- PART 2 looking at "tripod mode" is here: • DJI Mavic Pro Review P...
A first flight/ impressions review of the DJI Mavic Pro and how it compares with the Phantom 4. RUclips hasn't done the Mavic any favours here with its compression. I keep getting people tell me it does have ATTI mode, well yes it does but ONLY before it looks onto GPS or indoors. You cannot manually select it. I hope they change that

There is so much i learn from every single bit of information you share in each and every video.
Especially enjoying this on a Friday evening with all my work wrapped for the week.
Every second i listen to you talk, feels justified. Every second feels time well spent.
Thank you so so much for all your valuable time and patience in sharing your experience with us.
Sanket Sonavane thanks. Very much appreciate the comment.
This is the first video I've seen that's shown the active panning up and down of the gimbal and I'm sold.
Loved the outro. Thanks for the review. I miss your old ones, but I certainly understand the work they took to produce. Wish I lived out your way, would love to lend a hand on these sorts of shoots.
Thanks so much for this Phillip - you're the only one talking about the Mavic from a filmmakers perspective, not some overhyped 'tech blogger' who has no idea what they're talking about. The grading alone show's you're a step ahead. Thanks.
As far as VLOGs go...this kills the game. Glad you're back to the review game, Phillip. Your content is fantastic.
Your the only one on youtube that talks about the missing atti mode and you are 100% correct sir! The mavic wil go in atti mode when it does not have gps but what happends when the compass goes nuts, the bird will go out of control, this could happen, many cases are reported, with manual atti like, the p4 the pilot could bypass the compass and fly manualy safety is important! I subscribed
robin plas yep. It's a big omission. It is surely easy to add in firmware. I am bugging them about already!!
Could you please tell me one thing, if you connect your phone in the holder on the mavic, does your phone gets charged like it does in the p4?
no it doesnt and your phone gets charged in your P4? Mine doesnt!
Yes, i took a pic for you, hope you see it, did you try a different cable ? drive.google.com/file/d/0B7yFPFwrEVTDZXN4ZGJGN2N6SU0/view?usp=sharing
what phone?
I don't know about the other viewers but I actually like these stripped down reviews better than the more "formal" ones. It's really fun to see you go about the day as well and experience difficulties/good things or gripes with the gear and how you overcame them. Thanks for the video! Very enjoyable and informative (:
Mister Bloom, I salute you for sharing your opinions and knowledge with such beauty and elegance! Always look forward to your postings.
Finally someone who knows his stuff and doesn't just fly with Mavic randomly around like some vloggers that got it for free too. I love your review and I am looking for upcoming Mavic footage. Subscribed!
Such a chilled out background music. Great choice Philip Bloom!
Your reviews are top notch. We are very fortunate to be able to hear the thoughts of a genius, as they happen.
I'm surprised at the number of comments related to 360p. You're all acting like this is literally the first video you've ever watched on youtube... ever. You clearly watched the video before youtube had time to process it. Why am I even explaining this?
Right? Blows my mind lol
Black White Guy In America happens every single time I upload a video!
Riot ! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
I'm also always trying to find that sweet spot in the DJI camera settings. I have the Mavic Pro on pre order and I'm really looking forward to adding it to my kit. The fact you can carry so much gear now in essentially a carry-on is incredible. Thanks for the review Mr. Bloom!
Great to see you walking about! So happy you have/are recovering!
That thumbnail is my type of aesthetic. That's why I clicked through to this channel. Great channel bro
Great example of what the two drones can do when filming cinematic shots. I wasn't sure which to get but now after watching various videos including this one I'm going to go for the Mavic pro, simply because of its size. I was very impressed with the picture quality and really like the look of tripod mode for shooting some really smooth shots
Flying back to reveal stuff is much more interesting...great tip thanks
Great work as usual. The end with the ticking clock as well as the charging, great!
Atlast, a british reviewer. Thumbs up from the UK 🇬🇧
Best review I've seen so far on the Mavic! Nicely done! I look forward to more as I wait for mine.
Love watching your Videos Mr. Bloom. You've inspired me and countless others. So looking forward to getting my Mavic. Would totally love to follow you around with a camera next time.
I think I am your greatest fan in my country, Nepal. I admire your work.
Fantastic video Philip! Every Bloom Vlog gets better!
The review is just honest. I like it. Been watching a lot of reviews before I buy my first drone. Subscribed!
Thank you, I really enjoyed your thoughts on this. I'm interested in the Mavic Pro because of its size and portability. I think it is exactly what the market needed. That being said, I'm going to wait a bit and see what next year brings. I'm in the middle of swapping from Canon EOS to Olympus M4/3 to lighten my gear load. If the Mavic holds up, I'll seriously consider it for adding aerial shots to my hiking and paddling adventures.
great video.. I like your stuff about the actual setting and getting a good shot and how it changes flying backwards!!!
Thanks Phil.
I`m deciding between the Karma and Mavic, the Mavic has a lot more tech most of which I don't need. The Karma is a complete package with the removable gimbal setup etc.
I`ll wait and see what comes out in the wash before deciding.
yea definately a difficult choice, if you only have 1000$ i think karma is more value for money, but as far as drones go Mavic is the clear winner.
Phil G I personally would buy the Karma because I hate fisheye
really? i didnt know that. Will take a look.
Very interesting to see the mavic and your personal view on its usefulness. Also i think you have given me thr answer as to issues i had with the grass/tree filming re compression, ill stick with 2. 7 k now . Thanks a.t.b. Vee
Thanks for the review. Looking forward to seeing more from the Mavic Pro on your channel.
Fantastic as always. I look forward to many more examples of how you put this to use, and would love to see how you would compare it with the Gopro Karma at some point. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, appreciate you putting this together for us. I'm eagerly awaiting my combo package too. I think they'll be shipping in a couple weeks.
Would love to hear your thoughts again on the Mavic Philip. I am sure you will have some useful advanced tips now.
Yes, this craft is definitely being added into my drone arsenal. Very happy with the phantom 4. Has opened a whole new world of cinematic storytelling for me. Thank you DJI.
Great review! I've still never flown a drone myself, always had a pilot >_< The Mavic seams like something I could handle though
plz buy and use
Cine community is so small :) You on Simon's channel and vice versa and now here on my role model's channel :D I also want to get a mavic and start flying. Aerial shots can add so much value to short films if you know what you are doing.
all the lower end dji drones are easy to fly with all their features really. learn on a drone without gps mode to become good!
What camera did you use to shoot your this vlog and what software did you edit with? I love the cinematic look of it.
So I am assuming your using a lut for this entire video? I am super impressed by your production quality. How are you exporting your final file? MBPS? what video codec do you recommend? really trying to get the best quality out.
Great review. I am looking forward to any follow up you may create. Thank you for taking the time to run this.
I feel like I owe you a seminar fee for this vlog. A truly fantastic review and even a cinematography lesson :)
I've held off buying a drone since they came to the mass market as I just didn't feel it would work for the stuff I do in terms of form factor and ease of use. however the mavic has changed my thinking and I can't wait to own one.
By far the best review on RUclips of the Mavic. Really enjoyed it. :THUMBS UP:
Nice video, looking forward to more of your videos. Great cinematography all around .
Thanks for the elaborate first impression! Great to hear about your experience with the different settings. This is going to save me loads of time testing and figuring out how to get the best image. :)
superb review Philip - you have an excellent conversational style! Keep up the good work
To be honest I'm not a big fan of drones. People seem to slap in drone shots here and there just because they're drone shots...Mister Bloom on the other hand really knows what he's doing, as always. And the end result is gorgeous, even if it's just a test flight.
i like the colour profiles you use, theres a bit of a matted look you have to your shots. beautiful. in the car talking about batteries is an example.
thank you
Great review Mr Bloom! Always glad to see one of your videos in my subscriptionbox.
Just in case you ever run into the problem of wanting to create a YT-video without any idea what it could be about: Do a review of that Compagnon-bag! Even the shortest video will do. I want to get away from using backpacks but need something that will hold some gear without losing its shape or breaking my back. Also i dont want to look like a photographer (hope you what i mean). Therefore i would love to get your opinion on that topic since you suffer from having a bad back as well.
Anyways, really appreciate the fact that you make time to create videos for us to enjoy for free! Cheers
Let me know if you are ever in the Shenandoah valley in Virginia and I will follow you around the whole day filming for you!
Excellent information sir, thank you for sharing! from what I have seen in the majority of the reviews is that (depending on you're camera / video settings) like you said before, it's a fine line between great and not so great picture quality... practice....learn....practice..... try something else , maybe I'm wrong but the picture quality does not seem so great. I do like the way you promote the very small size of the unit, and the tight, close proximity that the MAVIC can be flown in.
glad to have you in my head....I'm watching the boxer....absolutely amazing man. You are incredibly talented.
You've always been a great inspiration for us, Philip. Thank you for that dope content!!
Well paced review, very few of these individual reviews available at this time. theres one thing I cant get an answer to though. can the roll axis be disabled to allow the camera to bank with the quad but still stabilize the tilt axis. would give a greater feeling of flight for certain applications.
in gimbal settings go to gimbal mode and set to FPV. Same on the other DJI drones.
Philip Bloom Thanks good to know, something I prefer about the Mavick over the Karma that no one has ever mentioned is the Mavick controllers sticks are raised so it can be flown by pinching the sticks. the Karma sticks are recessed so the screen can close over them so it has to be flown with thumbs, might be an issue for rc folks who only pinch.
You're incredibly talented.. love your footage.
can you please post what settings you are using?
Hey Philip! Good to see your back is much better now. :) Thanks for the review! I'll be looking forward to you in depth thoughts when you get your own to fly :)
this is the first time i have ever watched you but you are so amazing and you have some great shots keep going
Great review as always, Philip. One wonders if DJI has a plan... The 3-battery Phantom 4 kit with case and hub charger can now be gotten for $1250 US from reputable (i.e. well-rated) sellers on eBay. Even at $1299, if size isn't a big deal, this is a great price of entry into the professional level. (I have to admit to being tempted with rumors of shipping delays for both the Mavic Pro AND GoPro's Karma...)
Mavic started shipping today...the size of this is a huge huge plus
Phil, reflecting on this video from last year would you rather roll with it or the Spark while traveling for fun?
I have the Mavic and have been so torn on leaving it at home next month while on vacation and picking up a Sparking to bring to Europe. Clips I'll be taking are either personal of BRoll in nature
Do you have free or sell tutorials for color correction/grading ? Thanks / great info and video
ivan riobla
Your thoughts on Shutter speeds, is the lens as easy to mount as the p4?
Great video mate. Not seen your stuff before. I have similar toys. A7r2 batis 85mm. been using a phantom 4 for a while and carrying it around isalnd hoping and flights everywhere. certainly be nice to get the mavic over the phantom 4 purely based on size and weight. I do a lot of drones shots flying forwards knowing i'm going to reverse them in post. it's safer that way with the sensors.
His films always look so cinematic.
Yep certainly inspiring. I'm just getting into grading with the A7r2 and premeire and it really make you think before even filming what the end result could be.
Thanks for your great review! I am looking forward to seeing your next video with 'good' lighting.
Good review!. I saw one of other videos showed ATII mode on the remote. maybe it can be turn on somewhere.
Nice job Mr. Bloom. You've come a very long way as an aerial shooter. Looking forward to seeing the results when you are battery blessed. ;)
Interesting review as always Philip. The auto-focus is a bit off putting at times, like when you were showing the settings on your phone and the screen was blurring in and out.
Sorry about that but you will have to be a little accommodating here, self shot, cannot see rear screen and my arm was throwing it off. It is what it is. As I say please understand I am not offering perfection here. That is why I call them vlogs as they are scrappier and less polished that my classic reviews which took months.
Yes I understand, I know how difficult & time consuming it is to always manually focus yourself. Just my two cents for just the shot where text was involved. I'm of course always looking forward to your next vlog-review. Cheers.
ok...just explaining that you need to be more forgiving for things which aren't as perfect as i would like them in these
of course
you guys do realize the mavic has manual focus.
How did going backwards make that road shot so much better. Love this review, thanks!
Really love my Phantom 2 but really like how compact that little Mavic is. Great for shoving in a rucksack especially when hiking or in the mountains. Liked the shots along the path and your right as you say in your video - because it's so small it's easier to do shots like that. Uuuuuum that is very nice...... :-)
epic review and commentary! Yeah I really hope Atti mode is added. That is a must for smooth shots.
I have to become subscriber of your channel ,we need people like you in this network of You tube ,and the end was astonishing,Thanks Philip !!
thank you. the end? the very end?
the message behind charging the battery ,pretty cool
Hello from Greece.
Olympos - Pieria - Vrontou.
Thanks for very nice video!! You are the best!!!
I spoke to DJI at PPE & they noted that the portrait mode is meant more for shooting stills than video. They said it's ideal for those who want a high resolution panorama, where you take multiple vertical images & stitch in post. They say the drone is capable of staying still enough for panoramic images, which blows my mind. Hope this helps
didnt my annotation come up on screen during that?
Philip Bloom oh, okay. I'm watching on mobile so no annotation popped up for me
portrait mode if I'm not mistaken is for a panorama feature the drone has... i think I read that somewhere
Nice video and looking forward to get a Mavic now :) Thanks for sharing and Greetings from WW2HistoryHuntet
Really like your style, both in the video (quality and production) and personally!
Wow you got it to look so much sharper on the 2nd battery charge. The difference is very noticeable. Before then, it looked so soft, almost like it had a software anti-aliasing/noise reduction.
Croo ookie yeah the picture profile settings are so delicate. Made a huge difference putting it from -2 to -1
Philip Bloom Definitely did! Valuable info in this video, thank you!!
Great vlog - I'm sure ATTI mode is not missing as I have seen a few videos where ATTI is enabled on screen.
Paul venning-pridham it is missing. You only see it on the screen when you power up and don't have gps. It also goes into atti indoors. You cannot choose to fly in atti mode. That is the point I am making.
Thanks for clarifying that. I can't wait for my Mavic, especially for the tripod mode. Keep up with your great vlogs, your one of the reasons I purchased the Sony A7Rii. Im always available if you wanted help filming/editing your Vlogs - Paul from Hampton Court -
Great stuff Philip - thank you for reviewing the drone with a more technical eye than I've seen elsewhere. Looking at the footage close to the ground, there's a ton of compression artifacts around the leaves and the grass. Am I right in thinking that's RUclips's transcoding, rather than the raw footage? Thanks.
Your color grading looks really awesome. Do you mind sharing some of your settings!? I really like that grading for the upcoming autumn. Great VLOG and video! Greetings
wow at 0.57 This looks like Mount Yasur Volcano in Tanna Island Vanuatu over looking the sulphur Bay right??
Wow' thanks for a great and informative review!
I will be using you as my tutor when my Mavic arrives.
Keep up the good work thanks
David
Glad you posted this! Love watching your stuff with you in it. Funny guy!
I love all of your VIDEO Mister Bloom! great Job Sir!
thanks for reviewing this, i have already pre-ordered a mavic pro, i still have a phantom 4 but i just couldn't decide whether to get rid of the phantom 4 or keep the phantom 4, love the phantom 4 but with the mavic pro being so small and convinient, it's a no brainer, just need to really confirm that the mavic pro, have at least 80% plus of what a phantom 4 can film. I've also heard that the drone can do an auto rotation around a moving object and tracking a person as you walking uphill, i.e. yourself or a person, and for me that's a game changer, can you make a video about that? Thanks
Can you do a color grading tutorial with camera settings? great job 👍😃
Hi Philip, I'm a bit ashamed that I didn't discover your RUclips Channel earlier. I admire your work and am fascinated how "normal" you seem, in spite of being so "famous". - If you come to Dresden or Saxony and need an assistant I'd be happy to volunteer. I learned photography with the nature photographer Dietmar Nill, and I think one always learns a lot when working with a pro. Thanks for sharing your experiences and your knowledge on RUclips!
I like your approach! Looking forward to seeing more reviews.
Wow Philip, when you got those drones up far enough away from the details in the shot to have them move slowly enough for the codec to handle, the shots got quite fantastic. Pretty crap when the details are moving too fast in the frame though, wouldn't you agree?
To me it seems like this rough comparison shows the Mavic to be essentially the same image quality as the Phantom 4.
Hammerhaus Kennel v
I think it's the opposite.
When small details are going slow, the codec will struggle to tell the diference between two frames and will apply temporal compression.
But I might be wrong
Nicolas Gaillard Interesting. I'll give that some thought.
Philip loved the review. and your editing skills. thank you for taking the time to make this . was very useful. also new subscriber to your channel . would love to have your support as well. keep up the great work my friend.
waiting for your next review to make my mind on the P4 or mavic, you are saving me the hassle of testing, thanks!!!
love the battery ending part! well done
glad you like that bit! my favourite part!
Before I finish this video I just want to pause it and say I would have no problem being apart of your blogs and "follow you around" as a dp
Great Job sir Bloom! I can feel the work you've done here :)
Thanks for the review Philip, very helpful. Do you remember the FPS you had set on these flights? Iam assuming ND filters will help in getting the shutter speed down but guessing none are yet available for it yet. This is bound to help the finished output somewhat.
What a beautiful review! Love your content :)
Great Job as always Mr. Bloom, I see your cats didn't make the vlog though. ;)
I have always enjoyed watching your review vlogs!
Really a great video, I just wonder what color correction you use?
its in the video near the end on the screen.
Philip Bloom Okey, great
would love to see your workflow from one of these videos (perhaps a shorter one) showing the ingest, the edit and how you work. Maybe an idea for a livestream??
my workflow is chaotic. not one to recommend!
Great video, really interesting to see your thoughts on profiles & general setup. Cheers!
I think one of the biggest advantages of the Mavic compared to the Phantom 4 is that you don't see the rotors in your footage anymore. Sure the reason is the slightly lower FOV, but this doesn't bother me at all. Anyway, thanks for making theese great Videos Mr. Bloom!
Great work Philip ! I'm thinking of picking up a Mavic. I've heard that the ART profile is no longer there with the new software and would appreciate your opinion on the best alternative to achieve a similar look. Thanks kindly.
Boy I don't know, should I be second guessing wanting to buy the Mavic Pro now? Never owned a drone, was waiting for one that was more portable because we all know how much gear we already have to carry and this would fit perfect. Curious to see your next video on it once more tests can be ran.
