I was prescribed the gamut of antidepressants over the course of several years, and they swung me into a state of manic depression. The new diagnosis came with a whole new slew of drugs and side effects. What hell! I was told I'd have to take the pills for the rest of my life, but I always knew there was an underlying cause of the anxiety and depression, and I was determined to root it out. I always said the bipolar disorder felt like an energetic thing, not a mood thing (with low/high energy came the low/high mood). And then in 2018, I came across both a quiz for autism spectrum disorder, and video in which Mikhaila Peterson mentioned her mood improving on a zero carb diet. These two crumbs of information sent me down a path that has made sense of my entire life. Turns out my mom is autistic, too. And my niece just received a diagnosis. As I cut foods down to keto, I found out that peanuts and dairy set my brain on fire...like pms on steroids. I'd been eating that stuff all my life. Been off all meds for a decade, and since eating only meat for the past 5 years, I feel sane and grounded, and have an inner peace I've never known. I spent 25 years seeking help, doing my best not to kill myself, and not one person ever mentioned diet. I am so grateful to have lived long enough to figure out what the hell is wrong with me. Turns out nothing at all! There was simply something wrong with what I was putting inside me! Hallelujah!

      Wow! That's so powerful.
It's amazing you figured it out and found your unique path to healing.
I can relate to the antidepressant induced bipolar disorder.
Similarly I went through a 13 year nightmare where I was swinging from the Chandeliers.
As a Psych Nurse I was terrified to get on "mood stabilizers" and "Neuroleptics" and own the bipolar disorder diagnosis.
It just felt like a prison sentence.
The stigma too, in my mind I could hear the ridicule "Here comes the crazy nurse." I felt really isolated.
Needless to say, what saved me was the keto diet too - I also cut out gluten and dairy. I use to have horrible pms and now I feel hormonally balanced.
      Hallelujah is right!
Thank you for your courage, curiosity, persistence, and for sharing your story.

      Bless your heart.
Thank you for your efforts to raise awareness and create change.
But of course it is difficult to change a system.
I started my nursing career in acute care.
Oh my, it was eye opening. It is one place that so heavily leaned towards the biomedical model.
I think implementing metabolic therapies would make so much sense, even if it is to help patients tolerate the impact of those powerful medications.
I remember, it was so shocking to hear the effects of those meds on patients.
It's well known fact that so many psychiatric medications cause metabolic harm and we need to do everything to mitigate that risk.
It would be the most compassionate and ethical thing to do.
People need all the help they can get and why not address their physical health concerns while we tend to their mental health?
      We are integrated whole.
Our bodies and brains are connected last I checked.

Thank u for this podcast! I was a severely bipolar gal for the better part of my life until 2 yrs ago... at 64 I put my bipolar into remission thx to high doses of Omega 3s and Magnesium, along with a mainly-carnivore diet. Within 2 mos. after drastically changing my lifestyle, I was in remission, and except for the times I weened off my psych meds, I have held to a pretty normal quality of life. Last year I switched to keto so I could incorporate more foods into my diet and have maintained a bipolar free existence. What a wonderful podcast! I love how Dr. Palmer is so down-to-earth and very human, admitting how he was worried he would lose his reputation and worse when he revealed what was going on in his study of ketogenics for severe mental illness.
You can bet I pre-ordered “Brain Energy”! 😊
I’ve been living with bipolar one disorder for 15 years. I’ve been stable for a decade. And while I’m still in the early days of practicing a vegan ketogenic diet, I’m doing my keto research. I invested in a blood & glucose testing kit which costs less than visits to the coffee shops with my girls! I feel confident utilizing this extraordinary treatment in addition to my lithium and the MAOI tranylcypromine which have been life-changing since 2013.
It helps to explain to skeptics about how powerful ketogenic diets have been for many people with epilepsy over the past century! As we get results of the current clinical trials being done on ketogenics and bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, that will only add weight to my explanation. And honestly, I don’t need to focus on what skeptics say because it’s obvious there’s a sea change happening in Metabolic Psychiatry & it’s extremely exciting and positive!

It take a lot of courage to do so.
Those "analytical" folks are going to shred this to pieces.
But I like Palmer's strategy - stick to the science and beat them with their own measuring stick. lol
No I'm actually not advocating any physical violence. lol
Although, sometimes it crosses my mind.
The frustration is real when you have to witness daily the immense suffering people are going through.

Can't wait to dig into the science! I'm very interested in non insulin resistant glucose metabolism deficiency, because it isn't simply that everyone with mental illness is insulin resistant. Most seem to be, but Ketosis is doing something deeper than just improving brain insulin resistance.
If IR is causitive though, as it seems to be, then it is imperitive for our physical and mental health to improve IR, afaik keto is the best diet to do so. We need to get serious about this.
It's an interesting thought experiment though to improve insulin resistance with a whole food based diet but without producing high ketones, I wonder if 50-60% might not improve to the point of illness remission, but not sufficient for everyone who have other non IR related brain energy problems

Important to make the distinction between central nervous system insulin resistance and peripheral insulin resistance which can be independent of each other. And I agree it's important to point out that many things can lead to impaired glucose metabolism, TBI, hypoxia etc.

The people we work with have seen incredible improvements in blood sugar levels, metabolic markers AND reversal of existing mental health issues including clinical depression, substance abuse, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and eating disorders.

Having a loved one w bp1, this info gives me great hope. I read Dr. Palmer’s book & it explains the science behind the theory. But framing serious mental illness as a metabolic disorder helps put things in perspective: things that impact metabolism: sleep, diet, exposure to sunlight & darkness, having purpose & meaning, having sustaining & meaningful relationships, abstaining from alcohol & mind altering substances & of course appropriate medicines that help quell symptoms that cannot be controlled otherwise. Bipolar is a treatable illness. Looking forward to Dr. Campbell’s results of his research on the impact of metabolic ketogenic diet with bipolar participants. Thank you for this information. Truly an amazing podcast. I love the spirit of hopefulness here. Dr. Palmer is my new hero, and I find myself devouring his work! I'm curious to know if the severity of the diagnosis is proportional to the severity of the mitochondrial/metabolic dysfunction. In other words, if someone has severe schizophrenia, does that mean he/she is more metabolically compromised than someone diagnosed with mild depression? Or, does the severity of the diagnosis correlate with the region of the brain which is metabolically struggling?

As I was listening to the end of this incredible episode, it occurred to me that we need to have at least a few thousand more of Dr. Palmer, Dr. Campbell, and Dr. Sethi to advance this movement. However, there’s a famous Margaret Mead quote which I’ll paraphrase since I’m working out right now. She writes about the power of a small group of people to create enormous change. We don’t just need the visionaries but we need the every day people to come together and demand that this metabolic treatment be incorporated into our world. Big Pharma is extremely powerful, more powerful than most people realize. Forget about the conspiracy theories theories. It’s true. And as Dr. Palmer noted, or more like implied, that’s going to be a formidable roadblock.
It all comes back to the power of a small group of people who can create a massive change. As Dr. Palmer mentioned it happened with the AIDS virus and it can happen again now. You can bet I’m part of that grassroots movement.

Yes, you are Dyane. It was your interview that made me the switch from vegan to ketovegan this year. All the keto gurus insist someow that "you need your meat because we evolved tis way". That may be even true, but I would need a damn good reason to break my covenant with Gaia. And since vegan keto worked for you, why shouldn't it work for me? And it's a scientific experiment(and that means fun to me!).
I disagree with Margaret Mead here: It was the love of a mother to her son that brought us this change!! I also disagree that we should demand to have metabolic treatment incorporated anywhere.
From who do you want to demand it?
      From Big Pharma/IG Farben?
From the medical community that is full of narcissts?
Or from their SS aka psychiatry that uptil recently did lobotomies and forced sterilization? It's not only psychiatry: cardiology and oncology are horrible as well!!
People need education(and btw, your book is not freely available on libgen!!!).
And we need more knowledge and understanding. Like how IF with low carb compares to keto-modified atkins. And a list of biomarkers that need to be tracked. It's funny that in neighbouring Poland I can go simply to a laboratory and give them my blood sample and tell what to check for. Just like that, without any doctor, formalities or any other BS. That's not possible in the country where IG Farben originated: you need to ask your doctor. Because only someone from the higher cast is permitted to take on some resposibility for your body. That's sick!!!!!
The hydra must be cut down, or at least tempered a bit.
There is something terribly wrong in a system where for someone without medical insurance it's trivially to get some dirty brown heroin on the streets but impossible to get thyroid medication. WTF?
Some psychiatrists should step down from their positions and say "sorry, i can't work anymore for this evil organization"".
People should be able to make dietary interventions by themselves. Without this mafia.
And have their blood checked for whatever they want to.
And have some stupid narcisst doctor get replaced by an app and a reddit channel!!!! These gangsters are useless :):):)

I want this to work for me so badly but don't you think since I've had this for DECADES it's too late? These guys you helped are young and had much later onset so haven't gone through nearly as many intense episodes as I have. Because my psychiatrist told me something about "kindling" and it getting worse with each episode and since I didn't take that advice and have cycled on and off medication and had many terrible episodes. So don't you think that ruins things. I'm trying it again anyway. Thanks for the reminder about the electrolytes.

@MJ You could say the same exact thing about me that you described about yourself. I’m 52 and I’ve been through pretty much the worst you can imagine with bipolar one disorder with treatment-resistant bipolar depression.
And I was told by several psychiatrists about the kindling effect. I’ve taken over 30 meds, I’ve had probably 40 ECT treatments (lifesaving But it’s not something I exactly wanted to do!) and over 10 psych ward hospitalizations and as I wrote in my previous comment that it’s early days in terms of incorporating a vegan ketogenic diet into my life, I’ve noticed profound results! I’m not going off my meds - I don’t feel the need to do that, At least not for the immediate future and that’s totally fine. I hope with all my heart you give it a try and research all you can research, and read Dr. Palmer’s book! While my psychiatrist is amazing and I give him 100% credit for saving my life by adding a MAOI to my lithium that lifted my treatment- resistant bipolar depression in three days, he was not familiar with the ketogenic diet. So you need to do this on your own, If that makes sense; in other words you can’t look to your psychiatrist to necessarily support you in this. It is your life.Be strong. You can do it!

Thanks for writing back, MJ! Let me ask you one question, and please forgive me if it comes across as lame in any way; I just want the best for you.
When you did the keto diet, was it under supervision with a medical professional skilled in using ketogenic diets specifically for bipolar disorder, i.e. in which you closely monitored your ketones etc. as well as medication. It sounds like that did not occur.
If not, I would consider working with a professional - Dr. Palmer could recommend one. I know, for me, the cost of consulting someone would be a huge prohibiting factor & my health insurance is a joke, but is there ANY way you could swing it???? I am rooting for you to get better!!!!
