Simply one of the best songs ever, regardless of genre.
Amber - you must add Nenah Cherry " Buffalo Stance" to your female Friday list. She was a British pop singer and is such a fun song
Neneh Cherry is Swedish not British.
With respect, Nenah came from Stockholm
She did so much for British music ... Massive attack anyone ... But not British
Adding my vote for Neneh and “Buffalo Stance”. Killer track, still ahead of its time. I still play it on the regular.
And related to the great jazz Maverick Don Cherry.
The lead singer’s name is Caron Wheeler, she’s very underrated , she should have been a big star, the whole Soul To Soul band is very underrated .
She was a librarian.
Isn't she also Mum to Alexandra Burke?
There were 5 lead singers in Soul II Soul: Carol Wheeler was the first, the others on their original hits are Doreen Waddell, Marcia Lewis, Victoria Wilson-James, and Rose Windross. Listen to their other hits…
Her vocals are amazing

British soul was a big thing in the 80s and 90s, sooo many good songs
Loose Ends - Hanging on a string
Imagination - just an illusion
Junior - Mama used to say
Princess - say I'm your number one
Haywoode - roses
Mai Tai - History
There were so many great artists!
You read my mind. I was going to post these. Respect.
I had no idea Junior was not American. Good call out. He is basically the leader of the British soul invasion.
Deep cut there with Haywoode!
They could do a whole series on white British r&b/soul acts from the 80s/90s:
The Style Council/Paul Weller
Sade
George Michael
Boy George
The System
Simply Red
Loose Ends
Jamiroquai
And the list goes on. Something in the water over there.
And a great cross-over with the much maligned jazz / funk movement that brought us Jamirouqai, Galliano, Young Disciples...
Wow .. I just jumped back 40 years then :) lol did my memory good 👍 :) lol
This is one of my favorite 80s songs. We tore this up on the dance floor and it was just fun to sing to as well.
Right On 😊. Alexandra Burke Mother was in The Group and she became a successful pop star too. Check out Loose Ends, and Joyce Sims.
Yes! I was on the dance floor more in the late 90s 😉but this song was STILL mixed constantly. 🔥 ❤️✌️
Yes! Brings back great memories of dancing at the clubs ❤
That one came at the VERY end of the 80s (in May 1989) and in fact foreshadowed the 90s 😉
@@ingvarjensen1088 Very true!
Cannot OVERESTIMATE How Much This Song PACKED the Dance Floor!
It was pure magic
They captured lightning in a bottle with this video. Perfection.
Warehouses and farmers fields included can remember Grooverider dropping this at Biology somewhere near Watford
FACTS..if the DJ lost the room...Caron would grab it by the neck with the opening
The backstory to this makes this even more powerful. Tribute to God. She was about to die and prayed to God and she lived, hence “Back to Life, Back to Reality” “however do you want me, however do you need me”, she was talking to God as she was being grateful and thanking him and telling him that she is his to use however he needs to.
How can a song instantly transport you back to being a 15 year old? So crazy. Great reaction.
I am right there with you! We were so young, and so very, very pretty, but we didn't know it!
Although I was 6 when it came out, I definitely got thrown back in time. We called it the “Brooklyn Anthem” when it came out.
Or even 21 for that matter. 🙂
"Back to Life" and "Keep on Movin'" are staples of my playlist and always have been. Another cool British band to check out is The Brand New Heavies. "Never Stop" is a great track. Lisa Stansfield is also British.
Don't you dare forget about another British R&B Group "Loose Ends"! As they also had a string of hits like "Hangin' on a String", "Stay a Little While Child", "Slow Down" & "Nights of Pleasure" to name just a few during the 80's! Peace!!!
Agree on Brand New Heavies. Brother Sister is one of the best albums from the 90s
@@ericstaton6896 Thank you for the reminder!
@@philiposm It's a great album.
@@kellyreiterman You are so very much welcome! Be well!!!
Can't believe this song was 34 years ago, it was played non stop through the summer of 1989 in the UK, a bona fide classic, it still sounds as great today.
yes, and it was the last thing that the 80's left us to enjoy for the rest of our lives ... MY 30-year-old son enjoys this song every time he listens to it ... that's the legacy that one left us of the best decades
My graduation year! Came up to college that year & every club had this cranked up. 🎉😊 Super fun!
@@jennhurl mine too!
I was 13 and in high school. The only track I played on repeat that neither parent complained about 😊
@@jennhurl I was just about to say that. High school graduation.
Their other big hit “Keep On Movin” is amazing. One of the best sad grooves ever
BIG TUNE

HELL YES.
This came out in '89, but I remember it still getting serious radio play in '91. This is such a vibe.
Immediately ran out and bought the cassette after only hearing this song. Incredible musicians and singers. Keep On Movin is another popular song by them.
Same!
Haha same
We're clearly the same age group :D
YESN ME TOO! These guys were so perfect for their time
All of the above! Absolutely!🔥
HOLY CRAP!!!! This brings back SOOOOOOO many great memories from back in the day. All my night clubbing times was revolved around songs and house music like this. I've STILL got this song on a CASSETTE TAPE in a box in my closet ... 10 steps away from where I am right now. Timeless song.
Cassette tape...how in the hell did u hold onto that!!
@@michaelasay8587 Lol. Yeah, I know. I've got about a hundred or so cassette tapes left from back in the day ... used to have more. Haven't got the heart to get rid of them.
@@geoffkeil3135 I am with you... especially the ones made by friends specially for me, with hand written tracklistings and a cover they cut from a magazine!
@@kf9346 Lol. Yup .... got a few of those too.
Major club hit. I loved when the DJ extended this song. I had a special little dance just for this song. Also always sung this packing to go home from a vacation just the back to life 😢
Jazzy B is a musical legend and a giant of a human being. Grew up with soul 2 soul in my late teens, this is a timeless classic. A perfect track.
He was a good DJ too, I've seen him a couple of times on nights out back in the 90's. The last time was at Flaming Collosus, a club that's long since gone and was only a couple of miles from where I live now.
This song was such an excellent transition out of the glam/glitter 80's and into the colorful stylish New Jack 90's.
Wow; well said.
As a metal head in the 80's through now, I've always listened to all genres. As a musician of 37yrs, I found that you can find inspiration in anything. This song was everywhere when it was released, couldn't escape it. This song forced me to dig deeper into the British R&B scene and let me tell you, some gems were found. (i.e. Five Star, Junior, Mica Paris, Loose Ends, David Grant and of course, the well knowns Lisa Stansfield, Rick Astley, Neneh Cherry , Simply Red, Billy Ocean). Amazing time in British R&B.
I always loved exploring juke boxes in other countries. No idea if the exist any longer, though.
And don't forget Massive Attack ruclips.net/video/u7K72X4eo_s/видео.html
Junior's Mama used to say is a great blast the dancefloor song
Everywhere? Couldn't escape it? I'm an overall metalhead-first who also 'listens to it "all" (Slayer to Prince to KISS to James Taylor to Motown). Also lived through the 80s. And I have never heard this song IN MY LIFE. I've definitely heard of the band, hopefully this isn't their big hit / best.
They really should do 5Star, there are quite a few hit songs all beautifully produced and awesome sounding for second half of the 80’s
This was a huge hit back in 89 starting with their first single “Keep On Movin”. The lead singer is Caron Wheeler and the dude with the Locs and keytar is Jazzie B who’s formed the group in London.
BIGGER than huge! 😁
Love 'Keep On Movin''
That song defined the summer of 89. London VIBES!
43 yd old white boy here....I've been bumpin' this track since it released! Back then we all listened to everything from everywhere from every walk of life. Yall got soooo much more to experience and im here for it !
Sade is a British band. A lot of people think Sade is a solo singer, but they're actually a 4 member band named after the lead singer. Some other R&B groups/singers are 5 Star, Loose Ends, Swing Out Sister, Brand New Heavies (lead singer N'Dea is from the USA), Joss Stone, Craig David, Jamiroquai, Floetry, Average White Band (Scottish), Incognito, Lisa Stansfield, Des'ree, Level 42, The Pasadenas, Hiatus Kaiyote (Australian), Junior, Wham!/George Michael (Wham! even has some rap tracks like "Wham Rap!" & "Young Guns".
This is the best list I have seen in the comments!!
Killer song! We need a dance floor. 😂The 80’s had the best dance music! OMG!!
I absolutely love this!
I could give you a list a mile long!!
34 years old hit almost to the day and it still sounds and feels so fresh✌️❤
This was also a founding track for British House music. Sampled all over the place and multiple remixes. It was influencial in many ways.
Once upon a time this song was played everywhere. Beaches, shopping centres, night clubs - everywhere!
Caron Wheeler is doing the lead vocals- what a goddess!!!! This was a dance floor staple back in 89!!!
UK soul R&B disco sound was so huge during the 90's richer than the US prod
This was the Jam back in 89. Following Keep on moving.
This Soul II Soul beat was imitated by so many bands and artists on both sides of the pond after this.
Soul II Soul used different lead singers for their tracks which bought a new vibe to each.
Many of the comments on here have fantastic tunes you should try to check out.
If you can check out some more Soul II Soul jams I'm sure you will love them.
Fairplay, Keep on moving, A dreams a dream, Move me no mountain to name a few. 👍
OMG the dance floor would go nuts with the first words from this song! Every Body was on da floor before she even finished the first "Back to life" sentence w this banger to close out the 80s!!
Caron Wheeler is the lead singer on this song, as well at the group's other big hit, Keep on movin'. She's got at least one solo album as well. Dating myself, but this took me RIGHT back to high school, 10th grade when it came out. Definitely stands the test of time!
I was like "How do you not know this song?", so I had to look it up. It's from 1989. Wow, it seems like only 10 years, but it's actually more than 30!
They were huge, they even had their own clothing lines Jazzie B a legend and Caron Wheeler great stuff, they talked the talk and walked the walk.
A BANGER! Next, try Be Fair, also from Soul II Soul. The whole album is a must listen imho. Caron, the lead singer, wrote Back to Life after almost dying in childbirth, so this is a song of celebration and perseverance. Soul II Soul basically spawned a cultural movement in Britain, their influence went beyond the music. So glad you've found them!
Had a big crush on Caron Wheeler.
Can't BELIEVE you've never heard this. Through a good sound system, turned up nice and loud, this KICKS.
This song is as old today as a song from 1955 was back when it came out in 1989.. it might be fresh in our memory, but not everyone among the younger generations would have heard this oldies song in recent decades.. as good as it still is. 😂
@@MK-fc2hn I was born 1981 and it's scary how fast the years just fly by as you get older. 1990 to 2000 seemed like it took forever to get through, but 2000 to 2023 just flew by. 2000 Feels like it was just 10 years ago. I wish time would just slow down for us older folks 😭
@@helicoptersrkool I agree. I was born in 1975 and every year from about 1982 till 2000 has its own distinct place in my memory.. where I can recall and place my memories according to each year. I know exactly which year songs and movies came out, I can correctly guess when fashion trends were popular, and I can even correctly guess the model years of the cars from that era. But after the 2000s came, everything just flew by and I can't do any of that anymore.. I often wonder how did it go by so fast, and why is that any random year, let's say 2006 for example, is so indistinguishable in my memory compared to the years in the 80's and 90s. I couldn't name a song from 2006 if my life depended on it! 😆
@@MK-fc2hnwrong! This song has been sampled so many times…Suzanne Vega sampled it.

British rnb band formed in the 80s they rocked our dance floors in the uk. Proud to be British.. this was a banger no.1 in the chart 1989 for 8 weeks for a debut fresh new group and their first debut single this rocked ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Taz from uk
Over 3 decades later and it's still the JAM!
British R & B is a strong part of the music scene since the Sixties. ✌️
Yep, eventually they will get to Loose Ends. “Hanging on a String”is a masterpiece.
@@jmac3977 YES!
Such a great song. I’ll never get tired of it.
I remember dancing to this in the clubs when it came out! 😮 Makes me feel old 😂😂
The first time I heard this song, I was sitting in a hospital room with my ex-wife. She had just had a hysterectomy to fix her severe case of endometriosis. She was out cold from sedatives and I was bored, flipping through tv channels looking for something to watch. I settled on MTV (back when they still showed music videos). This song came on and I immediately fell in love!!!
The voice of Caron Wheeler and the vibe of Jazzy B, The way things should be, the way things should go, Soul 2 Soul
Soul II Soul was so good! This song was a staple in the clubs in the 90's. This song reminds me of another R&B group of the time, PM Dawn. Y'all should check out "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" if you're not familiar with it already. They sample a song you guys have reacted to. It'd be fun to see if you can recall it. :)
Guys you shouldn't miss M People for sure, with the wonderful Heather Small magnificent voice as lead singer. The best of the British R&B of the 90th scene, any song of them is a gem and an unforgettable vibe of the time. I would start with "Don't look any further" then "Heather Small - Proud", "Just For You", "one night in heaven", "moving on up", " A sight for sore eyes", "Renaissance", "Itchycoo Park", "Search for the hero" so many big hits. You cannot, not know them.
ABSOLUTELY
“Wow,Very Good Info About Soul To Soul's Origins.” I Never Knew That They Were British. Great Great Great Reaction Y’all👍🏾💯👍🏾
If y'all liked this, you'll love Loose Ends. They were making hits across both ponds for a few years before Soul II Soul.
Hanging on a string is one of the great songs of the 80s.
@@imposs-up1hg Facts.
In England in the late 80s we had a culture called Acid house which mainly resided in underground clubs warehouses. By the summer of 89 we had moved into big raves in farmer fields and this echoed through the fields as the sun rised . This track will always have a special place in my life . Such beautiful times
Just England? the rest of the UK participated..
Masterplan by Barrie K Sharpe was the acid jazz blueprint

They were. Beautiful.
Acid house was invented by black guys like Frankie Knuckles at the Warehouse in Chicago. Hence the name " House " music : ruclips.net/video/4f1TdEcqw_M/видео.html
Beautiful catchy British 1989 soul! Yes, violins and piano, with vocal chorus! CD from that year - nice!
This song is about Caron Wheeler’s near death experience. She did not want to come back and she is questioning The Lord about her new purpose here on earth. I absolutely love this song!
Yep she wanted to die
Wow, I didn't know that 😲 Thanks for telling that story 💝

didn't know this. Actual quality comment. thanks
This was that strange/great time from the late 80s to the early 90s when there was SO much pop that had this same vibe.
If this is the era your at now YOU NEED C&C MUSIC FACTORY!!!
This song will always be on my playlist! Y’all will definitely love Sly Fox, “Let’s Go All The Way” 😎…80’s Dance banger!
Absolutely!!
Another GREAT British rap/R&B artist is Mark Morison, who did the epic song ' Return of the Mack "
Was a teen when this song came out, it was utter coolness and class, as was the whole album. I love it, still play it from time to time and always will.
Yes, Billy Ocean was from the UK, and Soul II Soul won the 1990 Grammy for Best New Artist.
Absolute classic...actually this could be released today and be a hit !!
Gosh this takes me back! Such great vocals!
You poor, deprived youths… the eighties were nuclear musically
😂
Sooo true😅
I'm trying to figure out how they've never heard these tunes before?
exactly. we lived through those good times. Soul II Soul came out when I was in 12th grade. They are my favorite group after Earth, Wind & Fire
Atleast we have RUclips
This takes me back to happier times in the 80's, and the thing that strikes me most, regarding videos from that era, is the fact they always appear to be enjoying life, happy and natural, especially, you tend to notice a lot of times there is sunshine, but not the glaring uncomfortable kind, but that warmth of a hazy summer's day, when life was filled with endless possibilities, and then you get the slow approach to sunset, again, memories of warm summer evenings with friends, no hassles, no worries, no fears, just optimism and the joy of living - something I sadly find missing in society today. As I fast approach 59, I find myself more often looking back to those halcyon days of music-rich 80's, the club scene, the non-judgemental lifestyles and fashions, and how people just accepted things and each other for what they were. But then, that's what being young was all about.
This song is still one of my go to jams!!! I love the harmonies ❤
Such a great time of music! When there was still R &B! Loose Ends is also a great R&B group from England that had hits in late 80s early 90s. 'Slow Down' is probably their most popular hit.
No no no - Hanging on a String :) is a massive song.
I love Hanging on Strings from Loose Ends
Oh my gosh yes ... been trying to get some Loose Ends on here for a while.
@@susanschonnop9701 Me too!!
"Watching You" & "Stay A While Child" are SOOOOO good!
One of the best songs of the 90's.
This was such a JAM back in the day, for real!! We used to party hard on this track. They had another great hit titled, "Keep on Movin'". That and Back to Life was really their best songs, they weren't able to top those two hits. They had a couple of other songs that got decent airplay, but never charted like these two hits.
See a Caron Wheeler Live in Tokyo here - ruclips.net/video/gmpjxFcg-z8/видео.html
It's been how long, and that song still jams to this day.
--This group came out at the perfect time.. there was New Jack Swing all over the radio and the beat they used (from Graham Central Station's The Jam) became one of the most used drums of all-time. You will hear it many times in songs like "Tom's Diner" and "Don't Make Me Over". All of those songs ruled the dancefloor from 90-92.
This song was a HUGE game changer. Soul II Soul had R&B and pop acts running back to the studio. That's the great Caron Wheeler on lead vocals....Incredible voice. Their debut album is landmark. You gotta do more on them.
I was a university student when this came out. I remember my friends and I were blown away by this group. Nobody had ever heard anything quite like this before. This song and another song by them 'Keep on moving" were groundbreaking tunes that sparked a bunch of similar sounding songs from other artists.
This song never got old timeless masterpiece
MY JAM!!! When this came out, it overshadowed everything else musically at the time. I close my eyes and I’m back on the dance floor in a club in South Orange, NJ; everyone was in a serious groove almost trancelike ❤🔥 HAVE to do “Keep On Movin” next 🔥
I didn’t know they were British, but this was played at the club and parties so much! Makes ya want to *move* !
That song was HUGE in the late 80’s,before real hip hop went mainstream Soul ll Soul was everywhere
This and Keep On Moving are their best songs. The lead singer is Caron Wheeler. She left the group after a couple of years to go solo.
The first British R&B group to have #1 hits on the US R&B charts in the 80s and 90s is Loose Ends. "Watching You" and "Hanging On A String" are two of my favorites but they had several hits.
Soul π Soul was founded by Trevor Beresford Romeo better known as Jazzie B here in the UK, they were massive in the 80's with their Club Classics Album, the lead singer is Caron Wheeler a great singer songwriter herself, I had the pleasure of meeting Jazzie at their merchandise shop in London in the late 80's, so many great tunes for you to listen too
This is one of those songs that I could put on a loop and listen to over & over for hours
I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to totally enjoy the 80s, this was definitely the best decade for music..RnB, Soul, New Romantic and definitely the likes of Bowie and Queen, anyone not around in that decade were definitely deprived of the best music ever
Remember this from the blazing hot summer we had in the UK back in 1989. 30-odd years later, this still sounds as fresh as ever. Another that summed up that summer and worth a listen is "Ride on Time" by Black Box.
Back To Life was the jam when it came out in 1989. It still is the jam in 2023. I was in college the year this song came out. The campus was partying to this song all constantly.
The 1980s was probably the greatest decade for music. The musical diversity that we all enjoyed was incredible...This decade tops even the 1960s.. and that decade was great. But the 1980s was something else.....It really was... This is just one top song from that decade
There are three of us from the north side
And two from the east
Through our style people just came
To recognize us as the funky dreads
~ Jazzie's Groove
The UK had its share of R&B artist. I definitely think you all should react to Loose Ends. They were the joint
A favourite for sure! They’re amazing! ❤️
Soul2Soul does not get the credit that they deserve. Incredible band from across the pond!
One of my favorites. I play this when my teen and 20 something grandkids were all together. They never heard it. They loved it! Good music is timeless. ❤️
Hey y'all please do Keep on Movin also by Soul 2 Soul! These were the jams to dance to! Another song that you will want to jam to is Hey Mr DJ by Zhane!
@Rob Squad One of my favorite songs club songs a banger then, a banger now, a banger in the year 4022. Greatness has no expiration date young folks :)
Jazzie B of Soul 2 Soul was awarded an OBE. He has done loads of production and remixes for many artists including James Brown. In my opinion one of his best remixes is the track "I'm Not The Man I Used To Be", by "Fine Young Cannibals", which he did with Nellee Hooper.
Favourite band of the 90’s. Saw them live in ‘92. There was about 20 of them. Singers, dancers, and musicians. Amazing!
Man I'm only 41 but these two make me feel like I'm 85 😂😂😂
Love the channel.
I was stationed in the UK back in the late 80’s and early 90’s while I was in the Air Force and this song was huge.
Another British R&B name from that era that you should try out is Mica Paris. She had hits like “Breathe Life Into Me” and “My One Temptation”. Both great songs. Her duet with Will Downing on a cover of “Where Is the Love” is a must-listen as well.
Me too, I was in the AF serving in Germany at the time. AFN and AFRTS radio 📻
The song that ushered us out of the 80's and into the 90's in the UK. A great time to be listening to music as a young teen. This song just transports me
I remember dancing to this in the club back in the day when I was in the Army. Good times! I had this album on cassette tape lol
Ooh, classic dance groove from my senior year of high school!!!
Loose Ends was a major british R&B band in the 80's they had some big time hits . Hangin on string , slow down , nights of pleasure , mr bachelor, and many more
Such a great track. Really takes me back - happy to see you appreciating some British talent. You need to check out the British Jazz-Rap group Us3. Their 1993 track, Cantaloop (flip fantasia) has everything you love in one place!
OMG, I haven't heard Cantaloop in forever! That was such a cool song.
Yes yes this is when music was still good
Caron Wheeler is the lead singer. She did a lot of backup singing for other artists during the 80’s (like for Howard Jones). Their other hit song was “Keep On Moving (Don’t Stop).
All these years later and I still can't believe they lost the best new artist Grammy to Milli Vanilli, highway robbery! For more Brittish R&B try the Brand New Heavies with "Stay this Way."
I agree! If only the Grammys knew what everyone would soon find out lol!
Not only were they frauds but they're music was terrible. One of many reasons you can't take the Grammies seriously. Beyonce ( I do not understand her appeal) breaks the record for most Grammies yet David Bowie has to die to win a proper Grammy.
BNH are fabulous
Love young folk appreciating music from back in the day.
This song was SO BIG. It was heard all the time and everywhere! It felt like it was out for a year.
I'm 71 and would definitely still get up and dance to this song!
This was such a vibe! I never get tired of this song or the whole album.
Caron Wheeler is the beautiful vocalist and Jazzy B. was the guy with the dread ponytail.
Hello from the UK, this song was a big hit in the 9os, the song is about a near-death experience. The lead singer is Caron Wheeler, she is a British lover rock singer.
