My pleasure Mike! Oh definitely. I mean, Davinci is still the industry standard for color grading but I think for most creators, FCP's tools will do just fine. Also there's Color Finale 2 Pro for FCP and that REALLY steps up color grading abilities in Final Cut. ruclips.net/video/rdKqC0ja95c/видео.html
Dude, fantastic video. I also feel like I've been using color curves more and more and feels like you get more specific control and finesse with it. And great reminder about the shape mask, do things like this in Lightroom all the time but often slips my mind in fcpx. Excellent stuff, many thanks.
Thanks Gino! I appreciate you letting me know. I have a few different tutorials lined up for the next couple weeks but I'll make sure to get in another color grading tutorial with built in tools soon 👊🏼
Absolutely loved this Dylan - I'm still getting my head around colour correction and this made so many things super clear to me... thank you for taking the time to share :)

Thank you! ☺️ ya it’s just a lot of trial and error. I wish I could provide you with the footage for this tutorial, but my hard drive broke and I’m currently getting it recovered. My recent color grading tutorial has footage you can download and follow along with if you’re interested in a little more practice.
Thank you for this video. I just have a big question for you. Explain how do a color grading its important but why anyone don't explain how much is importat do a good color profile on camera and then do a color grading?
Do you mean why does anyone not explain how to get correct white balance? Because I always say if you want to color grade, I suggest shooting in a LOG profile.
Hey Dylan, great work as always. Coming from a Photoshop background, the part I missed was how you isolated each of the effects to various parts of the video without a mask (the tree). When I use multiple color wheels it seems to affect everything. Suggestions?
Hey! Thanks so much. So I think what you're looking for are the HSL curves. That will allow you to change the saturation, brightness, or hue of any color you choose. You wouldn't use the color wheels for what you're saying. I hope I understood your question.
Excellent video as always, would love to see more in the future. A few points/questions. It would be cool if in the future you could provide us with a download link to the raw footage you're using so we can edit along with you. 14:36 Renaming colour corrections - This would make things so much easier wouldn't it (Come on Apple). How come you didn't adjust skin tones with your mask/HSL method? Cheers for the quality work.
Ah damn, I was actually going to do that, but I forgot. I'll put the link to the raw file when I get the chance. And I didn't use that method because I've found it just takes a little longer and I wanted the adjustment to affect my midtones as a whole. Maybe in the next one I'll use that technique. Thanks for the feedback/comments! Cheers my friend!
Thanks a ton man! I'm releasing a color grading masterclass in 2-3 weeks. If you're interested, you can enter your email and I'll let you know when it drops 🤙🏼 www.dylanjohnmedia.com/courses
Yo Andrew! You’d add a Phantom LUT in place of a technical LUT. Phantom LUTs, like the LOG versions of my LUTs, convert to Rec 709 automatically. Now, you may need to tweak your exposure before you add the LUT so that LUT fits better. Generally, you’d want your shot to sit pretty center on the Luma waveform before adding the LUT. If you try and change the exposure after applying the light, it’s not going to work the same.
@@dylanjohndickerson ok great. So I’ve been putting the LUT in the right place but I’ll fix exposure first this next edit. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to explain, keep the great content coming! Btw, I’ve had Cinema Grade for a couple years and it’s been good in many areas but I’ve been thinking about picking up Color Finale 2 (especially after watching your last post about it). I’m also impressed with your tutorials on the FCP native tools. So I’m torn… lol. Do I hone my skills on FCP tools or take the leap into CF2? 🤷♂️
Amazing man. I've always been daunted by the color grading process. I just always skip it and focus on the general edit. However, you made it stick man. You made it a more fascinating process. So thank you for that. One more thing, I can really see how genuine you are in these videos...I dont see an edited (no pun intended ;P) version of a youtuber but a Real content creator. Such a great video. Like seeing an painter paint a picture =) thanks a lot I will definitely try it. Out of curiosity, what is the best color combination to give constant “autumn” look? Thanks a lot
Thanks so much, Luca! Hmmm a constant Autumn look...well it wouldn't be a complimentary color scheme. It'd probably be an analogous one, with red, orange, and yellow. So if you're at a park, perhaps adjusting the leaves to be more yellow if possible, adding warmth to the overall grade, and tweaking other colors to fit that color scheme.
@@dylanjohndickerson Sorry for the late reply. Thanks a lot, I live in Scotland I and would like to give the clip a gloomy, constant autumn look. I probably need to add what you said, desaturate a bit and take our some blues I guess.
Hello! quick question, Is there any range of how much saturation is good or how much is over. Also how 10bit vs 12bit has any saturation advantages. Thanks
Hey! Have you watched my tutorial on scopes? That goes over how you can tell is you've added too much saturation. ruclips.net/video/MwOEXaAsoDU/видео.html As far as saturation advantages with 10bit vs 12 bit, I don't believe so. At least not a noticeable advantage. That's just going to affect how much color you have to work with in your shot. You shouldn't really be cranking your saturation up too much either.
Great one! Learned a lot from it 😍 Currently I am trying to apply the color & sound design techniques on run-and-gun footage from my vacations. Most of my footage is shot with an a73 (no slog) and has false white balance 😂 The rest is shot with a dji mavic air & iphoneX so I wonder if u have some tips for matching the drone and smartphone footage with the graded a73 footage? ❤️🙏🏻
Nice Fatih! Good luck 👊 hmm well it's going to be tough, but it's doable. The best tip I have for you is to use the comparison viewer to take a try and tweak your shot till it matches up with you a73 footage. Here's the Apple page about the comparison viewer support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/compare-two-video-frames-ver881dea3ac/mac#:~:text=Compare%20saved%20frames%20in%20the,top%20of%20the%20comparison%20viewer.
Hey Kasi! You should be able to get it on the Canon website depending on what C-Log profile you're shooting in. But does the Canon 80D even have a LOG Profile? If not, then no need for a technical LUT. That's solely to convert LOG footage to the Rec 709 color space that we edit footage in. Let me know if I answered your question.
Hey Shay! Certainly. I will be coming out with a full color grading course in the next couple months. Here's the link so you can sign up and get notified when it's active! www.dylanjohnmedia.com/courses

Dude it was very well explained, clear and for a very nice result. I learned some tips, it was very helpful! Thanks for it! +1 keep watching your work 💪🏻
Hell ya! Glad you thought so Nicolas. Thanks for the sub man 👊
Oh, Gosh! This is exactly what I was looking for. You couldn't be more amazing, Dylan. Your tips were very very helpful, easy to understand, too, like your previous tutorials. I'm already a big fan of your videos and of you, as well! Many thanks, pal!
Thank you Lan! 😊 I'm very glad you found it useful and easy to understand. Thank you for your support!
Great video bro. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Appreciate it, brotha!
loved this so much🎉
Glad to hear that! I'm going to make some more in the coming weeks.
Great tutorial mate!! Please keep it up 🙏🏼
Thanks Samuel! Anything you'd like to see in the near future? Maybe another color grading tutorial?
@@dylanjohndickerson acutally you're in perfect timing!! I was searching a lot for tools like what you posted just today 🤣😁😁😁🙏🏻
@@bboysamadt ahh sweet! 😁
This was great! Thanks for making it! Thanks for showing us how capable FCPX is and switching to Davinci isn't really necessary.
Thanks so much, brotha! You definitely do. Curves are the jam 🤘 I appreciate you taking the time to let me know you enjoyed it.
Mean! Yea keep doing these
Okay awesome! I will then 👊 Enjoy your week!
@@dylanjohndickerson chuurrr you to man!
Great video man, learned a lot. And thank you for using the built in tools. Please continue making these kinds of tutorials.
Thanks Gino! I appreciate you letting me know. I have a few different tutorials lined up for the next couple weeks but I'll make sure to get in another color grading tutorial with built in tools soon 👊🏼
it helped me so much - thanks and keep going!!!
That makes me very happy to hear! 😊 Thanks for the support and I will!
Thanks so much for that video, you showed me so many new things
It's my pleasure! If you're interested in learning way more, check out the FCP Color Grading Masterclass ✌🏼 www.fcpcolorgradingmasterclass.com
So much help! Thank you...it's time to test it and jump to your next video! (Klaudia)
Niceeeeeee, get it Klaudia!
Absolutely loved this Dylan - I'm still getting my head around colour correction and this made so many things super clear to me... thank you for taking the time to share :)
Ah great to hear Tony! I’ll definitely be making more of these ☺️ thanks for letting me know
Thank you for this tutorial. This was etremely helpful.
Glad to hear it, Tony 😊 Thanks for watching!
this is an awesome lecture thank you!
My pleasure bro! 👊🏼 thanks for watching
learned a lot thanks.
Glad to help!
GUYS, watch other tutorials as well but THIS ONE is necessary because he teaches us creative colour grading with endless options rather than just following and copying everything step by step.
Well thanks so much, Rojo! I'm glad you liked it. I'm in the process of creating a professional color grading course for Final Cut Pro users. If you're interested, sign up to the email list so you get notified when it's released 🤙🏼 www.dylanjohnmedia.com/courses-1
Great tutorial, Dylan! I have learned a lot in those 21 minutes.
Will take a bit longer to put it into practice, I guess :)
Thank you! ☺️ ya it’s just a lot of trial and error. I wish I could provide you with the footage for this tutorial, but my hard drive broke and I’m currently getting it recovered. My recent color grading tutorial has footage you can download and follow along with if you’re interested in a little more practice.

@@dylanjohndickerson thanks, did that one 5 days ago 😉.
I am sure I speak for many that the footage you provide is a big bonus.
@@gert-janvanbuseck haha looks like I’ll have to start pumping out videos faster ⚡️
I hope I understood your question.
thanks guy
You're welcome mate!
Cheers my friend!
keep going man! that was amazing!
Thanks a ton man! I'm releasing a color grading masterclass in 2-3 weeks. If you're interested, you can enter your email and I'll let you know when it drops 🤙🏼 www.dylanjohnmedia.com/courses

this is fire!!!
Thanks for watching amigo!
That was good. Could you please talk more about adding glow? How to add it in fcpx.
Hey man! Check out the link in the description. I have a full tutorial on there. In the next one, I'll make sure to show that step.
@@dylanjohndickerson thank you very much. I wish you all the best
Same to you Mohommad!
This was dope!!
Thanks! 👊
What a great tutorial my guy congrats
Thanks brotha!! 🤙🏼
So question… would I add a Phantom LUT after a Technical LUT or in place of a Technical LUT? Thanks for the content, loving your stuff!
awesome, thanks a lot
Thanks so much for watching!
Keep up the good work brother.

Dude, this was awesome feedback to receive. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to watch the video AND also to leave a kind comment. I'm stoked that I could make color grading more fun for you. I also used to just pass over it but I've kind of fallen in love with the process. Have you seen my other color grading tutorials by chance? You may enjoy those as well.
I really try to be my authentic self in my videos so I'm glad that it shows 😊 Thanks a ton for the support Feras!
I probably need to add what you said, desaturate a bit and take our some blues I guess.
thank you
You're welcome!
Awesome work
Thanks a lot Mauria!
Sir very amazing color grad good job 👍?
Thanks so much!
very helpful.. god bless.
Glad to hear it! Cheers!
Hello! quick question, Is there any range of how much saturation is good or how much is over. Also how 10bit vs 12bit has any saturation advantages. Thanks
Hey! Have you watched my tutorial on scopes? That goes over how you can tell is you've added too much saturation. ruclips.net/video/MwOEXaAsoDU/видео.html
As far as saturation advantages with 10bit vs 12 bit, I don't believe so.
Here's the Apple page about the comparison viewer support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/compare-two-video-frames-ver881dea3ac/mac#:~:text=Compare%20saved%20frames%20in%20the,top%20of%20the%20comparison%20viewer.
best one 😍
Glad you liked it! 😊
i appreciate your didactic, keep going
Thanks Hiago! 🙏🏼
Hi Dylan, I use a canon 80D, Where can i get a normalization lut? or a technical lut?
I have such a poor understanding of color grading, any suggestions on where to learn from the ground up???
Hey Shay! Certainly. I will be coming out with a full color grading course in the next couple months. Here's the link so you can sign up and get notified when it's active! www.dylanjohnmedia.com/courses
Dylan what do you recommend for lighting? What Kelvin? For a talking head video. Thanks!
Hey man! For a talking head video, I recommend shooting at 5600k, setting you cameras white balance to 5600k and controlling the light in the room so you don’t have contrasting light. Give this video a watch when you get the chance 👍 ruclips.net/video/lS0PVb4Xtb4/видео.html
Where can I get the Sony Luts you mentioned in this video?
Go to the Sony website
✌
Hey nice video :) Does this work for HLG3 too? I dont get a flat image like yours .. i got more colors and saturation...
Thanks! :) Ya sure! Just skip the part where I talk about converting LOG footage to Rec 709
