so glad I found this...my kids had my camera..thought it was broke. I guess they switched the above setting..the only way I could take a pic was to hold the button and snap at the same time..I put it back to the top one and so far so good. I did miss my son's first bday thinking the camera was broke..so thank you

This setting is useful for recording films without having an exposure changing constantly due to different light environments. It is just too bad that you have to hold the button.

hey guys, when i use this button to lock exposure or focus, do i just push it once and will it then stay locked until i press shutter, or do i have to hold the button down until i press the shutter?

In my Nikon d5300 I have set AE/AF button to lock both exposure and lock focus. But when I am pressing this Button it's looking only Exposure only and shutter button is working to focus on the subject. Why this button is not working to lock both?

When the subject is moving, you may want to lock the focus on it, so the focus system track the subject keeping it in focus all the time
