That was one serious workout for Yoyoka. She's so young but was able to handle it so perfectly with really awesome power. And it didn't seem to stress or fatigue her. Hi Wave Potter ,thank you for doing these great drum videos, I just discovered Yoyoka this evening and she blew me away. I was lucky to see Rainbow with Cozy Powell doing this as the opener for the concert in Munich in 1976, incredible show! Was 16 at the time, now both Cozy and Ronnie have left the building, but the memory stays, keep on rockin' !
At least in Japan, Cozy was the icon of double bass drum style. He influenced many drummers to change their style to double bass. And "Kill the King" was the most iconic tune for double bass drum. Still a masterpiece in 2021!! Yoyoka definitely inherited Cozy's vibes!! Wild off beat hi-hats and the double bass/tom works during the guitar solo!! She is so versatile, AMAZING!!

As I have seen almost all of Yoyoka’s covers/performances, it’s almost a given to expect the power and impeccable technique. Her playing makes you forget again that she’s still a ‘baby’. She thrives with these complicated pieces which really showcases her awesome skills and put a shine on her gift. Such a joy to watch. Just letting her sticks do the entertaining. Cozy Powell had a real cool Star Licks drumming video I had on VHS when I was learning double kick in my 20's. I'm 62 now and still drumming with double kicks at church!
Listening to Rainbow in 1984 was how I got into Dio. This was, to me, one of the first supergroups. Each of members were outstanding musicians in their own rights.

Well, Rainbow was before your time. Amongst the other drumming legends that Yoyoka can cover flawlessly: Neil Peart, John Bonham, Carmine Appice, Ian Paice & Stewart Copeland..She can also play adequate Keyboards, Guitar & bass. She can compose original songs too. and she's taking English lessons. Her technical progress has been scary. She is ranked (by Drummerworld) as one of the 500 best drummers in the world.
There are a lot of amazing points in this video, but the tempo change at 2:27 and 2:45, which you also pointed out, changed the quick whip-like hand movements into what seems like slow motion (although the foot pedal movement is the same as before). I couldn't believe that she could go from such repetitive and fast hand movements to such precise tempo changes without stopping. Also, her snare and toms are properly tuned and muted, so even when she hits them hard, it doesn't interfere with the singer's voice.
@@340rps yeah she doesn't have much standing, it's mostly sitting from what I've seen. most drummers sit, I believe. this is a joke btw, in case no one gets out.
Cozy was one of my most favorite drummers ever. In fact, before leaving this comment, I just had to zip over to watch Jeff Beck and Cozy Powell jam out on a heavy funk/soul/hard rock song (sounds like a Band-Maid song don't it) called "Got The Feeling" recorded live at the Beat Club in 1971. Anyway, Rainbow is a top band, but if you check them out, there were several phases of Rainbow. You want the the first phase with Dio on vocals. Cozy played on those albums. Check out "Stargazer" (amazing drum intro) and "Man on the Silver Mountain".
I used to click on her videos because she makes me happy. Seeing a cute little girl beat the crap out of a drum set and having fun makes me smile. Now I click on her videos to watch one of the best drummers alive today.
What's even more incredible is she does this by ear. She can read music, but she says she is too lazy. She listens to the music a few times then her dad sets up cameras and she goes for it. One shot no editing.
It's one thing to "play" a song, it entirely another to "perform" a song. She's got that. There's probably so many other artists that want to collab with her. She's gonna be sooooo busy and in demand. Already is, really.
Never seen anyone change tempo so easily and flawlessly while always remaining in the pocket. And such powerful hits that she actually cracked two cymbals playing this. Luckily she has so many endorsements she can afford to destroy her kit in the name of perfection! Factory conversation.... "Yoyoka just killed another set of cymbals. Hey Wave. I have been wondering about her finding this music, I mean she was into it liberally from age 2. There has to have been a guide in there somewhere, and its got to be her parents. Damn, she was always a prodigy, she just does not slow down, improving all the time... 🤯, mind blown.
In another video, Yoyoka explains how she finds the songs she likes to cover by listening to CDs, RUclips etc. She says for example that she found 'Good Times, Bad Times' herself and her parents weren't aware of the song.
Great reaction and you probably don't know Rainbow as that was back in the 70's. But if you listen, you'll hear echo's of Burn and this is Richie Blackmore's band after quitting Deep Purple. I'm betting her parents know this band as they seem to cover a lot of the 60's/70's rock.
I do believe her parents who are not so old rockers point her in this direction sometimes. I know Yoyo scans RUclips for music and she loves to read. She is so bright that nothing she does surprises me as it used to. I just accept she’s a brilliant young lady. Pat 🏴
If you liked Rainbow then you might also want to give a listen to another influential, yet strangely overlooked, British band, UFO. Particularly their 70's and 80's albums, maybe starting with Phenomenon...
Rainbow was probably the hottest band of the late seventies and was a spin of from another mega band called Deep Purple. For more of Cozy Powell you can check out his work with Emerson, Lake, and Powell, or more Rainbow from the On Stage, live album.
Can't believe you've never heard of Rainbow bro. That's where Ronnie James Dio kind of became a household name, and then the afore mentioned Cozy Powell. And maybe you've heard of the guitarist... a guy named Ritchie Blackmore...? Anyway, I've been a big fan for many years and Miss Yoyoka nailed it! Cheers!
I think she has four brains! One for each limb! Otherwise, how could they all be doing something dramatically different with each limb at the same time with only one brain!
As a musician I know that the drummer is the one who sets the beat for the song but since she's playing along with an already produced song I will make this comment. First I think the Yoyoka is an amazing drummerbut in the first half of this song she was a little ahead of the beat but dead on in the 2nd half. Just something i noticed. She's a prodigy and I love watching her play.
It's funny but I really can't believe that this young lady is only 11 years old, playing so loud and with the precision of a metronome, I don't know what to say only, WOW Lol :)
Wooww mantaap, kopi mana kopi, Wave? Yoyoka did an amazing cover to Kill The King's Cozy Powell drum.. You know Wave, there's only 2 best rock drummer in the planet, Cozy Powell of Rainbow and Scott Travis of Judas Priest. Both of 'em are monsters.
It's a generational thing. Rainbow was the band founded by Ritchie Blackmore after leaving Deep Purple. Blackmore basically invented the metal shred solo, before anyone called it metal. Rainbow featured Ronnie James Dio and Cozy Powell. Dio, of course, was probably the definitive metal vocalist. Go check out everything they did, it will change your life.
I think this person is reincarnated as Cozy Powell. What an awesome young drummer. BTW I know you never heard of Rainbow or Cozy Powell she is playing it note for note, which makes it more spectacular . I've had drummers In profession bands, That did not like this song. Remember we had no speed pedals back in those days you really had to do the double kick. Calf and Ankle cramps lol So we dropped that cover lol it wasn't worth the aggravation or fighting.
Wonderful! How is that possible at her age 😀 I saw Rainbow 🌈 in 1976 on their first tour. What a band. Cozy had a big unique sound, in many ways on a par with Zepp’s John Bonham. This is one of the best concert openers. Unfortunately Ritchie didn’t rate it as highly as the fans and left it out of his Rainbow reunion concerts in 2018. There is a DVD of a great gig in Germany 🇩🇪 in 1977 which Blackmore managed to get to at the last minute as he’d been arrested on the previous gig. He intervened when a bouncer manhandled a female fan near the stage (RB broke his jaw apparently)
I don't really know music but it sounded like a lot of creativity there and her energy and showmanship is amazing. I saw you asked for a Yoyoka cover of The Dance of Eternity. While you're waiting for that, Tamu of Nemophila has covered The Dance of Eternity here: ruclips.net/video/ZsuH0xRvLbU/видео.html
It would be unfair to expect that Yoyoka can already play such a complex piece. She still lacks the experience and the speed with the double kicks. Tamu was about 25 when she played it and she comes from the jazz corner.

Something has to account for the complete independent control she has of her 4+ quadrants.
I'm coming back in Dec, 2024.:)
Barely off subject here... Her drums always sound awesome of course, as you've said. Did you know she uses 11 mics?
Side note… this song is actually about a game of chess.
The early albums with singer Ronnie James Dio and Cozy Powell are the best.
Wonderful! How is that possible at her age 😀
I saw Rainbow 🌈 in 1976 on their first tour.
Listen to Rainbows song Stargazer..top 10 of all
I don't really know music but it sounded like a lot of creativity there and her energy and showmanship is amazing.
I saw you asked for a Yoyoka cover of The Dance of Eternity. While you're waiting for that, Tamu of Nemophila has covered The Dance of Eternity here: ruclips.net/video/ZsuH0xRvLbU/видео.html
No way! That’s awesome! Thank you for sharing this!
It would be unfair to expect that Yoyoka can already play such a complex piece. She still lacks the experience and the speed with the double kicks.
Tamu was about 25 when she played it and she comes from the jazz corner.
These songs are way older than you are
I predict you will meet Yoyoka in about six months. :)
Good prediction! 😂
Never heard of Cozy Powell?
You know Yoyoka plays every instrument and does lead vocals and back up, on her cover of the Beatles
Thanks for letting me know! And yes I did know that! Amazing musician.

Rainbow was a Utah band before Boston.
