  • Today’s featured guest is Georgia Ede, M.D., a Harvard-trained nutritional psychiatrist.
“The things that you can do to improve your brain health have very little to do with adding special things to the diet. They really have to do with subtracting things from the diet that are working against your brain in the first place," she says. In this episode, Georgia and Jason discuss sneaky foods that rob your brain of energy, plus:
00:00 The biggest misconceptions about brain foods
04:19 What to remove from your diet for brain health
06:06 How linoleic acid affects your brain
10:51 The link between keto & mental health
16:02 How to balance medication & lifestyle methods
20:47 How to know if a keto diet will work for you
23:31 How glucose spikes affect your brain
25:41 Georgia’s hot take on the Mediterranean diet
29:57 What you need to know about red wine
32:12 Top foods to add for a brain healthy diet
34:49 Why meat is not the enemy
39:45 How anti-nutrients sabotage brain health
    44:10 Food combining mistakes
49:03 The items you should never put in your smoothie

You don't need to drink alcohol to be social. Also, if you're drinking when social that could be every night for some people. I'm Italian and we had wine on the table occasionally when growing up but as an adult I liked it too much. I could see it was becoming a habit so I quit. My mom was an alcoholic from wine but quit. My grandmother drink too much wine in the evening. I've spent time in Italy and they share a bottle among many people at dinner. It's not a lot but in America we over do things. This socializing idea of drinking being fine is an excuse to drink. It's not necessary to have alcohol to be social.

27:32 When he said he " views alcohol almost like a Trojan horse for a social setting", speaking about how the Mediterranean is often equated with consuming wine in a social gathering , I was hoping he'd say the trojan horse is thinking you always have to have wine for such a gathering. It's ubiquitous, almost like you can't be social without it. And sadly, that is true for some people. They've become dependent on wine to feel relaxed, especially in a social setting.

I'm no fan of highly process food and certainly not of foods high in sugars (starches and grains, included) but I am also cautious about saturated fats. Around 35 minutes, in when the doctor says that because we have always eaten meat and atherosclerosis is much more prevalent these days she is telling the truth. But a big reason for this is because people died (and usually much earlier than they do today, thank goodness, because of many other diseases (as a result of the invention of penicillin, vaccinations etc), wars, lack of safety in workplaces, etc. And so people mostly died before long term diseases had a chance to become such a big killer. So for that reason we can't rule out the dangers of eating too much meat. I would have thought this was an obvious point that she should have mentioned.

Suggest checking the study on mental health and diet led by Felice Jacka PhD. Focus is on profound benefits of whole food plant based diet. Some of benefit may come from effects on microbiome. There's also work on exercise and Omega 3s having significant effects on anxiety and depression on her distraction comment, when I started on a plant based diet 10 years ago, I did subtract out junk, removed excess pasta and bread. I eat a lot of dark choc, but what I eat has either no sugar (Cocoa beans and powder) and baking choc) or very low sugar (80% plus) dark choc. I eat berries too. And beans. Lots of beans. When a person talks down beans its a clue that they're full of BS. I look to people like Walter Willet and Gary Fraser and Christopher Gardner on dietary advice/studies. My HbA1c is 5% or lower.
