Hello Wendi, I rewatched this video. And it's so helpful to see it again because if a person has been doing quilt as you go. But not adding on borders before. This is so makes sense. It's so much easier to quilt and add a border beforehand. And to just be able to add the backing. I so can appreciate this even more than I did the first time I saw it Thanks again.
This is so smart, it never occurred to me that this would be the way to do the sashing. I wanted to try a quilt with sashing around QAUG blocks but couldn't figure out how to do it, now i know, THNKS.
You are a wonderful teacher. I learned to sew after 50. I have learned so much from teachers like you. I am especially interested in quilt as you go. Thank you for your tutorials.
I want the backing on when I add they quilting and sash it together...whats the point if I have to go back and quilt again...should be done when the blocks are attached! I don't have a large machine and don't want to SHOVE a quilt through that small opening
I found this very video very helpful as I, as in a previous comment, had already cut my 2 1/2" sashing and thought I would not be able to QAYG because a quarter inch seam would not be enough but I think it will be doable! after watching your video. The footage and speech was very clear. Thank you!
I am in the middle of a quilt-as-you-go "column" style quilt (similar to your dino quilt, but with the blocks stacked vertically instead of horizontally), and I was intimidated on how to approach the sashing between the columns. Your advice is very timely and clear. Thanks! Just subscribed.
Well I guess I am going to resign myself to quilting this way from now on or not quilt. It's almost impossible to quilt a queen size quilt on a domestic machine not using this method. I'm so tired of fighting my quilts its caused me to almost give it up but I love piecing so much. So I'm saying "uncle"! Thanks for the tuts!
I have all my fabric and 2.5 strips purchased for a sashed tumbler quilt I am making. I have the blocks finished and decided that I want to do QAYG! My sashing strips are already cut. I think I can quilt them one at a time and then cut them out to size to make the sashing strips across the quilt as you did in the video. I guess I'm just looking for confirmation from you as to whether this is doable! YIKES! I'll be buying a full piece of fabric from now on though!
Wendi, I love your QAYG method and have used it for quilts I made for my granddaughters. I can attest to the fact that it works great! I was wondering in this quilt, if I could join the fabric for the sashing to get the width needed before quilting the sashing. I was thinking to make two hunks of sashing by cutting the extra fabric and attaching to the left side of the sashing fabric for one piece, and the right side of the sashing fabric for the other piece. And then quilting each piece, just as you did. This would eliminate the need to join the already-quilted sashing pieces. And it would keep the seam from falling in the same place on the quilt on every sashing row. Would this work?I hope this makes sense. LOL, clear as mud!
I do very minimal quilting at that point - just along the seam lines to hold the backing to the quilt. So it ends up being a 10" grid. It's all straight lines so it's easier to handle through the machine and takes me about half an hour to do a nap size quilt. You'll find lots more info about my QAYG method here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/03/quilt-as-you-go-everything-you-need-to-know.html
Just like any other quilt, and then I just stitch in the ditch between the blocks. This method lets me have fun with more complex quilting designs in each block (lots of wavy lines and turning corners) and then just do very limited simple straight-line quilting when I'm dealing with the whole mass of the quilt.
It's brand new from Timeless Treasures! I'm out of stock right now, but I'll have more before the end of next week. shop.shinyhappyworld.com/collections/tools-supplies/products/dinosaur-skeletons-fabric-sold-by-the-half-yard
The way I do QAYG doesn't use any extra backing. You can get all the details for my method in this free workshop. shiny-happy-world.teachable.com/p/let-s-make-a-quilt
Thanks for responding, I actually did find your site but was not able to find the answer to my question, I am thinking an additional yard should be sufficient for the extra cutting I will be doing for the various mixed size blocks.
This post has links to all the different videos for the QAYG method I use. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/03/quilt-as-you-go-everything-you-need-to-know.html
This video is ONLY showing how to add sashing to a QAYG quilt using the method I use. It doesn't show adding the backing. You can see that step in this video. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/04/tips-for-quilting-a-cuddle-fleece-back-video-tutorial.html It also has specific tips for using cuddle fleece, but the method is the same no matter what fabric you use.
Here's a video that shows that more. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2014/01/video-quilt-3-finishing-quilt.html It's really just like basting a regular quilt - just no batting in the "sandwich."
Your quilt is very beautiful but not a QAYG method that I would consider as the backing is not quilted in and I would think sewing the rgw batting in the seam would create added bulk. I think there are better methods, but thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your opinion. I can report after making (and repeatedly washing and drying) dozens of quilts using this method that (surprisingly) you never notice the extra bulk of the batting in the seam. I only use Warm & Natural 100% cotton batting, which is on the thin side - that could surely make a difference. And I've never had problems with the minimal quilting of the backing. The Warm & Natural batting only needs to be quilted every 10" anyway (which is the finished size of all my blocks and so the distance of the quilting that attaches the backing) and it gets quilted much closer than that to the front of the quilt.

The dino blocks are SO CUTE! Love it. Very helpful tips!
Thank you for this very useful video. Have lots of squares already quilted for place mats so perfect timing for my 'change of mind' project!
Thank you! I am a beginner and creating a memory quilt with different sizes. You have a way of making it all make sense. I appreciate your videos!!!

I have just reached this stage in my dinosaur quilt and panicked- not anymore i totally understand my next step thank you Wendi x

Thanks for all your great info love them...loving your great hair cut as well

I just love your quilt that is so cute. Great job showing the sashing. 😁
You make beautiful quilts. What batting do you use
Very informative! I totally get it. My question is...now putting the "backing" on. Do you quilt even MORE to hold backing to the batting?
I do very minimal quilting at that point - just along the seam lines to hold the backing to the quilt. So it ends up being a 10" grid. It's all straight lines so it's easier to handle through the machine and takes me about half an hour to do a nap size quilt. Wendi Gratz is there a you tube on stitching the back on? PS. You are fabulous!!
Did you cut batting narrower Han your fabric.
How do you keep the dinosaur material from unraveling? Looks so pretty. Thanks for sharing. :))
This post answers that - with photos! :-) www.shinyhappyworld.com/2015/10/how-durable-is-applique-with-fusible-adhesive.html
Thank you so much. :))
Wendi Gratz shinyhappyworld
wow, that's smart
I decided to use my sashing (3 strips already assembled), as a border. There are 3 strips in the sashing. How can I mitre corners?
Nice video! How did u add backing?
Just like any other quilt, and then I just stitch in the ditch between the blocks. This method lets me have fun with more complex quilting designs in each block (lots of wavy lines and turning corners) and then just do very limited simple straight-line quilting when I'm dealing with the whole mass of the quilt.
How did you add the dinosaurs and cloud?
It's applique. There's a video here showing the basics. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2014/04/applique-fusible-adhesive-video.html 🙂
Did you do 1/4" or 1/2" seams when sewing quilted items?
I use 1/4" seams and press them open for QAYG.
Where did you find the spray KK 2000
Where did you find that adorable dino fabric?
It's brand new from Timeless Treasures! I'm out of stock right now, but I'll have more before the end of next week. shop.shinyhappyworld.com/collections/tools-supplies/products/dinosaur-skeletons-fabric-sold-by-the-half-yard
When you quilt the blocks on top to frame, do you stop at the sashing and zig zag the sash with the block?
Yes - I stop at the sashing and just quilt over the seam lines between the blocks.
Thanks so much!!!
I want to hand quilt my 12' blocks and add 3' sashing. Any suggestions?
If you're hand quilting you might want to assemble the quilt the traditional way instead of using Quilt As You Go.
How much extra fabric do you buy for your backing when doing a QAYG. The pattern calls for 5 1/2 yards so how extra do I need?
The way I do QAYG doesn't use any extra backing. You can get all the details for my method in this free workshop. shiny-happy-world.teachable.com/p/let-s-make-a-quilt
Thanks for responding, I actually did find your site but was not able to find the answer to my question, I am thinking an additional yard should be sufficient for the extra cutting I will be doing for the various mixed size blocks.
Hw is it quilted once the back is added? Quilt in Dutch is not enough is it?
This post has links to all the different videos for the QAYG method I use. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/03/quilt-as-you-go-everything-you-need-to-know.html
Wow!
What am I missing? The back looks like it has exposes seams and no lining?
This video is ONLY showing how to add sashing to a QAYG quilt using the method I use. It doesn't show adding the backing. I would have put the backing on the sandwich first, then quilted the strips and then cut. Join as QAYG
Your quilt is very beautiful but not a QAYG method that I would consider as the backing is not quilted in and I would think sewing the rgw batting in the seam would create added bulk. I think there are better methods, but thanks for sharing.

I am sorry but the point of quilting as you go is to NOT have the large piece to deal with...after it's all put together it still needs quilted!
How do you add the backing to this as you have top and batting quilted.
You can see more about how I assemble my QAYG quilts here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2014/01/video-quilt-3-finishing-quilt.html
