Dyane Harwood graduated with a degree in English and American Literature from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She has been a freelance writer for over two decades.
In 2007, after her second baby was born, Dyane was diagnosed with postpartum bipolar one disorder. Two years later, Dyane founded the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, and she facilitated free support groups for women with mood disorders for seven years.
Dyane’s memoir Birth of a New Brain - Healing from Postpartum Bipolar Disorder is the first book to cover this form of bipolar disorder. Kay Redfield Jamison, author of the bestselling book An Unquiet Mind, endorsed Dyane's book and called it "a gripping account of the awful juxtaposition of childbirth and the onset of bipolar illness. Her book is an informative and important contribution to our understanding of this triggering of mental illness that happens more often than is generally recognized.”

I lost someone to bipolar disorder. He didn’t get the help he needed. If I could tell him anything today it would be that we love him and would have helped had we known. I wish we had known

Dear Molly, my heart goes out to you for such an enormous loss. I've lost someone I cared about, and it's something one never forgets. I wish both of these people could've gotten the help they needed and deserved. My hope is that this podcast and research will help more people so they never have to go through such agony. Thank you so much for taking time to comment.🤗💕

Really inspirational channel. Only found out about this work in progress a week or so ago by looking on youtube for any help with bi-polar. My daughter is currently in hospital under a section and is slowly coming out of a psychotic episode. This illness takes everything away from you as all will know who’s gone/going through it. Other than thanking you for this work you’re doing I am writing also for advice on the Keto diet mainly the best way to start. I’m wanting to start on the diet firstly as I’ve suffered with depression as long as can remember and then when the time is right I will be able to help my daughter. I know she will have to have help from experts in this field and would appreciate if anyone can recommend who to contact. My daughter is 26yrs old.
    Thanks again.

Hi, thanks for your message! I definitely recommend checking out Georgia Ede's clinician directory: www.diagnosisdiet.com/directory for metabolic psychiatry clinicians in your area who can help. So important to work closely with a psychiatrist when doing this. Wishing you and your daughter health and peace of mind.

Truly loved this episode. While I'm not bipolar, I have been a vegetarian for almost thirty years and, due to food intolerances, practically vegan for several of those years. Keto was life-changing for me at a time when I was suffering a host of health challenges. Listening to Ms. Harwood talk about her experience with keto makes me feel like I might want to give it another try. I found her so relatable and informed and loved every minute of this episode. After reading her wonderful book, "Birth of a New Brain", I knew I would!

What an outstanding discussion about Keto and Bipolar Disorder. I love how authentic Dyane is sharing her story, and how she discusses what has worked for her including her choice of food and supplements. I am so inspired! It is beyond obvious to me that FOOD IS OUR MEDICINE and I love hearing how much better Dyane feels by following the ketogenic diet. Not only has she dropped the extra weight we have a tendency to put on during middle age, but she clearly has found a way to get her energy and exuberance back in her daily life which is so meaningful and wonderful, especially because she spend so much time over the years with doctors trying to find the way to feel good again in her body and mind. To me, it appears, a ketogenic diet is a way to have more energy, feel better in your body, shed excess weight and even combat depression as well as bipolar disorder. This is nothing short of a miracle and it comes from our food and how we eat. I would like to add that eating organic is the way to go! Stay away from GMO's as they cause inflammation and holes in our intestines and lead to a plethora of diseases. Thanks for this wonderful podcast and I look forward to learning more about the ketogenic diet so I can bring more balance and health into my own life. 🤩🌟

Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment! Yes, food is medicine. The Lithuanian-American holistic health practitioner Ann Wigmore said, "The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison." (I loved her incredible autobiography "Why Suffer" in which she wrote about her grandmother heal sick people in war-torn Central Europe. I bet you'd love it too!)
Also, I replied to this comment a couple days ago, but my comment mysteriously disappeared! I wrote about the importance of eating organic, the "Dirty Dozen", my connection with the Organic Farming Research Foundation, and much more.
I wholeheartedly agree with you that it's essential to avoid GM0's. I encourage you to learn more about the amazing power of the ketogenic diet. Thanks again for watching this podcast. I wish you health and happiness!

Dyane, thank you for sharing your story. I’ve been vegan for 16 or so years now. I do not have any diagnosed mental concerns. Hearing your relationship to your diet and mental health was very enlightening. I have seen the mental clarity in myself without a diagnosis. I was intrigued to hear how much it’s helped you daily with rest and mental peace. The entire episode I often kept thinking how grateful I am to have people like you share their experiences to help others experiencing things similar. Thank you for being a part of this existence. @kristendee8424 You hit the nail on the head: it's so important to realize there are other people who live with mental illness. I used to feel very isolated in terms of having bipolar disorder.
Sometimes when I've mentioned I have bipolar disorder to people, I've seen them recoil. That awful scenario motivates me to continue to raise mental health awareness. At the end of the day, we're all connected and the less shame about bipolar, the better. Thanks so much for your awesome comment!💓

Dyane, I greatly admire you for sharing your personal experience with mental illness through this podcast and your book, which I'm sure will help many. This video really hit home for me, due to the fact that my dad had bi-polar disorder. He was also a Vietnam Vet with PTSD and it was incredibly difficult to watch him suffer. I just replied to the previous comment and my response touches on holistic health; what I wrote may be of interest to you too - here it is!
"Yes, food is medicine. The Lithuanian-American holistic health practitioner Ann Wigmore said, "The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison." I loved her incredible autobiography "Why Suffer" in which she wrote about her grandmother healing sick people in war-torn Central Europe. I bet you'd love it too!"

Thank you beautiful Dyane! I will most certainly look into it. I agree, food is medicine and have been brought up understanding the correlation between food and health. I was fortunate to have had a mom who taught me at a very young age the foundation eating living foods, grown in rich soil as well as using what nature provides us for medicine. With this said, it saddens me deeply knowing how our food system (which I considered poison), had been hijacked over a century ago.@@dyaneharwood2023

Dyane is a incredible and brave person to spread this awareness and share her own experiences with others. Happy to support the vegan and keto path and lifestyle, as well as mental health awareness. The way to a healthy mind, body, and soul is what we give ourselves and nourish our bodies with. I also think herbalism is a way to a healthier addition for supporting mental health.🌞

I've always loved herbalism. In my late 20's, I worked at an amazing non-profit called The College of Botanical Healing Arts. This was one of the first schools in the country that certified essential oil practitioners. The studetns underwent a rigorous 400-hour-long program. I learned about the power of herbs as well as the e.o.'s, and I completely agree they are a way to support one's mental health in profound, powerful ways.

Can you please do an episode about travel triggers-I know there’s research about which mood symptoms are triggered in which directions…
A compilation of lesser known symptoms (eg hypergraphia) would be awesome too.
Re music, when I did TMS for depression, anxiety, and PTSD, they had me listen to upbeat music during treatment sessions and a few times it triggered brief hypomania. I’ve never experienced mania outside of that.

Matt manages this very carefully. It has all become much easier since he went on keto. The sensitivity to circadian function / seasonal rhythm seems to have become normalized, making time changes much easier for him to handle.

Interesting to hear how you rely on exogenous ketones. Do you use a ketometer to guage how your low carb/high fat way of eating impacts your mood to optimize mood stability?

    • @user-yf9rw8do9u
      @user-yf9rw8do9u 10 месяцев назад +1

That's a great question about the blood ketone meter & using it to see how impacts mood! Yes, I do have a meter! I had tried the urine strips, but I wanted a more accurate tool.
I splurged on a Keto-Mojo GK+ Glucose/Ketone Meter about a month into doing vegan keto. I used it to make sure I was at least in the nutritional ketosis zone, (0.5-1.0 blood ketones/millimolar) and I usually was. I noticed my mood was steady for the most part; it was definitely more level than it had been prior to doing vegan keto. I didn't use any app or chart to track mood, which in retrospect would've been helpful and motivating.
When I found out about the bipolar-keto connection, I wanted to reach a higher ketone zone of 3.0--4.0 mm as detailed in this
blurb from my Keto-Mojo GK+ brochure which details these zones better than I can! (There are other excellent resources such as The Charlie Foundation's "Ketogenic Diet Explained" video on their website.)
      KETO-MOJO
"If your primary goal for integrating the ketogenic diet into your life is weight loss, achieving “light nutritional ketosis,” or 0.5 mmol/L-1.0 mmol/L, is a good starting point. From there, aim for “optimal ketosis,” which is when your ketone levels are between 1.0 mmol/L-3.0 mmol/L. People looking to use the ketogenic diet for therapeutic benefits for medical conditions such as epilepsy, cancer, or endocrine and metabolic disorders, are generally directed to aim for much higher ketone levels-specifically in the 3.0 mmol/L -5.0 mmol/L range, or somewhere between. Those who are fasting or eat a much higher fat-to-protein ratio will look to levels in the 3.0 mmol/L-8.0 mmol/L range. But you don’t need to go there. The optimal ketosis range is called “optimal” for a reason, and it’s exactly where you’ll want to be for weight-loss and general health purposes, and you’ll eventually get there if you practice patience and get in the groove of eating a keto diet."
Please let me know if you need more clarification or have other great questions!😃

You don't get to retain the profound insights you have; that's the trade-off.
Sure, you write a lot and stumble upon remarkable ideas that could hallmark you as a "great writer," but articulating these insights is an extremely challenging endeavor, especially cause you don't stop writing.
It necessitates the ability to let go and move forward without becoming attached to anything.
Hearing Dr. Alice Weaver Flaherty, without mincing words, advise her to seek help was quite disheartening.
You would assume someone who penned an entire book on hypergraphia would comprehend that it transcends a "mental disorder" and embodies an actual art form.
The issue lies in the reluctance of many to challenge the status quo.
Every art form has its eccentrics; hypergraphic writing/drawing is no exception.
I have been a hypergraphic writer for years now, and it has brought me more joy than hardship.
I've learned to overlook the negativity and nonsense people often express due to their lack of genuine understanding regarding the matter.
It's predominantly a case of 'looking from the outside in' mouthing stuff they read off the first page of Google or Wikipedia 🙄

While you may see your hypergraphia as an "art form," other people see it as an extreme disruption and disassociation from the things that matter most to them. It seems Dyane desired to be a present mother to her children and the hypergraphia, for her, was not anything she wanted to embrace.

I have a picture that shows me tandem breastfeeding my newborn & my little one as I pound away on my laptop.
I respect others' opinions regarding theirexperiences with hypergraphia, but I would not wish it on ANY mother of a baby & toddler. THANK GOD I bonded with my children during that crucial time despite the urge to write-write-write.
Many postpartum moms do NOT bond with their babies because they are not present due to postpartum mania/hypergraphia/depression/psychosis/suicidal ideation, and they are suffering in unimaginable ways.
My baby and toddler are now 18 and 16. They are compassionate, bright young women. My eldest is researching how to restore our marine life and our oceans due to climate change, while my youngest is a gifted artist who has a passion for nurturing animals.
My vegan ketogenic diet for bipolar has helped me both physically and mentally to face taxing situations --I wish I knew about it in 2007!
I hope many people who live with mental illness will have the opportunity to try a ketogenic diet for mental health because it truly can be life-changing.

I'm glad you were able to bond with your children,I really am. That's a wonderful thing, if you having to stop writing was the only way good... That's a good thing.
What gets me is that whenever someone brings up hypergraphia is how it's ONLY seen as a mental illness.
      I argue against that.
It's never caused me any sorta harm or harm to others.
      I'm a pretty 'normal' person.
      I have a gf
      I have a job
      I workout
      I have a social life.
      I'm not bipolar or depressed
My point is that you can be well-adjusted to life and have something like hypergraphia without it meaning something bad.
We are only taught to look at it like a bad thing, so we will only look at it in a bad way.
Irregardless, I'm still very happy for you being able to find the help that you needed to be able to have a bond with your children:)

Hello! Thanks so much for your comment. I hope you don't mind my sharing what I love to eat on vegan keto. (You'll see a slight emphasis on chocolate! 😊)
Last fall I met with Denise Potter of Advanced Ketogenic Therapies. Denise is one of the top ketogenic nutritionists in the country, and she was awesome. I thought she'd judge the meals I eat, but she thought they were fine as long as I got enough calories. We also agreed that I'd slowly work towards a whopping 7 tablespoons of MCT oil a day, but it must be done very, very slowly to avoid any stomach upset. I love MCT oil, so that's fine with me.
Breakfast every day is a smoothie with 2 cups almond milk, 2 tsp soaked organic black chia seeds,
2 tbs. organic C8 MCT oil (I like Bulletproof Brain Octane) + a cup of coffee and 3 tablespoons of 0-carb NutPod creamer. I eat an additonal tablespoon of the MCT after the smoothie.I know processed food isn't ideal, but I'm not, ahem, perfect, LOL!
Lunch is just a snack due to my hunger level usually being low - such as a vegan keto bar like Hungry Buddha. My goal is to make my own low carb vegan bars. I also drink a lot of water throughout the day. I take lithium for bipolar and it's good to be hydrated..not too much water, of course, but I use a water app and try my best..
I make sure to take a high quality electrolyte supplement every day. I like Codeage Keto Electrolytes, but it's pricey. Codeage's breakdown is:
Calcium (as Calcium Carbonate) 99 mg 8%
Magnesium (as Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate) 200 mg 48%
Potassium (as Potassium Chloride) 100 mg 2%
      Sodium Chloride 350 mg
Dinner: 4 cups raw spinach, sounds odd, I know, but I love it!!! Hunger is the best sauce. Then I either have a Beyond Burger cooked in olive oil, a kosher dill, & a side of olives, + The Pepper Plant Sauce (no carbs & this stuff is so damn good), OR I make a a dish of vegan spicy tofu (it's a Carb Manager recipe you can find online)OR a Just Egg scramble cooked in Melt Butter, a side of olives, 1/2 an avocado, and with green Tabasco sauce on top - see how weird I am? Not to mention processed? But it makes me happy & satisfied.
Dessert: I eat a mixture of 4 tablespoons almond butter, 2 tablespoons C8 MCT oil, a scoop of Sun Warrior vegan chocolate protein powder, a tablespoon of Second Nature Keto Nut Mix, and a tablespoon of organic cacao nibs. This concoction is super-delicious. Then I eat an addl. 2 tbs. of the MCT after this dessert - if I have it before food, I get a bit of a stomach ache sometimes.
      Sorry this is so long!
      Take good care,
      Dyane

Seems a bit hyperthymic. I'd be weening off the antidepressant and doing low dose lithium if the depression has lifted. I've come to see most "treatment resistant depression" in bipolar as dysphoric mania or rapid cycling that just looks kinda like depression because you stay suicidal.

@@dyaneharwood2023 thank you for taking the trouble to respond. It's really very rude and presumptuous of me to give an opinion, and I'm sure you are far more sensitive to all the small mood and energy shifts. I just get really passionate about people knowing about all the subtle forms mania can take.
I have not yet read any books on ketogenic or metabolic treatments for bipolar. I've been trying to help my wife who lives with type 1 bipolar and has been rapid cycling for about the last three years. She's also developed severe PMDD, or what is more likely PME, possibly as a result of metabolic and endocrine adaptation resulting from long term use of life saving lamotrigine. We think her body has learnt to alter hormone levels to compensate over time, it's a problem with VPA but no one's seen it happen with lamotrigine.
I learnt early on that the mainstream descriptions of bipolar are pragmatic oversimplifications. I got clued onto the subtleties of the disorder by Dr. Nassir Ghaemi. He helped design the lamotrigine studies for FDA approval and has become something of a whistleblower on the tactics used by pharma to guarantee approval and suppress negative studies.
There is also a doctor Jayashri Kulkarni whose work on estrogen and progesterone in schizophrenia and bipolar is brilliant and of interest to anyone who wants to hear from mainstream voices saying heretical things.
I got clued up that mania is a wide spectrum and its management requires a subtle and intricate understanding of its various disguises.
I got interested in this keto thing when I heard Dr. Ghaemi say that Kraepelin believed the root cause was metabolic. I haven't read Kraepelin, but apparently his meticulous descriptions of mania, melancholia and psychosis are the best ever written to date.
I'm a bit of a believer in lithium. I think the trick is knowing how to dose it. Most clinicians have no idea, and everyone focuses on Schou's recommendations for acute mania that result in zombification during maintenance. I've started taking low dose lithium myself and I think it's criminally overlooked.

Hello and thanks for your comment!
In February, 2023, Neuroscience News reported that "a comprehensive study of the connection between making music and mental health, led by the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, revealed that musically active people have, on average, a marginally higher genetic risk for depression and bipolar disorder."
I tried posting the study link here, but it won't go through; but you can easily find the study online. While it's a "marginally higher" risk in this one study, the results support my statement from a scientific stance. There may be other studies, or ones that are underway about the hypothesis that many musicians have bipolar compared to the general population.
