    I have been in Kansas City for 40+ years, and my husband was born and raised here. KC historically has a high and even very high crime rate. My husband says it goes way back, even before the prohibition-organized crime era in the 1920s. Near as I can tell from reading the high crime rate goes all the way back to the begining.

    Very interesting and informative. I live in Lee's Summit and have for the past 60 years. Honestly for the past 40 years I won't go into the city. I love the Kansas City library system and a lot of the parks. I love the Waldo area too but again as I have aged the traffic and crime has turned me off. It is a dirty shame because there are terrific things about KC. There has been a ton of crime that has migrated out to Lee's Summit from Kansas City, not to mention all the homeless people that now are here. Being honest the public schools are awful in the city and the bickering and politics being played by the KC Board of Education is downright sad. I take issue with the liberal KCMO democratic government and the mayor of KC was an embarrassment throughout the Superbowl parade shooting. I suppose all big cities have issues these days and play the race card like they breathe. I pray someday we can move beyond race and fix the real reasons for the problems our societies face. Good luck in your business and your family is darling.

    @5:30 Those areas are red because the map shows crimes per capita. Since no one really lives in the areas where the lakes and warehouses are, it only takes a few crimes to raise the crime rate. For example, 1 crime in a neighborhood that only houses 100 people will have the same per capita crime rate as 100 crimes committed in a neighborhood with 10,000 people.

    Hi Jaylenn + Fam,
    Thank you for this raw and honest video, it’s quite insightful. Though it’s a very grim topic it’s so necessary.
    We are a young family of 4 looking to move to KC relatively soon and your videos have been a tremendous help in making our decision.
    I’m wondering why you and your family chose to live where you do given that your wife said she hears gunshots at all hours of the day, she doesn’t feel safe to walk the neighborhood with her friends etc?
    We are looking into moving to Lees Summit and are hoping our reality isn’t what yours seems to be currently.
    Moving away from family and the town you grew up in is such a daunting and scary experience, this video definitely made me question the overall safety of KC.
    We are coming from Eagle Rock Los Angeles and so we are not strangers to homelessness and crime, but we’re trying to get away from that!

    • @LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWong
      @LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWong  4 месяца назад +2

      Alexis, thank you so much for reaching out. I hope your move goes smoothly, I know Eagle Rock well, I used to work in Pasadena and would drive through to head to my deliveries.
      I have no problem answering your question, which is a great one! We certainly chose to live here, and here are the reasons why:
      -We were part of a group that had prayed about starting a church in this area, and the opportunity came where we could buy this house while we were praying. As Christians, we felt like it was a affirmation of our prayers. We also have two other families that attend the same church who live on the same street. We're hopeful that we can be an agent of change in this neighborhood long-term by simply being kind and generous neighbors. We try to gather people from our neighborhood often, and we have found that the majority of the people we meet don't like the crime either. They're hoping for change as well.
      -For my job, I'm very centrally located now! I can be in Lee's Summit in 20 minutes, or Liberty in 20 minutes! It makes my commute easier, as I work all across the metro.
      -All of the things that our kids like doing are at our fingertips! We can easily get to Science City or the Zoo in less than 10 minutes.
      I'm fairly positive that you' won't have the same issues in Lee's Summit. Crime is not as intense there, and the schools are great too!
      When are you moving? I would love to hop on a call with you to see how I can help, if I can at all! No worries if you're not interested, no pressure on my end!
      Hope this was helpful!

    Kansas City Metro area murders are actually lower than many other cities. Chicago and NYC are around 700 / 600 murders in 22 and 23. Kansas City Metro has a population of 2.4 million people. So the 240 murders are low if you factor in the population of other cities. For example, New Orleans has a population of around 1 million people, yet, in 2023 they had 280+ murders. And out of the top 10 cites, New Orleans ranks around 8th. There are many other comparables. Still, violence at any level is bad. I feel safer in Kansas City than Los Angeles and NYC. Another consideration people should make is, does your lifestyle, income and education level align with a greater chance of violence against you? If you have a higher income bracket, education, etc., then this number rapidly drops. Safe neighborhoods are safer for a reason, bad neighborhoods, maybe not so much? Where do you live in the metro area? Chances are, you're probably pretty safe. I conceal carry when I am in Kansas City, and I am never in bad areas of the city. But then again, there is always the much smaller chance of random violence regardless of where you live in the metro area. There are maps available to the public that tracks sexual offenders, violence, murders, etc. and most of that happens in the sames areas of the metro area time and time again. This is a great tool to use to educate yourself and family members.

      Thank you! I know that you're right, but I thought that people would like to know given the reality that Kansas City's crime has been in the forefront of the news cycle. I don't feel unsafe, and according to a list that I found, we live in the 4th worst neighborhood in KCMO. We will still let our kids play in the driveway as long as we supervise them. I'm glad that you mentioned the education level, I think that I should have mentioned that correlation. Where do you spend your time when you come here?

    • @RyanValizan
      @RyanValizan 4 месяца назад +1

      Per capita is the number to really look at. KCMO is in the top 10 for violent crime rates in America. Pretty sure STL is still ranked higher, but definitely not good numbers. I do not believe KCMO is #1, but the per capita rate is worse than Chicago last I saw.

      Yeah, we've been told that before. I hope that we're not coming across as discontent. We certainly aren't and could move back to Gladstone as we still own that property. We moved here to be part of a church plant in Midtown, and we actually really, really love it here. We just don't want people to be surprised without warning of some of the realities of living here. The proximity to the Plaza, Union Station, the Nelson Atkins, Loose Park, and everything else that we love doing is awesome, and we also have three families that go to our church on this street that we see multiple times a day. It's really amazing. However, we know that not everyone sees it that way, and so we want to be honest about it as well.

    I cannot tell a lie - it is BAD. In my neighborhood, deep in the suburbs of south Overland Park, we had every car parked outdoors in my neighborhood broken into one night. I’ve lived in KC for 38 years, downtown for 3. I’ve thought many times about getting a weapon and conceal and carry license, especially after being at the rally with my daughter.
    However, I remind myself a lot that I must fight for the city I want to live in not that I do live in. Which means I don’t want to live in a city where I have to carry a gun to move around, because that means I can’t trust my daughter to freely move around without me. If I die to a gun at least I didn’t pull the trigger and can die with honor knowing I tried creating the place I wanted to live.
    Also helps when in the city to carry yourself differently. Very similar to jail/prison, have purpose in your movements, don’t stare at people, minimize or eliminate eye contact, stay vigilant of your surroundings, and have proper manners. A lot of the gun violence in the city stems from disagreements and people feeling disrespected.
    I also would discourage waiting at a bus stops directly, and instead standing back off of them a bit when possible and using the transit app to time getting to the stop about the time your bus will arrive. Lots of sketchy things go down at bus stops, especially the father east you get in KCMO.
    With that said, I love my city. Moved downtown from the burbs of KS and have no intention of leaving. My daughter and I love living in the city, and she’s in an amazing school called Crossroads Academy. I highly recommend parents in your area try entering the lottery. Enrollment for new students won’t open until Jan 2025 now, but I’ve had kids in a lot of districts in KC and this is by far my favorite school district so far.

      @LivingInKansasCity-JaylennWong  4 месяца назад

      @RyanValizan, thank you for your thoughtful comment. I wanted to take a day or two to think about this before I formulated a reply. I totally understand your thinking in not wanting to carry a gun. I think the reason that this resonated with me was because I had to think deeply about going for our CCW permit for some of the same reasons. Also, as a professing Christian I was torn about what the Bible says about self-defense. I think that a case can be made for not carrying a gun, as it heightens your awareness of potential threats where there may be none. I sometimes don't like the fact that I view people with more wariness.
      I also agree with your comment about dying with honor. I know that there are some situations where I would have no choice but to die, as I cannot control every circumstance.
      I love the area where the Crossroads Academy is located. I think that the house that I toured in Quality Hill was right near there, and it looked like a wonderful area.
      Thanks for commenting on my videos. I hope to meet you someday!
