    Really feel inspired by this video, thank you for your work! A recent change I've made - I no longer eat out in restaurants on work days, the context shifting by eating out was killing my afternoon productivity, I live close to the office so I go home and eat something (also saving money).

    Everytime I see a title like this my heart stops. I wonder, how many minutes will it take for these pearls of wisdom? I got to make breakfast, vacuum and file all of my notes. I wish, I had a personal assistant. My boss at work has me but at home I am lost. I do not have another soul in here.

    One small correction you should note regarding your Wi-Fi traffic.
    Typically, the traffic between your device and the wireless antenna at say a coffee shop is encrypted. No one could use an antenna to see what websites you’re on.
    What is a risk is a rogue fake Wi-Fi network. In that case, all your traffic could be going through this fake antenna before going to whatever servers you’re connecting to on the internet. In that case, a VPN service like ExpressVPN would be valuable. But typically, your Wi-Fi connection is encrypted between your device and the Wi-Fi antenna, also called an access point.

    Appreciate your answer to the stay-at-home parent and your recognition of the difficulty of full-time parenting and how you still need some time for yourself. It helps to hear someone say these things out loud and make it concrete. I did NOT appreciate the importance of breaks/solitude/downtime when I was home with very young children. I suspect other driven, achievement-oriented people who become full-time parents make the same mistake.

    A very nitpicky question, but why do you use "deep work" dogmatically, only about professional work (assuming this equals that you're paid for it). What if they are writing a book? Trying to learn music? Simply widening their knowledge? It would be precious to give back value to activities that don't directly produce monetary gain (yet?) or are long term pursuits. Given how valuable flow states and prolonged focused activity is especially for artistic practices, I really don't see the point to differentiate.

      I’ve started reading his book - he mentions early on how people like Carl Jung and Mark Twain isolated themselves from the world to allow for more focused thought and attention to a single subject. Not just ‘work’ work.

    He clearly has good points and thanks for that, but the self indulgent jokes about his own drawing is just distracting. Yes, we are not here for the drawing, yes, it's not great but that's okay. Either decide to develop better drawing skills or use tech to do it in a better way so you don't have to keep mentioning it.
    I am here to get the info to improve rapidly and personally prefer other forms of entertainment.
    Consider sticking to the points or maybe having a summary at the beginning without all the B.S... for those of us in the audience who don't enjoy this aspect of your vids.
    It's pretty cringe ... like watching what happens when 2 typical frat bros grow up and have their own podcast. (Yes, I am being pretty mean here I know.)

    Hi, Cal! Great video. Can you comment on where video games lie on the fast-slow distraction spectrum? Is there any difference between fast-loop multiplayer games like Fortnite and long narrative adventures like The Legend of Zelda? Can someone engage with a distraction in either a fast or slow way?

    • @arghya_333
      @arghya_333 8 месяцев назад +1

      This is something I was also wondering. Games can sometimes not feel so fun (when you are grinding or constantly losing to a dark souls boss for example) but the overall narrative is something you can dissect more deeper than a movie. So I would say it leans on the slower side (not talking about multiplayer or mindless games on the play store but story based ones). But then again they are really addicting so you basically lose your track of time, similar to a lot of those fast distractions.

      good points. i also have noticed that sometimes when playing tears of the kingdom it can feel like a chore lol but at the same time when it gets fun, i can get sucked in deep for a few hours.

    • @omeirai124
      @omeirai124 8 месяцев назад

      I think it's just as you said, it's contextual and depends on the type of game and how it makes your mind feel! Be honest with yourself and attentive to your reactions and whether or not it feels addictive

    Totally agree with doing work while the child is up. Yes it’s more peaceful later but if you wait until the afternoon or evening you will exhausted. Just a lesson I learned after three children.

      Absolutely. We are relearning this now as our daughter is almost 1 year old (and our son is 8). This whole past year has been a steep (re) learning curve. So much planning to work once the baby is asleep had ended in us crashing down exhausted as well.
      It’s been a year of reliving the definition of insanity but we are finally getting it 😢😅
