It's awesome!!!
RAV4 has come a long way since the spare tire in the back days of old.
Best.
Prius Prime didn't make fiscal sense to me given competition (Ioniq, Clarity, etc.). RAV4 Prime tickles my sensitive regions.
*Excellent open statement summary*
Throw the running gear and battery into a Camry to make a Camry Prime (AWD) in XSE trim and I’ll be in tomorrow to order one.
Great review.
Yes, it would be a good choice for me if it were smaller and a car. City driving includes city parking, alas.
Keep up the great work guys, and I look forward to whatever comes next!
great review
Good info. How do you feel about the handling of the vehicle on the highway, back roads, and city?
I think Toyota has done really well with this car, I personally think if u want the 5.7 0-60 get the xse, because it comes with better and wider tyres. Motortrend or Car and Driver was even able to get 5.6
That's not going to help this car, and this is not that type of car lol. Did you see the driving impressions part of this video? Not sure where the hype is coming from. I don't mean to be rude btw.
So will changing out the tires change the driving dynamics of the Prime for the better?
@savagegeese thanks for the review! There is 3 things PHEV buyers want to know, and car reviews never tell this because they don’t have experience owning those. I have hope that you might in the future. 1. Does heating/cooling run without ICE? examples, Outlander PHEV and Koreans does not, super frustrating. 2. Does it have enough power in EV only mode to keep up with the traffic. 3 is it easy to adjust when ICE comes along? Can you just floor the gas pedal in EV mode without ICE starting?
1. Yes AC runs in EV only
Keep up the great work
Thanks great review ;))
How about MPGE with full battery in hybrid mode for the max range 600 miles? Is it still 94 or only for the first 60 miles?
Them corners :)) definitely just fort comfortable rides
Nice review. It sounded like Mega Man music in the beginning.
my V6 Hybrid Lexus SUV is smooth like silk and sounds great even after 11 years ! I hope lame guys will bring a Prime too !
So fun to see that you listen to Vulfpeck !!
Yeah Great Review 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼I have 2019 RAV4 so far so good only thing is..
Front wheel liners are made of Felt which causes to Shed like a Dog instead of plastic like previous RAV4..
I was lucky my dealership replaced them for me...that’s the only flaw

I can watch almost anything you produce.
