Her first hit, with Rufus -- Tell Me Something Good -- triggered a huge crush. Any guy going through puberty at the time felt it. The song was written for her by Stevie Wonder, and she didn't let him down. It's magnificent.
There's great video of her performing it with Stevie on Keyboards at Divas Live and she really milks the sexiness of the song--so much so that Stevie stands up and starts bumping and grinding on her.
As a DJ, I can verify that this song went/goes crazy in the club. This was one of Chaka's best. As for who "Rufus" is, that is the name of the band she collaborated with for decades. They are all supremely talented musicians who complemented Chaka's voice perfectly.
I toss a Jackin House remix of this by Erik Hagleton in sets, and it NEVER disappoints! also a remix of The Pointer Sisters' "Automatic" by Block & Crown feat. Jay Maxwell. both are pretty true to the originals.

Back in the day there used to be a club in Detroit called the rhinoceros. It was a Piano bar on one side and a restaurant on the other with no dance floor. There was a couple that sang this song at least once a night as part of their repertoire , and every time they played it a dance floor was created. Everybody got on their feet. The waitresses hated it, but good God it was fun.
When this song came on...I had to stop and listen! BLOWN AWAY...Chaka Khan is other worldy! Her dynamics are next level...gifted vocalist and her smile is rockin'!
Both of you would have loved the ramped up vibes on the dance floor back then. Everybody found some sort of move out there on the dance floor. The only reason you would not be breaking a sweat on the dance floor is if you had your sweat glands removed. Brilliant times back then in the night clubs.
I was blown away the first time I heard this song on the radio. Rufus was her band. After Whitney Houston, there were no longer original unique voices coming up like Chaka Khan any longer. They all became cookie cutter vocal gyrations singers. Chaka was one of a kind.

Rufus is an American funk band from Chicago, Illinois, best known for launching the career of lead singer Chaka Khan. They had several hits throughout their career, including "Tell Me Something Good", "Sweet Thing", "Do You Love What You Feel" and "Ain't Nobody". Rufus and Chaka Khan were one of the most popular and influential funk bands of the 1970s, with four consecutive number one R&B albums, ten Top 40 pop hits and five number one R&B singles, among other accolades. Paulette McWilliams was the singer for Rufus. She was friends with Chaka Khan. Khan used to go to most of the shows Rufus did. When Paulette decided to leave the band, she recommended Khan and stayed around long enough to teach her the song. Their first album had a couple of songs that got some attention on R&B radio stations, but the album didn't sell very well. Their follow up album - Rags to Rufus was where it kicked off. Rags to Rufus was released in 1974 and two of its singles - the Stevie Wonder-penned "Tell Me Something Good" and the Parker-Khan composition, "You Got the Love" - became smash hits leading to Rags to Rufus going Platinum. They also landed opening spots for the tours of several top stars including Stevie Wonder, Cheech and Chong and the Hues Corporation. "Tell Me Something Good" also brought Rufus their first Grammy Award. In addition, it sold over one million copies, and was awarded a Gold disc by the RIAA on August 9, 1974. Due to Khan's increasing popularity Rufus and ABC started calling the group Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. With this new billing, the band recorded and quickly released their next album, Rufusized in 1974. Another Platinum success, the group entered the top ten again with the funk singles, "Once You Get Started", (penned by Gavin Christopher), "Stop on By", "I'm a Woman", and "Pack'd My Bags" (later sampled for Jody Watley's "Lovin' You So") and "Please Pardon Me (You Remind Me of a Friend)", penned by their friend Brenda Russell. Tell Me Something Good should be the next tune to check out. Stevie Wonder wrote it and taught the band how to play it and it's sooooo damn funky.
If you remember the old movie from 1980, The Blues Brothers, Chaka Khan has a cameo when she was a young women about Ambers age! When the Blues Brothers are in the gospel church, Chaka Khan is the young women vocalist in the choir. Love Chaka Khan!
Rufus was Chaka Khan's band in the 70s and early 80s. One of the most popular and influential funk/soul/R&B groups of the time. Numerous #1 albums and singles, top 40 hits, etc. And they had Chaka, a national treasure.

Agreed. I’d add Tina Turner to that list of immediately recognizable iconic voices. I’m glad they finally got to this song. It’s one of Chaka’s best and I love the video too. I also first heard Rufus with Chaka Khan in Tell Me Something Good. Her voice was undeniable and the vocalizations by the rest of the band blew my mind. I hadn’t ever heard anything like it before. This is the all-time , timeless classic , from the voice, the, the legend, the Phenomenal Chaka Khan. Rufus is the name of band she fronted before embarking on her solo career, her biggest hit with them “ Tell me Something Good”… everything about her just evokes “ Woman”…
One of my favorite songs that Chaka sings, it's still a groove decades later. There were some classic songs from Rufus & Chaka Khan: Tell Me Something Good, Sweet Thing, Do You Love What You Feel, What Cha' Gonna Do For Me, Once You Get Started, and Hollywood.
I like "Sweet Thing", "Once You Get Started" and "Hollywood" too. I also like "Dancin' For Your Love", "Heaven Bound", "Stay", "Everlasting Love" and "Pack'd My Bags".
There are so many Chaka Khan memories! In each of her songs, she evokes goose bump or orgasmic moments that require multiple listens. Her music is like a drug. Whether it's her phrasing, her vocal timbre, her harmonies or sassy syncopated vocal style, she has the 'IT' factor. Also, let's not forget her look, too...her hair, lips and hips help bring her songs to life. She's definitely one of the most original, talented, creative, colorful and much loved artists of the last 50 years!
I love how you both articulated her passion within the power of her gifted voice. 👌🏾 ❤️💯 Chaka Khan, Chicago's own, one of the best to ever pick up a mic and share her God gift.

If not mentioned already, Chaka Khan was a member of the band Rufus. Getting the whole package here! Thanks! My fav is still her appearance on Stevie Winwood's Higher Love, which you may have reacted to already.
Yep, they reacted to Higher Love already and had no idea who Chaka Khan was! I have to keep reminding myself, these are young people actually trying to go back and learn, hear music we grow up with, so I forgive them for what they do not know! Lol, it still strings though. Ouch!
One of the only songs that actually gives me goosebumps when it starts. The bassline, the groove, and her voice. Then the guitar that rides on top!!! Gets to me at my core. Wow!!! One my favorite songs of all time!!! I can tell you guys are feeling it too. An eternal classic and one of America's best.
It hit the airways in 1983 I was a Junior in High School It was a Definitely a Big hit in the Clubs.." and even now you can hear it being played in some dance clubs. It is timeless.." She undoubtedly is an Incredibly talented Vocalist" It was a pleasure to witness you all hearing it for the first time "
Gotta love Chaka!! She's such a vibe!! 80s Aretha Franklin songs Freeway of Love, Who's Zoomin' Who, and her duet with George Michael "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" are a must listen!! ✨💖✨keep smiling! 🥰
Someone already mentioned "Tell Me Something Good" which is funky and great but another slower song which I love is "Sweet Thing". Can't go wrong with either.
What Cha' Gonna Do for Me, I Know You, I Live You, and Do You Love What You Feel (Rufus and Chaka Khan) are also classics from Chaka Khan you should check out
I was in the clubs when Chaka Kahn was filling the airwaves, and let me tell you, when those first few notes of Ain't Nobody came out of the speakers, the dance floor filled up! You're right that what makes this work is that combination of power and passion, but also that steady relentless backbeat and the smooth groove, punctuated by her amazing energy. This is a song to play at a wedding reception, when you're ready for your guests to let loose. 40 years later, it still kicks.
This cut is a CLASSIC!

Feeling this the way! Your´re the best to understand this old stuff. Soft and floating.
If not mentioned already, Chaka Khan was a member of the band Rufus. Getting the whole package here! Thanks! My fav is still her appearance on Stevie Winwood's Higher Love, which you may have reacted to already.
I don't think they have. Great suggestion! 👍😃❣️
Great song!
Love Stevie Winwood!
This song takes me back to my Breakdancing days in 1984. Great era
It hit the airways in 1983 I was a Junior in High School It was a Definitely a Big hit in the Clubs.." and even now you can hear it being played in some dance clubs. It is timeless.." She undoubtedly is an Incredibly talented Vocalist" It was a pleasure to witness you all hearing it for the first time "
Amber, if you do Chaka on a Female Friday you have to do "I'm Every Woman" it's only appropriate! 😉
The best music ever made love love love this track ❤
Gotta love Chaka!! She's such a vibe!! 80s Aretha Franklin songs Freeway of Love, Who's Zoomin' Who, and her duet with George Michael "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" are a must listen!! ✨💖✨keep smiling! 🥰
seeing you guys slowly falling in love with the song ist so moving :D
Someone already mentioned "Tell Me Something Good" which is funky and great but another slower song which I love is "Sweet Thing". Can't go wrong with either.
How awesome is THAT song, woohoo!! The BEST dance song!!! This is in my pantheon of best songs ever 😊
I found myself singing every word of this song and watching two of you moving with her flow! : )
What Cha' Gonna Do for Me, I Know You, I Live You, and Do You Love What You Feel (Rufus and Chaka Khan) are also classics from Chaka Khan you should check out
The best song!!
This song was absolutely killer in the clubs! Everyone got up & danced!
It is literally one of the greatest performances I have haver EVER heard!
IT WAS BIG IN THE CLUBS!
Yes
Always turn this up when it comes on! Always!
Love this song. Chaka is still killing this song Live in Concerts today.
"Tell Me Something Good". It's from when she was with the band Rufus (like this song).
Have you heard her cover of Prince's "I Feel For You"?
One of the best songs ever written
