    The (V), which ran from Forest Hills, Queens to 2nd Avenue in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, was a line that had some history with it. Unfortunately, the (V) only was in service for about 9 years and was suspended from service permanently on June 25th, 2010, due to budget cuts and now the (M) replaces the majority of the line, with the exception of 2nd Avenue Station.
    The (V) used mainly Budd R-32s, Pullman Standard R-46s, St. Louis R-40Ms and R42s as well as the Alstom / Kawasaki R-160s and was based out of Jamaica Yard.

    Part of the reason ridership was low on the (V) at first was because they made it go down 53 St. as a local, so people preferred the (E) in hopes of getting to their transfer to the (6) sooner, overcrowding the (E) in the process.

    • @karenevans9232
      @karenevans9232 7 лет назад

      Relocated Redbird But why the MTA didn't want to eliminate the m line instead of the v. I mean the MTA could of kept the v and use it to extend it to Metropolitan Avenue.

    • @karenevans9232
      @karenevans9232 7 лет назад

      CPW Local Wait! If people wanted the e because it was express in Queens, isn't the M local in Queens too? I mean it does make all the v line stops except 2 avenue, so why are people riding it more than they did with the v line? I mean what's the difference between the V going to 53 st Manhattan back then and the M stopping at 53 st nowadays?

    • @JonathanPinocitsymtaog
      @JonathanPinocitsymtaog 7 лет назад

      CPW Local Well technically they still could start using Old Tech Trains on the (M) again but they would have to make brand new orange (M) rollsigns on both the R32s & R42s. Also I heard rumors of a potential R32 return on the (M) Line when it becomes a shuttle between Middle Village-Metropolitan Avenue & Myrtle Avenue-Wycoff Avenue this September. I doubt that'll happen but it's possible you never know.

    • @JonathanPinocitsymtaog
      @JonathanPinocitsymtaog 7 лет назад

      CPW Local Yeah I agree maybe the R42s would be better maintained at different yard. As far as we know R42s being on Fresh Pond Road Yard again could potentially help the R42s last longer. R42s at East New Yard seems to be slowly aging the R42s quicker than they should be.

    • @JonathanPinocitsymtaog
      @JonathanPinocitsymtaog 7 лет назад

      CPW Local True it's because of the fact that Coney Island Yard is one of the biggest NYC Subway Train Yards that makes such a good yard. Also weren't some R32s,R38s,R40s,R42s,R44s,& R46s rebuilt at Coney Island Yard or was it just the R32s,R40s,& R42s rebuilt there? Either way like you said Coney Island Yard would take much more care of R42s than East New York Yard does. The remaining 5 sets should run on the (B)(D)(G)(N)(Q) & (W) Lines again (1 set per line).

      Zero Point UTTP TMQTA That’s because of the platform limitations on the Jamaica and Myrtle Avenue Lines. However, a service increase was made in June 2016 to accommodate growing ridership.
      Plus even before the service increase, the M did not cause any crowding issues on Queens Blvd.

    If they want to bring back the (V), they should give it it's own line. Also, that explains why the (V) went to Euclid Avenue

    • @TheRailLeaguer

      SubwayWizardX18 The V went to Euclid because of a fire at Chambers Street that suspended C service.

      Rails Unlimited Railfanning Here is how we can do it:
      -Build a new connection under Spring Street between the Nassau Street Line and the 8th Avenue Line, with a single stop at Spring Street.
      -Build a new connection under the East River between the Broadway Line and the Fulton Street Line with a single new stop at Columbia Street and a reactivated stop at Court Street. The outer tracks and platform would be reactivated.
      -Replace the Fulton Street Elevated (used by the J/Z) with a Subway connecting the Fulton Street Line to the Jamaica Line at Cypress Hills.
      -Extend the Astoria Line to Laguardia Airport (LGA)
      -Extend the Upper Level Archer Avenue Line to Rosedale vía LIRR line.

      They did that before during work on the M train in 2017 and 2018. During this work, a few M trains from Queens did not terminate at Broadway Junction, but rather at 2nd Avenue. Those trains then went back into service northbound (still carrying the M designation) to Queens.

      @@TheRailLeaguerTo be honest, I think they could spice it up, and make the 2nd Avenue Line its main home. That would be so, if only they is a Bronx portion in the 2nd Avenue Line (where the former 3rd Avenue El was) and join the T. Meanwhile, Q and another service (K) can go to 125th Street Columbia University.

      To bring back some Brown M service, I would suggest extending the J/Z from Broad St to Bay Ridge-95th Street, and running additional D service between Coney Island and 47th-50th Streets, then via the Second Avenue line to 96th Street. That would be much better,

      Traink4 I don’t. However, so satisfy everyone, here is a new plan:
      A new connection is built connecting Nassau Street at Bowery and the 8th Avenue Line at Spring Street, as well as a new East River Tunnel connecting the Whitehall Street station with the outer tracks at Hoyt Street. This way, we can connect the Jamaica Line to an uptown trunk while introducing Culver Express and deinterlining Queens Blvd.
      For service changes, here’s how I would go about it:
      With the new connection, the M can be taken off the 6th Avenue Line. Instead, the line would become the K and operate the same route as today (I will get to the Queens changes in a bit). The difference is that the new K will travel via 8th Avenue between 5th Avenue and Essex Street. To make room for the K, the C would be an express on the 8th Avenue Line. New switches south of 59th Street would be built to have the maneuver occur at the same time as merging and diverging B and D trains. The C and K would operate at 10 trains per hour, supplementing the A and E at 15 trains per hour.
      With the M off 6th Avenue, this creates additional capacity for another service on 6th Avenue. This new service will be designated the V, running from Jamaica-179th Street to Kings Hwy vía the exact same route as the F, except via Queens Blvd Local In Queens and Culver Express In Brooklyn. The V would also operate at 10 trains per hour.
      With the K and V both on Queens Blvd Local, we can move the R off the line since it would be redundant. R service would be rerouted full time to Astoria-Ditmars, and the N would be rerouted to 96th Street with the Q.
      On that note, south of Whitehall Street, the R, instead of going on the 4th Avenue Line, will travel via the new tunnel, and onto the IND Fulton Street Line Local tracks to Euclid Avenue. This allows the C to move to the express tracks and out to Lefferts Blvd. At this point, the C would be staffed and scheduled as part of the A and Rockaway Park Shuttle will be become the H and be a part of the A. The A and H would operate at 8 trains per hour each, giving 16 trains per hour, and with the 10 tph C service, the Fulton Express would be at 26 trains per hour. With the R now at 15 trains per hour, both Fulton Local and Express, as well as Broadway and Astoria service would now have more frequent service.
      To replace 4th Avenue service, in the short term, I am proposing either a J train extension to 95th Street, or a separate Nassau Street overlay, designated M, that would run between Chambers or Essex Streets and 95th Street. Either option would allow for more reliable and frequent service for 4th Avenue riders.
      And this brings me to a long term plan, which is to disconnect the Broadway-Brooklyn elevated with the Jamaica Avenue Elevated, and tear down the structure over Fulton Street. A new subway under Jamaica Avenue with two or three stops would be built connecting the Jamaica Avenue elevated at Cypress Hills and the Fulton Street local line at Broadway Junction. From here, with the full buildout of the Second Avenue Subway, the T would be extended south of Hanover Sq, cross via a new tunnel, and then join the R to Broadway Junction. At Broadway Junction, the T would split from the R, and operate via the new Jamaica Avenue path to Jamaica Center. This would require the Jamaica El stations to be upgraded for longer trains, as would the East NY Yard. A single track connection on Fulton could be retained for yard access.
      However, this long term plan would allow for faster rides to Lower Manhattan, and give the Fulton Local line 25 trains per hour (unfortunately the T would have to be at 10 trains per hour but it’s not a big deal), providing even more frequent service than what is presently offered. J service would be truncated to Broadway Junction and can absorb the Brown M to 95th Street with no issues.
      All in all, my plan would not only retain one seat rides, but introduce better and faster service for everyone. It’s a win-win.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 5 лет назад

      Zero Point KKTK TPTS AVGCP AEDCP AFC AFR AFTL AFTW Why do want the Brown M without replacing service between Midtown and the Jamaica Line? The plan I posted is much better.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 5 лет назад

      @Zero Point KKTK TPTS AVGCP AEDCP AFC AFR AFTL AFTW But there are timers on EVERY line. They can easily be recalibrated or removed. The real problem the M and R bought were bottlenecks on 1960's connections which now seem no longer necessary. However, I did modify my plans for the new connections:
      Two new connections would be built:
      -A two-track connection under Spring Street connecting the Nassau Street Line at Bowery and the 8th Avenue Line at Spring Street. The connections would feature a lower level platform at Spring Street and another station along Spring Street between Broadway and Lafayette Streets. A modification to this plan involves the stations. Originally, I intended for the Broadway-Lafayette stop to be three tracks and two island platforms for terminating trains. However, with the new modification, the Lower Level Spring Street platforms would now be three tracks with two island platforms, allowing for trains to terminate here. Broadway-Lafayette will be two tracks with one island platform. There would still be a transfer opportunity to both the Lexington Avenue and Broadway Lines for service to Lower Manhattan and southern Brooklyn.
      -A two-track connection under the East River connecting Whitehall Street on the BMT Broadway Line and the Hoyt-Schermerhorn on the Fulton Street Line via the Court Street stop, which is now a museum. There would be provisions for future services to ride along with the R. In addition, a possible station serving Brooklyn Bridge Park on this line would be evaluated, whereas the original plans did not include such evaluation.
      A third long term connection would be built connecting the Fulton Street Line with the BMT Jamaica El via Jamaica Avenue, eliminating the Fulton El.
      Now for service changes:
      8th Avenue, 53rd Street, Concourse:
      The 8th Avenue Line carries 5 services. The main services are the A and C trains from Washington Heights and Inwood, the E from Queens and the B and D from the Bronx, which use the 8th Avenue Line between 145th Street to 59th Street before splitting onto the 6th Avenue trunk line going to Brooklyn. The B operates local and the D express. Meanwhile, the A provides express service on the entire line while the C is local south of 168th Street. The E is local.
      One of the key changes of the new connections would be that a 6th Service would be added on the 8th Avenue Line. Under this plan, the M would still travel from Forest Hills-71st Avenue to Metropolitan Avenue, but instead of traveling via 6th Avenue, the line would now do so via 8th Avenue. The line, which will be redesignated the K, will operate at 10 trains per hour. Combined with the E, which will run at 15 trains per hour, this would allow for more frequent service between Queens Plaza and Spring Street through the 53rd Street Tunnel.
      To make room for the K, the C would be moved to the express tracks. Original plans called for the installation of new switches south of 59th Street to allow the C to continue to run local north of 59th Street without interfering with merging and diverging B and D trains. The new plans have cut this out, in favor of more aggressive deinterlining. Under this new plan, the C would run express south of 145th Street. From here, all A and C service would run local north of 145th Street and operate out to 207th Street. The D would have to run local with the B. While this would result in Concourse riders, this would result in more frequent service for all riders since the B and C both operate at 10 trains per hour, the A and D will operate at 15 trains per hour. Speeds on all trains will increase since trains will not have to wait for each other to finish merging and diverging.
      The final result would be the E and K to be on the local tracks south of 42nd Street, with the B and D on the local tracks between 145th and 59th Street. The express tracks between 207th Street and 168th Street, the local track to 145th Street, and the express tracks between 145th and Canal would host A and C service. This makes service much more efficient.
      6th Avenue, 63rd Street, Culver:
      The 6th Avenue corridor has two services, the B, D, F, and M. The B and D take the express tracks between 59th Street and Grand Street, while the F and M take the local tracks. The M connects to both the 53rd Street Line and the Jamaica Line via Chrystie, while the F operate on the full line via 63rd Street. With the rerouting of the M, there is room for more efficient services.
      The plan for 6th Avenue is unchanged compared to the original. The concept is the same, with a revived V train running into Brooklyn-Kings Hwy during weekdays as the Culver Express and Queens Blvd Local, and the F and G remaining unchanged. The G and V would operate at 10 trains per hour, and the F 15, allowing for more frequent and faster service for Culver riders. Weekend V service would terminate at Second Avenue to service Queens Blvd in place of the R.
      Queens Blvd:
      The Queens Blvd line hosts the E, F, M, and R trains. R service on this line impacts reliability on the entire line, and Forest Hills is congested.
      Like 6th Avenue, the plans for Queens Blvd has not changed compared to the original. The K and V would be local to 179 (replacing the M and R), while the E and F would be express all the way to Jamaica. On weekends, the K would terminate at Queens Plaza, and the V would continue with local service to replace the R.
      Broadway, Astoria, Second Avenue:
      Plans for Broadway services has not changed as well. The R would travel to Astoria, and the N would be rerouted to run with the Q on the Second Avenue Subway. With the R operating at 15 trains, and the N and Q both at 10 trains, service would become more frequent.
      Fulton Street, Rockaway:
      The only changes to the services using these lines (both short term and long term) is related to A and C service in the Rockaways. The basic routing plans for the line has unchanged, with the R on the Fulton Street local to Euclid Avenue and the C express with the A, going to Lefferts Blvd. Originally, the C was planned to go to Rockaway Park, but was changed due to scheduling concerns. The A would continue to travel to Far Rockaway, while the Rockaway Park Shuttle would become the H to/from Manhattan. All three lines would operate at 10 trains per hour. This gives more frequent service for Fulton Riders, and a transfer-free commute to South Ferry as well.
      Complementing this is a T line that would operate local with the R between Court St and Broadway Jct and out to Queens. This will be discussed later:
      4th Avenue, Nassau, Jamaica:
      The R on 4th Avenue would be replaced with an extension of the J train, operating at 15 trains per hour. This would result in a more reliable service. Also, to address concerns about the lack of a second service on the West End Line, D service would be increased.
      To maintain that reliability, J service would be truncated to Broadway Junction. To replace service to Jamaica Center, the T would operate via the new Jamaica Avenue Subway and existing elevated to Jamaica Center. This would allow for faster rides to Lower Manhattan for Jamaica riders. Z service would be folded into the J.
      Crosstown Line:
      Aside from the frequency increase in G train service, no reroutes would occur. However, the installation of switches between Queens Plz and Court Sq should be evaluated to allow for the G to terminate at Queens Plaza with no interference with E and K service.
      Canarsie:
      Aside from power upgrades for L service, rerouting of the line to the adjacent freight tracks should be evaluated.
      Do check out this map of the new more efficient NYC Subway system accommodating my changes: drive.google.com/open?id=10kqSyWR3XxaVjT9kIjqzOkHZkHHFWwmK&usp=sharing
