    The Third Avenue L closed in the 50's and replaced with busses. That was a bad idea.

      the Manhattan one closed in the 50s but the rest was closed in 1973 and was replaced by the Bx55 Limited which was replaced by he Bx15 Limited and Bx41 Select in 2013

      The Manhattan portion closed in the 50s. It was the Bronx portion that was closed in the 70s. The TA planned to replace it with a Second Avenue Subway extension into the Bronx... but we see how that turned out.

      @@MysticTransit Back then Nassu St lines was Light Blue in the 70's until Double Letter lines and the Jamaica EL was Removed.

    Personally, the brown M is my favorite because I grew up taking it towards Downtown for school. I'm sad it's gone but we have much better alternatives for it now.

      Yes, the old Lawrence Avenue station... now it's R part of Jay Street-Metrotech Station.

      The brown M also ran on the Brighton line in Brooklyn. That was before they switched it to the West End line.

    The problem with the JFK Express was that you’d pay a premium for super express service and then get stuck behind regular service to Howard Beach.

      My memory of the service was that they just used standard cars. I could see people willing to pay more for a comfortable seat on a car equipped more like one on the LIRR.

      The NX having dedicated tracks for a large portion made more sense as a super express. It really ought to be revived for additional Coney Island service (Not just rush hour, but Cyclones games, concerts, etc).

      Yeah but chances of getting robbed was greatly reduced. The ride from jfk to 57 Street was usually only 30 mins .
      And you always got a seat

    The best Brown M was the line that went to Coney Island...and used the tracks after broad st...very useful service!...

    The JFK Express was comforting to certain passengers because the doors weren’t opened in Bed Stuy, East New York and Ozone Park. It was very sketchy back then so the extra fare was worth it.

      My dad grew up in Howard beach. When he worked late nights in Manhattan he would pay the extra price to ride the JFK express because it had police onboard. NYC subway was very dangerous back then especially late nights

    JFK Express was supposed to eliminate bus traffic on the roads (especially at heavy traffic along the Van wyck expressway in Queens) you paid extra fare for the super Express to Howard Beach (it was about the same amount of the express buses minus the subway fare and traffic) and then you took a shuttle bus to the airport terminals. Back then it was a great idea at the time. And yes it ran four car sets but remember they used R46 (75 footers) which equal six cars to the r40s and r32s and r42s. The problem that the JFK Express created was the (A) train wud have to sit and wait for the (✈️) to come through and pass by it because it had right of way and wud delay the schedules for the (A) & trains in Brooklyn. I remember they later shut it down once the 63rd Street tunnel opened up. I have a couple of pictures of that train taken at the 21st Street-Long Island City terminal. I have to find them

    David Gunn eliminated the double letter destination signs because of the fact that it was too confusing that single letter trains ran local overnight.

    If I remember correctly, the V was introduced to the system to give passengers at local stations along the Queens Bd Line some direct service to Manhattan via the 6th Ave Line, and to take care of the major overcrowding issues at 23rd St-Ely Ave. I think the plan was for the V to redistribute Queens-bound passengers on the 6th Ave Line by getting them to use the additional local trains for shorter trips, and to make better service and transfer opportunities for people at local stations along Queens Bd. I was sorry to see the V go, as I think it served its purpose well despite the M going along that route now.

      Some may say that S. Silver wanted to curry favor with 2nd Ave constituents tired of packed 'F' trains, along with Lex-53rd being overcrowded with E,F EXP trains, it made sense to have 6th Ave Local Qns Blvd Lcl Service from 2 Ave to Forest Hills.

    The Brown M had a lot of ridership to and from Brooklyn via the Montague Street tunnel.
    There is a "Branch Off" in the Manhattan Section on the Montague Street tunnel, from Brooklyn, that would go to Broad Street where the J train Terminates.
    This was an excellent way for people to get from DeKalb Avenue/Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn to stops along Nassau Steet Line. This connection from Broad Street, Manhattan back to Brooklyn to DeKalb for the Brighton Line and Atlantic Ave for the 4th Avenue line was also used.
    The only other way to get to the Nassau Street line from DeKalb or Atlantic Avenue is by taking the Q from DeKalb or N from Atlantic Ave to Canal Street...and then changing to the J train heading back to Broad Street.
    When passengers took the M train, going through the Montague Street Tunnel, with the branch off to Broad Street, passengers could continue on to stops along Nassau Street... Fulton Steet, Chambers Street, Canal Street, Bowery Street, Essex Street.
    After Essex Street, the M would then continue over the Willey B with the J train toward Williamsburg and on to Metropolitan Avenue for the M train.

    As a rider of the 1/9 line back in the mid 90’s, the skip stop service was useful when you rode till the end of the line or close to it. It was very frustrating when you would have to transfer to the next train to get to your destination. It did not really matter to me though since I was getting off at 238 or 242 depending on the train
    The 8 train was mentioned and it should be noted that the worst thing the MTA did was kill the “8” in favor of bus service. It caused that whole area of the Bronx to go without reliable train service, causing there to be a dead zone all the way to 149th street. Webster ave has never been the same since.

    I swear, besides the 9 and the JFK Express, these trains feel like fever dreams. Like, I have vague memories of these trains existing but I remember they used to be part of the subway system.

    Oh wow I didn't even know the 9 train's skip-stop service was horrible! I guess maybe that was one of the reasons it got discontinued in 2005.

      The 9 was just executed very poorly. It could have been good but the way they implemented it was confusing and just caused more problems than solutions

      I personally didn't mind how the 9 operated when I took it to school as a kid, room for improvement sure, but I wouldn't rule out properly executed skipstop

    I personally rank the brown "M" train very high, because it offer an alternative for local service passengers. Now all people have is the Redundant "R". All I thought it should have extended to 95th Street instead of the Bay Parkway.
    The V would have been better if it was extended to at least Church Avenue. This would have double with the "G" as a local. So I kind of rate it high with the M.
    The current service completely makes Nassau into a one route line.
    The AA was a relabeled "K" line. It was a cost efficient way of making the B and C as rush hour only trains.
    The JFK was useful outside Rush Hours with Airport and local riders who lived in the Rockaways. What killed the JFK is that the "A" was extended outside Rush hours as a Brooklyn Express.

    If the V were to ever resurrect, I would say run it along with the F (express in Queens and Local on 6 Av) from 179 to 2 Av, The M could run with the E to W 4 St then go along to its regular route along Chrystie St and leave the E alone to Jamaica Center! I’ve noticed more E’s to 179 St and that’s annoying, especially if your in a rush to catch a timed LIRR!
    Edit: Technically, the H is supposed to have been the original Rockaway Shuttle, but the symbol was never “really used” so they maintained the “S” symbol. Also NTTs do not have the “H” or any announcements under that symbol

    I hate and curse the V line. It killed the G train leg from Long Island City to Forest Hills and forced Brooklyn riders to either make a transfer in Manhattan or negotiate that horrendous transfer point at Court Square!!!

      Ok, First off, the V didn’t kill the G to 71st Av, (at least I don’t think it did😅) second off, What actually happened to the G to 71st Av is because of the 2010 NYC Subway Service Cuts, There’s even a Video about that on this Channel. And make sure you watch it so you know what actually happened.

      @@Logo_subwayfan I'm well aware of the 2010 budget cuts. That said, I think the MTA's taking the G off the QBL was pretty much a foregone conclusion by then. They slowly eliminated the run on nights/weekends by claiming it was because of necessary track work. Then came the V train, and later the V became part of the current M line. As one who regularly rode the G between Brooklyn and Eastern Queens as a one seat ride for years, I stand behind my original statement that I curse the late, unlamented V line, and I also submit that the MTA couldn't care less about what riders want.

    Once again you are spot on with the defunct lines. Brown M used to run down the Brighton line until 1988, ever since it moved to the West End line, the problems started there. As far as the H goes, I feel like it needs to go back to its original configuration where it started from Euclid Avenue, run to Rockaway Park then to Far Rockaway and back to Euclid Avenue. That would help supplement the A in the Rockaways and allow the C to go to either Lefferts or Rockaway Park

      @@christopherglover3829 The North Side took a heavy pounding for 13 years.
      I wouldn't be surprised if it were in horrible shape by July 2001.
      It took 14 years to repair the South Side because of a 3 year delay 1989-1992 by the NYCDOT to find reliable construction companies.
      South Side construction work began in August 1992 and ended in May 1997 Phase 1.
      The NYCDOT had contractors for Phase 1 to only fix the cables, and reconstruct the entire roadway deck of the South side.
      The subway and walkway was phase 2 from 1997 - June 2001.
      Actual construction on Subway portion begin in May 1999.

    Interesting. V died to save the M. You're right in some ridership aspects. Remember that other things goes into Ops and Planning. How long is a one way trip? Where can trains turn around?(M needed 9av and Bay Pkwy). Yard ops also require scheduled time. Skip stop WAS stupid. K was AA. KK did 57/6 to Eastern Pkwy rush hours. Worked the JFK, was muddled in traffic, but people at Howard Beach paid the premium in morning rush for that golden seat. I've seen ALL the H side signs on every roll. I swear, some rolls(R32s, I think) have a P,U,X, (in black and white)in addition to the T,S,W,QandV. When the B was nothing but a rush hour AA to 34/6(rush CC served 8av, I worked B301 job. Sign in 57/6, go get a train in the back of 2AV, lite to 57, round trip in service to Coney Is. and back. Deadhead(ride as a passenger) to 168/Bway, do a round trip to HT(Hudson Terminal, as WTC was known) and back. This is 1985. I was a TWU rep that was involved in some of this contract finagling. People run off a seat on a local to a crowded express, no matter what's going on. Its why they have those platform people at Roosevelt Ave. and Qns Blvd. I worked the V, it was blood money. Good riddance.

    It was probably mentioned already, but the light blue Jamaica K ran from Broadway Junction (Eastern Parkway back then) to 57th and 6th. It ran local while the J ran express from Eastern Parkway to Marcy Ave

    the 9 train was kinda useful because the train skipping only 2 stops wouldnt be causing so much delays then there already is so i think the 9 train deserved better it i dont think it was a bad idea

    Nassau St 'M' AM/PM Rush Hrs Only...allowed Wall Streeters a 1 stop ride from from Broad Street (NYSE) to Brooklyn Heights Court St, along with relief for 4th Ave Riders to get to Pacific St and 36 St Sunset Park without waiting for the R from Forest Hills/Bay Ridge. With 20th Ave, 18th Ave, 55th St and 79th St (New Utrecht High School) being popular West End local stops, didn't make sense for 'D' to run Exp with 'M' local. Mid-Day & Evenings were shuttles Metropolitan AveChambers St (while waiting for J train to Broad St). Late Night MetropolitanMyrtle Ave-Broadway. When Stockbrokers opted for Battery Park City or elsewhere, it didn't make fiscal sense to bring it back. Though with Boerum Hill, Sunset Park, Greenwood Heights & Park Slope (South) boosting in popularity, it would make sense to have the line at least extend to 9th Ave to increase transfers and cut waiting times for those waiting on the 'R' 4th Ave Local. Using the (Z) doesn't work as the extended run time to 9th Ave kills the benefit of skip-stops along the Jamaica Line, (plus the low frequency of EXP to Broadway Junction and longer waits at Kozciuszko, Gates, Halsey & Chauncey).

    I am a fan of skip-stop serivice, I must say. For sure: four or three rails are always better. But on a two rail-track, it's a good way to achieve a quicker throughput and and shortening longer distance rides.

    Back in the 80's I was a conductor on the H train Formally known as the HH train overnight when it was known as the Round Robin. We went from Euclid Avenue to Rockaway Park. From Rockaway Park to Far Rockaway. Then Back to Euclid Ave. I liked it because I lived in Far Rockaway at this time.However this winter and most of the trains were the R-40's and they were cold! Once in a while we had the R-44's which had heat.

    Interesting take on these lines. I have to agree 100% with at least 2 of your choices. I worked the 1 for many years. To borrow an expression from "Thomas the Tank Engine", all the 9 ever really did was create "confusion and delay". Skip-stop service on subway/el type lines forces a transfer onto what should be a one seat ride. The JFK express was another of those "smoke and mirrors" tricks that NYCT is so famous for. New York is in desperate need of a one seat ride to its airports.

    My way of reintroducing extinct lines & redesigning them along with others would put every line in the system as GODLY, as they would be unique in their own way, having their own terminals.

    (H) 2nd Avenue Express Northern Blvd Express. Williamburg Local Rockway local.
    Rockway beach 116 street queens - Wilson Avenue Brooklyn
    (K) 3rd Avenue express 2nd Avenue express Utica Avenue express kings highway local
    Co op City Blvd Bronx - Bay Parkway 86th Street Brooklyn
    (T) 2nd Avenue local Fulton street local
    Broadway 125th Street Manhattan - Euclid Avenue Brooklyn
    (V) Northern Blvd local 2nd Avenue local
    Utopia Pkwy Queens - Hanover Square Manhattan

    The (9) could’ve been a Broadway Peak Express timing like the Diamond 6 along 103rd to 242nd Street
    Two island platforms could be on 145th St
    168th Street
    Dyckman Street
    225th St and it’s last stop.
    The same as the (Z) when they implement island platforms as well on stations above Broadway Junction

      As a special service where dedicated service is offered to minimum schedule passengers..That means limit or in frequent service that provides.a speedier trip.
      The big problem with the #1 line is most of the demand is below 125th Street. And specifically 110th Street. And because this is one of the stations that is skipped, only special infrequent service could be offered.
      Also
      The way the middle merges back into the local tracks at around 103rd Street comes to a crawl. This is the point the local tracks branches out to make room for the below level express tracks.
      I also proposed this special service run Express with the 2/3 and switch over to the South Ferry terminal.
      Other than than, nothing can't happen there.
      By the way, The and the J and Z has the advantage of having a middle track with two stations.
      But there was a time that the MTA wanted to build a thur express via Jamaica Avenue. It would've have immediately captured Jamaica Avenue north of East NY. But no immediate stations were part of the proposal, which resulted in the project being killed.
      Had it got built, it would have no immediate stops until it got to sutphin blvd as there is no space to build a Wood Haven station unless major modifications is made to the El structure.

    Basically, these are bringing back the old 60's, 70's and 80's lines! The current brown M replaces the 60's "KK" train which originated on the J (or QJ) back then and ran along 6th avenue giving Midtown Manhattan service on the BMT eastern division lines AND replaces the F line which vacated the 53rd street portal into Queens, It was a great move for New Yorkers but I used to ride the M train from Bed Stuy to Sunset Park so I am kinda nostalgic about the brown M. The E train used to run from Jamaica Queens to the Rockaways in the '60s while the old "HH" was the midday and midnight shuttle to Rockaway Park at the same time. In the 70's and 80's there was the AA train which ran from 168th St to the WTC station as the 8th Avenue Local which is basically what they want the new K train to do. I agree with you on the skip-stop service because if I need to go one stop from a skipped station, I would have to ride up a few stops, cross over to the other side, catch the needed train and ride back down which is silly.

    I rode a KK train once maybe in late '70s from W 4 station, uptown 6th ave local, just a rush hour line from the J line over the Williamsburg Bridge up 6th Ave terminated at 57th street when that was a terminal. Very old cars, no public address system, It just showed up, stopped , opened doors with no announcement, closed doors and continued uptown.

    The K train used to be the KK which only ran during the rush hour from 57-6 to Jamaica-168th. Street. It was a local.

      That's correct! used to run the Brighton line with the D and Q until repairs on the Manhattan Bridge sent it to the West End First as a 4th avenue express the later local to Bay Parkway. Temporary became permanent

      I was thinking of (J) trains terminate at Broadway Junction - Broad St and have the (Z) do the full stretch via Express between Broad St and Jamaica-Center.

    If you wanna be technical there is official Bullets for the 8 and MJ Lines. While these didn't come up in actual signage, especially for the MJ, it is not hard to find the bullets on Wikipedia. Weirdly, the 8 did come up in World's Fair Low-V Rollsigns but just in Black and White obviously. When the R12s replaced the Low-Vs, the MTA was going to make black and white 8 rollsigns for the R12s but ran into a wall with money. It was known at this point the El was going to be "replaced" so many of the higher-ups saw no use in modifying rollsigns in bunch of R12s just for the line itself to be gone in 3 or 4 years. So they just threw up "Shuttle" instead. It's been speculated that if the R39s were built they'd exclusively would've had rollsigns for the 2, 5, 8, and MJ Lines.

    Well the JFK express ran for a minute and it apparently at that time appealed to certain people 🤷🏾‍♂️. I was a kid in NYC back then and that jingle is still in my head 😂 Them folks back in the day didn't mind paying $6.50. and to them it was safer. This was early 80s so yeah they didn't mind. Trust me 😄

    I agree with you the Brown M and the V was the foamer favorite, I say the V was pointless and useless because it parallel! along the E and F and very low ridership. I say good to the V and the Brown M I agree with you the current M is better & the 9 I agree with you and H I would say the same and Rockaway Park shuttle is the best during the summer weekends because it provides extra service into Rockaway Blvd from Rockaway Park instead of Terminating at Broad Channel especially, with the beach crowd. The JFK Express OMG that was pointless I agree to pay the premium fare ugh, also the Port Authority wouldn't provide transfer they are to greedy when it comes to collecting fares and stingy when having people pay the fare.

    They have plenty connections to the JFK from the subway to the buses. I take the different options all the time to that airport. One option is to catch the B15 bus at the last stop of the (3) train at New Lots Ave. Another is the Q3 Bus from 179 St- Jamaica (F) terminal, and a HOST of cab services throughout the City.

    Skip stop can make sense if the stop pairs are selected so that few people are inconvenienced and if the time saved end to end is more than the headway of the line. If so, then the required fleet is reduced by one and the average speed for passengers is increased.

    Late night C service 168 to WTC. Hopefully they might improve 8th ave once the interlocking at 30th st tower is fixed. I'm tired of dealing with confusion on my last local trip to Far Rock. The A begins local service in Manhattan too early. Last C outta 168 is the 2209 first local A outta 207 is the 2208 to Lefferts.

    The current M is better for the system, but there should be something serving the Montague connection to Nassau. Perhaps it should go down 4th local? Or maybe replace the B on Brighton so that the Q becomes the express. The B could then run to Bay Ridge via 4th Ave local. This would allow the R to run from Astoria to Coney Island via West End all local. Giving the R yard access and Deinterlining Queens Blvd.

    There's not enough riders along Jamaica Ave Line to increase frequency of J Service (unless some trains end at Chambers/Essex/Woodhaven Blvd), plus those along J/Z stops at Jamaica Center, WoodHaven Blvd, Broadway Junction do prefer the skip-stop service (saving 7-14 mins) to when there was no 'Z' service during budget cuts and only the 'J'. Inwood, Washington Heights & West Harlem Population booms made skip-stop 1/9 ineffective. When those stations were light (like St. Marys St E 143rd) years back, Riverdale Customers had a breeze into the City.
    Back then Airport Riders didn't mind the added $ as running express from Jay St directly to Howard Beach bypassed EXP Stations to avoid "riff-raff". With Condos along Fulton St & Stuyvesant Heights wanting Utica Ave Service, that couldn't happen today.

    The 8 train needed to be included in this list. Its replacement (the Bx55 bus) was cheaper and not time-effective.
    The 9 train was a mess. I feel that it was done to cater to the Riverdale, Bronx crowd, as most of us here in The Heights never asked for it.
    The JFK Express used to have an exclusive shuttle bus transfer at Howard Beach so that was part of the MTA's marketing pitch.

    The JFK express might not make sense, but I could see a premium service(with nicer cars and bathrooms) to Far Rockaway if it was built up for a lot of tourists to stay in hotels. Such a service would make sense to stop at the Airtrain station and then go directly to Manhattan from there. The two advantages it would have over the existing Ferry are weather and trips from the airport to Far Rockaway.

    Instead of the 9 train, 1 express service could of been a thing with select 1 trains during peak hours but for that 125th Street, 137th Street City College,145th Street, 200th St-Dyckman St,225th steet should be island platforms. (This is my opinion/my take on the route)

    The brown M was useless but it did allow west end riders another option between 36th street and Bay Parkway. It’s honestly not a foamers line, I don’t know how these kids justify that but that wasn’t the case. With how spotty N and R trains was it didn’t cause much of an issue. Bay Parkway they dumped went to the middle, and came right back out after a D train. The V was a 10 car line. The problem with the 9 it skipped too many heavily used stations. The J/Z is designed to save time during the peak time nothing more nothing less.
    The D has a tendency to bunch and left with big gaps and West End riders suffer the most from it because of the lack of another option at least to get to 36th for an express N.

    The idea of the skip stop was the DUMBEST idea. It saved no time getting to 96th Street or getting to Van cortlandt Park. What they should have used was the middle track express between 96th Street and 145th Street and between Dyckman Street and Van cortlandt Park

    Yeah the current (M) train is rough in terms of running - too much traffic caused in the 53 St Tunnel because it merges with the E F and R at different points along the line, and the service frequency makes the merges even tougher. One late train and the whole Queens Blvd line is messed up. Maybe the M via 63 St and F via 53 St middays and rush hours could help.

    Air train with the best is the best express line in the system and plus I had a catchy theme song train to the plane person 80s going through Brooklyn yeah it was terrible so it was one way to not get mugged on a subway. Plus I had free shuttle buses from Howard Beach to the airport terminals

Thats what i would like to see.. Maybe have those diamond E’s originate from Rockaway Park all the way to 179th Street…. Long ride, but it can run Fulton St Exp, 8th Ave Exp, Queens Blvd Exp and Hillside Ave Exp..
