One of the best UK Soul groups! And they were Fashion leaders as well. 😎
The Guy with the Dreds is Jazzie B. He had a Clothes Shop in North London,……I used to go there all the time….to buy new stuff, as a Teen. 😀 The Singer's name is Caron Wheeler by the way.
You should react to Loose Ends “Hanging on a String” next! Another great UK Soul group.

Growing up in the late 80s/early 90s, Sout II Soul was THAT GROUP. This was a solid vibe from them that still plays on Black radio in the States even to this day. One of the few ensemble black groups from the UK to really break thru here and keep going for about a good 5 year span.

This was a total banger back in the day (still is). My first thought when I saw you were reacting to it was "ohhh....you're going to like this one". Just a piece of trivia: The singer/songwriter (Caron Wheeler) says it was written about a near death experience in which she nearly passed on but was sent "back to life" to fulfill the rest of her mission on Earth, saying: "Back to Life" came about from my own pain and I nearly died..."

This was a banging song back in the day. As teenagers and early 20 somethings in the late 80s and early 90s we loved this song and many early hip hop songs like this in those days. House parties were the thing back then and where I’m from it was about 98% white. It’s changed now but we loved all these songs.
I’m telling you straight up that it was a lot of white people that helped usher in these artists and songs. Don’t let anyone tell you anything different.
The politicians, lawyers and lobbyists on the tv propaganda machine have been trying to divide us by color since I can remember. Don’t let them !

This was the sound of the summer of love in UK 1988 to 1989. Warehouse parties, 'illegal' raves and hip hop night clubs. Ecstasy opened everyone minds. Soul2soul came to define the vibe, taking club culture mainstream, no 1 in the charts. I melt to this song now, taking me back 36 years. Love to all us old ravers❤

Soul II Soul was less a band and more a project by the British DJ Jazzie B. The lineup shifted even between songs so there was never a consistent sound. The 80s was the era of these studio bands. For "Back to Life" the singer is Caron Wheeler and the 'sound' that caught your attention is the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. Wheeler is one of the writers of this song and gave an interesting story during an interview:
"Back to Life" came about from my own pain and I nearly died... I nearly died and literally came back to life and I was mad, because where I had gone in between that was so wonderful... but I basically didn't pass over at that point... I was mad, I was like, "Why do you want me here? However do you want me? What do you need from me?" You know, I was talking to my creator, but it sounds like a party song on the record.
If you like this, check out Incognito- specifically the era when Maysa Leak was the lead singer. Check out the song "A Shade of Blue" from the 1995 Icognito album Beneath the Surface.

Soul ii soul epitomises my youth. I'm a 55 year young gay man. My first ever cassette tapes (if you know what they are) we're from this band. I went to a gay pride March in London. At Hyde park there was a tent with this music playing. The tent was packed with black gay wonen. Amazing vibe from everyone. This is one big nostalgia trip for me. Love Soul II Soul. ❤

If ever you get the chance to see them live, go, they are amazing. I last saw them a couple of years ago, so, so good.

I played this on my sony walkman as I danced across rhe Prison Yard to the gate on the day of my release from a 3 yr sentence! I told the whole prison how I was going out and the noise, cheers, and laughter from hundreds of prisoners as I bopped my way out of prison was incredible! I like to think i gave all the rhe prisoners a good show and put a smile on their faces! P.S I got 3 years for taking out 3 white guys with a baseball bat who were trying to rob my sisters place!! But the jury believed 3 white guys who suited up for court over a the "mixed race thug!" Thats UK Justice in the 1980s! 🤨

For me, this was my representation. Black and British and proud of all our elements. Everyone welcome. We had lots of other music we listened to. Two Tone, Reggae, American Mowtown, British Artists... . But this was ours, like our version of Reggae we called "Lovers Rock". 😊
