Wow, thank you for this video! I think you cover everything and show us with a full size quilt too. I think I might be able to do this on a baby quilt. Thank you again.
Thank you Wendi, going crazy with a baby quilt that is supposed to have an owl in the center somewhere…I am a newbie and doing this for a relative ad not too sure of myself here. I love your videos and the great information you so selflessly give out. Thank you so much!
I’m so glad to see someone use a zigzag vs doing stitch in the ditch. I’ve made a simple quilt top from a jelly roll strip and stitching in the ditch is a bit daunting for a beginner even with a SITD foot. A zigzag is a bit more forgiving.
Fan-f'n-tastic! Beautiful fun quilt, and you're an excellent talented teacher, too! :) Thanks for creating this vid, now gonna check out your other vids.
Love watching you work, easy to understand and beautiful quilts! I am just starting out quilting so need as much instruction and tips as possible, thank you x
So glad I found you this week. I have never quilted but am an experienced sewist. I am learning a lot. Can't wait to make my first quilt as you go and I am looking for the right fabrics to do the woodland applique. Thanks so much!
Thank you for this! Just pieced together my cuddle fleece backing and this was my next step. Was procrastinating continuing as I was intimidated about what to do. Could I have chosen a more difficult fabric for my first quilt?!?!
I love that you use a zig zag or decorative stitch. I'm still working on the blocks of my woodland critters quilt, from your Craftsy class. I think the cuddle fleece is so snuggley, I'll definitely be using that.
Hi Wendi and everyone reading. I would like to know what seam allowance is best when you need to sew 2 big pieces of backing to make a very one large: 1/2 an inch? 5/8? Etc. Thanks for helping me out and have a great day! 🌸🌸
Can I ask how do you wash a quilt that’s got a cuddle back but cotton fabrics at the top ? What cycle do you put in your washing machine and do they shrink the same or does one pull more and distort? Or do you have to prewash everything, something I never do usually with an all cotton quilt?
When you say cuddle fleece are you talking specifically about that brand or minky in general? I've had lots of stretching with minky even with a walking foot.
Love your videos! I am attempting for the first time your method and I'm so excited to quilt the smaller pieces! I"d also like to try the cuddle fleece backing which I never have. Can you get it large enough for a queen size quilt? My final quilt size is working out to be 92x104. Or did you have to piece the backing to make the final larger size. ??
You'll have to piece the backing to get the larger size, but that's not a problem with cuddle fleece. Just make sure you cut off the selvedge edge - that's thicker and more bulky and you'll feel it. Join two cut edges and you'll be fine.
Hi Wendi, How would I do this technique if I'm adding a ruffle to my quilt. I'm sure I could figure it out, however I would like an experts opinion. I really appreciate your video and learned a lot....this is my first quilt for my new up and coming grandbaby girl so it's extra special!
I've never added a ruffle to a quilt, but the method for using a cuddle fleece back is pretty much exactly the same as a regular woven cotton back. I just made this video because so many people were asking if they needed to use special thread, special needles, special stitches, etc. So whatever method you can find online for adding a ruffle should work just fine even if you're using cuddle fleece for the back.
Hi Wendy thank you for this video I was going crazy with trying to add fleece and it not lining up, my question is your referring to cuddle fleece is that anti pill fleece or polar fleece ? Also how do I tell the difference from a walking foot from the other regular foot ? I'm new to quilt making so hence the dummy questions ?
This is the Cuddle Fleece I use. shop.shinyhappyworld.com/collections/fabric/products/cuddle-fleece It's different from polar fleece (quite a bit softer) but you can use no-pill polar fleece as a substitute. It's about the same weight. You'd know it if you had a walking foot. It doesn't come with most machines - you probably need to buy it separately and it's worth every penny if you make quilts. It's like adding feed dogs to the presser foot, so it pulls the top layer of fabric through evenly with the bottom layer.
Thanks! It's one of my designs. :-) You can get the pattern here. shop.shinyhappyworld.com/collections/quilt-patterns/products/puppies-quilt-pattern-and-workshop
Wendi, thank you for doing this video! If you didn't prewash your fabric or batting, would you wash them before quilting to the back in order to avoid sagging later? I have a queen sized one to do and wonder about this. Thank you.
I don't. The batting is not designed to hold up to washing without being covered and I worry that it would shred without a backing on it. I've used this method on blocks up to 15 inches square and haven't had any problems with sagging.
Hi Wendi, I have tried one quilt like this but had trouble with my seams not staying open and flat on the back. The batting seemed to stop them laying flat and you cant see the seam flipping once the backing is being sewn on, maybe I should cut away the batting in the seam. Any tips for keeping the seam open please....I am about to try another quilt the same way.
Make sure you're using high heat (cotton setting) and plenty of steam. That should hold it open for days unless you live in a super humid area. If you do - I recommend an extra pressing right before you baste and quilt. If that doesn't do it you can always try starch, but I haven't needed that.
+Tineke Williams I show putting the blocks together here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/04/how-to-join-quilt-as-you-go-blocks-video-tutorial.html You still needle to do some quilting to secure the back, but it's pretty minimal - and easy since it's all straight lines. It usually takes me half an hour or less to do a nap sized quilt.
Hi Wendy~This is the cutest quilt I have ever seen. Fantastic Job! I have one question. How did you bind it? Did you use the fleece (I think you said 3") to fold once, then fold again to the top and top stitch? I have two quilts ready to bind. I hope you can reply soon. Thank you
This video shows the method I use to bind all my quilts. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2011/05/video-how-to-bind-a-quilt.html I don't like using fleece to bind - it's too bulky which makes it harder to work with, and it makes the finished binding kind of stiff.
I don't, because shrinkage and color bleeding isn't an issue. I do have a few readers who prewash theirs because they're giving it to a child who has chemical sensitivities and almost all fabric is treated with sizing and stain repellents before it's sent to fabric stores.
I use the same method to bind all my quilts, no matter what fabric I use for the back. You can see that video here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2011/05/video-how-to-bind-a-quilt.html
I had no trouble with the quilting, but the binding was a nightmare with all those layers. Can anyone give me a tip for binding this quilt? The quilt is beautiful except for the binding. I’m going to be making another quilt and ideally I would like to use cuddle fleece, but I need help figuring this out.
You don't mention which binding method you used - and there are a LOT of different methods out there. This is the method I use www.shinyhappyworld.com/2011/05/video-how-to-bind-a-quilt.html and it works just fine with the cuddle fleece back.
Thank you Wendi...so appreciate this..I to am new and trying to learn all the tricks. I have a question on your pattern. I volunteer at our seniors center by making quilts for the bazaar..we sell them and then all the money goes back to the seniors center.. I do not make any money ..can the pattern be used for this purpose? thank you again for teaching me and inspiring me
That's the Playful Puppies quilt pattern. You can find it here. shop.shinyhappyworld.com/collections/quilt-patterns/products/puppies-quilt-pattern-and-workshop All my patterns are digital PDF files delivered by email, so there are no shipping charges. :-)

Thanks for your prompt reply. The fleece is stretchy so your technique prevents the shifting, I just need to move around a satin ruffle!

+Wendi Gratz Are they in Australia or the state's. I am in New Zealand
Is there a video of sewing the dog ?
When you cut your cuddle fleece, take it carefully and put in the dryer with a wet washcloth for a few minutes. This pulls all the fuzzies away!

I do! shop.shinyhappyworld.com/collections/quilt-patterns/products/elephants-quilt-pattern
Is minky like this too?
Yes. It's a little thinner than the cuddle fleece and only has pile on one side - but you work with i the same way.
@@WendiGratz Hi Wendi, would cotton flannel be another good option for the back? Do you have experience using it?
