There is one thing you should notice. She is self-taught. Before she could even talk, she was always drawn to the drums. When her parents practiced she would always crawl towards them. And the only foreign band that her parents knew about was The Beatles, they had never heard of Led Zeppelin before her. All the songs and bands she discovered by herself. And learn how to play by herself, only by ear. And I think that is a big difference. She was pushing her parents from the start, not the other way around (what is usually the case).

Yes, there is a nice video where she explains how she works to make and record a cover. And this was maybe when she was 10. First she searches for a song she likes. Then she learns it. Then she sets up the recording of sound and video, tunes the drums etc. Then she do the recording. Then she edit it. Then she upload it. Never did she say, then I asked dad to ... not even when it did come to choose music. Because her dad did not really know about all bands she found and liked.

As others have said, Yoyoka's only gone from strength to strength, and is now living in the US, in LA. She's had a mix of self-teaching and some great mentors, and just raw natural talent.
She's covered some of the most difficult drum parts in her cover videos, and live, and is part of the Ken Okada (spelling?) jazz ensemble, which I believe has a Grammy winning sax player as part of the group. She's getting regular notice by some major names; her cover of Deep Purple's Burn was actually reacted to on RUclips by the master himself Ian Paice, and Robert Plant favourably reviewed this particular performance lol.
Check out more on her channel. She's got some wonderful original material in which she is clearly challenging herself and leaving us all in awe hehe.

You are correct! She will be 15 on Oct 12. No disrespect intended. Except for the "pretty good" part. Pretty good is for really talented kids "for their age". She is "awesome", and able to play things many drummers with 20-30 years experience are just simply unable to play. She was voted one of the Top 500 Drummers OF ALL TIME (by DrummerWorld) at age 11, youngest ever. Prodigy level for sure.

@@Glen.Black. And yet through it all, she keeps it real and so humble, a real team player. From what I've seen of her sweet personality I don't think she'll ever fall into the trap of being so full of oneself that often happens. She respects her craft as well as others, and respects music in general no matter what the genre. Her family is also to be admired for their support and participation, as well as guidance from friends like you Glen.

@@markdecker6190 Thanks Mark! I agree 100% with you. You are spot on! I spent a lot of time with her and her family in Las Vegas when they home stayed with me. She is so kind and polite. The music business, as you know has a dark side that many get sucked into. I really have no concern of her falling into that. I met EllenPlaysBass through her and attended her recording session of "The Ocean". Ellen lives less than 2 miles from me and I have remained friends with her father Hovak. I bought YOYOKA, her father and two friends tickets to the Silk Sonic concert and I got to sit next to her and watch her taking everything in. Then, because of her, I got to go backstage and meet Anderson.Paak, who treated us wonderfully. She gave me a personal concert after I asked her if she ever played anything with chopsticks, and she said no. I grabbed every empty container I could find and set up a "kit". Her mom held the pieces in place while I recorded it for myself. Definitely a highlight of my life! Fortunately she has a lot of fans that feel the way we do. Thanks again for your comment!

Had to listen to her play this at least 6 times before I could accept it was not some type of trick. I4 yrs old and is a master. She went on to play numerous Led songs and is known by her followers as Jon Bonhams reincarnation. Not to be pigeon holed at nine years old she did a ton of rock songs with incredible skills and actually sat in for the drummer of Fall Out Boy to play a song in concert at 9yrs old. She has gone on to play many songs of highly accomplished drummers. Plays with professional artist at the Whiskey A Go Go. As she and her family recently moved to the USA.

Brilliant review. So we start up watching expecting some tinkety plonk 8 yr old and boom this mind warping gobsmacking exploding bundle of energy is powering through a rock classic like it was nothing. You can only imagine what her parents were dealing with, both of them professional musicians, and the beautiful thing is that with only modest means they have sacrificed a lot to support Yoyoka. I think They must have felt a sense of obligation to treasure such talent. They uprooted the family to move to the states, living in modest houses and suffering problems with basic utilities. Many child prodigies burn out but here this was never likely. Her legions of fans have been following her progress and they will atttest that Yoyoka, also known as the Hokkaido Hammer, or The Professor has never for one second disappointed. She holds the highest standards of professionalism and integrity which is a credit to her and her family. Look forward to more of your reviews, it is through reviews from drummers that we the fans have learned to better appreciate the craft. Oh and did anyone mention she was giving tutorials before she was hardly out of diapers?

She was born October 2009. She sat in with pro bands pre teen (Fall Out Boy and Cyndi Lauper) and was gigging at 6 years old. There is a you tube video of her at that time playing a stripped down version of "Onyx" and taking solos. Her progress has been stellar. The youngest person to be endorsed by pearl, and you can listen to anything she has done since and be pretty amazed. Ian Paice (who watched her "Burn" cover, Robert Plant (Who saw this) and Dave Grohl have all praised and encouraged her. She can play anything. She now resides in the USA and plays jam nights at the Whiskey A Go Go, behind pro musicians who seem to love her. At now 14 years of age she is beyond pro standard, and is cited among the top 500 drummers world wide. You'll have to check out her studio performance of the Ocean where in one take, no rehearsal and no click track she played with a then 9 year old Ellen (Bass), and teenagers Eva (vocal) and Mateo (guitar), the Led Zeppelin song "The Ocean". Four amazing young musicians. I love that she does the take and posts it errors (very rare) and all. I say cherry pick your favorite tracks. She's next level now. Check out her covers of Colorado Bulldog (recent) or Led Boots (Recent) and you'll see. I've enjoyed watching this young lady grow up behind the kit having found her during Covid, and now you've found the rabbit hole it's a great place to spend some time. Shout out to her parents and mentors too for feeding the dream. Have fun and be well.

Yoyoka is a once in a lifetime prodigy. She is actually better than anyone else I have seen. And there are lots of skilled kids out there. She could play in a jazz band at 6. In a band! Not doing a cover. She totally understand music and has a totally uncanny memory. She can hear a song twice and then play it note for note. She is also totally nerdy on technique. She had a drum school that she started at 7 I think, where she did teach common techniques and also techniques she had invented. She is 14 now and has already done more than most drummers do in their lifetime. But, you have to remember that she is a kid. She is also probably slightly autistic. Some years ago I was kind of worried, because she was so good and wanted so much, but generally, she was not mature enough. She wanted to US, and I was worried. What will happen? But, her fantastic family moved to the US. And now it seems she is making great success. But still, she is now only 14 and, except for drumming, she is just a teenager. I wish her all well and hope life works out for her and she will be known as the best drummer ever. It is actually a possibility.
Just as a side note; her parents are good musicians and also her little brother. There are some very fun videos where the entire family is jamming.

    • @rolandkarlsson7072

One more comment. There are other small kids that can play significantly faster than Yoyoka. So, if you measure skills with speed, then Yoyoka is not extra ordinary. Where Yoyoka shines is groove and understanding of the music needs. She also have a very good memory and can play a song exactly as even a very good drummer, but then she add Yoyoka flairs. Often enhancing the original.

Shido is her younger brother. He covered Roundabout by Yes and 21st century schizoid man by King Crimson. Why? Because they were part of the soundtrack of a favorite anime? All the Soma family are multi instrumentalists and singers.

I'm no expert but I don't know if I agree that she's on the spectrum. I just watched her livestream from the other day (her English is really coming along) and I didn't pick that up at all.

@powerdavid - If you get stunned within 10 seconds, stops and tells so and really means it, then it might be a top notch reaction. I am soo tired of all that has to comment on stopping. And so are many reactors. Som even tells you to go elsewhere if you do not like stopping. Yes, there are not so good reactors that just stops without thinking or having anything to say. But, this reactor do have something intelligent to say. Then let him stopp!
