This was right in the same wheel house as artists like Teena Marie. There are a few others that you haven't checked out, though. "Meeting in the Ladies Room" by Klymaxx, "Mercedes Boy" by Pebbles, "The Way You Love Me" by Karyn White; "A Love Bizarre" by Sheila E. (feat. Prince), and "Everybody Everybody" by Black Box.
@Patrick Hodges Now that you mention it, I think I like "Do You Wanna Get Away" the best out of her hits. That song rocks! I bet Amber and Jay would love it. Also - thank you for all of the 80s music anecdotes you post. I think we had parallel childhoods or something, ha. You'd definitely beat me in an 80's music trivia contest, and that's saying a lot. This is what we call FREESTYLE. Freestyle music is the best genre of EDM (electronic dance music). Freestyle was huge in the 80's and 90's. Freestyle is still popular today. I just went to a huge Freesyle concert in Orlando at the Amway Center, 20k people attended. It was 1984 and I was out one very hot Saturday night on the west side of Chicago at a very popular dance club. Like always, the dance floor was packed shoulder to shoulder by all these amazingly talented, beautiful couples just tearing up the dance floor. For reasons I can't recall, probably heat exhaustion, around 1:30 am the dance floor was empty for a brief period and Shannon's "Let the Music Play" fired up and right away a couple ran out there that were very different from all the folks you'd normally see out there dancing for they were both very large and considerably older than everyone else. I remember better than half the people in the club were either giving them a ""Are you two serious?" type looks and many pointing and laughing with their friends. I thought it was absolutely awesome that these two folks, who appeared to be in love, having a beautiful night out and didn't have a single f*ck to give what anybody else in that club thought and just blew me away with how much fun they were having. You should have seen them out there just gliding around the dance floor as if they were were skating on ice. She was mouthing the words and the two of them were acting out the lyrics to the song. By the time the song had ended I don't think there was a person in the club that wasn't part of this amazing roar of approval at the conclusion their moment out there alone on the dance floor. For some reason this sticks with me and it's probably because it was one of the most beautiful, awesome feeling and kick-ass displays that I've ever witnessed.
YES!!! You’re getting to the dance music!!!! I’m a teenager back in Brooklyn, cruising while blasting this song again on the way to the club; yep, we got in every time 😀. Please react to Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam’s “I WONDER IF I TAKE YOU HOME”; it was a huge hit and is a toe dip into 80’s “Freestyle” music ❤️❤️❤️
YESSS MORE FREESTYLE MUSIC!! We wanna see Jay jamming in his seat! Please check out Stevie B - Spring Love, Party your body, Dreamin’ of love, & In my eyes..
I made a fool of myself on the dance floor many times to this music. Back in the day, you got out on the floor whether you could dance or not. Great memories.
Really interesting that in the early 80's I was mostly a rocker and also into new wave, but I heard this song and INSTANTLY LOVED it!! This was when disco was transitioning to club music. I had the DJ make me a mix-tape with this on it.
I suggested this almost a year ago, glad you got around to it. The song is basically dance club culture, dancing with a stranger before even knowing their name, unspoken vibes, but no one is committed to dance with the same person. So she was getting her groove on with a guy, then another song came on and he moved on to dance with someone else and she is just trusting the music and the groove to bring him back to her. This was a very common occurence in the clubs back then. The other band of this genre I think of is PLANET PATROL with tracks like Cheap Thrills, Play it at your own risk, and I didn't know I loved you til I saw you rock and roll.
In my area, we have a charity event each spring called The 80's Prom where you dress up like you were back in the 80's and boogie down to awesome 80's music.
East Los Angeles, early 80’s, I’m a Metalhead, my disco friends invite me to a backyard party to meet girls, cool songs playing then the DJ plays this LOUD and I’m mesmerized by the sound and how many people started to dance and pop-lock…right after this, DJ played Nucleus “Jam on it”… nearly 40 yrs later still remember that night, good times…
Shannon was one of the first to introduce Latin Freestyle into the clubs. Latin freestyle was a popular genre in the 80s, characterized by sporadic, dark, syncopated rhythms (similar to Latin American rhythms) and synths out the wazoo. It became a fast, cheap way to make hits. Thanks for this video! That said, you guys should react to some of Alisha's stuff. All Night Passion, Do You Dream About Me? (from the movie Mannequin featuring a young Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall) , and Too Turned On are some of her popular ones.
What’s interesting is that freestyle music was mostly created by blacks and latins, like hip hop in the beginning especially in the Bronx. Blacks artists developed hip hop and Latin artists developed Latin freestyle which was a hybrid of club, some disco elements, minor keys heavy, hip hop elements and synth pop elements. As the genre grew more Latin influenced beats came in as well.
You have opened up a rabbit hole of the genre of "freestyle" or "Latin Freestyle".... A VIIIIIBE! Especially in roller skating rinks. Anyone calling this disco doesn't know what they're talking about. Try Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam- I Wonder if I Take you Home, or Nu Shooz- I can't wait.
One of my most favorite songs of all time, thanks for reacting to it. :) It might be the first song I ever heard with a Roland TB-303. "Give Me Tonight" was another popular song of hers.
This was the New York to Miami club music sound of the 80's which included artists like Stevie B, Debbie Deb, Trinere, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Expose, The Cover Girls, Pebbles, Klymaxx and Joyce Sims. Check out these hits. They were the jams back then. Trinere - They're Playing Our Song Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - I Wonder If I Take You Home The Cover Girls - Show Me Stevie B - Spring Love Expose - Point Of No Return Expose - Come Go With Me Debbie Deb - When I Hear Music Debbie Deb - Look Out Weekend Klymaxx - Meeting In The Ladies Room Pebbles - Mercedes Boy Pebbles - Girlfriend Joyce Sims - Come Into My Life
This was a huge hit for Shannon in 1983. Check out Jody Watley's hits, Real Love, Looking for a New Love, Everything, Friends, and Don't You Want Me. Also, check out Pebbles and her hits Girlfriend and Mercedes Boy! And check out Karyn White and her mega-hit, Superwoman! These were some of the top hit makers of the eighties. 💖💖
I remember Shannon from the Streetsounds albums in the UK with 'Give Me Tonight'. I requested this song at the school disco in '83 and the crowd clearing so some of the lads could show off their breakdance moves! (I believe she was a classically trained vocalist too!) Awesome tune 😃
this song is considered the first freestyle of all time, believe it or not another banger from this era is by Nu Shooz called "I Can't Wait", you both would love it!
This is from the 80s Freestyle genre. You should listen to more Freestyle like Debbie Deb Look Out Weekend. Lisa Lisa, expose, the cover girls are all apart of that genre as well
I just got up and did the parts of the breakdance routine my crew had..🤣😂..only the poppin' parts of course. I think my wife was impressed, definitely surprised...thank you ...1
This was one of my favorites in the early 80s !!! You two chair dancing is the way we danced on the floor moving and bouncing around…lol the clubs loved this song!!😘
I worked in a record store when this came out. Everyone liked this song. I remember talking to "metal heads" and even they thought it was a great song. 1
I need to check to see of the Soul Train dancers did a line dance feature to this song. ... Funny, when I was in my 20s this song came out, but I was too fixated on rock to give the song its due. As I've gotten older, my horizons have expanded--more to love out there. Great stuff.
You just now tapped into the Freestyle genre with Shannon other groups to check out are Debbie Deb, Expose', Trinere, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam and many more...
‘Centipede’ by Rebbie Jackson, ‘Meeting In The Ladies’ Room’ by Klymaxx, ‘Change Your Mind’ by Sharpe & Numan, ‘New Thing From London Town’ by Sharpe & Numan
Great song. Brings back great memories of the 80s and dancing to it. I remember buying the 12 inch extended play single. Give me tonight another good one by Shannon.
It doesn't get more 80s sounding than this! This was my era, and let me tell you, it was fabulous. The music 🎶, the clothes, the dancing 🕺 💃. Hey, has anyone invented a time machine yet? Oohhh, I wish. 🤞❣🔥🎼🎙
Unfortunately this is a very shortened single edit and you guys missed so much of what makes this song epic, the extended dance version especially the version which starts off with an instrumental portion that leads into a fierce whipping sound and the song then kicks in. There is a great break in the middle of the dance version which is full of sounds which you would really get into Jay. I recommend you guys check out another of her hits which Amber I think you would get into the story, it’s called “Give Me Tonight”, but, if you do choose to react to it please make sure it’s the 12” extended version to fully appreciate the production and the epic 80s sounds you’ll hear. Shannon also had another hit called “Do You Wanna Get Away” which was another banger, but, personally, I think “Give Me Tonight” is a better choice.
I went to a aerobics class one and will it finish I haven't even broken into a sweat I realise it was because at the time I was dancing to 12 inch extended remixes of tracked like this. You can't beat the 80s
Shannon was part of the Freestyle Dance movement (not to be confused with Freestyle Rap). This is a kind of electronic dance music that was popular in the mid to late 80s, which I don't think you've reacted to until now. It was mostly an underground dance club scene, but some songs like this one did hit the charts. It competed with New Wave Synth dance clubs. You can read about this music style in the Freestyle Music article in Wikipedia. If you do any more freestyle songs, I highly recommend the following: The Cover Girls - Because Of You - ruclips.net/video/lSwDOENwNR8/видео.html Expose - Exposed to Love - ruclips.net/video/23MGB8QtLgI/видео.html Cynthia - Thief of Hearts - ruclips.net/video/-d42VJ8AgnU/видео.html There are tons of others! Rob will especially love these songs!

Istantly takes me back to my childhood i was 5 and was having the time of my life the 80's and 90's was my time and what a wonderful time it was....
I read somewhere that Shannon was still in high school when she recorded this.
Yessssss I keep saying the same when they do 80’s bangers!!
@@jackie_jrml Right? I hope more are coming! 😊
YESSS MORE FREESTYLE MUSIC!! We wanna see Jay jamming in his seat! Please check out Stevie B - Spring Love, Party your body, Dreamin’ of love, & In my eyes..
How can you NOT move with this beat right?! 🤣
YES...one of my favorite songs of all time!
Top tune of the breakdance era. If you love this early 80s pop gem maybe give a listen to The Pointer Sisters "Automatic"
I made a fool of myself on the dance floor many times to this music. Back in the day, you got out on the floor whether you could dance or not. Great memories.
Thanks -- my high school dance team routine just came back to me.....we won tons of competitions with this sick beat LOL!!!
Really interesting that in the early 80's I was mostly a rocker and also into new wave, but I heard this song and INSTANTLY LOVED it!! This was when disco was transitioning to club music. I had the DJ make me a mix-tape with this on it.
Shanon 1983 NYC Summer was heated up! 🔥🔥🔥❤🔥🔥🔥
That’s a dope story, good visualization!
Great story!
Soooo smooth rockin!!!! Danced and just happy doing it!!!! Just let your body do the moves… that’s dancing.
Oh I had this record and played in constantly- Great dance groove throwback! 💃💃. 💕💙
Freestyle Classic
Y'all dance to this song just like you were doing. This one would empty seats and pack the floor, along with a couple others. Great memories!! Thanks.
80s club music is a mood. I need y’all to hear some Ready For The World. “Digital Display” or “Oh Sheila” puhleeeez!
Trinere - They're Playing Our Song
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - I Wonder If I Take You Home
The Cover Girls - Show Me
Stevie B - Spring Love
Expose - Point Of No Return
Expose - Come Go With Me
Debbie Deb - When I Hear Music
Debbie Deb - Look Out Weekend
Klymaxx - Meeting In The Ladies Room
Pebbles - Mercedes Boy
Pebbles - Girlfriend
Joyce Sims - Come Into My Life
This track was/is sampled a lot in hip-hop! It's referred to as the "Shannon sound".
When I was a freshmen in HS MY best friend( guy) and I would have dance competitions to all of her music so many good memories
Ooooh yeah Jody Watley Don't you want me!! And ALL those!
Yes, Shalimar Night To Remember or Paula Abdul's Vibeology or Opposites Attrack
1983!? I feel older now 😑
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey kids..... this is '80s, '90s freestyle music! lol
Great music.
I danced with my girlfriend/wife to this song countless times when I was stationed in South Korea in 1985.
Oh and getting into freestyle. Definitely check out the cover girls song show me and Noels song silent morning.
You asked how we danced to this back in the day…We danced to it exactly like you both were dancing only standing.
This was a dance floor mob song back in the day. Even the poindexter got in and grooved, lol.
Wow! Totally reminds me of The Apple House in Okinawa, Japan in the early 80’s…any other Marines remember that?
I was in seventh grade when this came out and I had a huge crush on a girl named Shannon Johnson! Sigh. My love went unrequited...
this song is considered the first freestyle of all time, believe it or not
another banger from this era is by Nu Shooz called "I Can't Wait", you both would love it!
This song is credited with the birth of Freestyle dance music from mid 1980’s - mid 1990’s.
This is from the 80s Freestyle genre. You should listen to more Freestyle like Debbie Deb Look Out Weekend. Lisa Lisa, expose, the cover girls are all apart of that genre as well
'80s and '90s freestyle music! Do more of it!
J&A... from New Zealand, Split Enz "I Got You". Hit from the early 80s.
When you were in the club and this song came on. BOOM! Hit the dance floor!
I use to break dance to this, brings back some very good memories 👍
Lock,pop and shock
I worked in a record store when this came out. Everyone liked this song. I remember talking to "metal heads" and even they thought it was a great song. 1
I am a Metal Head and I always liked this song. Fun to play on a keyboard too.
Shannon - Give Me Tonight. A must listen. Shannon had a literal wall of sound behind her.
There were 1 hour remixes to this that kept us on the dance floor for hours!
Yeah I agree, the extended version especially the beginning, rocks
I agree this version sounded off.
Yes, I use to dj and always played the 12" versions to dance to. "Give me tonight" is another one. A good slow mix also from Shanon was "It's You"
Word!
I went to a aerobics class one and will it finish I haven't even broken into a sweat I realise it was because at the time I was dancing to 12 inch extended remixes of tracked like this. You can't beat the 80s
OMG you have just opened the door leading to a whole Other world
Shannon was part of the Freestyle Dance movement (not to be confused with Freestyle Rap).
If you do any more freestyle songs, I highly recommend the following:
The Cover Girls - Because Of You - ruclips.net/video/lSwDOENwNR8/видео.html
Expose - Exposed to Love - ruclips.net/video/23MGB8QtLgI/видео.html
Cynthia - Thief of Hearts - ruclips.net/video/-d42VJ8AgnU/видео.html
There are tons of others! Rob will especially love these songs!
Popular here in the states, early '90s as well. Especially bigger cities.
