    Once I start making a LUT I very often have to make a version, 1,2,3, and so on. I don't know how to save them in a way where I can go back to an earlier version to strait from there again, like tonite I was all the way up to version 13 ( little changes) and I wanted to go back to where I was at version 8. I thought I was being smart by eventually saving each one as a preset. Nope, got bit in the butt on that lol. So I am at the wall, suggestions? 👍👍👍

    Dylan, Also wondering if the developers over at Color Finale ever resolved the issues you found regarding the "Save Presets?" ..... You mentioned that you sent a question to the developers and that you would let us know what their answer was. I have a large amount of clips to correct and color grade in my project and just want to know if this was something I should dive into based on your tutorial - or wait, while this was being addressed in a future firmware update. I'm Sure I'd probably notice something, but just wanted to check and save time before committing to a process only later to find the same conclusion ... Another great video sir, thanks for taking the time to make these videos and share them with us. I am curious on your thoughts of this ColorFinale when using consumer grade cameras such as the go pro and budget friendly drones for color correction. I have a background in photography, I am very clear on shooting in Raw etc. However for basic youtube videos and the ease of use the smaller cameras go pro and small drones work best for the motorcycle adventure trips I am normally doing. I would still like to get better overall quality video for youtube videos and don't see the cost of the more expensive drones as well as size of them being able to work with my budget nor do I see a chance of stock videos being an option for me as well. I have been uploading to stock agencies for years with the raw files from cameras and I have never seen a pay out worth the effort in my mind for a small one man operation. I know lots of folks would disagree, but if you were working with smaller consumer grade video cameras, would you still consider this ColorFInale as large of an asset for video production knowing you will not be shooting in log settings.? I know you are very busy and thanks in advance if you can answer this question for me. Thank you and have a blessed weekend.

    My understanding of ACES… You take whatever your capture colour space is and convert it into the ACES colour space (which is a very large colour space). You do this with all your footage from all cameras and then you match these cameras within the ACES colour space. Now that they are matched and in this one common and large colour space any adjustments you make after this should result in consistency across your shots. If you didn’t do this you might match the cameras and then subsequent adjustments might not have consistent results between cameras meaning you’d have to correct for this. You then output to your delivery colour space (rec709/2020 etc) as ACES is not for final delivery.

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  3 года назад

      Thank you for that Luke! That really helps out 🙏

    • @manmadewilderness
      @manmadewilderness 2 года назад

      The simple implementation of ACES in Color Finale is: click on Color Management/Use ACES. For the "Input Space", find the camera the footage was shot with. For the "Output Space", find the device profile you are grading on. These are known as the Input and Output Transforms. Simply done. But as far as I can see there's no way to turn it on as a saved preset, similar to the "Recent presets" below the "Edit Layers" button. Final note: ACES only works on Log footage. Use one of the other Color Management settings for other footage.
      An excellent explanation for ACES is given by a series of videos by Cullen Kelly, the above taken from this one: ruclips.net/video/v8P3rshGgdM/видео.html
      He's working with Resolve, so Color Finale doesn't have quite the control that is available with the Resolve nodes, but the transforms work the same.

    Very good, I will have to watch this about another three times at least!
    So many questions...
    I have noticed that the Assume Log doesn't really do a good job if you shoot log ETTR (expose to the right). The exposure slider doesn't help. I ended up making the same flow with a LUT in the layers to go from LOG to 709.
    When I'm working with slog2 footage in chromatic, I can choose to put the log to REC709 LUT at any stage in the stack. Am I right in thinking that the colour finale stack goes in reverse order from the bottom to the top, so that adding a new process stacks on top of the previous one?
    Also, when comparing with the CoreMelt Chromatic Group process, is there no way to include exposure, contrast, white balance, temp, tint, saturation, sharpness etc into a Color Finale group? Without those elements the other clips don’t look the same, which kind of defeats the object of the group technique. I am having to copy and paste onto other clips, which is fine until I want to tweak the temperature control and have it change on all the other clips… Is there a way round this? Am I missing something?
    Where do these fit into the flow of processing? Is the exposure, contrast etc before the layers? Where does the sharpening happen in the chain?
    When I tried using Assume Log on the input it did not do a good job because I tend to expose to the right by 1.7 If I tried to adjust the exposure down to compensate it just acted like lowering the gain, so the image went duller as the top end was lowered. This tells me that the exposure is actually after the input log LUT, which is not very useful. I ended up ignoring the colour management tab, leaving it on assume video, and starting a layer group with the LUT that I needed. Can I confirm that this would still mean that the LOG curves were hitting the LUT rather than a flat looking REC709 hitting the LUT?
    There is a tab called Presets, maybe that is something I should look into?
    Also, I have a large collection of LUTs, most of which I don’t use, but when I go to add a LUT I have to scroll through all of them in a big gallery to find the ones that I do need. Is there a better way to organise these with folders? They are organised on my hard drive but in Color Finale they all display at once.

    Color correcting/grading SLOG3 do you see much difference using "Assume Log" or leaving "Assume Video" in the color management, and using the Color wheels? It seems to me that using "Assume Log" for SLOG3 to be in a REC709 space, the clip is way more saturated. 🤔

    • @dylanjohndickerson
      @dylanjohndickerson  2 года назад +1

      I would use assume LOG for SLOG3 as the first step. Assume LOG should be used when your footage was shot in LOG and not converted to Rec 709. So just that flat image. That'll add the contrast and saturation back in. If your footage's color space is standard Rec 709, Assume Video will just add a tad bit of contrast and saturation to help make your shot pop a bit more.
