- Temple University’s Vice-President for Student Affairs, Dr. Theresa Powell, shares her mother’s recipe for sour cream pound cake on an all-new episode of Baker Dave Presents…
Dr. Powell, the ninth sibling of ten, came from a large family, so the substantial cake easily became a staple in her childhood home.
1 cup sour cream
2 sticks butter
3 cups sugar
6 eggs
1 teaspoon lemon flavor
3 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
cream the butter with the sugar, mix in the eggs, sour cream, and lemon flavor. add the flour, baking soda, and salt last. mix to incorporate.
325 degrees for 1 and 1/2 hours in a grease and floured tube pan/bundt pan
Dr. Powell is a sweet spirited person. Lovely lady, and great baker.
As for me, this touched my childhood love of dessert, respect of all cultures, family and Respect. She is so sweet and I would imagine her Mother is so Proud !!
They are. So nice
I made this cake and used 1 tsp Almond extract and 2 tsp Vanilla extract. WONDERFUL flavor, cake is dense and flavorful not too sweet a nice crumb. This is a go to cake and very easy to make. Yahoo another winner in my dessert tool box. Thank you so much for sharing. By the way I used my Kitchenade stand mixer. Worked great. No icing needed. Yummo.
Thank you for your feedback, I'm glad it worked out.
I also added almond extract and vanilla and a dash of mace to the batter
Nobody tells you all of their business. Some times people have carpel tunnel, arthritis, or a pinched nerve. I love that Bakery Dave helped Dr. Powell stir the batter. 🥰
1c butter
1c sour cream
3 c sugar
6 eggs
1t lemon flavoring
3c flour
1/2 t salt
1/4 t baking soda
11/2 hrs 325 degrees
Where is the milk.
Valeda Green I never heard of milk in a sour crime pond cake. The sour cream takes the place of milk.
Thanks for the ingredients.
Valeda Green no milk, lol
Can someone write out his grease recipe because I hate using baking sprays. I love that you put it on with a brush and it worked great on this Bundt pan.
Yeah Dr. Theresa i remember flour and sugar coming in a sack as a child. Nice childhood memories. Keep safe ya'll ❤🙏🏽♥️
She's such a sweetheart, love her.
Me too! Thanks for watching
I loved this video. Our Mother’s were a lot alike. There were 4 siblings and a cousin being raised by my parents. Lol my dad had a sweet tooth which always worked out in our favor. Like yourself, I didn’t do much cooking. The 3 boys did the non traditional chores and the 2 girls did the same. My Mom was hardworking, a great cook, and always fed the neighborhood no matter how long a day she had at work. She taught my Dad who eventually became a great cook. So we were very blessed.
Thank you for watching. I love that this brought back such fond memories. People and Family are the most important aspects, the food is there to bring us together.
Dr. Powell was very sweet and polite. I think her parents did a good job raising them. Zaida - Puerto Rico
I agree! Dr. Powell is an amazing person!
The pan grease recipe as follows:
1 Stick butter
Half cup oil
1cup flour equivalent to 4ozs of each ingredient.i had to watch it again because I just love his idea, it's a great tip and very useful to me as I have only one hand so shaking around flour is difficult nowadays.😅Plus it's never done evenly across the surface. His tip solves this issue.
What I like most about this episode is you don't have to have a KitchenAid, the nostalgic back stories about the recipe, and Baker Dave and Dr. Powell seem to be having a good time. Thanks. 😘❤️
Thank you for watching 🥰
@@BakerDave thank you so much for getting Dr. Powell to share this Southern classic. I followed the instructions precisely and it turned out AMAZING! The cake was so good. Best wishes for the safety of both families represented in this wonderful episode.❤️🏅❤️🏅❤️
@@mw7882 I m so happy that it turned out well for you. Stay safe ❤️
That sour cream pound cake is so good, but the secret to any good cake is not to over bake it.
I didn't like his finger in the lemon paste, he is too controlling
True Facts...I learned my lesson about that
@@marypowell6832 I was thinking the same thing about him using his fingers in the paste. He should've used a spatula.
Great idea to butter and flour the baking bundt pan. Thank you Baker Dave

Baker Dave, thanks for inviting us into your kitchen. Dr. Powell, thanks for sharing your mother's recipe. I love pound cake and this one looks delicious. Your spot on directions, and stories were a welcome addition to my day!!❤
Thanks Dr. Powell, your stories were delightful. I’ve made this cake several times and it always gets many compliments. This cake reminded me of my Gma and her sister making cakes during the holidays. BTW, I always got to lick the spoons. lol. Thanks Baker Dave for having her as a guest.
Shalom and Blessings Baker Dave and Dr. Theresa Powell,
Thank You for this recipe, because I have seen an awful lot of Pound Cakes with Cream cheese, but I remember The Sour Cream Cheese Pound Cake. The Sour Cream Pound Cakes is what My Grandmother would often bake!
Thank You Again!
Shalom and Blessings
Thank you for watching, I am so happy that it brought back such lovely memories 😊
What a lovely woman Dr. Powell appears to be! Usually, I would skip to the recipe but she really held my attention with her family story. Wonderful recipe too!
I’m in love with sour cream pound cake omg 😍😍😍
Me too! Thanks for watching
One of the best cakes I've ever made. What a great recipe! and Baker Dave... that mixture to coat the pan with is unreal. Cake slipped right out. Amazing job you two and all the best. Looking forward to your upcoming segments.
Thank you for watching 🥰
I remember when my grandparents bought flour in 10lb sacks as well as sugar.
Couldnt believe he wouldnt let her use a mixer in case folks at home don't have a cheap mixer. I'm quite sure he has a fancy mixer in that restaurant. Pound cake batter is super thick and a blender would certainly make it simplier. I'm quite sure there are spoons and spare spatulas there too so you dont have to use your hands! She was so cordial and never returned his rudeness. Way to go doctor! I'm going to try your recipe.
She's very sweet😊 She needs her own cooking channel! Her voice and personality is divine😊🎉🎊🎉🎊
I agree! Thanks for watching
Love this sour cream pound cake, and thanks for the story.
Thank you, I am glad that you enjoyed it!
could listen to her stories all day long,,,,,,
Thank you for watching
Love this lady!
She's amazing! Thanks for watching 😊
Baking has been always scary for me especially when using those mixers, her recipe looks easy, I'll give it a try.
such a lovely lady....ty for your great memories and recipe...honestly it was difficult to watch but Dr. Powell you made it bearable...thanks again...
Get morning world! Good afternoon world! Good evening world! I have to tell you all this is one of the best pound cakes I have ever made. Everybody liked it. Everybody said it was moist. It lasted a few days, and it was still a moist. It's like a spell was cast on this cake.
I am going to make it for Father's Dat
It look good and she remembers me of my mother who enjoy cooking and baking too... Family of 8 children
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video
I enjoyed her pleasant attitude and the ease with explaining the way she was taught to make the sour cream pound cake. He was, to say the least, rude.
The woman was on crutches for Pete's sake! He made the decision to make it "old school" so he did the heavy lifting (or stirring). Give the man a break! She was a lovely guest and he was a gracious host.
Barbara Keith He kept taking things out of her hands. And talking about how he does things it was supposed to be about Her experience. Rude dave
The problem was not that he helped her, the problem I witnessed him taking the spoon out of her hand without asking first. May I help you please. Yes she did ask him to help her mix some ingredients. Ask first don’t take.
He was NOT rude. Obviously, you do not know what rude is.
That is my opinion. I wasn’t speaking for anyone else. Y’all got your own mind, roll with it.
I tried the receipe! Thank you Dr. Powell and Baker Dave!! Absolutely fantastic!! I have used it over and over!!
Thank you! For the kind words.enjoy
Glad to see that the cake came out well, I made one tonight for my Thanksgiving table. Thank you Dr. Powell and Baker Dave.
You are very welcome. Enjoy

Most cooks are messy. He used his hands to swipe out the lemon. Anyway she is trained to be polite with slow students. He knows everything, but the purpose of her being there was to share her moms cake.
I love the tip for making the butter and flour solution to grease the pan!!!
I so love the Texas accent I could listen all day and night. I love to hear Laura Bush ❤️ speak too she sounds like her so much. I will watch again just to listen to her speaking with Baker Dave 😂 thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe I have a birthday next month and I will be making the sour cream pound cake.
I am glad that you enjoyed the show. The cake is delicious, and Dr. Powell is an
Amazing woman!
Great show and I am definitely going to use the tip for prepping the pans.
Thank you!
@Southeastern777 thank you for the constructive criticism. The truth is this is the second show that we filmed, over 6 years ago. I hope that I have become a better listener through the years. I encourage you to check out some of the newer episodes, and I welcome your feedback.
Nice tutorial ! Delicious pound cake !
Thank you!
I’m from Austin! Blue Bell ice cream is the truth!!
I never baked my sour cream pound cake for that long. I bake mines for 1 hour and 15 minutes and let it sit for 10 minutes then flip it out
Thank you for watching. I love the science in baking. It is amazing how seemingly similar cakes bake so differently. Happy Baking!
Happened upon this site. I love the interaction (spelling?). Will visit your other videos.
Thank you! We love having you stop by.
This lady is on a crutch, he's helping her.
Thank you! He is helping her! A lot of hyper-sensitivity (perhaps) ??
I like my cake plain also perhaps a glaze now and then and thanks for the recipe and quick tips I will try this one soon thanks
Thank you, for your positive comments.
Great video, thx! Let the man do the work, Doc.
Thanks for watching
My grandpa called pound cake “plain cake” he didn’t like frosting on cake. He said the plain cake was just right!
Thank you for watching. I too like "plain" cake!
I’m not a fan of frosting, either. I was probably the only kid that scraped the insides out of Oreos.
@@carblarson8868 No, your not. I hate frosted cakes.
Looks delicious, love the stories💕💕
Thank you!
Please, keep your lifeless comments to yourself just go to another site. It is sad you have to say all if that about a cake recipe. Obviously you can't do a simple task with out complaining. Life is to short for someone to waste time like that. I made the cake and it turned out wonderful. Keep up the good work ma'ma.
Thank you, I am glad the cake turned out well for you.
BAKERS PASTE........... I LIKE THE IDEAL
Good old pound cake.my mother_law use to make with the same ingredient.
NOTE: if ur following this recipe add the sour cream LAST! As per Dr. Powell's instructions. They failed to stress this in the beginning of the video and i didn't do it 8 ((
Yes the written recipe was different from what she was telling him NEEDS to happen. The Sour Cream Comes LAST👍
@@terribabers2521 he was trained to do it his way but she said to add it last.
Excellent point.
I baked this and my roommate loved it!
Thanks for the recipe I just made it it’s in the oven hopefully it will come out looking like you’re
Your welcome. Thanks for watching
Excellent recipe, is our go to cake ♥️♥️♥️♥️
This is fabulous! I will make flour spread and definitely make cake. My first time watching!! October 18, 2021
So he made a version of baker's joy. Nice.
Tanks that is wonderful recipe.
You are very welcome 😊
I love pound cake but I cannot understand why Americans make everything soooo sweet . My recipe is almost the same ingredients but only 2 1/4 cup sugar . 😜🤪👵🏻
I agree totally. I always cut the sugar back.
Thank you for a great cake :)
It’s call a tube pan
I will try it just now!!
I like chief"Dave"he doesn't leave a thing in the dish"make kind of guy👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 😊
No blender? Come on now !, Don’t bring someone on if you’re not prepared! No spoons? Her cane drops and he doesn’t even pick it up for her.......definitely NOT a gentleman! Watched her pick it up. uGH !
I thought I was trippin
Very awkward looking and I didn’t know what to think. It’s dead, genuine kindness, that is, I believe they used to call it ‘gallantry towards women.’
He sucks
Yes, no manners.
I use self rising flour would that be ok?
I like the lady dresses us fashion..
I used to be a model..and designing.
Where is the complete list and quantity of each ingredient??
i love Blue Bell Vanilla ice cream, the cake looks delicious
I like it cannt wait to try it
My Mom use to serve this with Borden cherry vanilla ice cream
Love this recipe Thanks for sharing!! Subbing
Thank you for watching
He did NOT just use his finger to put the flavor in. Nasty
The cake looks delicious! But, I need to see the ingredients a little longer. I have to watch again to get the amount of baking powder.
Dave please help...I've just recently gotten into this baking thing recently...and Im doing pretty well. But I have problem with my pound cake...it gets too dark and crusty on the outside ...so far I've used aluminum and metal and ceramic cake pans. Any suggestions?? P.S. then again, maybe its suppose to be that way idk.
It sounds like maybe your oven temp is a little too high, try turning your oven down, and bake for a little longer. Let me know if that helps. And thanks for watching. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner
@@BakerDave Thank You....will try it.
Dave please help me too (ok if it's next yr reply!) The top crust/crumb almost always separates from the cake! Mom's didn't but over the last 2 decades I can't get it right anymore. (no, she passed)
Baked in the stem pan (that which Dr was talking about) and upon removal from the oven inverted it over this old green wine bottle to cool (it's saved just for it, the thing has to be 50y if it's a day). My top crust separates and makes for a disaster. It's way different than the cake I made and won the state fair (judges ate LUNCH from it)
And so I don't want to make it much. Heartbroken I'm doing something wrong..please help?

12:29 Pan grease
To the idiots whining about Baker Dave using his fingers. I'm sure he washed his hands! If you don't want anyone putting their bare hands in your food you'd better NEVER eat in any restaurant on the planet because when you do go out to eat fingers are going have ALWAYS been in your food.
And yes she was talking about an Angel Food Cake pan aka a "tube pan". Baker Dave seemed rather dense on that topic.
Marty I could shake your hand, no disrespect but the chef is on a time schedule not about family matters, so he was trying to get her to continue and I'm with you I'm sure he washed his hands but any normal person knows that, but how many hands go through your food you never know my mom always said PRAY OVER YOU FOOD .,😁
Your food,sorry...
Thanks.what size of the Bundt cake pan.and please could you give ingredients list in grams. Thanks from London
Im sure both of these people are nice, good people. They are just oil and vinegar. Video starts @ 4:11✌
Sorry to hear that. It started right up for me.
Say yes the
i have never seen a hot cake flip out that easy
actually, the cake was not completely hot. however, I always flip my cakes out hot from the oven. thanks to the pan grease that I use. equal parts shortening, oil, and flour. it's amazing!
Yes I was terrified😂
Can this be made into 2 loaf pans to make 2 cakes? Would the cook times be different?
I enjoyed this.
thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Is it all purpose flour
Is it unsalted butter
Thanks
Preheat oven or no? Friend of mine has recipe that starts with cold oven.
Watching here in JP 😋
Hi I made this cake today
He will take her family recipe and mass produce and make millions, just like Jack Daniel's and KFC has done, they do this as quick as they breathe!
This is a very basic pound cake recipe, very good but nothing out of the ordinary. The recipe is traditional - centuries old - and does not belong to anyone. Over the years, people started experimenting with it and some use buttermilk or yogurt instead of sour cream (none of which are in the original recipe). I use cream cheese (Philadelphia) in mine.
did you use all purpose flour or cake flour? where is the baking powder in this recipe?if vanilla is to be used, should it be used to replace the lemon flavor or in addition to it?
adam smith , we used all purpose flour, also there is no baking powder, only baking soda. Baking powder is baking soda with an acid ( usually cream of tarter ) the sour cream in this instance gives you your acid to help the soda react. Finally feel free to use both vanilla and lemon flavor. Thanks for watching.
adam smith I can do without the powder sugar!
Put some gloves on, Baker Dave.🤦🏽♀️
That is what they did during the depression, making clothing out of flour sacks especially the patterned ones. Totally recycling.
How is this guy rude! Sit down and shut up! Baker Dave!!!! Theresa is referring to an Angel Food Cake Tube Pan!
Right? The kind that has a removable tube and floor of the pan...I remember watching mother cut out a liner for the pan from a paper bag -
he does have a very condescending edge to his tone, bordering on disrespectful and i dont like it. . i ALSO didnt like him adding the lemon paste with his nasty ass FINGER! ugh....now you know her mother is turning over in her grave! she would NEVER have some white mans gross finger in her cake mix!!! Sacrilege.
viewtube6e What a nasty comment!
She sugar a little at a time and he Dumps it😒
It turned out just fine, too.
ashhad 'an la 'iilah 'iilaa allah wa'ashhad 'ana muhamad rasul allah❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️٠
Hes so rude he snatches the spoon from her everytime instead of asking for it and his constant comment about it just more professional is quite snide!
D Lit. U wrote in ur comment, "Everytime". I don't see that Dave should take away the spoon "every time" from this lady but yes she is definitely sweeter than him!
Crispy Rustic Pound Cake ?
Hi, I’ve baked several Pound Cakes in a Bundt pan ~ all have been wonderful. But one was especially good. Somehow the exterior had a bit harder crust ( the inside was still moist.) We liked that one best, but I have no idea how it happened ! 🙂 Please help me recreate that crispy Pound Cake ~ any ideas ?
Tx,
Kevin
I like the paste idea but why the oil? This seems like extra calories for no reason.
Eventhough i got some tips from it all.
Sheila. Corry did not say that. Shirley dixon did not make that comment
Thank You Dr. Powell for sharing the family story and pound cake recipe. It's unfortunate that Dave is unprofessional.
He is Not unprofessional. He's a chef & was very helpful, as she was on a crutch & not able to blend effectively with the spatula. He was THE MIXER, and shared his expert knowledge of baking terminology, moving the process along. The Dr, while sweet voiced, could've been more considerate and less critical of him, allowing him to complete preparing the pan before commenting. I'm old school as well, and PREFER to beat 100 strokes as I was taught by my mom and grandma --- very strong arms. Be BLESSED.
Shirley dixon made the comment
she should do it on her own.....im not sure how to feel about this video.....if she have family start her her own channel
EXACTLY!!!
He's like your typical STRESSED Chef. So i do agree!.. and she is a Gem.
Look - you bakers etc need to learn how to use spatulas to get all the wet/moist ingredients out of the bowl. Dave - you left way too much lemon paste in that bowl...use it all.
Baker Dave, I love your recipes. My Jewish Apple Cake turned out delicious.Soooo moist. I will be making the Sour Cream pound cake. I love the idea of the Bakers paste. Thanks so much. God Bless, keep up the good work.
Sodexo, what happen to the gloves?
He is so rude...this man need to learn matters.. White man cannot stand others cultures knowledge's..she is amazing woman.
I will bake it...
Yes is delicious..this Judad tribe knew about cooking...we are all over the world.
Start a bakery Miss!
Now who's presentation is this? I don't like how he is just taking over her presentation. That is so rude and unprofessional. Why is he over talking and rushing her? She is a sweetie. I don't care for this Baker Dave. He is just to disrespectful! This is not his presentation. Smh
I agree. It's something about his countenance like he seems offended that she is even there.
Texans always say Blue Bell, not ice cream.
Good to know. Thanks Zaida - Puerto Rico
OMG YOUR FINGERS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Terrie Marshall So what? It baked long enough to kill any germs.
He was so rude🤦🏾♀️🙍🏾♀️👎🏾🤷🏾♀️
