Perception is huge when it comes to diet. I wouldn’t have believed it until my husband was faced with a health issue. My solution would have been to go Whole Foods plant based with an emphasis on fresh greens, he thought that’s the way we had been eating and blames the diet for his cancer. I do the grocery shopping and most all of the meal prep and I was kicking myself for always going to the old standbys; pizza, nachos, beyond burgers, breaded garden chicken sandwiches, etc. We had also been eating lots of impossible breakfast sandwiches, processed vegan cheeses, crackers and tortillas made from refined grains, a fair amount of foods made with cane sugar. I stayed vegan, but he had started eating eggs and dairy cheese. We have a large family and have people over for dinner often plus we have two teenager in the house so I would cave and stock up on simple, quick foods instead of healthy foods. We did have fresh juices, smoothies and salads. But not a day went by in which he did not have some sort of refined grains or sugar. But he swears he tried the whole food plant based diet and it failed him…I would not have believed it if it wasn’t happening to me…I still can hardly believe that’s what he truly thinks….an enigma. I’m sure several study participants follow the dietary guidelines and now I’m equally as sure that many do not follow them, but think they do. He’s smart in many ways, but didn’t understand how the macro percentages were based on caloric value, not volume. I have since switched to a WFPB diet and am starting to see many positive changes. Thank you for the relevant and informative discussion!

@jennycurtis4447 cutting off your nose to spite your face. Eat whole foods and limit added sugar and salt. Keto diets can be healthy if it gets you to lose weight, but is very very easy to be done poorly. Health outcomes if you don't do it right are fatal in the mid-long term so I would never personally recommend it when it's so much easier to attempt adding more whole vegetables and fruits, miss the mark, and still have benefits.

All my life food as been an issue, a huge one. I started dieting in my teens and continued all my life. Did most fad diets. I’ve turned 60 this year. I went plant based whole food in 2015, I weighed close to 200 pounds and lost about 35 pounds. I fell off the wagon mostly at work where im fed. So I still did the yo-yo because of the very restrictive approach I tried to loose the fat gained at work and still did the yo-yo…
I have watch this specific podcast about 50 times since it was posted. Christopher Gardner’s message and studies are fascinating. His approach is so different and he seems to think outside the box in the parameters of his studies.
It just makes sense! Its simple advise.
    Whole foods (not processed)
It’s basically a low calorie density diet.
And it makes me think of what Dr McDougall says about all animals having a specific diet to thrive on.
There is a bunch of geese resting in the park I’m sitting at now and none of the geese are obese they all look pretty much the same and they eat very simple unprocessed food!!!
Intermittent fasting, macros, food restrictions, miracle substance and vitamins I’m so fed up of being obsessed with food in an unhealthy way… There has to be a simpler way to get leaner and healthier without being consume by the whole thing.🙄why is it so hard!

I have consumed countless hours of nutrition and health related content via professional interviews on podcasts/RUclips as well as books and studies and this has been one of the best interviews I've come across. You two just about covered the whole gamut. The only thing that was left out on this interview is the benefits of organic or regeneratively raised versus conventional with regards to nutritional content and the damaging effects on our microbiome and the environment. Thank you for a great interview I can share with friends and family that will cover a great deal of information and supports what I've been telling them the last few years. Hopefully one of these days I will no longer be the crazy one and people will realize I've honestly been trying to help them improve their health!

I think this is the most honest and straight forward interview about nutrition I've heard in awhile. The experiment where they had people read the diet book and then studied what people actually did was brillante in it's simplicity. I appreciate Dr Gardners spirit of curiosity, this is real science.
When speaking about tiers, I was wondering why they said to eat vegetables but not starchy ones. Whats wrong with starchy vegetables? And then, I would think that not eating refined grains was one of the first steps, and the 5th level would be soaking, sprouting, and fermenting foods.
Anyway, very good interview, thank you.

What I always miss when it comes to the question of protein consumption is the potential risk of promoting the growth of cancer cells. As that risk is so real and becomes bigger with age I would be happy to have more information on how to balance the risk with the need. (Dr. Valter Longo votes for a rather low protein intake due to his cancer research.)
As a post menopausal woman I have been able to build considerable muscle mass consuming ~ 60g of protein per day (~ 1g/kg body weight), it just took almost 2 years because I had to go easy on my joints. I hope that my balance is okay, also in the future.

@@downtownjb100 I had not heard about Klotho - thank you for the interesting hint! As far as I understand its effect fits into the line of Longo‘s research of the IGF1-growth hormone cycle, meaning that low IGF1 (due to a lower intake of protein) down regulates growth. The „membrane protein“ Klotho is a hormone that represses intracellular signals of insulin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF1). Inhibiting this insulin signaling pathway is one of the evolutionarily conserved mechanisms for suppressing aging.

10 years could be quite different than 1 year health effects. 10 years of Paleo (52% fat) got me to high BP (140/90) towards the end of the period (TC >220). 18 months of WFPBSOS got me off BP pills and 105-110/70-75 (TC 190-200, sadly not huge effect). So it takes time. And getting rid of junk is not enough as an advice. Adherence is not a problem when health is on the line. If you plan to live to be 40-45 max you can eat whatever does not make you sick or kills you in a day or two. When you are young you can think ethical. They seem like the boring primary answers with nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, reducing our toxic load - but these really are what creates lifelong wellness. We will ALWAYS be better off having these types of habits/lifestyle shifts and what I've found from my nearly 50 years of living and experimenting with nutrition and diets is that there will never be a one-size-fits all. I think looking at new research, experimenting with ourselves and becoming more intuitive with what we eat is helpful, but also it's not healthy to be obsessive about it.

Love the format of upcoming updates to TR 🎉 thank you.
Also, love the green and red days feature. Have been trying to work this out myself using resting HR and HRV, will this data be used for this feature to make it more accurate? If so, that would be great!
Love love love the charts to see how I compare to other women my age, gives me so much more confidence.
And love the feature to remove needing to put training for an event!
I’ve taken up running again and so it would be great to see this incorporated into the red/green days feature and other activities eg walking and other sports that pull through into the TR calendar, although I do appreciate that TR is for cycling.
Thank you for making TR even better ❤

Are you eating exclusively or predominantly only fruit? If you are, you may be lean not only because you have lost fat, but also muscle. Fruit is low in protein, so you are probably getting only about half the amino acids you need to maintain your muscle tone. I hope you’ll consider gradually adding vegetables, legumes, grains, and nuts into your diet. Best wishes! 😊

I've had bariatric 4 yrs ago. 100+ lbs gone. I physically can't eat much. Protein numbers can be challenging, so I've incorperated Muscle Milk 50g protein to my diet. Cardio, strength and weight training are a big part of life. I'm using 2#, 3#, 5#, 7# & 10# weights. At 64 yrs im feeling better than I have in years. Enjoyed this podcast.

    Very enlightening conversation. Thanks.
My premise is that if veganism didn't focus on outdated data on climate( doesn't take into acoount regenerative vs petroleum input agriculture, which causes equal or worse damage) and would solely focus instead on health benefits of plant and fungus, more people would be convinced.
I went whole food plant based and got all of my blood markers in check, random pains went away, athletic performance went through the roof, etc.
I contend that if people are willing to have bariatric surgery instead of eating healthy, wouldn't it be better to feed by gastrostomy( that is reversible) while teaching what foods to resume eating after it?
Once people realize the seriousness of the procedure, they might be more willing to stick to a whole food plant based diet; they already got to a point that they know that their health depends on it.
Ps. I of course eat beans;every day( hummus, black beans, lentils); they are a superfood. And you get satiety with calories that you don't absorb( they feed the microbiome and go to the toilet bowl with your excess cholesterol and toxins). What's better than that?
