1. Discipline-builds identity of being capable - setup a core location to track everything related to your reinvention - build 3 keystone habits you do every day - a keystone habit is (1) tractable but (2) not trivial 2. Values-provides foundation and orientation - reconnect with your moral intuition (what defines a life well-lived, regardless of circumstances) - reconnect w/ (read, watch) something that grounded you - develop a personal code (how you approach life through good and bad times) - put rituals in place that connect you with your moral intuition 3. Control-over your time - implement multi-scale planning - capture household tasks to external system - automate and curtail strategically 4. Vision-aiming your life intentionally - choose 1 small area of your life (like a hobby) to overhaul - choose 1 large area of your life (like your career) to begin overhauling Edit: Changed "trackable" to "tractable" regarding keystone habits. Thanks @MattDiffey for pointing this out.
Nice notes - only thing was he said the habit should be tractable, not trackable (though tracking it isn't a problem). Basically he's saying it shouldn't be so trivial as to not actually involve any discipline (looking at the gym) but not so heavyweight that you're setting yourself up for failure with the rest of your life (spending 2 hours in the gym every day)
Today is day 1 for me to reinvent my life. Went to workout at 7am, going to work on my punctuality, read a minimum of 20 pages of a book everyday, reduce my tv/RUclips/social media, & being more focus on work. 🙏🏿
Punctuality is so much more important than so many people realize. In my field I see how punctuality seems to be related to how successful people are and how closely it’s related to “reputation” and how others view your character, and how in control or out of control of their lives people seem to be. It’s really foundational. It seems to be closely related to overuse of social media, the amount of sleep you get, the ability to focus, and to some extent, self-respect.
It worked! Followed your method in Sept 2023, and now my reinvention is fully locked in. It happened naturally as I was already in the right rhythm in Jan. Thank you for all of the care and thought you put into this video.
@@jaykey660 Thanks for asking! From Oct-Dec of last year, I focused ONLY on completing my daily keystone habits - without focusing on the results. Then, as I was quietly humming along - I sorta woke up one day in January and realised that I easily hit my big weekly sales targets, as well as my health indicators. Now, as of Mar 1, I’m thrilled to announce that it’s been pretty effortless achieving my targets this year. I’m actually back on this video now to reaffirm this process and stay on track for the rest of the year.
@@fishlestat I believe this process worked because: 1) it forced me to get SUPER clear about which keystone habits are most-certain to lead me to my goals. 2) After identifying those habits, I had 3-4 months to get REAL about doing them daily. 3) By actually time-blocking my schedule with said habits, my overwhelm lifted 4) Because I was already doing the habits well before January, all my efforts sorta compounded and I’ve been hitting my targets without struggle.
Today is 4 April and I'll be starting my journey on 5 April. My aim is to cure PCOS, lose weight, reach a healthy BMI, get admission in my dream school and pick-up badminton as a hobby.
All the best..I would be looking into losing the extra weight that I have put on, learn some stuff and do a job switch and complete side projects I have been putting off
As a muslim, the 5 daily prayers are a reminder of how to divide the days. The prayers are a mini yoga like workout and really connect you to a higher purpose. Thank you for a brilliant video!
It also is a way to follow the natural cycles in nature so prayers times are according the the stage of the day according to the sun. So in winter the prayers are at different times. Every muslim who prays knows the exact times the sun sets, and the time it appears in the morning. And then the in between times of the sun at its zenith and late afternoon and the prayers when there is no sun. Thank you for your kind remark.@@AHMspadina
I realized when my dad got ill, I have spent the last 5 years spending all my free time playing games, all my money on games, and a few nice trips but nothing of value. I coped that i got something out of it but i got nothing done. I actually dont regret it, because it has made it so much more clear what I have to do NOW. I have been waking up at 6 am taking a morning walk and not using my phone in the morning for an hour. I miss some days but every day the next day I try again. I have a list of things I can add into my morning as well. I have a new start now and this was helpful insight thank you.
Its been a while, but hows ur progress? Are you doing alright? I hope you were able to cut the game time significantly but still manage to enjoy life to the fullest.
Thanks for sharing your story. I’m in a similar situation as you but my gaming period is 12 years and my dad isn’t I’ll (yet). He will soon as he’s reaching his 79 bday this year. Playing game is my way of copping mechanism for my chronic depression. Due to circumstances and responsibility I had to moved from the States to Asia. I have been living in Asia for over a decade and never a day that I don’t hate having to live here. The moral of society here is so low with high rate of corruption along with eternal traffic congestion and air pollution. I have known for many years that I need to get my shtz together but I’m extremely depress to care. I know that I don’t want having to change due to situation forcing me like what you had been through. Reading your story just make more sense to me that the time of change is now. Thank you for your story . I hope everything came out in your favor and your dad are doing alright. 👊✌️❤
@buffbuffer8553 just a tip. If you run away from uncomfortable feelings by (for instance) playing video games, you can combat that by sitting in those feelings and writing (not typing) them out. Start with day 1, you feel like playing games to avoid the feelings, grab a pen & paper and write down how you are feeling, where you believe it comes from and try to not put all the blame on people, but stick to who you are, what choices you made, what the root causes are of your depression, what you could actually do to improve these root causes and what kind of professional help you need to heal those root causes. Do this everyday and you might find yourself having neglected your videogames for weeks or even months. Don't replace the games with something else like clubbing, drinking, ranting on the Internet, picking fights with siblings or friends or wiling out. Just try to sit in your emotions & express them on paper. When you are ready, you can share your writings with your therapist & make that emotional work easier.
Cal - We need you to do a new separate video series…. I am in desperate need of literally just starting over - including, learning the life principles, life lessons, and life basics that so many successful parents teach their kids but I never got growing up. Yes, I'm interested in learning the financial side of it all and I've been working on that but I desperately need those life lessons so many parents are no longer teaching their kids and so many kids are not picking up anywhere else in their childhood, teen years, and college days. I need a whole game plan - start to finish... "This is how you do this - these are the habits successful people do each day, each month, each year... these are the policies successful people live by, these are the processes they put in place for themselves, these are the systems they execute each day, week, month, and year for themselves... these are the mindsets they keep and live by. This is what I'm lookin for and this is why I so desperately need going into 2025. I need to re-invent myself from the ground up. I need someone to go back to square one and literally teach through these concepts, skills, techniques, life lessons as though they were putting together a video series to teach their own children. I want to know what processes, systems, and values are that successful live by and teach to their own children that I never got. If I could learn those, that would sure help me alot, and THEN, I can add back in, the financial piece as well because it truly is a 360. I do need all of it - I just need those foundational basics first that I very clearly miss growing up and have still missed even into adulthood - because I'm realizing that I don't know what I don't know so then I don't know the right questions to ask and I very definitely don't know what direction to point my focus in so I can learn the things I need to know just to literally be a better human but hopefully to also change my life's trajectory and become a successful human at that and create for myself, the ability to then give back. That's what so many of us need right now... every age group to be honest. Too many parents are not teaching it nowadays and too many kids are not picking it up anywhere else, not even once they get into their college years... because nobody's training these things anymore. I'd sure love to see you put together a full video series on this. There's a lot to talk about and alot to learn and it's time - we as a people need to level up.
I’m 61 years old and find the older I get the more I waste time on line. I have never been very disciplined but was better before the smart phone. I have known over the last couple of years that I needed something but couldn’t put my finger on what it was. This has helped me listening and I haven’t even started yet thank you.
for the last few years, I've done "new years" changes in Mid to Late fall. Nov 2021 - Stopped drinking alcohol (2020 - like a lot of people, I began drinking too much) June-Sept 2022 - Added new skill and completed Career change (included a 57% pay increase) Dec 2023 - Reinventing myself (still working on what this looks like, but this video was helpful)
Yes ! With ADHD! I did something like this! I got a binder , blank papers, and pens with separated labels likes referring too! Now it is more simple and easy. Even 2 binders is ok. It worked for me!
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🗓️ To reinvent your life in four months, start in September to align with the New Year's timeframe. 02:04 📝 When reinventing your life, set up a core document or folder to track commitments and systems. 03:30 🕰️ Identify three Keystone habits: one for your professional life, one for health and fitness, and one for personal well-being. 05:19 🤔 Reconnect with your moral intuition by revisiting meaningful books or movies that resonate with your values. 06:32 📜 Create a personal code as a roadmap for how you approach life, both in good and bad times. 07:53 🧘 Establish rituals that regularly reconnect you with your moral values and intuition. 09:02 📊 Implement multi-scale planning for your professional life, from quarterly plans to daily time blocking. 10:27 🏡 Extend planning to household tasks, including capturing, reviewing, and scheduling non-work-related responsibilities. 13:29 🔄 Automate and curtail tasks to minimize planning and scheduling efforts in both professional and personal life. 18:18 🎯 During the final step of reinvention, focus on overhauling specific areas of your life to make them more remarkable. 19:58 🎬 Example: A small overhaul could involve becoming a serious cinephile, including setting up a home theater and establishing a regular movie-watching routine. 21:33 📅 Implementing multi-scale planning can be done step by step. Start with Daily Time block planning, then add weekly and seasonal planning. 41:14 🎮 Incorporating occasional unstructured work sessions, like experimenting with code or color schemes, can boost creativity and focus during deep work sessions. This can complement your deep life framework in the control layer. 57:57 💼 If you're dealing with depression, seek professional help first to address disordered thinking patterns and symptoms. 01:00:56 📜 The Deep Life framework, with its structured and process-based approach, can be particularly useful for individuals dealing with depression. 01:00:56 📅 Building regular discipline, having a personal code, and establishing control over your life are key steps within the Deep Life framework that can help individuals with depression feel more grounded and empowered. 01:02:08 🌟 Creating remarkable aspects in your life, regardless of your mental state, can provide a sense of efficacy, autonomy, and persistent sources of value, which can be beneficial for those dealing with depression. 01:03:05 📈 Cal Newport discusses the importance of persevering and seeking professional help to achieve personal growth. 01:03:18 💪 My Body Tutor offers online coaching for health and fitness, focusing on building a customized plan and providing daily accountability. 01:05:21 💼 Policygenius simplifies the process of getting life insurance, making it easy to compare quotes and protect your loved ones. 01:06:58 📘 Cal Newport introduces his upcoming book, "Slow Productivity," which promotes a humanistic approach to productivity, emphasizing a richer and fuller life. 01:11:10 📚 Cal Newport mentions several books in the genre of "humanistic productivity," including "The 4-Hour Workweek," "Essentialism," "How to Do Nothing," "Do Nothing," and "4,000 Weeks." 01:13:26 📖 "Slow Productivity" is presented as a book that aims to refine humanity in a world dominated by inhuman definitions of productivity, emphasizing a balance between accomplishment and avoiding burnout. Thank you. I navigate life with challenging depression and anxiety that began in my freshman and sophomore years at Stanford. It was very debilitating particularly during the first few years. I took time off, focused on my career, and have made progress in different areas of my life. Fast forward 10+ years, I decided to return to school last year. I appreciate the insights you shared on how to pursue the deep life while managing depression.
Many people talk about "Reinventing yourself" but do not give any practical ways to accomplish the reinvention. You are excellent at breaking down the steps needed to actually achieve your life transformation. I liked the examples you gave and your video helped me a lot to get started and to stay on track. Much thanks.
As for depression I keep a tracking graph. I have suffered depression for many years. It helps to look at a chart you make to see that you feel better than last tuesday or I have done better than last month or the last week. Today was the pits how can I help myself make tomorrow better. Keep it positive. This along with therapy helped me to get on top of things more often than not. There are bad days but more good ones now than bad.
I've been trying self reinvention since last year and have hit the walls time and time again as most of the processes I was following were too intellectual. Imagine I've now find a process explained in such a simple way step by step that I really resonate with....❤...Right now I'm cleaning out my garage to reveal my small but workable home gym... Today is the day. The Process begins I shall comment daily on this video for the next 4 months ...Thank you Sir...
This came at the right time! 27:09 this is my life right now. I just had my 43rd bday on 2 Sept. and I need change for my entire life!! It is almost Spring in South Africa, so to be ready for Summer will be cool.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Are you okay? What kind of reinvention do you have in mind? I personally feel shared social spaces help when your grieving. Look for a new fitness group or club that interests you. Praying for your wondering soul, happy healing.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🗓️ Plan a four-month life reinvention starting in September to be completed by New Year's. 01:37 📋 Begin with discipline, setting up a core system to track your commitments and establish three keystone habits. 05:35 💡 Reconnect with your moral intuition, create a personal code, and establish rituals to reinforce your values. 08:50 ⏰ Move to the control layer, which involves multi-scale planning for work, household planning for non-work tasks, and automating and curtailing to manage your time effectively. 19:03 🌟 In the vision layer, undertake a small overhaul in an area of your life (e.g., hobbies) to make it remarkable and begin planning for a larger, exciting overhaul (e.g., career or living situation). 21:33 🔄 Implementing a small overhaul in your life involves creating concrete goals and establishing new habits or systems. 22:16 🎬 A concrete step in a small overhaul could be enrolling in an online course or reading books to enhance your knowledge in a specific area. 23:40 🏆 Consider a larger overhaul in your life by planning your ideal lifestyle and making major changes to get closer to it. 25:10 📅 The timeline for implementing a small overhaul and the deep life stack spans four months, with specific focus on different aspects of life in each month. 29:09 🔄 Gradually implement multi-scale planning by starting with Daily Time Block Planning, then adding Weekly and Seasonal Planning. 41:44 🤹 Incorporating unstructured work sessions, like playful coding experiments, can complement deep work sessions and enhance overall focus and creativity. 42:23 🧠 Separate intense deep work sessions from preparatory and fiddling sessions to minimize cognitive context shifts and maintain focus. 45:49 🚶♂️ Avoid the passion mindset that constantly seeks the "perfect" job and career; instead, adopt a lifestyle-centric career planning approach. 48:09 📅 Create a clear vision of your ideal lifestyle in five to ten years, encompassing all aspects of your life. 53:57 🌱 Focus on professional help first if dealing with depression symptoms, and then adopt a structured and process-based approach like the Deep Life to gradually rebuild your life. 01:00:42 🧘♀️ Develop a code to live by during both good and challenging times to provide a sense of purpose and stability. 01:02:21 🌟 Build remarkable aspects into your life regardless of your mental state to enhance autonomy and efficacy amidst depressive symptoms. 01:03:05 📚 Cal Newport discusses the benefits of sticking with self-improvement efforts, even with professional help. 01:03:18 💪 My Body Tutor offers an online coaching program to help with health and fitness consistency, providing customized plans and daily check-ins. 01:04:54 🏋️♂️ Adam offers Deep Questions podcast listeners 50% off the first month of My Body Tutor services. 01:05:06 💼 Policy Genius simplifies the process of getting life insurance, making it easy to compare quotes from top insurers. 01:06:42 💡 Cal Newport unveils the cover of his upcoming book, "Slow Productivity," which focuses on a more humanistic approach to productivity. 01:08:35 🌟 "Slow Productivity" is part of a broader movement in the book world, emphasizing humanistic productivity that supports a richer, fuller human life. 01:13:54 📖 The cover of "Slow Productivity" reflects a departure from the traditional business book cover and represents the book's focus on refining humanity in a tech-dominated world. I just want to say thank you. I’ve found myself in a rut. I needed clear and concise instructions and frankly some advice on how to go about changing up a few things. It’s not by accident that you popped up on my feed.
@3:54 3 keystone habits @5:31 reconnect with your moral values @6:39 code @7:16 rituals @8:50 Control Layer @9:49 Multiscale Plan (work-related) @11:29 Household Planning
How did i not know you had a youtube channel???? Your book (how to be a staight A student) was literally my bible back in 2014 when I was just starting college. The book was so well laid out, it was such a good foundation to build responsible habits and time management skills.
Glad I am not the only one! I have read deep work and digital minimalism and just stumbled on this and I had no idea that Dr. Newport had his podcast. I guess since his target audience optimizes time, I guess they wouldn’t be the first to know 😅
Dude. You’re getting a million views for this. Talk about simple actions that help people change their life. An Ex-con can totally feel empowered by this with no schooling. Who doesn’t has a book or song that’s shaped what we love and value. Thanks brother
The greater the automated income you can build, the freer you will become. Taking the first step is the hardest, but 5 houses later living off automated income since July 6, 2016. You've got to start taking steps to achieve your goal.
All passive income ideas work as long as you put the work in. I focus more on cryptos, NFTs, real estate crowdfunding and IDOs. With the assistance of a financial consultant, I'm doing well for myself.
Most people simply enter the Trading market without comprehending matters like this. The first stage in building money is determining your goals and risk tolerance, which you may do on your own or with the assistance of a financial counselor who works with a verified Finance agency. And also you can learn the facts about saving and investing and create a clear plan, you should be able to acquire financial security over time and enjoy the benefits of income management.
Thank you so much for the advice. Your coach was simple to discover online. I did my research on him before I scheduled our phone call. He appears knowledgeable based on his online resume.
Exactly why i enjoy market decisions being guided by a professional, seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk management and market experience, been using the expertise and guidance of Gregory Thomas Patchak, for over 5years+ and I've netted over $3million in that time frame..
I’m reading Ultralearning right now and it’s pretty inspiring. I’m wasting my life working retail right now but luckily got a job in Japan teaching. Before I go I want to get rid of a little belly and learn some skills for when I get back. Discipline is the hardest aspect to me that I struggle with constantly
Portions in Japan are smaller, the food has fewer additives, and people are more likely to get around on foot, bicycle, and transit. Even if you don't lose as much weight as you hoped before you go, you will likely lose weight while living there (assuming you are American).
I am. Im like skinny fat. Just got a little belly. Not even super noticeable if I was wearing a suit, but I did want to tone it out. Also to learn better habits so when I get back I don't just gain it back.@@ifetayodavidson-cade5613
I lived in and worked in Japan. I found clarity and health. Went and weighed 238 pounds and left weighing 168. Exercise, running at night and the culture of eating less food. Go for it.
For those of you complaining the video is slow, watch it at 1.5x speed. Go to the gear icon and set a speed of your choosing. For those with a keyboard, learn the shortcut for controlling speed. It's shift + > for speed-up and shift + < for slow-down.
I found value in the first 30 minutes of this. Really good stuff. I also had a buzzing question regarding applicability for me, which a google search found this quote that resonated, "I also learned that it’s possible to write an entire book about productivity and lose sight of the fact that different people are going to have different circumstances, both at home and at work." That was a good reminder to use the tools that work for you and discard the tools and systems that are a bad fit for your work and personal life. I appreciate that Cal shares this pretty thorough description of what works for him. There are things I will try from this that I think will work for me too. Thank you Cal.
Holy smokes, this was life changing! I've read so many productivity books, watched talks etc, but this is so applicable! Also, I love your answer to the question of changing focus all the time, the grass being greener etc. Amazing, thanks so much!
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It literally was the answer to my asking, “k now where do I begin”, to reprogram my world that is. Fancy meeting you here as the first episode suggested on RUclips. Colour schemed note taking necessary and executed. And the countdown begins t minus 4 months, and, go! Thanks guys! Subscribed!
First time listener here. Thank you Cal. This was very useful. I've set a countdowner timer to 13 Dec 2023 and noted the timelines you suggested. My other aha was shifting from a passion mindset to craftsman mindset! Slow productivity is also now added to my lexicon. I've subscribed. Thanks and kudos to you and the team!😊
@youtubescholar What happened was that I have my personal code in place, my disciplines are in place as my morning routine and I'm finalising my Life Map for 2024 this weekend. Thank you Cal! The deep work concept has shifted me positively forward and my productivity has doubled 😊 Plus airplane mode is my new fav productivity phone feature 😂
What's difficult for people with chronic illness, working out is like an uphill battle. Just want to bring awareness to some people who have a hard time with this.
Most are not aware of the beliefs that are formed in the aftermath of significant trauma in their life which will block them from benefitting from brilliant and direct instruction like this.
I agree trauma really is a huge blocker that stops a lot of this from working. Those with CPTSD will struggle to get to a point they really follow this because of so many negatives against them. I think trying to find a community can help a lot. I really don't grow without people.
Today is 31/07/2024 I am starting to work on self and my skills I am going to be a better version till January 2025 I have 5 months to work on self improvement and I hope i am going to make this happen thank you for sharing this info and making me believe that yes i can work on skills and improve a lil every single day so i wouldn't have any regret after 60.
Thank you for this video. I'm big into personal development and have obtained many goals in my life. I have my 10 life pillars, my value statements, my why statements, and "what if I don't practice my habits" statements, my daily, weekly and monthly practices; and a weekly accountability / prayer group. I show up - whether I'm doing my very best or not. I took a free course "The Science of Wellbeing" and I learned from this course, that a high percentage of people don't know what really makes them happy. Kindness, social connection, time affluence, mind control, and healthy practices, are things this research says we should focus on. I shifted my strict - working on goals, to merely doing my predetermined practices, incorporating more of the Science Wellbeing practices, and I loosened my grip on attaining "my" goals. I'm very pleased with my life and I've found a good balance of planning, taking action, allowing things to flow naturally and having fun. God bless 🙏
Thanks Cal, this is really insightful! I'm in the process of overhauling various aspects in my life, and from experience I would re-order some of the steps, as follows: Control -> Values -> Discipline -> Plan The reason for this is that I found overcommitments to be the reason why I need to overhaul in the first place... Thus I first needed to really pare down and say "no" to things, in order to really get the breathing room to be able to re-connect to the values and what's important for me. In re-assessing what's important, I can then be in a position to adjust the disciplines and plan to do what's important. Thank you sharing so much of your wisdom with us!
I enjoyed this episode. Took down two pages of notes from here. Now, if I may add something on the question of a deep life while having depression - one, maybe recognize that a mental health issue could be as debilitating as a physical health issue, in the way that if we have an actual deep and painful physical injury that's getting in the way of our paying attention to a deep life, we should take steps to have it treated first. Also, in an attempt to scoop water out of the proverbial flooded boat, we could consider reconnecting with activities that we used to enjoy doing for their sake. Anhedonia is a real issue, but we can find sources of joy from some activities, if we made an effort to engage them.
Wow this is great. Right on time. I’m going to do my best to use this plan to structure my life and get through my IT studies and hit my fitness goals by 12/31.
Extremely timely video!!! I was just trying to plan the next few months for myself and felt quite overwhelmed. I’m a single parent raising a 10 year old , work part time , with home projects and maintaining my home… trying to squeeze in some kind of an exercise routine… This video was very helpful. I took notes and am going to start on your system! Thanks again..!
I’m going to follow. Perfect timing. We’re in July now so by November for me then. Unless of course I did a lot of the legwork all-ready. Just leaving a comment so I don’t lose the video and I am just a minute in. Just did a major straightening out stuff and can finally concentrate on how I wanted to get organized- digitally or whatever. Space to concentrate on that now. My start date for this is tomorrow then. Glad to find a video that’s right up my alley on things to do.
Thank you Marty Byrde, who knew accounting for the cartel would be such a transferable skill for life development. In all seriousness thank you Cal for this video and system it couldn’t have came at a better time!
August 2024 - discipline - have one place to track this. And also habits (one should be about awe. Meditation, nature, about quality) - have a values document. What it means for a life well lived. Go to books that ground you in life. And also have a personal code. A roadmap for living. Also have rituals as part of this that connect you to this - control - get freedom and get control of all things in your life. Multi scale plan = quarter or semester plan. Use that to create weekly plan. Use that to do daily time block plan. He had one - use the info you learn to automate and make things less time consuming or just get rid of them entirely - have a vision for areas of your life that are remarkable - don’t follow passion. Instead have clear vision of life, feel like, daily experience, etc. and then work back from there. That way, there are multiple paths you can take to get there. There isn’t just one path - what are all the lifestyle aspects? Start with that. Next, see the paths/jobs you have to get there.
I'm skirting a deep depression over the fact that I have NEVER been an ambitious or motivated person. I'm just lucky to have landed in a comfortable prison. At this advanced age it's terrifying to know that I have to leave this comfort zone and find my way with no one on or by my side. Where do I start?
I've been on the floor several times in my life. I hate the overuse of the word literally, but literally on the floor wondering why I should get up and how I can do it. Every time was different but I always got it. I got tricked into taking over a support group (the leader had taken a teaching job in the middle east but didn't tell me that when she PUSHED me to be the leader for just one meeting). Where are you Ann? Haha but i would thank her now. I was so busy with this group. Everyone was so lost and thankful. Find an in person group of anything. Even walking. And after you decide you like the group, volunteer to help. That's it. It's magical. ❤
This is one of the many analytical models to create new behaviors -- the one KEY MISSING PART is how to handle ones emotions and feelings in all of that. This the only ingredient that's always missed. No decision or control is made without emotions or feelings about them. Vision and bielief can help with that, but even changing visions and belief to something else will create emotional tension. No one addresses that!
I just found this channel Elizabeth Filips is her name, I believe. She talks about emotional aspects regarding learning, creating new habits and so on. She specifically mentioned ADHD too and the challenges that come with it (not feeling intrigued or inspired and therefore being literally unable to concentrate on a subject or topic). I’ve only started watching her channel but so far I’ve got a good impression 😊
Excellent. Thanks. Y’ve done A Lot of preparation. I re-listened to the second half of this video a few times. (1.) I am reminded that I need to emulate the schedule (and items on that schedule) from the meditation🧘🏽♀️ retreat that I occasionally attend. This includes drinking tea only as my 5 pm dinner(!!!). Why? I lost weight there, but, lately… it’s been coming back. Gotta stop that. (2.) I also began morning visualizing myself doing things that I want myself to do then, actually following “her”, instead of of just thinking about it and thinking and thinking. (3.) I made an appointment with a business accountability coach (who didn’t take me on) who, based on my descriptions of the types of focus I did re work I’ve done (or want to do), she volunteered to me that I should likely return to another profession (video editing), though I don’t have 💰 for a proper editing suite. I DO, however, have contacts re smaller documentary fests😃. (4.) I’m definitely curious about the books you’ve mentioned and will look them up. Cheers🕊️.

Now, to add my context regarding why the economy is struggling in the UK: : The UK economy is facing significant challenges due to a combination of factors. The ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have disrupted businesses, supply chains, and consumer confidence. Lockdowns, restrictions, and shifts in consumer behavior have led to reduced economic activity in various sectors. Additionally, the uncertainty surrounding the UK's exit from the European Union, commonly referred to as Brexit, has created trade disruptions, regulatory changes, and increased costs for businesses. This uncertainty has made it more challenging for companies to plan and invest for the future.
l just withdrew my profits a week ago, it was so shocking when I withdrew $32,450 knowing I invested $3,000. I wish I could reinvest but, too much bills
4 months doesn't seem like much time, but it really is enough to see a difference in your physical fitness if you're consistent. I'm curious how much can happen in other areas of life.
It's just an arbitrary timeline he picked because it was convenient to what was remaining of the year and most likely to views. When he actually speaks about the timeline he doesn't use any congruence or examples to tie in why or how his ideas work within that period--just more word salad is served up.
This was my first suggested episode and it couldn't have come at a better time since I've been thinking about doing this. Thank you for this awesome guide! There are no coincidences.

In 4 month my life collapsed completely. This is the amount of time cancer needed to took my fiancé away from me. I was supposed to be a wife, a mom, have a home, be happy and live the life I always wanted. None of that happened 😢 and I am wasting every month and year after that happened because I can’t fulfill any of this dreams alone 😞😓 my existence is pointless 😞
Hi! I’m sorry to hear about your loss, experience and situation. If you feel that you cannot share your thoughts & feelings with family and friends, please seek help from the professionals. And no, your existence is not pointless. Please take care & seek help. x
I hope you've reached out to a professional about what you're going through. I can imagine that this past year has been very tough for you and I hope you're doing alright. I hope you realize how much you deserve to live for yourself. Imagine a future daughter of yours saying what you've said, and how hurt you would feel thinking she was choosing not to live for herself. Now take that narrative to yourself. I don't know you or your family, but I know that someone loved you enough that you both wanted to get married. That love they felt for you is because you are someone worth loving. I hope you try to spread the legacy of their life with yours, while building some real love for yourself. You know so well that everything can change so quickly, but you have yet to entertain the idea things can quickly change for the better around you and within you. You don't have to carry this. It doesn't have to be this heavy. If you stick around, one day it won't be. You can grow around this grief, one day at a time.
My mom died around the time this video came out. I'm only now picking up the pieces. I can't fully imagine what you're going through, but I remember how hard this year has been for me. I am so sorry for your loss, I hope you are doing better today.
Bet there are people with no home, food or clothes that feel it must be nice to have to put those things on a list… it’s always about perspective, always.
1. Discipline-builds identity of being capable
- setup a core location to track everything related to your reinvention
- build 3 keystone habits you do every day
- a keystone habit is (1) tractable but (2) not trivial
2. Values-provides foundation and orientation
- reconnect with your moral intuition (what defines a life well-lived, regardless of circumstances)
- reconnect w/ (read, watch) something that grounded you
- develop a personal code (how you approach life through good and bad times)
- put rituals in place that connect you with your moral intuition
3. Control-over your time
- implement multi-scale planning
- capture household tasks to external system
- automate and curtail strategically
4. Vision-aiming your life intentionally
- choose 1 small area of your life (like a hobby) to overhaul
- choose 1 large area of your life (like your career) to begin overhauling
Edit: Changed "trackable" to "tractable" regarding keystone habits. Thanks @MattDiffey for pointing this out.
You took a great note.
You are a hero!
Thanksss
Nice notes - only thing was he said the habit should be tractable, not trackable (though tracking it isn't a problem). Basically he's saying it shouldn't be so trivial as to not actually involve any discipline (looking at the gym) but not so heavyweight that you're setting yourself up for failure with the rest of your life (spending 2 hours in the gym every day)
@MattDiffey Hey thanks for pointing this out! At 2x speed, it really sounds like he said "trackable" 😅 I fixed the initial comment
Today is day 1 for me to reinvent my life. Went to workout at 7am, going to work on my punctuality, read a minimum of 20 pages of a book everyday, reduce my tv/RUclips/social media, & being more focus on work. 🙏🏿
Fucking A!
@@FoxValley75 wow thanks for this insight. Makes me even more excited with this new change
We can do it!
how's everything going ?
It worked! Followed your method in Sept 2023, and now my reinvention is fully locked in. It happened naturally as I was already in the right rhythm in Jan. Thank you for all of the care and thought you put into this video.
Could you describe the result?
@alisonseymour2546
Would you care to share a bit with us please? 😅

As a muslim, the 5 daily prayers are a reminder of how to divide the days. The prayers are a mini yoga like workout and really connect you to a higher purpose. Thank you for a brilliant video!
I have always admired that aspect of your religion. I didn't know about the daily divisions though. Cool!
Thank you for explaining it like that! I'll also try to divide the day with my prayers

How about taking care of your dad
Today is my first day to reinvent my life. Wish me luck!
All the best! You can do it 💪🏻💪🏻

Me too! Commenting here to keep myself accountable. Today is March 27, 2024.
let us know your update.

Let's do it!

Let's do it!!!
It's been 4 months. I'm curious how it went? Were you successful? Are you still on the path?
for the last few years, I've done "new years" changes in Mid to Late fall.
Nov 2021 - Stopped drinking alcohol (2020 - like a lot of people, I began drinking too much)
June-Sept 2022 - Added new skill and completed Career change (included a 57% pay increase)
Dec 2023 - Reinventing myself (still working on what this looks like, but this video was helpful)
really appreciated man.
Back here on Sept 1 to do this 4-month reinvention for the second time 🎉
What happened the first time??
Yes ! With ADHD! I did something like this! I got a binder , blank papers, and pens with separated labels likes referring too! Now it is more simple and easy. Even 2 binders is ok. It worked for me!
I have ADHD also, I'm going to try this... the task paralysis is a real beast!
What categories did you label the sections ?
I might have it, but I know binders help me a lot.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🗓️ To reinvent your life in four months, start in September to align with the New Year's timeframe.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🗓️ Plan a four-month life reinvention starting in September to be completed by New Year's.

Dude. You’re getting a million views for this. Talk about simple actions that help people change their life. An Ex-con can totally feel empowered by this with no schooling.
Who doesn’t has a book or song that’s shaped what we love and value. Thanks brother
The greater the automated income you can build, the freer you will become. Taking the first step is the hardest, but 5 houses later living off automated income since July 6,

What kind of investment would you advise? And what is the best way to follow it?
Go for it.
@@stevenbrutosky521 Sweet. I only weigh 150 but got a little pooch. So my struggle will be adding a little bulk and tone
For those of you complaining the video is slow, watch it at 1.5x speed. Go to the gear icon and set a speed of your choosing. For those with a keyboard, learn the shortcut for controlling speed. It's shift + > for speed-up and shift + < for slow-down.
watching it at normal speed helped to ingrain the concepts and the total system in myself (and making notes as well)😀
I found value in the first 30 minutes of this.
I'm doing this reinvention 'challenge' and decided to vlog the journey! I'm excited! Thank you Cal for this 💪🏻
So it has been 4 months now how did it go
Holy smokes, this was life changing! I've read so many productivity books, watched talks etc, but this is so applicable! Also, I love your answer to the question of changing focus all the time, the grass being greener etc. Amazing, thanks so much!
8:36 "drawing another box here beautifully. Definitely looks the same as the other boxes."
so true 😆
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It literally was the answer to my asking, “k now where do I begin”, to reprogram my world that is. Fancy meeting you here as the first episode suggested on RUclips. Colour schemed note taking necessary and executed. And the countdown begins t minus 4 months, and, go!
Thanks guys! Subscribed!
Hey can you tell me what Code and Reconnect means in the Discipline layer? English isn't my first language so I don't understand it well.
Quite similar to your experience - what landed me here.. let's probably check-in in January .. I hope! :D
You have 3 days! I really wanna know what it's been like! Keep slaying!
Oh it’s YOU! I’ve read your books 3000 times over, and I was hoping to meet you in person one day! I now know you have a RUclips channel!
I'm so glad Cal Newport has now a RUclips channel
You are quite late.
I am starting this now. I would like to end the year on a much stronger note and begin the new one with bigger goals.
Me too. Good Luck. 🫶🏽💜
Me too!
me too! 🍀🍀
Me too! Let's do our best! 💪
Add the update here of whatever outcome you had.
So what happened?
@youtubescholar What happened was that I have my personal code in place, my disciplines are in place as my morning routine and I'm finalising my Life Map for 2024 this weekend. Thank you Cal! The deep work concept has shifted me positively forward and my productivity has doubled 😊 Plus airplane mode is my new fav productivity phone feature 😂

Thankful for this. I really needed to learn that everything takes time and I'm not going to be a new person in one week. Everything is trained.
Cal is doing a great social service. Thank you.
It's always great to renew goals and revisit New Year's Resolutions
It was fun to see Cal dive into the drawings as well.
I'm in the process of overhauling various aspects in my life, and from experience I would re-order some of the steps, as follows:
Control -> Values -> Discipline -> Plan
The reason for this is that I found overcommitments to be the reason why I need to overhaul in the first place...
This video is a lifesaver right now! Best comprehensive strategy for me to begin my reinvention before my birthday ❤
Wow this is great. Right on time. I’m going to do my best to use this plan to structure my life and get through my IT studies and hit my fitness goals by 12/31.
I think this is what I need needed to hear. Thank you.
Extremely timely video!!! I was just trying to plan the next few months for myself and felt quite overwhelmed. I’m a single parent raising a 10 year old , work part time , with home projects and maintaining my home… trying to squeeze in some kind of an exercise routine…
This video was very helpful. I took notes and am going to start on your system! Thanks again..!

1st time listener I love what I’m hearing and so glad I found your channel!
This is GOLD. Thank you for sharing such eye opening advice!
Love that this episode has gone viral. Congrats, Cal! The book cover reveal was genuinely exciting. Can’t wait for it.

- discipline - have one place to track this. And also habits (one should be about awe. Meditation, nature, about quality)
- have a values document. What it means for a life well lived. Go to books that ground you in life. And also have a personal code. A roadmap for living. Also have rituals as part of this that connect you to this
- control - get freedom and get control of all things in your life. Multi scale plan = quarter or semester plan. Use that to create weekly plan. Use that to do daily time block plan. He had one
- use the info you learn to automate and make things less time consuming or just get rid of them entirely
- have a vision for areas of your life that are remarkable
- don’t follow passion. Instead have clear vision of life, feel like, daily experience, etc. and then work back from there. That way, there are multiple paths you can take to get there. There isn’t just one path
- what are all the lifestyle aspects? Start with that. Next, see the paths/jobs you have to get there.
I bought the planner yesterday. It’s very well laid out and a nice size. Looking forward to clarifying my days, week and quarter!
I like how he says “drawling” instead of drawing 😊
I'm skirting a deep depression over the fact that I have NEVER been an ambitious or motivated person. I'm just lucky to have landed in a comfortable prison. At this advanced age it's terrifying to know that I have to leave this comfort zone and find my way with no one on or by my side. Where do I start?
You watched this video. Start here. So what you’re STARTING alone? The people you need will join you on your path when the time is right.
@@ddfelder2 Thank you. Just the fact that you answered me makes me feel better...which proves your point!
Hi there
@@jackiegerarde9938 Wow! That's fantastic advice. Thank you! You've given me something real to work with.
Thank you I’ve been all over the place, need something to help me take control of my life.
I promise myself to change
Have 2 month left to practice SATs for which I did not prepare 😂, using DEEP work now
Lol 😂
if you have a relatively good fundation , two months for SAT is more than enough, but it depens of your bases.
Even one month is enough. My kid only spent less than one month to increase the SAT score from1490 to 1590
Excellent.
Cheers🕊️.

Now, to add my context regarding why the
economy is struggling in the UK:
:
The UK economy is facing significant challenges
due to a combination of factors. The ongoing
effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have
disrupted businesses, supply chains, and
consumer confidence. Lockdowns, restrictions,
and shifts in consumer behavior have led to
reduced economic activity in various sectors.
Additionally, the uncertainty surrounding the
UK's exit from the European Union, commonly
referred to as Brexit, has created trade
disruptions, regulatory changes, and increased
costs for businesses. This uncertainty has made it more challenging for companies to plan and invest for the future.
l just withdrew my profits a week ago, it was so
shocking when I withdrew $32,450 knowing I
invested $3,000. I wish I could reinvest but, too
much bills
I I'm from Australia and I have been Investing and earning massively with the help of Mrs Sophia , all thanks to her
4 months doesn't seem like much time, but it really is enough to see a difference in your physical fitness if you're consistent.

Have you started? I'm going to watch this video and start tomorrow (it's nightime here in the UK).
This was my first time joining you. I looked forward to putting this into practice
Hope you're doing good ❤ you got this you'll see
One year later. Checking in on you. Hope you are doing better, and that you got some sense of community 💞
My mom died around the time this video came out. I'm only now picking up the pieces. I can't fully imagine what you're going through, but I remember how hard this year has been for me. I am so sorry for your loss, I hope you are doing better today.
wait a minute.. this is gold, and yet free?? i'll make sure to apply this one. Thanks Cal!
Cal Newport discusses a 4-month life reinvention plan, starting with discipline, values, and control, aiming for a more organized and purposeful life.
11:36 - must be great not to have to plan for cleaning, grocery shopping or laundry (to name a few) under “household”
Bet there are people with no home, food or clothes that feel it must be nice to have to put those things on a list… it’s always about perspective, always.
