Actually 10 (with 22 nominations), but who's counting.
But it's her impact on music, and other artist; producers; writers, and musicians the past 50 years that's so profound. However, not every "pop" type fan understands the enormous impact of Chaka's music, cause they're just looking at record sales (or clear pop hits) and not legacy/impact. So in there, she can simultaneously be "underrated".

Jay, Amber, have you noticed how many times these performers have surprised you with their artistic range? Not just vocal range, from low to high, but the song choices from pop/dance, 'rock & roll', to ballads, love songs, torch songs, etc. Artists and bands, the great ones, the ones that lasted, made a point of showing that they couldn't be placed in a pigeonhole. Versatility was a badge of honour. Much of commercial music nowadays is about The Formula, and if the singer messes up, don't worry, we'll fix it in post. (post-production, digital sound tools, like Auto-tune, or Pro Tools)

When I think powerful female vocalists Whitney Houston of course comes to mind. But before her there was Chaka Khan, and Patti LaBelle. Chaka’s Ain’t Nobody video moves me, not just the song but she looks particularly hot to me and she’s singing right at the camera. 🥰
Patti has a freakishly powerful voice, she literally doesn’t need a mic, plus a range and control few can match.
If those high notes do it for you then listen to Minnie Riperton, Loving You. It will give you chills when she hits her whistle tone high notes. Mariah Carey is one of the few who can do that now.
Chaka Khan: Tell Me Something Good, Ain’t Nobody,
Patti LaBelle: Lady Marmalade, Stir It Up, New Attitude

Chaka always kills it, started loving her with "Tell Me Something Good" when she was with the band Rufus. If you really want to see a great live performance of her with 2 other great female singers, check out "Ain't Nobody's Business" with Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight and Etta James. It was a BB King special. Chaka Khan is pretty inebriated and Etta seems to be holding her up at times, but Chaka stills blows the roof off, when her part comes and, both, Etta and Gladys look a little surprised at how l great she does it. Etta James amazing. Gladys Knight always delivers.

And her powerful voice has been her signature since the early 70’s with Rufus, she was was a pint size firecracker , and still performing and making records to this day. Fun fact , the great songwriter David Foster wrote this song with Chaka in mind , because she had so many great funk songs and he wanted her to sing a love ballad to show off her powerful beautiful vocals. The radio single and the song I was playing was titled "Whoever's Thrilling You is Killing Me." It was a bluesy R&B song with the female singing lead. My mother came out of the kitchen into the living room and said, "Who's singing that song?" I said, "A new group named Rufus." My mother said, "That girl can sing." @@randyrodriguez1445 Not at all denigrating any other era. It is true that technology has become a crutch that stifles creativity. Some artists have the means and the freedom to not work that way, but many producers will take the humanity right out of your performance. What I’m talking about it is two different approaches to recording music. Music today can be and sometimes is as impactful as music then, but not when the approach to music production is lazy or when technology is allowed to fix poor performances rather than taking the time/spending the money to get the take right. We see similar issues with movies today. I love films and music made today but less frequently for all these reasons.

Plus, she's a genuinely nice person and she has a smile that warms my soul. On a side note...this song was written and produced by the "hitmaker" David Foster and he has said that when he was writing the melody, he had Chaka in mind as the only one to sing the song and the working title was "Chaka". He has also produced, written and played keyboards on a multitude of hit songs for various artists such as Earth, Wind and Fire, Kenny Loggins, The Tubes, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Chicago and Whitney Houston, including her mega-hit I Have Nothing (although, his collaboration with Chicago on 3 albums in the 80's was controversial because he totally changed their sound into a more pop-oriented style with way less horns).

This song is fire!! 🔥🤩 Kanye sampled it and his version is really good too. If you ever get the chance to see her live jump on it! The pure energy she puts into her music is contagious.

Kanye's (sample) is not even in the same universe. It's like comparing little league baseball to the majors.

Kanye can get lost- should not have touched this masterpiece. I hope David Foster made him pay huge royalties

Kanye sampling this song and flipping it to Through the Wire because of his injury was genius.
