  • Dr Chris Palmer, M.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He explains the important connection between nutrition, metabolism and mental health and his pioneering work using the ketogenic diet to successfully treat patients with various mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, and even schizophrenia.
Dr. Palmer explains how the ketogenic diet is an evidenced-based treatment for epilepsy, puts us in an optimal metabolic state, and can offset the cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s. He gives a masterclass on the key roles of mitochondria in mental health, how certain conditions likely arise from mitochondrial dysfunction, and how low-carbohydrate diets increase mitochondrial turnover and function to improve mental health.
Dr. Palmer’s work stands as a revolutionary approach to mental health and disease that, given the prevalence of mental health challenges, should be of interest to people of all backgrounds and ages. More can be found in his new book "Brain Energy" that is sure to revolutionize the field of psychiatry and how we treat mental disorders.

My little boy has autism. He is 4 , he is kind and funny but tested positive for autism .. His IQ was 79. I changed his diet … put him on a 90% beef, eggs, butter , cottage cheese, cheese, salmon, sardines ( yes he loves sardines) chicken, pork… and 10 Oz whole milk kefir. Within 2 months, he started acting normal. He started playing the piano like a protege. He is doing 2nd grade Math, Science, Language Arts… and studying criminal and civil law 😂😂… I think I cured autism…. Just maybe…

I am shizophrenic with depression and anxiety issues. After 3 days of carnivore my depression, anxiety and inner anger is totally GONE! No joke! I couldnt believe it! After 1 week my negative symptoms of the shizophrenia is better. I was laying in bed most of the time, low energy, needed 2 hours in the morning to get awake. After 1 week of carnivore I had high energy, could get up immidetly out of bed and have such a good mood I did not have the last 2 years. After 1 week I reintroduced some plant food and i got very bad reactions that I found out comes from lectines. Got autoimmune reactions from them and feel like crap. Depression and anxiety came back. Now I am back on carnivore and feel better. Thank you very much for this interview!!! You both changed my life!!!

Love this! Psychotherapist and research scientist here, I have multiple sclerosis and I'm currently on the carnivore lifestyle as of October last year. Doing fantastic. My focus and "brain fog" from MS has really improved, muscle fatigue has reduced, and general pain has near subsided. Spasticity has also greatly improved, and I wake up most mornings forgetting that I have MS! What a blessing. I wasn't expecting any improvements at all since I was really declining and my neurologist expressed concern around me having progressive MS. I love the carnivore diet, and I'm convinced that it truly is helping me. Can't wait until you have a guest speaker with MS on your show. Thank you!

I love Dr Palmer’s passion for what he had learned. Regarding autism, another theory involves the effect of glyphosate on children. All the grain based snacks that kids eat may contain glyphosate. Many parents of auto kids report that their child was typical until, say, age 3, and then they regressed, stopped talking, etc. That a viral infection could cause that is certainly possible, especially if the child is developing some metabolic problems even before they get infected. The statistics Palmer gave about overweight, metabolically unwell kids having a much higher risk of developing bipolar is jarring. It happened to one of our relatives who was quite heavy in childhood and early adolescence.

I strongly believe that the bi-products of anti-nutrients (binding of minerals and turning them into stones) play a bigger role in these diseases. According to Sally Norton Oxalic acid is the biggest offender. I remember when I went to the ER for eating something i shouldn't have (a veggie or fruit or both can't remember). The PA or who ever it was told me my blood sugars were too high. It didn't make sense as I've never been diabetic. I felt like i had food stuck in my am esophagus causing a constant ingestion of what ever i ate without digestion. I was tired and felt like my esophagus was swollen.

I agree with you. Sad that the keto community (including Dr Eric Berg) promotes eating high oxalate foods. Also, docs that promote fiber don't know that those on keto and carnivore feed gut bacteria directly with the ketones in the bloodstream - no fiber needed.
I loaded up on spinach, almond biscuits, almond butter when I went on keto. I have been slowly dumping the oxalates for the last few months on ketovore WOE (way of eating). No pain, no depression....

I have a brother who needs to see this, but his "social workers" have brained washed him so much that he thinks he's so sick and can't do anything so he can live off of gov't money. He used to be one of the most determined hard workers, now he's the laziest and wants to blame everyone for his incapabilities. And no one can talk to him because of this, so we have lost connection with him.
The officials want to keep sick people thinking that they are dependant on them.

Great interview, Dr Palmer is a pleasure to listen to and I love his enthusiasm of how it all fits together. I have tried for years to get family and friends to understand how so many conditions tie back to diet through metabolic dysregulation with varying results. The one thing that I can pretty consistently get them to do is supplement with NAC (I have to supply it though) and almost everyone of them that has taken it for a few weeks has reported back improvements in things like mental clarity and mood as well as many physical benefits. My 89 year old Mother in law loves it because she can grow long strong finger nails for the first time in her life. My wife and I have noticed more important improvements in her but if she is happy because of finger nails then so are we. I mention NAC only because I think it is a great tool to have in the toolkit and it can be a gateway into helping people understand the role of diet in many conditions. Most people will become more curious of the topic after experiencing just a little bit of relief and they are so used to taking pills that its not usually a problem persuading them to give it a go.

This has some really good information. Ty to both.
I would, however, like to mention that “mental health “ is a term I hate. It indirectly implies that it’s not a physical problem, when, point of fact, as Dr. Palmer points out, it’s the brain’s metabolism gone awry. I prefer the term “brain health” because it clearly and accurately identifies the issue… just like gut health, heart health, liver health, etc.
Also, Stephanie Seneff, Ph.D. is a magnificent researcher and advocate for autistic people. She has great insight into the Shikamate pathway (and more) that is impaired by glyphosate that may likely be a big factor in autism. I’m not 100% certain about this, but the connection here might be that ruminates break down glyphosate (I have read, but ???)… yet another missing piece, and if that’s true, it might well-explain the statistics Dr. Palmer mentioned in plant-based moms giving birth to autistic children vs. Omni/carnivore moms having a lower incidence of autistic children.
Lastly, for years I have told other people that I wholeheartedly believe that many of the miscreants we have roaming the streets and imposing harm are the result of “things” (I refuse to refer to these things as “food”) like multi-colored cereal, fake fruit juice, glow-in-the-dark cheese curls, soda, chips edged with suberization, and French fries tainted by rancid cooking oils, etc, etc, etc. How can anyone think that glow-in-the dark cheese curls are safe to eat?!?!!!!! … how about the fruit juices that are colors that don’t even occur in Nature? Yikes! Most people think I’m a nut. Perhaps. But, I’d bet my last dollar that just like Dr. Chaffee mentioned in this vid, if you gave kids just one egg/day you’d see improvements in several parameters. But, alas! Government knows best.😮😮 Eat more Tutti-frutti cereal.🙃

@Antony Chaffee MD Is there any possibility long term use (20 years) of an antibiotic called oxytetracycline affect anxiety / mental state?

    • @anthonychaffeemd
      @anthonychaffeemd  Год назад +8

That is an excellent question, unfortunately I don't know the answer. These sorts of things do have side effects, don't know if they can cause altered mental state. However you have to balance it with what it's doing and what it's causing. If you don't think it's something that is necessary for you, then talk to your doctor about options. However if it's helping you in some significant ways then you should look at that as a positive thing that it's helping you with, and then try to optimize your life otherwise to keep things as good as they can be. Good luck with it.

Let me first say that this is so fascinating and a rabbit hole I’m extremely excited to be going down. What role do things like increased hormone injections and less than ideal diets for most of animals today have on either the carnivore or keto diets? Most people don’t have the money to spend on grass fed, non-hormonally charged animals so considering carbohydrates and processed meats are far less expensive to fill a plate with, what effects are to be expected if the diet now features far more hormonally charged and less naturally fed animals?

Hi dr chaffe. I’ve looked intoo dr palmer’s videos on the ketogenic diet. I wanting to try out keto diet princaples but in carnivore style. So how do one eat carnivore but still stay in high ketosis like the keto diet? Thinking maby carnivore can kick you out of ketosis due to high protein or not enough fats? So how can one reap palmers keto mental ketosis but by carnivore and stay in ketosis?

    • @terilward59

there's plenty of animal fats in the carnivore diet! actually the brain is made of fat and animal fats are the best to restore health to your brain! you will actually still be considered keto!
