I was low carb for several years and that helped depression, but when I went strict keto and got into constant ketosis, bipolar, OCD, anxiety, rumination vastly improved. Off all meds, eliminated caffeine & alcohol, sleeping better, exercising regularly and feeling better than ever.

Explain how in the world is it possible that keto stopped your ocd,bi polar, rumination? Like how does that even make sense esp when our brains run on glucose

I have started the ketovore diet 6 months ago to stop seizures and am starting on MCT oil to see if that will also help. I So far it has not stopped the seizures but I am feeling better. I had to stop alcohol , caffeine fruit & veg too. I have had so much hair loss which has been hard to handle, not sure what I am going to do about that. I dont know if stopping all vegetables was the right thing to do. I have been following Dr Berry, Dr Chaffee & just finished Dr Palmers book. So glad this has helped you

@@LifeIsWonderful675 If you're having hair loss, try adding some fatty fish like salmon. Fatty fish is really good for hair! Also coconut oil has always helped mine, you can add it to foods and even mix it into a keto smoothie, or (what I did) was just eat a tablespoon every day, because my hair absolutely LOVED it.
Hair is protein, so a keto diet provides that, but hair also needs healthy oils in our diet to thrive.

Do you eat vegetables & fruit on keto? I have been trying to sort the ketovore diet to stop the two seizures I have around the same time monthly. They were started after a brain injury in 2004, I was started on medication which I stopped in 2012 as it had s/e & were not working. They have not stopped so I started MCT oil about 5 days ago & will see what happens. I have started 2 spoons a day, but may up to 3 from tmorro after reading a bit about it the last few days.

@LifeIsWonderful675 I often eat vegetables. I rarely eat fruit because if I want dessert, I enjoy dark chocolate more 😋. I used the KetoMojo monitor daily to assess my blood sugar and ketones. Luckily, I I've learned to use 'how I feel' after eating to guide my nutrition. I don't have to do the finger stick so often anymore.

I will have to see if I can have a little dark choc for a treat at some stage. It is so good to know so many people are getting off meds something our Drs have never helped. We have had had to find all this out ourselves many years later.

Just 3 weeks of keto made my depression vanish. Clearned up my blood tests. I had fatty liver, high triglycerides, and i was overweight. After a month on keto it was all nornal levels and i had dropped 25 lbs. I live with bipolar disorder and during that time my mind was so clear. I had never felt that way my whole life. I am trying to get back on the diet now for mental health purposes because it really helped me get through the semester of school i was it. I zoomed through it. Normally i drop out because of mental health issues.

Over the course of 9 months I've been weaned off my antipsychotics (Geodon and Cymbalta) with the guidance of a reluctant psychiatrist, and with support from my therapst, but I had to figure out the nutritional stuff for myself.

Same with me I started researching Keto after believing it for 19 years to be for children only to stop seizures. I decided to try it as Drs were trying to get me back onto meds after a fall I had in June 2022 after stopping meds in 2012. I could not believe what I have found & the wonderful Drs who are supporting it. It has been difficult to know whether or not to stop vegetables & fruit like some believe, which I eventually did 6 months ago. It has not stopped the seizures as yet but I am feeling better as I stopped alcohol, carbs & sugar in June 22 and have slowly been trying to work the diet out over the last 6 months. I am now trying to work out which Dr on the net I am going to contact for a consultation.

I have no mental illness diagnosis but find this topic fascinating. I know on low-carb, my brain-fog simply disappears, and my mood evens out, and I can handle stress better.
I was on low-carb for decades then an ignorant M. D. talked me into abandoning it for low-fat. I immediately gained 60 lbs over about two years and yet this M. D. insisted I was simply "taking in too many calories," when, in fact, I'd consumed twice as many calories on low-carb.
I've finally returned to low-carb and intend to eat this way forevermore, because my body and mind function so much better on this way of eating.

8 weeks into strict keto (daily blood ketones around 2.6 mmol). Doing it for anxiety/depression/ocd/fatigue/depersonization/ASD/severe adult onset motor/vocal tics. Hasn't improved anything yet infact tics are worse. Been unable to leave the house or drive the past 3 years due to illness. I noticed an energy/mania surge the first week and low sleep which disappeared after 10 days. Only benefit for me so far is I'm not always hungry whereas before the diet going a long time without food was impossible. Despite effectively only eating grass fed beef/green veg/onions/garlic/eggs/almond/some nuts my gut is still just as terrible as when I was on a heavy sugar diet. Hopefully it works soon as I haven't even noticed a 5% improvement. Here's hoping a switch flicks overnight between now and 3 months. Only 34 years old, didn't even have a single tic until age 18 now I have around 2000 jerks/shouts a day. Very jealous of the lady who reversed her schizophrenia after 2 weeks on keto at age 70. Tbh the anxiety improved after going pure whole foods last year ( was still high sugar) everything else is unfortunately still very severe. Hard to believe cutting out all grains/sugar/chocolate/lollies/ice cream/chocolate milk etc has done zilch. I heard of all the various miracles of cutting out sugar for 30 days from various functional medicine podcasters... not for me lol, I've been sugar free for 5 months! If no improvement soon I'm going to adopt Will Bulisewicz's diet or follow the supergut protocol as my gut diversity has become far lower since keto according to my microbiome metagenomics tests. I'd give up the diet today but I've read too many testimonies from keto/carnivore, but not sure if most of these people are really mentally ill or self diagnosing themselves (ie just have social anxiety/introversion). I've noticed 95% of these anecdotes from reddit/youtube are from people who can still hold jobs and their main complaint is not being able to order anything at a restaurant. For example that Peterson apparently had bedridden arthritis but somehow was still able to get married twice. Then there's the homestead show guy who claims he could'nt leave his shed (essentially what I'm like everyday), searched his channel and pre carnivore he's building clotheslines and heaps of other things. I think they're overstating their conditions.

To Dr Palmer`s comment on people saying "nobody can do a ketogenic diet" (17:55), I`d like to respond that I`ve been doing a keto diet since 2007. It wasn`t easy in the beginning, but I felt it`s benefits, and with time learned a lot about it. I think this is going to be very hard because Big Pharma makes billions of $ on anti-psychotic and other mental illness medication. They will not want to give this up. I can see them funding "experts" to try and discredit this non-med intervention, and doctors who will lose out on their monetary perks will go along with them.

Used for epilepsy in early 20th century but never really utilised by mainstream medicine that favoured drugs that mostly do not work. I wonder how many lives could have been saved and lived better if doctors were not so closed minded. Even now most don't value it. But then it took them 20 years to acknowledge the research into stomach ulcers. Maybe in 20 years it will be an acknowledged treatment for mental illness - but I doubt it. No money to be made by keeping people well.

I started having 2 seizures a year after a head injury in 2004 and after stopping meds for the 1st time in 2007, because of the s/effects I then unfortunately had to start them again because they had turned into approximately 2 a month. I was never told about anything but drugs by the Neurologists I have seen and diet has never been mentioned. It is criminal really as it has destroyed my life as I had to stop driving in 2012 after stopping meds for the 2nd time as they were doing nothing, if anything they made them worse. I have been trying Ketovore for 6 months which has not stopped the seizures as yet, but friends say they are not as bad. I never knew I had one. I decided to start MCT 2-3 times a day. It is good to start with healthy whole food low carb diet and slowly if needed move to keto diet, the difference is just cutting the carbs more , by then you might not need to add more fat when your body has adapted to burning fat for fuel! There is lots of learning! Eventually your food menu will be very simple and a few good healthy ingredients, when eating one or two meals a day and you want to include all good nutrition, you have less choice which make your job easier!!! Lots of great advice and insight here. I feel pretty demoralized though, it's true that you need the whole care team aligned, but I cant even find one clinician willing to work with my 14 yo ASD, bipolar and learning disabled son. I have tried on my own but I don't have any support in the family either because they don't see it as an evidence-based approach. My son doesn't want to do it because other than me, no one else in his world thinks this is a good idea. My son did one week of carnivore and was in ketosis pretty quickly and had no violence, depression or suicidal ideation for one blissful week, but he hit a wall or anger and refusal when his Psych, who wasn't on board for the intervention, prescribed a new stimulant med. I couldn't convince my son or anyone else in the family to try again- they saw it as a fluke and the diet was deemed too restrictive. Sorry, just venting. I keep watching this space to see if case studies and programs are coalescing around ketosis for kids with bipolar. I feel like we are so close to cracking this nut but Im just a mom, I need a team...

So happy to find this channel after reading brain energy; I’ve been inspired to do the Keto diet myself, I’ve been watching through the videos and I have a couple of questions,
Is is necessary to switch to Keto diet for life or would a say a 6 month-2 year (no idea what’s appropriate) range be effective for ensuring the mit. Biogenesis and brain healing occurs?
Second question, and this is more thinking second order effect related. If this treatment plan gains in popularity, which from Brain Energy’s logic and evidence I believe it will, and millions more people start this diet, especially considering the mental health epidemic, there will be significantly increased demand for meat and dairy
how can we square that with the need for a planetary shift towards a plant-dominated diet to reduce the impact of the meat industry?
No easy answers, I’m sure but I’d be curious to hear from the community on both questions
Thanks all, and good luck on your journeys!

It's good, cause it's recovery focussed. You need to add some excercise where gains can be measured. I do body-building which is massively recovery focussed. Can't get manic, or it will kill your gains, got to eat right, or it will kill your gains. To get to perfect metabolic function I did have to increase all fats and decrease carbohydrate, change out hyper processed foods for whole foods. I certainly didn't have to do keto. Eating before you get hungry is huge, your meal choices are proper, bingeing and shit food aren't even a thought.

I haven't given up smoking, and have been smoking for 45 years, yet my metabolic health is perfect. I know I should, maybe when gains become difficult. The effect muscle and strength has on metabolic health is huge. Current studies seems to show it has more of impact than not smoking. Maybe stop mentioning smoking, as there are reasons mentally ill people smoke, and once other parameters are met, smoking can be ceased. Focus more on muscle/strength gains

@@fionen yeah tobacco is a mild anti depressant. Work similar to caffeine, which I should probably quit too. I think the stimulant effect of either is what's bad for the heart. They found with the Inuit that have fires in their igloos, that inhaled equivalent smoke to 50 cigarettes a day, never had problems with heart disease had poor lung health though. Stuff like coffee does have some health benefit, tobacco does increase testosterone, but the benefit of testosterone is increased protein synthesis, but that is negated by poorer protein synthesis caused from tobacco. Addiction to either isn't exactly good for the mind. I think alcohol is worse, and I have that regulated now, only had a drink at new years in the past 12 months. At least with caffeine you can have a couple of coffees in the morning and the caffeine is depleted by night time. With smoking it doesn't seem possible to have a couple of morning smokes only, and have the nicotine depleted by night time.

My neurologist is treating me for a seizure disorder, increasing my meds AND at the same time encouraging me to have occasional sweets, alcohol and carbs when I'm trying to stick to a keto diet. There are real obstacles to establishing a relationship with a professional to monitor the effects of an altered dietary regimen. How do people who lack the funds to find that expert counseling get themselves to a better place? This is the reason why many viewers of this video may (out of desperation) elect to undertake this keto intervention on their own. We live in an imperfect world, one that lacks an optimal path to an informed and remedial intervention with medical supervision. But it helps that interested people make a commitment and have the willpower to stick to it.

So my son lives on the streets for various reasons related to mental illness. He is drug free but may occasionally use alcohol and smokes a lot. I am considering not giving he money for food but rather giving him foods and supplements that can be easily carried about in a back pack and that will transition him to Keto. Perhaps that way his symptoms will get better and he may become cooperative in getting better help. Suggested foods and drink mixes ? There is a lot that calls itself Keto that is actually not so Keto.

Thank you for your comment. That is a really good point and tough to conclusively answer. Most experts recommend as close to a whole foods keto diet as possible, but that is obviously challenging without reliable kitchen access. We empathize with your challenge. There are some sites that rate various keto products. We don't know a whole lot about these sites and don't necessarily endorse them, but here are a couple (and you can check google for more) hip2keto.com/category/product-review/ and keto-mojo.com/keto-lifestyle/product-reviews/

People born in the late 90s and early 2000s are the children of parents who grew up with the government's dietary guidelines (aka Food Pyrmamid from 1977). These parents are largely unhealthy, metabolically speaking. So, could they have genetically passed their metabolic dysfunction to their kids? If so, would that explain why young people are being diagnosed with metabolic disorders (including brain disorders) at such an alarming rate? It seems unlikely that metabolically-compromised youth could have developed their dysfunction based on their own diet and lifestyle (because we know that it often takes decades for people to develop metabolic disorders). Metabolic Mind, you are so generous to respond to comments and provide insights. Is there any insight you can provide regarding this topic? Thanks!

Read Dr. Robert Lustig's book, "Metabolical", and view his recent videos with Emery Pharma, for information regarding the role of ultra processed food, and specifically fructose, on the epidemic of metabolic and psychiatric illness in society, and of fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes being seen in children and teens. As a pediatric endocrinologist and researcher, he has shown that just removing all added sugar from the diet for a few weeks (without removing other carbs, & without causing weight loss) was sufficient to significantly reduce visceral fat/fatty liver in teens in a clinical trial.
