Hidden Valley: Where the CERNER Complex is, a large shopping center used to sit. Bannister Mall. Real nice. But gangs and crime was its downfall and it was demolished. To the east of it was a Walmart “Hyper-Mart”. Gigantic. Also lots of other stores nearby. And Benjamin Stables for horse-riding. All gone now.

My work is sandwiched between two of these neighborhoods. I work at the Kansas City VA Hospital. While I often can hear gunfire off in the distance, I never truly feel unsafe. Most of the bad stuff happens after my workday ends and I'm back at the house in Blue Springs. Before I started working at the VA, I was a delivery driver for Amazon. A lot of my days were spent making deliveries in what many consider dangerous neighborhoods off of Troost, Prospect, Benton, The Paseo, etc.... never had any issues and never felt like I was in danger. There is good and bad everywhere, even out here in my little suburban town.

Thanks for sharing! I have a client who bought a home in Gladstone and she works at the same hospital I believe! She says she works at the VA as well. She stated that it's not the best area, but not as horrible as it can get. Is there only one VA hospital here?

The gunshots you are hearing are from the Police firing range not far off from where you are. Usually. The firing range is right where Winchester and Coal Mine Rd converge. If you happen to be there at 4:30 in the morning, you'll hear a wonderful array of night waking gunshots. But, I grew up a few blocks from the VA. It's a pretty rough 'hood now days. Some of your listening pleasure may be due to some knucklehead doing something they shouldn't be doing.

3rd generation Kansas City resident. Well, the metro area at least. Interesting that all of these areas lie east of the old red line. My father grew up a block west of the red line. He was very liberal and tried to move us to the east side of the line when I was a small child in the early 80's. We joined the white flight the second time bullets came through our front window at 51st and The Paseo. Eventually Grandview became overran too. So we moved to Lee's Summit. I now reside in Independence. You should do one for the burbs as well. Grandview is a war zone. As is Turner on the Kansas side. Even Independence is now called Meth-dependence. You left out that Kansas City schools are or were unacredited. Not sure of their current status. Only live in the KC school district if you can afford to send your kids to private school. Otherwise, get out into the suburbs. Lee's Summit, Geain Valley, Blue Springs, Pleasant Hill, Liberty, or go to the Kansas side. Blue Valley schools are some of the best in the nation.

Anywhere up north is a drop in the bucket compared to south of the river. Even Wyandotte is worse than the Gladstone/Northland area. But the crime spills over everywhere. If you do some digging you’ll find that anywhere the city bus goes, so does the trouble.

@@shanecarter6421 The area I'm talking about is east of the downtown airport where all the old motels are. Instead of going to the downtown airport you take a right. That area is the worst of KC. It's where the one trans person stabbed another person because they stole her dress. Even the northland has its problems. The Staley area has a drug/prescription drug issue. (newmark) Standoffs and old men shooting kids for going to the wrong house. The little girl who was disabled that was shot with bird shot by a teenager. To answer the original poster I got the stats from when I served on the grand jury for Clay country..

@@johnathansteil8186 I know exactly the area you’re talking about. That’s actually the tip of the Northeast which runs from east of the airport near 3rd st, all the way out to independence avenue and 24 highway. My comment about south of the river was specifically geared towards that area. I’ve lived in the northland and south kc through out my life. I agree that every area in every city has its better and worse spots but comparing any part of north of the river to south of the river is child’s play. The cases you’re talking about are what the local news likes to show for views. They don’t care about the double and triple homicides from black on black crime. I’m referencing a case that happened off of Indiana ave that I responded to during my time as an EMT. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Currently I’m a bus operator for RideKC where I’ve had to utilize my medical training to save 3 people from opiate overdoses, I’ve been physically assaulted by passengers that caused my to have to have surgery on my tailbone and I’ve had to use my belt to tourniquet a man’s arm after he was shot before he boarded the bus. I can tell you for 100% certainty that anywhere the city bus goes, trouble always follows.
