I have Bipolar One, for starters. My episodes of manic psychosis have both a prodromal phase, and an an ictal phase. Manic psychosis is treated and prevented with anti-seizure medication. If manic psychosis were to be recognized as the species of epilepsy that it is, that would end the stigma. Would you please verify that I am correct?

    Great interview! Thx.
My wife had schizophrenia, treated only by drugs, for over 35 years. She lived constantly with delusions. Over 15 different drugs were used to treat her over those years. The "side-effects" were horrible as anyone knows whose been on these medications. Her weight was unmanageable. She was a walking zombie. Terrible gut issues. Couldn't read or concentrate. And so on.
By God's help, we stumbled across a video on RUclips of Dr Palmer being interviewed by Dr Brett Sher. Well after seeing that we did a lot more research and decided to cut out the junk food and high sugar and just eat whole non-starchy foods. The results were dramatic. After 6-8 weeks she no longer had any delusions. And there were many other improvements.
It's been 7 months, her psychiatrist has reduced her medication by 3/4. He has been over the moon watching her changes. He could not be happier. She has lost 13 kg (26lbs). No one sold us anything. It was just changing what we ate, from highly processed foods to whole foods like our grandparents ate.

Hey Lauren, it would be nice if you could do an interview with someone who's used this intervention and ideally their psychiatrist too, as a primer for people to share with their practitioners. I'm sure anyone who hears about the intervention would get excited, but of course there's going to be skepticism especially when the biggest advocate has a book to sell! If it works, it needs to be propagated responsibly and quickly, and additional voices would definitely help with that!

@@sebastian_thiel oh no I really enjoyed the book, i think dr palmer is an excellent advocate and that he's doing the right thing by publishing a mass audience book to get these ideas out there. I was pointing out that there is a portion of people who will immediately be skeptical of ANYONE who happens to have published on a health intervention, because there are a lot of quacks and snake oil salesmen out there doing that. And for people with mental health problems, their family and supporters are often very cautious and protective!

Oats do horrible things to people too. They dry them by spraying them with RoundUp (weed killer). In most of the world, the legal limit for contamination with glyphosate (RoundUp) is 100-150 ppm (parts per million) depending on the country. Here in the USA, it is 15,000 ppm!!!! Avoid oats like the plague!

I love Dr. Palmer and wish there were many more doctors like him. It's amazing that most doctors and psychiatrists have not heard of this metabolic therapy for mental illness. My loved one was inpatient at McLean Hospital, where Dr. Palmer is affiliated with, and even the doctors there had not heard of this. Every doctor that we have dealt with thinks this is anecdotal and are dismissive. How is it that they have spent years in med school yet don't believe in science? How is it that non-medically trained people know more than doctors? Why are they in this field if they don't truly want to help and heal people?

Hopefully dr palmer's research will help a lot of people. There's likely multiple etiologies of schizophrenia (more than one cause) but clearly his area of research can "cure" at least some people who are suffering, just based on all the research I was familiar with before hearing about him. Really unfortunate that more investigation hadn't occurred since the first case reports back in the 1800s, but then again, antipsychotics saw steady improvements over the years so they were seen as an eventual permanent solution. More research, more interventions, more is better!

The fats that you eat do not necessarily equal fat that you keep on your body. And restricting fats will have a neuropsychological impact. Fats (Omega 3s, mono saturated, polyunsaturated) lower stress responses and are linked as neurotransmitters. This metabolic response is absolutely necessary for Schizophrenics.
Anyone following the regular diet will eventually balance out. I believe and could be incorrect that the doctor is thinking with his misogynist Freud and not his biochemistry. There is a small chance for stored fat on the body to supply this kind of neurological impact for people suffering psychosis, ADHD and schizophrenia.
Dr. Hoffer prescribed eating nuts and especially walnuts. He favoured these for two reasons 1. High Omega 3 and 2. They were at the time the cheapest nuts. Hoffer always maintained that the best vitamins were the cheapest ones. The reason being that they were available to the entire population and that therefore likely to be taken more readily.

My gp helped me come off my mood stabiliser lamictal with medical keto levels above 2mmol over a year from 200mg lamictal to 0mg without issue. I was also able to lower my qutiapine from 150mg to 75mg after a year on the diet. Before a year it was not possible to lower the qutiapine as I couldn’t sleep and would begin to go manic very quickly. I have had seasonal depression winter and hypomania spring as I always do but the depression was not as bad no hospitalisation and the hypomania treated with increased qutiapine for a week then decreased over the next week. Usually I have multiple hypomania and depression episodes a year an Atleast 2 manic episodes with psychotic features but over these past two years I haven’t had a depressed episode that lead to suicidal ideation or attempt or hospitalisation and I’ve had no manic episodes for two years on this diet. I still take lexepro 10mg and qutiapine 75mg but since the start of the diet I’m a lot better and I’ve halved the qutiapine from 150 to 75 and completely come off lamictal 200mg. This diet is difficult for me as I started out underweight already and struggled to keep weight on during the diet and coping with the amount of fat I had to eat to keep weight on. My doctor and I used the epilepsy studies for children coming off lamictal for epilepsy with the medical ketogenic diet which was important as the children on lamictal rather than other anti epileptic drugs had lower levels of ketones in response to the same diet (during hospitalisation clinical trial) than the other children on sodium valproate and other anti epileptics. My doctor and I decided to try the diet to replicate the effects of the lamictal as had already been done and well studied in children with epilepsy not as a cure for bipolar but to see wether the high levels of ketones could replicate the effects of anti epileptic medications in those with bipolar as it had been found to have done in children with epilepsy. The mechanism of action of these anti epileptics that are used as mood stabilisers in bipolar is not yet known for epilepsy nor bipolar so the diet being able to replicate the effects of the medication in epilepsy was worth a try for bipolar too as as far as we know the mechanism of action in the brain that treats seizures is also the same mechanism that treats bipolar of course it may not be because we don’t know what the medication does to help epilepsy or bipolar we just know that it does help and we have a bunch of theory’s that may or may not be correct so things that work to reduce symptoms in epilepsy may help bipolar just as we have found that the medications including lithium treat both epilepsy and bipolar as do other mood stabilisers/anti epileptic drugs. It’s important to get your gp to check your electrolytes and general health as you progress into this diet and sleep is difficult for many on this diet also. Don’t lose heart if your levels of ketones are low they will raise as your medication is lowered if you cannot get into ketosis chances are you are consuming to much protein and your body is still desperately trying to live off carbs by converting that protein to glucose and storing fat. The most difficult part of the medical ketogenic diet is not actually the reduction in carbs it’s the extremely limited amount of protein you can eat when you already can’t have carbs. As you come off the medications you will find that you can have much more protein but on mood stabilisers and antipsychotics the metabolic effects of these drugs seem to use all protein to keep you out of ketosis. A low protein diet is a difficult one with real health side effects so please talk to your doctor about that. Chances are the low protein phase of the diet is only temporary as you begin to decrease your medication. If you are on a particular medication that you wish to reduce and it is a mood stabiliser or an antipsychotic you may find studies of people usually children on and off these medications being put into ketosis and the effects of that particular medication on the ketogenic diet. Antidepressants should not effect the ketogenic diet to a large extent but antipsychotics in particular and also mood stabilisers/anti epileptics can have an effect there is good information out there about this from epilepsy trials as the cross over of bipolar and schizophrenia medications in childhood epilepsy is quite similar. Good luck and I’ve found that approaching the doctor with the idea of the diet replicating the effects of the medication you are on is a good way to get the doctor on board because there are many many studies from epilepsy that show the diet can replicate the effects of medication on the brain and in theory this could be helpful in bipolar and schizophrenia too or is Atleast worth a try to see if one of your medications can be lowered. The doctor cannot really argue that these medications work differently in epilepsy as we actually don’t know exactly how they work in epilepsy or mental illness so you won’t actually know if this diet works like medication in you or not. In saying that tho I have found the ketogenic diet at medical ketone levels has similar effects on me as the medication does with fatigue and brain fog and lowered mood and motivation just as my medication does so it’s not for everyone and it has side effects of it’s own it’s not a miracle cure without side effects the calming effects in the brain seem to be similar to that of antipsychotics that block dopamine and can make you tired and apathetic and unmotivated and the diet may need tweaking to help with this the diet seems to be dose dependant also and reducing your level of ketosis can help this and also upping your protein. Unfortunately the diet is not all it’s cracked up to be in terms of amazing energy and a clear head and great sleep and mood the diet itself takes a toll on the body and it’s nessesary to play around with the levels of ketones just as one might change the doses of medication to get the right balance of good effects vs side effects. Ketosis is a potent treatment and no potent brain treatment comes without its own brain symptoms so please see how you feel and weigh up what is important to you and what is a fair trade that best gives you quality of life. Also the diet can cause psychosis depression mania and anxiety in the early stages despite no changes to medication please look up the case reports of people trying this diet for bipolar and schizophrenia as it can seriously destabilise people at first and there are reports and quality case studies on this extra medication may be needed at first while you start the diet please inform yourself and talk to your health care provider about the early stages and how you will manage if you react badly at the beginning and don’t give up there’s many success stories despite the first effects when people start. The Charlie foundation is a fantastic resource for all things medical keto and the movie do no harm is a great intro to the diet being used when medication side effects are unbearable. The child in the movie is on anti epileptic drugs and antipsychotics and it’s a true story you will hear the medications listed in the movie and may even hear your own. The boy Charlie in the movie is real and his parents started the Charlie foundation that educates people about the benefits of keto not only for epilepsy but also for mental health and lists keto experts in your area that you can contact for support and links to studies to show the doctor.

very important part of the diet is that you exercise. if you eat a little bit too much of carbs, going on even a small 3 mile run will burn off the excess glucose. and no one can convince me that it's bad for sport performance, at least for us that do it recreationally. I've ran some crazy long distance runs while being in ketosis. my tip is that lettuce salad is so good if you put tuna cans with oil directly in the bowl and mix it and add olives, feta etc. there's ketogenic diet and there's healthy ketogenic diet. sour cabbage is very low in carbs and has a whole lot of vitamin C. with some pork sausages you get a very very low carb ketogenic dish, that's very traditional (for those of european ancestry), just without the potatoes. pecan nuts, brazil nuts, nuts in general are healthy even for those not doing the diet. when you watch TV you can snack on olives. if you miss fruit, buy a whole lot of fruit tea blends, that have negligible carbs and will give you that mango, peach, whatever taste, in summer you can make them iced.
    Super tasty keto recipe:
    - saute two small chopped onions in about 3 tablespoons of olive oil
    - meanwhile beat 6 eggs with ana little salt
    - pour boiling water into a big pot full of about 500g of fresh spinach with a little salt and let it wilt a bit
    - pour spinach through the strainer and squeeze as much water out as you can
    - put it on the wooden desk where you chopped onions and cut it just a little in lines
    - in a plastic bowl crumble about one packet of 200g of feta cheese
    - mix the feta, onions with oil, spinach, beaten eggs, a little olive oil and MCT oil in the plastic bowl
    - and put it in the oiled glass (I can't remember what it's called) and put itin oven at 190 degrees C
    - and bake for about 45 minutes

dont be afraid to start by yourself. look into dirty keto. its keto but easy. like go to fast food places, your usual meals, but take out the bread. order hamburger patties, cheese and pickles/garnish. or a tacobell taco bowl with extra meat and no rice or beans. theres also keto torillas, for keto quesadillas, and keto hamburger hotdog buns, so you can put your patties on them. watch out for hotdog carbs though. try and stay around 20-40 carbs and day and youll be good. look into subtracting net carbs and fiber so you know how many carbs the tortillas really have.

For decades, I was diagnosed with depression. The diagnosis came after high school because of a suicide attempt. And suicidal ideation became a normal part of my life. But looking back, I suspect that depressive symptoms were already developing in my childhood.
After trying numerous treatments, I had resigned myself to a fate of lifelong depression. Then I began experimenting with low-carb diets to lose weight.
An unexpected side effect was my depression entirely disappeared. And it's never come back since. I have no interest whatsoever to go back to my old high-carb diet and sugar addiction. In general, I feel great.

It takes some discipline, which is particularly difficult when dealing with mental health issues. If people are currently taking medication, they could perhaps lower the medication, but continue it until there is some symptom reduction.
