  • I clarify what the title "Tears of the Kingdom" actually means. The title of each Zelda game is important, as it generally reveals quite a bit about the gameplay and environment one can expect from that specific game. We explore that idea to its fullest potential in this video!

    What if The kingdom from the title isn't referring to Hyrule, but instead to a different kingdom that is an ally of Hyrule who's crumbling remains dropped like tears from the highest reaches of the heavens or the sacred realm...

      @@hunterbittle356 Good point. But aren't the labyrinths of Zonai origin, just like a lot of the sky island architecture? You're right though that it seems like stuff's moving both ways; Hyrule Castle levitates and it's not Zonai as far as we know, and debris and whatever else falls down. It could be the forces of Ganondorf and malice push up, displacing certain things like the labyrinths and Hyrule Castle in order to make room for his malice fueled machinations, while simultaneously a secret Kingdom that is far, far above anything we've seen so far (maybe Zonai, and probably related to the green hand from trailer 1) push downwards in some sort of attempt to counteract Ganondorf and aid Link in defeating him/his evil.

      @colinhay1666 Год назад

      @@Jabberjai yeah I mean clearly we're in Hyrule for most, possibly all the time. But I mean more that there could be a realm far up in the sky that is a "Kingdom" per say, and has like a capital city, and things are falling from there. Idk obviously I could be totally wrong. It does seems like the "Tears" in the title are a double (triple, quadruple, etc) entendre, and that the title refers to a central, multifaceted theme and set of gameplay elements...

  • @crashp

    I’ve always thought the “tears” in the title meant “rips” or “fractures”, which would explain the broken areas of Hyrule that are floating high in the sky. They “ripped” or “fractured” and rose.

And there isn’t room for puns or retranslations in the original Japanese title.
      While your hypothesis is interesting, in the scheme of things, it actually doesn’t make sense, because the Japanese title can’t possibly play on the wording of the video.
      Plus, less than three days after the title release, Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi confirmed everything I said here, that Nintendo of America into English after a name is decided upon in Japanese.

      If I'm being honest, there should be no way that Demise comes back. The whole point of Hylia's plan in Skyward Sword was to ensure that Demise had no chance of coming back. People seem to misinterpret the scene at the end where Link absorbs Demise's consciousness into the Master Sword. What they fail to realize is that Fi specifically said that Demise's residual consciousness is decaying in the Sword. That's the reason why Impa stayed behind the watch over the sword, to make sure Demise didn't come back. Then, once we return to the present, Impa is still waiting guarding the Master Sword. People also forget that the time travel jump is about 1000 years in the past. 1000 years of time for Demise's consciousness to decay, and that not even including the 10,000 year gap between the Distant Past and Botw time. So it's pretty obvious that there's nothing left of Demise, and the only way I could see him coming back is through the Triforce, and that's if people even remember him in this time. God that was a long ramble.

    The section about "tears" being tears in spacetime and having different realities merging made me think. You talked about how Ganondorf in one reality could have wished on the Triforce for a second copy of himself, which would mean there would need to be a second Zelda and second Hero.
    This made me think, what if sometime after the timeline split in OoT, Ganondorf wished on the Triforce to have the power or to rule ALL of Hyrule? This could be a way for the timelines to converge, with the Triforce merging all different timelines and version of Hyrule, and giving Ganondorf a lot of power, bringing us to BotW, where this cycle with Calamity Ganon appearing every 10,000 years.
    This could explain how BotW Hyrule has aspects of all 3 timelines, as well as mentions by Zelda.

    Looking back on this now, you were definitely overthinking it lol
    I knew there's no way an old Japanese company like Nintendo would make a wordplay in a language they don't speak. The whole concept of "rhyme" as a poetry tool is nonexistent in Japanese in the first place since it only has 6 possible sounds to end a word. Since around Twilight Princess, Nintendo started doing this thing where they would come up with a working title in Japanese first (usually with a certain poetic meaning from a Japanese literature standpoint), then swap word for word into English, and make that the final title. I remember when Twilight Princess was still being developed, it was called "Tasogare no Himegimi" at the time, and when they officially unveiled it, the final title became "Twilight Princess" which is literally just the first title but in English.
    When I first heard the titles "Breath of the Wild" and "Tears of the Kingdom", I thought to myself "Yup. That really sounds Japanese". It's hard to explain it to non-Japanese speakers. If I were to guess, their line of thinking for the reason they do this is because Zelda has always been fascinating for so many people due to its universe incorporating different cultural themes, elements, and ideas from both Eastern (mostly Japanese) and Western worlds, so making a title in Japanese first and then flipping it into English represents such identity of Zelda itself.

    • @wizcatcheslightning
      @wizcatcheslightning  Год назад

      I think you’re misunderstanding the “rhyme” part, as it relates to the story beats, and not the titles of the Zelda games.
      I say this in the video, and it’s said in the pinned comment, but the titles reflect the English language using Hiragana. English language used in Japanese phonetics. Where do the most copies of Zelda games sell? English speaking countries. The titles are in Hiragana for this reason. The latest titles might be poetic, but they’re crafted in such a way that they’re created with the intention of reaching English speaking audiences first before Japanese audiences.

    you didnt point out how zelda's sheikah is different than botw links was, it's more switch like than wii u game pad like, like the one link has, paired with surveys that supposedly ask if people would want to play though a story as zelda AND some promotional stuff saying things like join link AND zelda on another quest to save hyrule, meaning zelda might be playable which i dont 100% believe, but lets just say they did, i think that zelda falling ends not in her death but in traveling through time, my theory is the future, he slate looks more advance, while purah could have made it what if it was from the future, and building off your idea of link being the hand that held ganondorf in place then somewhere along the line link finds a way into the past to confront him, each one in a different tier of time, so in stead of it being a physical echelon its more a time one, stacking past and future with botw being present. the title could be an ouroboros the symbol of infinity meaning that the end of TOTK could be how botw starts, link pinning ganondorf in the past only to have he next version join zelda in the future to finish off demise and ending the curse for good. it could even be a revalation that zelda was the one who made a wish to end the cycle of rebirth of ganondorf and demise learned from the future and that leads to the timelines to converge to end the curse all the variables have to gather. sounds like that would be breaking to much from there mold but it would be the way to end the "Legend of Zelda" not the series but like the whole of the curse of demise ark. they seemed like they wanted to branch out like in the ds games so maybe if they give the original series it's send off it could pave the way to a new era for this mythos, instead of just link, zelda, ganondorf they could play with the idea of other parts of the triforce holding the evil, a game where the big bad wields the piece of wisdom instead of just power ect ect ect.

    I like to believe that The conflict 10k years before BotW is when the timelines merged, and I would love to see 2 games that have Link cross over from the child timeline to the adult and ganon timelines to get one third of the triforce and connect various sages in order to bring the timelines back together so as to prevent the duplicated triforces from tearing the timeline apart because of their individual power. the thirds game in the series could be fighting the conflict itself.
    In one timeline, the sheika are building the guardians to fight Ganondorf.
    In one timeline, Hyrule is properous because of a lack of Ganon, but the Sheika are not technologically advanced.
    In one timeline, there are no sheika and hyrule is barely scraping by, but the wilds and sages have great influence (this one is a spin)
    I'd love to play that trio. They could be adventures on rails like older games, unlike Botw and TotK being open world.
    Maybe the conflict game could be a hyrule warriors type.

    Hands down the best theory video I've watched for totk, and I've watched a lot of videos recently, just like you haha. I have a feeling we will see some form of duality that goes beyond time travel, that being some kind of interdimensional travel. I've had this feeling for a few weeks now and this video really brought it into words better than I could. A thought I had during the video: what if the two dragons in the logo represent this game tying all the timelines together as sort of an endpoint to the series, and then the rest of the zelda games can come between skyward sword and this game. Ganondorf using the triforce to wish multiple versions of himself into existence and materialize multiple dimensions or realities would be so cool. That is why we've seen multiple versions of link!!

    • @wizcatcheslightning
      @wizcatcheslightning  Год назад +1

      Thanks Jacob! And that’s an excellent point. If this is the “end of the timeline” then there needs to be a totem of sorts anchoring the split timelines, causing them to converge. Also, this explains why we would have names of places referencing games from all timelines spelled differently. It’s kind of like a Mandela Effect (hate that I’m using this word), or, all points converged for all timelines but names changed due to history changing those names (Yuga becomes Yiga, Lokomo become kolomo for example)

    You can "merge all three of the timelines" by being placed so far into the future that the events leading up to and then happen in BotW happen in each timeline in the same way, effectively making it not matter which timeline we're playing in. You kind of explained this but then likened it to tears and convergence in BioShock and I'm saying they don't have to have any of that, just three timelines not converging and separately playing out the same events and us not actually knowing which timeline we're in because it effectively doesn't matter a that point. This gives developers more options on how they want to continue the series; presumably they wanted to get rid stories dancing around three separate timelines without retconning anything, which would also give them the freedom to maintain stories in separate timelines later if they ultimately decide that's how they want to continue.

    I don't think I agree with all of this, but I do think you're onto something. I swear I've heard that the team was asked and confirmed it is crying "tears", but that doesn't mean it can't still be both. and that image of the bridge of Hylia with the beast on it and mentioning the dark world/Lorule really has my thoughts running. this game also seems to have an air of "Link and Zelda rediscovering the truth of Hyrule's history" what with the zonai coming back and these ancient ruins in the sky, where we might even see the rest of skyloft that we never saw drop in SS, so things like visiting the dark world/Lorule or even the twilight realm in some capacity would be absolutely insane. and I def think there's something to that considering the two snakes that parallel each other on the doors, unlike the ones in the title that are an oroboros. what is the dark world/Lorule? an identical but darker Hyrule. a mirror image. just like those snakes. something is mirrored, and they told us the title/logo would "give too much away" which is why they didn't want to show it to us too soon.

      Well hang in there! I finished the game in about 40-50 hours with a mostly completed map. Played for like a week straight because I couldn’t get enough of it (I even planned time off from work). You should have more than enough time to finish your quest before tears

      @@wizcatcheslightning especially since I do plan on 100%. Since 75% of the game is running around finding little green men that give you their poo. It'll be tedious. 😅😂 I also got the DLC so I'll be getting the upgraded champion abilities and trial of the sword too. Which will be a pain in the neck. I'm not very good with games like this. I think you are on the right track with respect to the symbology of the two tears with reflective symmetry which you mention around the 19:55 timestamp. In particular, the two-headed ouroboros and also other imagery from the wood plaque pre-order bonus from GameStop in the US (specifically the horizontally reflected eyes near the top within the circular script) indicate a similar concept. I think there may also be meaning to the non-symmetric portions of that artwork. Specifically, the five script characters (two below the left-facing eye and three below the right-facing eye) might be representative of five collectible items like dungeon completion tokens. The five symbols may represent major temples or dungeons, and their separation into sub-groups of two and three symbols may indicate the two divisions such as sky and land.

    There's already been a lot of explanation on how the timeline works out. Tears of the Kingdom is at the end, which is why we go skyward back to Skyward sword, which then starts a new timeline, and so on and so forth. It is all cyclical. That's the only view that doesn't include tons of mental gymnastics. It starts, then ends as it starts, which restarts it etc. Essnetially a timeline loop they are stuck in, but each trip through the timeline is different.

      @@tjepting1 I’ve just watched it. Thanks for sharing! I’m not against the idea. I’m having trouble thinking about how it would happen as well as the paradox it creates. Demise does mention Zelda from SS looking like a mere bag of flesh compared to what he remembered Hylia to look like.

    God I hope this new game is better with the story telling, which by the trailers I’d assume it absolutely is - but Ocarina of time, Majoras mask and The Twilight Princess are the current pinnacle of the series.
    The more theory videos I watch however, the harder it is to keep my hope for the upcoming game suppressed.
