We go hands-on with the DJI Mavic, a foldable drone that's half the size and weight of the Phantom 4 quadcopter. We take it for a test flight, check out its 4K video quality, and chat with DJI about its unique features, including a new computer vision tracking system and wi-fi transmitter control. For me who doesn't own a car this would be perfect. Fits nicely in a backpack, no protruding things that can be damaged when folded up and it has similar performance to its bigger brothers. Love it!
I suggest having a pre-upload checklist for videos that includes checking the audio to insure that you mix your audio sources from mono sources to a stereo output so we don't get each mic source/channel in a different ear. This seems to have happened quite a few times. Love all the hard work you guys are putting into your videos, just want to make sure you keep QC in your workflow! Liked as always.

dannydaw59 There's no way to fix it once it's uploaded, the beginning section with norm is totally offset, you're right though it is in both but the left channel is so much quieter it might as well not be there.
My left and right ears loved this, albeit separately.

Great review. You ask really important questions that get to the bottom of the story and help us think of things not immediately noticed.
So I guess it all comes down to what your goals and needs are. With this in mind, I still think the Phantom 4 has the edge on the Mavic for my needs. Need something that will practically fit in your back pocket? Forget about the Phantom 4. Want something that you can hand catch easily and notice a slightly better picture with? Forget about the Mavic. At the end of the day, they're both great drones and are amazing pieces of technology. What you need them for will ultimately decide which one you should be the proud owner of.
That drone is the best thing to have ever come out of China, I need to have it!

GoPro are similar to apple in the way they have fantastic marketing and marketing budget which wins a lot of people over, as they don't hear or even bother researching other products. Not saying the Karma isn't a great device. I bet we will see Karma owners everywhere that have never heard of dji never mind explain why they bought one or the other.
Brian Eastwood The Karma cant really be classed as a Drone product. because its not, its a drone, and a stabilizer. I will always stick with DJI because yes, gopro may have been making cameras longer, but DJI has been making drones longer, and have proven technologies, and I would prefer my drone not to crash, than have my drone crash, but get a slightly better shot. Even though 1km is abysmal when it comes to flying. Cant wait for my Mavic
It'll certainly be something people buy though where they may have ended up buying a Mavic. I've already ordered a mavic, no hesitation for me. I travel a lot and ride the motorcycle, and while I've a good solution for the P4, it's size is an issue. I wouldn't say the GoPro will be better footage, I mostly use D-log (s-log with my a7r2) and would miss the post colour alteration available if I used a gopro. Definitely about DJi trusty software, mine lost contact on a mountain dirt road yesterday and I'd been following my car for a mile and it flew all the way back on it's own. Couldn't believe it was there when I drove back.
I want one to test! I have been flying DJI for 5 years and this one looks the best!

Every tested video needs more Simone or Adam
it's always funny watching someone fly a dji quad. A lot of people need to just get experience at a lower level learning to fly like the sports quad pilot. It's that experience that builds confidence and control. Plus it helps when flying higher up with orientation.
I agree. It will also improve your video-scenes as you've learned to make moves that you won't be eager to try out if a DJI (or comaprable quad) is your first one.

This thing is epic. I have always wanted a drone but have never been drawn to the phantoms and the inspire is just way to expensive and big. If I had the cash on hand right now I would order this asap! I dig it a lot.

This is the first video I've experienced the real effect of stereo sound on the new iPhone 7. Most RUclips vids don't have their sound mixed properly.
I had no problems catching it from the sky, I like the narrower FOV it feels more cinematic than the wide angle of the P4, and also it doesn't you know... fall from the sky like the Karma.

When this new Mavic drone is released , hopefully the Phantom 3 and 4 will get even cheaper than what they are now , I just like the solid look of the Phantoms , it gives you the thought that it can handle anything

Video quality is poor when compared to Phantom 4 and Gopro Karma. Heck my Phantom 3 even looks better
This is not the goal of this drone.
Its the field of view problem, i still love my p3, same resolution, diffrent camera still. I get that it is meant for different people
different optics, same sensor. You're trading FOV for portability.
I noticed that too, I could be the color profile settings on the camera, It looked a little over saturated/added contrast. If its that same sensor as the P4 I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get the same image quality. Iv'e seen some other Mavic demo videos where the footage looked fine. I'm guessing its just that the color profile settings are bad in this video.

With the compression on RUclips it is a waste. If you really want to see 4K go to Vimeo. Anything on RUclips looks like shit by comparison

if i understood him correctly, it's not replacing lightbridge - he said occusync is a software solution rather than hardware change, so i think what's happening is its still lightbridge, but is using a software to scan the spectrum, detecting what frequencies are in use by other sources in the vicinity and selecting frequencies for transmission that are away from those sources of interference. it's "smart" lightbridge, if you will. That's my takeaway anyway - could be wrong.

It's not possible to build a quad of this form factor and with these features for "way less" than 1k... I have a collection of racing quads that I know how to fly without a chip flying for me, and I'm still interested in buying one of these. Also not everyone wants to put up with the hours and frustration associated with building their own quad...
One question that is a make or break for me and that's aerial shots from 200m or even to the max, 400m. This is important as I'm surrounded by mountains and I need to get quite high to get the peninsulas and the Atlantic Ocean in Sw Ireland. My phantom has no problems with this, however, this is small and light, motors aren't as powerful and a gust could flip this (I presume) at a pretty low altitude. As soon as I see someone take it up to the max height and it holds solid, it's a no brainer! No more lugging carry bags AND your own hiking gear for miles. I'll give it time as someone soon will do this and report back. It truly is a fabulous piece of engineering but I do worry as I'm based in SW Ireland and the winds are pretty gusty. Saying that, the Phantom handles it with ease. I just think it's fantastic and if it handles gusty winds, I'm going to buy it. I'll always use the Phantom for the times I can take it out of the van and fly without carrying it any long distance. If anyone has any answer to this, I'd much appreciate it. I'm not to bothered about the distance as I don't need to fly out of sight, I do need to fly above the mountains though to catch the amazing sun sets over the mountains in South Kerry. Again, thanks if anyone has the answer 👍 I've just read it can do up to 27 mph winds!!!!! That's impressive, I'd like to see this in real time though
You are right, the best camera is what you have with you all the time. But if i have my DSLR with me, my phone is not the best anymore.
Please test video quality against Phantom 4 and GoPro Karma. As a videographer it is definitely the most important aspect.
there you have it from dji's mouth talking about the image quality " THE RESULTS THAT WE'RE GETTING SO FAR ARE QUITE GOOD !" only quite good. i haven't seen any amazing looking sharp footage yet. take a look at casey neistats video today... thousand comments saying it looks like 420p lol
Jonas Hesselmark The phantom 3, 4, and mavic share the same sensor as Gopros newer 4K cameras they also have the same bitrate which is 60mbits per second although the mavic has better tech better battery can fly farther at almost 5 mile range and has better control over iOS shutter and image profile, sharpening contrast and saturation. So if your a video pro go with the Dji mavic also the Dji has a more narrow fov giving the image more parallax and depth and the Gopros narrow veiw just crops the image and you loose resolution. So once again go with Dji!
then why do djiadmit the image is only "quite good" and why do all the images look soft ? you would think dji would give the best examples and i find their promo soft.

The DJI rep is lying on camera... He says "It *shows up* as a 4K camera, and I would say you're really not sacrificing quality for size here." - which is not true. As Hiro mentioned, Take a look at Casey's comparison video. Results are obvious.
Yeah Neistat's footage looked crap but DigitalRev TV's stuff look quite comparable to Phantom 4. Although when they crop in you can clearly see less detail in the Mavic shot.

Classic RUclips - can't see how the Karma is even going to sell after this release. If you look at the specs, on paper, the Karma is terrible in comparison.
Sure the removable gimbal is a nice touch - but it doesn't outweigh all the features the Mavic offers.

iI think the removable camera/gimbal pack and hand stick will be a huge selling point. Also the people who aren't big fans of Apple and their "partnership."
That's how gopro work, they are like apple. Just spend a huge amount on marketing, a lot of people get that and think they have a superior product without even looking at specifications.
DJI are the ones partnered with Apple, not Go Pro.
This DJI should be out, when will there be a full review?
Honestly I want it so bad. I mean, I don't think it will be that fun to fly as I fly all sorts of RC planes and copters but it will be so easy to carry around anywhere. I don't any RC plane or drone that can do that (except the toy ones)
